I actually like GMing games where people want to continue after the original GM has bowed out. It usually makes for a pretty good group, cause the people who want to keep going are really into the game (Which can be one of the hardest parts of pbp).

Ya, let's say 60' away from the base of the stairs.

Rounds 2 and 3: will repeat Burst of Radiance on groups of 5 or more (primarily zombies, but if I can get vampire spawn, them too) that I can target, readying if necessary (DC 19 Ref Save to turn blind into dazzle):

Round 2 Blind: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Round 2 Dazzle: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Round 2 Damage: 5d4 ⇒ (4, 3, 4, 1, 2) = 14

Round 3 Blind: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Round 3 Dazzle: 1d4 ⇒ 3

Rounds 4-6: Will cast slow, targeting the most Vampire Spawn I can get with a single spell casting (will include zombies as well, but focusing primarily on Vampire Spawn until they're all slowed). Won't bother slowing Zombies, since they're already slowed. DC 20 Will Save.

Round 7: Magic Missile into the healthiest looking Vampire Spawn that I can see:

As the first group breaches their perimeter, Alembic gestures, and an explosion of light rips among them.

Okay, so Burst of Radiance is an interesting spell, to say the least. It is an AoE spell that does the following:

For all creatures, it is a Reflex Partial Spell (DC 19) that Blinds for 1d4 rounds on a failed save and dazzles for 1d4 rounds on a successful save.

If a creature targeted by this spell is evil, they also take 1d4 untyped damage/caster level (max 5d4), whether they made the save or not.

Blind: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Dazzled: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Evil Damage: 5d4 ⇒ (4, 3, 3, 2, 4) = 16

The idea for the pit traps is more like the Punji Stick traps used in the Vietnam war.

As night draws near, Alembic will take up a spot somewhat up the stairs so that he can cast and then move up as needed.

So here are the elements to my plan:
1) clear an area around the base of the tower, so that we can see them coming with movement, even if we can't see them coming with because of darkness.
2) set up pit traps to slow them down, even if it doesn't super effect them (also, in case they bring things besides just vampire spawn)
3) Set up fire piles, so that even if people don't have darkvision, they can still see our enemies at a distance (since the top of the tower is 150' from the base aka outside the range of most darkvision
4) Win

Having cleaned the Harpies (and himself and anyone else who asked) Alembic moves down to the bottom of the tower and looks for ways to start clearing a deadzone around it.

After a few minutes, he calls back up "Hey, are you going to just watch me work, or are you going to help?"

He explains his intent to anyone who listens, and he instructs those helping to gather the loose wood they collect into large piles to make it easy to set them on fire.

Alembic goes a different route to try and help them: he uses his magic to clean them. One by one their clothing and bodies are cleaned with the power of his magic.

"That's a sight better now, isn't it?" he asks once he has them clean. He also takes the time to clean the area at the top of the stairs, mainly to get rid of the attrocious smell.

"So, we are going to want fires for when they come: that way, we can see them before they can see us." to the Harpies he then added "Do you have any wood or torches that we can burn?"

"Our main concern with vampires and their spawn is that they will attack at night. I'd recommend that we have a large fire, so that we have torches handy for those who can't see in the dark."

At the break where the party pushed forward from the caravan, Alembic collected a dozen branches thick enough to make wooden stakes from, and began carving. When the group next stopped for a break, he passed the completed ones out and explained their use while putting people to work making more:

"So, this is a stake. You'll want to shove it into their chest and pierce the heart. That will stop them from moving. Additionally, anything with the touch of the Gods of light will harm them. I have a an explosive spell that should decimate them. As a precaution, should you not cleave to the side of light, you will want to stay out of the area of said spell, as at a minimum it will blind you, and should you have strayed too far from goodness, it will burn your skin. I often used it to deal with evil outsiders, but it works just as well on undead."

"Also, positive energy is your best bet barring stakes and silver weapons; should you have blessed water on your person, that would work quite effectively as well."

"Finally, do not let them grab you, as if they do they will sink their fangs into you and drain your life essence, with the potential to turn you into one of them. Should someone here get grabbed, that person's vampire is the priority."

Having gotten tired of answering Oscar's daily requests for work, Oscar had Alembic assigned to be the Treasurer for the kingdom, a task he had a good amount of talent with, as he was born and raised in a city of absolute laws. He simply applied his accoounting system for his personal finances to the finances of the nascient kingdom.

Once the documents were signed and returned to the halls of Abadar, Alembic easily fell into a daily routine: In the morning, he would meet with Oscar and get his tasks for the day, then would set about completing them.

Generally he just helped out wherever he could.

It's mostly just an employment contract, but it covers things like "what happens if Oscar falls from grace" or "in the unlikely event that Abadar no longer exists". It more or less explains that I am an employee of Abadar on loan of an unspecified length of time and that as such Oscar would need to make sure that I Was paid an equal portion of any wealth gained. It confirms that I am indeed a wizard, and gives him the highlights of my employment with Abadar and the Lancelot Corps.

Alembic seems fascinated by pretty much everything as they travel towards their destination. He spends time asking excited questions about mundane things, then nods his head and makes notes. Think of him as a tourist who has never been to a big city before.

He does his duty as needed, but while not working he studies much of the new environment around him.

*I am a wizard with practical experience dealing with both elementals and extraplanar creatures.

*I do not cast elementally focused magic; instead, I rely on both disabling and light and force based magic to dispatch my targets.

*I am knowledgeable in the sorts of creatures you might fight throughout the multitude of planes.

*I am in the employ of Abadar, currently on loan to Oscar Cray.

*While I am indeed a wizard, I have some abilities that are not known to those outside my specific path of training.

Alembic walks outside and joins the other, then with some gestures and incantation a pure white horse pops into existance, along with silver bit, bridle, and saddle.

I’m currently running Curse of the Crimson Throne and one of my players is a Gnome Illusionist who recently arrived in Korvosa (a few months ago).

In the “Guide to Korvosa” it says that gnomes receive frequent invitations to join the Acadamae, “either as students or faculty, regardless of the number of times they decline or their lack of magical ability” and that “all four of the illusion instructors in the school are gnomes”.

So… in some point, I guess the Player should receive and invitation to join the Acadamae. From what I've read, the Acadamae has closed its doors due to the troubles in Korvosa and I think it's going to remain closed for the entire campaign (I haven't read the full book yet), but I'm still curious:

• I understand there is an entry test, then 3 years of servitude, 7 years of training and then the final exam to graduate. But to graduate you need to summon an imp, so you should be at least lvl 7, but there is a lvl 1 feat called “Acadamae graduate”. The only option that I can think of is using an “Planar Binding Lesser” scroll. What do you think? Do you have any better solution?
• Also, it is said that “the rent for students’ tenement flats and studios are included in their already expensive tuition”, what would you consider an expensive tuition?
• Finally, what lvl would you recommend to be able to apply as a professor? And what salary range would you suggest?
