There is 3.5s Undead Leadership feat in Libris Mortis the Book of the Undead, you get an undead cohort and all your followers would be various HD undead instead. I made a Svirfneblin cleric named Gargamel who was very similar to what you are talking about. I mostly played my Hunter undead cohort(corpse creature [book of vile darkness]is such a nice template for the flavor of the creature keeping thier class abilities and such, we always allowed the personality to mostly stay too)as the captain of a bunch of simple undead and my actual character stayed at home relaxing lol. None of this was really very balanced though, if your not allowed to have leadership this obviously wont help.

Its a very heavily story driven game, ive literally emptied the first bestiary of demons on then at various group makeups as well as a few daemons as they are currently in the abyss. I always thought demons everywhere would be alot scarier then they make it seem lol. Im losing a few players soon so the group will shrink as too will my problem i think(all the wizards are leaving!! Hallelujah! Lol) but as of now im contemplating some lesser demon lords and such to test them a bit more?

Thank you, ive never fully relied on CR and have found it nearly useless with this particular party. Its the largest ice played so i thought CR would be more helpful. Not sure if the mythic offset it horribly or if CR is just that inaccurate. Mostly i was looking for a baseline to see if things i want are way past what should be fair.

Im having trouble figuring out what CR encounters are appropriate for them. Now i understand Mythic really dosent offer the most balance so im not really looking for a hard ruling unless there is one. Suggestions would be nice, heres the party:
Brawler/Ninja lv15 Mythic 3
Wizard lv15 Mythic 3
Wizard lv13 Mythic 2
Wizard lv13 mythic 2
Skald/witch lv15 mythic 3
Warpriest lv15 mythic 3
Rogue lv15 mythic 3
Hunter lv15 mythic 3

Thanks a bunch everyone! I'm sure this all will help me a ton!

About a year ago I bought the hardcover collection of all of the rise of the runelords campaign. I haven't been able to give it a good play through, tried twice and never got past the first part(mostly because I couldn't keep a group that didn't end up having scheduling problems). I now have the chance to give it a serious shot and i was wondering if anyone had some tips/ideas to make it a bit smoother for me. This will be the first time ice also actually used pathfinders setting, Golarian, so info on that would be most helpful. I realize there are books on the setting but I cannot afford them as of now. Anything will be appreciated.

So I should make and post my character for you to better decide?

Hello! I am new to PbP gameing but have been interested in trying. I've played, and DMed, IRL for about 10 years the last 4 or 5 mostly using pathfinder. I am very interested in this world and would like to play if you'll have me? I may need a bit of handholding but I'll do my best! I will always be open to constructive criticism.

As for character: I'm thinking oread Brawler? Will multiclassing be allowed? I would eventually maybe try some Barbarian and make him from one of the tribes? Let me know what you think.

Thank you all very much, I think the forum gaming is more what I'm looking for but I will most definitely have to check out this fabled Roll20. Also if anyone is in one of these forum games and needs a player I'm willing to give it a go. I've played a few different Role-playing games IRL (Star warsD20, Deadlands, 3.5/pathfinder, and a bit of 5.0) but I will be new to the online gaming experience. I did used to participate in some online story RP sites but that was YEARS ago.

Thanks guys!

The mechanics of it are a challenge for the DM. It's much more work honestly. It is fun though to be able to play on your own schedule.

I assumed, the thought of DMing it is quite daunting to me but playing sounds like it could be interesting.

Similar to playing tabletop i guess, with pathfinder rules and such. I don't know what any of it is like myself thus I'm asking what it is or can be like. Also I've no idea where you would go for anything like this so ideas for that would be cool as well.

I've wanted to maybe attempt to play in an online game for awhile and was wondering how they are? Opinions on either side are welcome. I only have one game that I'm DMing as of now and would enjoy playing in one even online. Thanks guys!

Starting at level 1? There are many ways you could keep him on track, is there any specific reason you think he will get off track or try to break the game?

Outside of Mythic are there rules for going beyond 20th?
Mythic isn't meant for going beyond 20 the way epic was. It's designed to pad the 1-20 experience.

That's why I prefer mythic to going past 20, it's nice flavor and can really be added whatever level

There is the Epic level handbook for 3.5 you could maybe try and convert it a bit to your needs but even then it definitely can be tedious work and the classes aren't the same so your making more work for yourself.

Love it. Now from the point of view of any poor DM who faces this insanity, what is too many free actions? I know, har har, the rules allow...blah blah, but to try and realistically consider when you've used up your turns with free actions? Let's pick an amount, say 6 free actions a turn? But does that account for any other actions? Maybe a grand total of 4 free actions, and any other normal actions you may have?Maybe using 5 free actions is considered equal to 1 standard? Lol 10 free actions a turn, and a 5ft step/ fly! Lol just for the enjoyment of speculating what an average DM might allow?
I would make decisions like that on a case by case basis. I tink that's the only way to handle it. Although I'll admit, if a player went to THAT much trouble to use free actions, I wouldn't be able to say no...

Exactly why, personally, I would have to limit it while still allowing them to be crazy as they obviously intended in making such a character. I cant see it getting too out of hand really, mostly just silliness. I feel like some free actions are free because they can be done at the same time as other actions (talking and swinging a weapon, or in 5th i think they say picking something up during movement is free) some free actions aren't quite that free though probably and because of that they are obviously not all equal in the amount of time they should take up. Also realize that this is obviously in fun and no rules should exist for extensive use except for maybe one limiting how many you can have a round.

*gasp* is that a real thing?

Actually the disscussion our group had was a cleric, with fire domain, wearing them somewhat like prayer beads lol he will be happy to know he isn't the only one who thought of that.

Yeah I double checked, it bugged me as I thought the idea of not needing to wear it couldn't have came from nowhere. Edited my question out of previous post. Thanks though!

Its a wondorous item and you know what it is so you should be able to use it as stated, I've never made someone/had to make a UMD check for its use.

This may not belong in this thread and i apologize if that is so. A few months ago my friend came back from an anime convention and he brought me this book (Laying Waste the guidebook to critical combat by TPK games) back as a souvenir. I didnt start using it right away as it is full of tables and i wasnt entirely keen on the idea of trying a new crit system, however im glad i finally changed my mind.

I've always disliked the old confirmation reroll rules and had always played with people who disliked it as well so it was houseruled out and we auto-confirmed crits. We also never used fumble charts just relying into the DM to think of an appropriate fail for the occasion.

This book however changed all of that! With its multiple tables for different severitys of crits for different weapon types and very cool and interesting crit/fumble descriptions it's has made our games more enjoyable for sure. I had a fellow DM discourage the use of stuff like it saying it really slowed down the action economy to have another book to flip through and more dice then the normal rules to roll for crits, but I haven't seen some of my players as excited about critting as i have since using the book, I even had a player volunteer as the crit book keeper and it's always at his side lol.

I'm mostly just giving love to what I think is an awesome book. Curious to see who agrees and maybe other people's house rules for crits/fumbles as well?

SmiloDan, what have you done!?!

Drow noble(lv15) Brawler lv9/ Ninja lv6/ Mythic path: Trickster tier2. Description: 5ft 7in tall, 140lbs shorter spiked white hair, red eyes,Gloves of storing with two 9 ring broadswords inside (don't mind if pic shows with or without swords as he frequently switches from them to unarmed). Slight build but obviously very muscular with only monks robes and his bag of holding on.
STR/24
DEX/28
CON/16
INT/18
WIS/18
CHA/17

Maybe try to win? I mean this mostly as a joke, but only mostly. Try to take charge of the situations? Maybe try to take the leadership position yourself? It sounds like you may need a new character? Make something super optimized and badass, mechanically hard to kill and just own the game (I realize this isn't super easy at lv3) steer the rest towards the logical solutions and away from the insane one. I don't know you personally so none of these may suit your play style but maybe some of them could help? Either way I wish you good luck, I myself would be loath to leave a game without it being the last ditch effort.

I use it that way with my brawler characters brawlers flurry.

Though, from a DM perspective, if the spell /attack/ etc. We're to deal the killing blow and maybe they got a good roll or a lot of overkill damage i might allow something like this to occur as just fun roleplay flair. They will then always remember that fight as the one Jake blew the dragons top half off with a fireball. Sometimes for the sake of fun and awesomeness you don't need a set of rules, this game is primarily about imagination after all.

Yeah unless you really want the flair and that one or two times you put it to good use 2 feats might be too much. This reminds me a bit of the archetype that uses scrolls as melee weapons i always thought it was kinda weak though, I like the idea of using a wand as a weapon a bit more.

The risk of breaking it though...
Are you talking emergency use or trying to make it a viable option?

This makes me incredibly excited for my son to get a few years older, he's barely a year but I'm sure with me and his mothers interest in high fantasy and me prodding him, gently, I can even get her to join in! Great story the fact that they are so young gives me hope that I won't have to wait as long as i was thinking to start! With my adult Sunday night game every week I'm sure he will be interested.

I think there is a chart in the race builder section that shows the APL adjustment you would put in place. If I am correct (which I may not be), I believe you would count the RP of all the races in the party, divide it by the number of party members, and then use that chart to determine APL adjustment.
Except this changes over time and eventually goes away entirely. It's not exactly the same.

I had noticed that and was confused a bit by it, but your explanation (Buri)sounded like what I had thought it was, so if a character started with a stronger race then everyone else how would you deal with them then having a lower level once it evens out? Give them a level as they essentially lose a LA?

Sorry to waste space but, level 30 in pathfinder??? Are there rules for that like 3.X epic handbook?

I was definitely looking for mostly his style of samurai or even something from samurai champloo, not necessarily a non-lethal one as Kenshin. Thanks for all the ideas everyone, it's nice to have a different perspective of the Samurai class now. I've yet too look into inquisitors but I don't think I'm going to want casting for this specific character.

Thank you! That sounds all sounds wonderful!

Then I highly suggest it. Make sure your players are pretty smart because they can't just solve the riddles with just skill checks, I've never allowed it anyway lol
EDIT: the copy I have is all black and white pictures though, just so you know.

I've recently seen a preview for the Ruroni Kenshin live action movie and it made me watch the anime again and got me thinking. I've never liked the Samurai class much, as i like my Ronin samurai more so then fully armored horeback riding ones. My question is does somebody know of a class or archetype I could use? I'm definitely going for more the animes style of fighting, jumping around and being very fast. Also anything to deal specifically with the sword drawing techniques or anything else anyone thinks is relevant would be appreciated. Any 3rd party or 3.X is okay with me.

I have to say that Red Jester is hilariously terrifying...

You could just say, since your in the abyss that there are already clouds of some smog like substance that they can't fly through because it's bad to breathe in? Kinda cheesy i guess but it could work.

Do you mind what edition it from? In 3.x there is a module called Lost Tomb Of The Sphinx Queen. For characters 14th-15th. It also has stuff in the front for making it harder/easier. I love it because it really makes the players think a lot. There are a bunch of Traps/Puzzles/Riddles and the place has some gnarly encounters in it. I've never had a party finish it lol I have one now who are a good portion into it but that game is kinda in stasis right now...

Hmm thanks for the clarification, surprising but intriguing. How would you say this would/should affect PvP events and such, like a mortal kombat style fight against players?

So there is no LA in pathfinder? I've always noticed no entry in the races obviously and nothing I read in ARG, not that I have read every word. So do Drow players get to play at the same level as everyone else in a normal raced party then? They just raise its CR?

So is this pathfinder level adjustment?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I always like the entry for mimic, how it states that there are legends of massive mimics that take the form of houses or even extensive dungeons with treasure real and imagined inside to lure pcs. Imagine entering a cave and finding hoards of treasure everywhere and just as you start to dive into the piles of gold the whole cave becomes sticky and by the time you realize you need to leave your already being digested.

I made the Gapeing Dragon from Dark souls 1 as a boss for a campaign once. By far it's nastiest attack was its breath weapon, which was actually just it vomiting enough bile to create a decent sized pool of ankle deep vomit that acted similar to a rust effect except it worked on all non magical, non living material. Only one guy finished the fight with boots still. That was also when I found out how fun it can be to, Grab+Bite+Swallow players

You're dimensional anchored during the process, and local refers to issues of space, but you still have spell effects that are preventing you from leaving. As written, local conditions, based on the definition of the word local, would mean irreverent of the destined location. It says nothing about allowing you to ignore spells affecting you, which would be important to note if it did allow you to ignore things like dimensional anchor.
Note that wish belongs to the universal school. Spells in general have no problem changing their type depending on which version of them you want to use. Yet, wish has no such clauses. It also isn't strictly "teleporting." You simply are in one place and appear in another regardless of local conditions. It's not even called teleport. It's transport. Again, spells that teleport or act as teleportation are always marked as such except, for some reason, wish. Wish defies all the effects that apply to dimensional anchor. Even in its lengthy list of spells it blocks, and only similar spell-like abilities, doesn't include wish while - yes, yet, again - wish gets all kinds of mentions in other spells. Wish is clearly above and beyond any other spell that behaves in a similar way. Not even dimensional lock includes wish.

Yes to this, not that you'll find much other support id wager.

Would wishing for some third party to come and ruin the circle work? Like I wish for the nearest orc to come here and ruin the circle without fail or choice?

I'd like to point out that the lich must perform an act of great evil. However, that act is largely up in the air. Evil is defined as hurting, oppressing, or killing. It's very possible that a would-be lich might have to do something like kill twenty sentient creatures before their ritual or whatever to finalize the process.

Which would make you a bad person if you captured a bunch of brigands and used them for your ritual. However, it would be an act of great evil that most people wouldn't care about. In fact, some might even be happy that the brigands are gone.

And that's just if the GM is going with the fluffy lore in the Bestiary and not allowing liches that don't conform to the fluff.

Usually with something like this...killing 50 corrupted persons won't do. The requirements usually wind up requiring the sacrifice of a group of fairly innocent souls. Price of magic and all that.

I'm supposed to accept that on your authority, why exactly? The ritual is explicitly left up to the group in question.

Hell, in a number of campaign settings (including The Forgotten Realms), there are good-aligned liches, which implies that while the ritual may be unique to each lich, there are apparently alternatives to lichdom.

In fact, in Neverwinter Nights, there's a mage who became a lich using the instructions given to him by a balor. The balor instructed the lich to fireball a room full of children as part of the ritual, but later you find that the balor actually lied and that wasn't even needed to become a lich. He just tricked the mage for the lulz (the mage was a sorcerer IIRC, so he wasn't the brightest crayon in the box).

And if you don't consider murdering 50 people an act of great evil, well...I question your value of life, even unwanted or unwelcome life.

Agreed. I don't remember reading it requires an act of great evil. Hell i recall, and this may be 3.0/3.5, reading that in extremely rare cases a good cleric or wizard may become a lich, usually to provide as an eternal protector or some object or place. Again and DM could make the lich process be whatever they want as I also think it is most often different for every individual.

My friend made a pretty cool BB hunter but i think he was a alchemist(vivisectionist)/Assassin. He pulled his visceral attacks off with fients and sneak attacks though and it was more a cosplay then a serious attempt at making the class exactly as the game.

Wish is...WISH. I'd agree that ignoring local conditions means ignoring the magical circle and all it's power and rules. It's supposed to be a strong power and Pit Fiends should not be easy to contain even if the person trying does everything right, it's okay for the fiend to break out that easily with just the WISH spell because that person was dumb enough to try and summon and contain it in the first place.
