The whole town of Sandpoint has been abuzz for weeks in anticipation of the first day of autumn. Eager to put the tragedies of the Late Unpleasantness behind them, it seemed that one couldn't go anywhere in town without somebody talking about the Swallowtail Festival held in honor of Desna and the long-awaited consecration of the new cathedral.
The Late Unpleasantness, as the locals in Sandpoint refer to it, was a series of violent and tragic events which shook the normally peaceful coastal town in the year 4702 AR. A serial killer named Chopper killed 26 people over the course of a month, including the prior Sheriff, and displayed the remains of his victim on an altar to a bird-like god. Later that same year, a large fire claimed some lives, most notably that of Father Tobyn, and the Sandpoint Chapel was destroyed in the process, while also destroying in part some other buildings.
For five years, the faithful of Sandpoint have attended church in smaller wooden structures rebuilt after fire destroyed the previous temple, and while their new pastor Father Zantus was helpful, kind, and wise, church wasn’t the same. Now, the new cathedral is finally done. All that remains is for the Swallowtail Festival to renew the site’s blessings from the gods and it will be as if the Sandpoint Fire had never occurred.
The Swallowtail Festival begins promptly, as scheduled, with weather that is cool and clear, signaling the arrival of fall. The square before the cathedral quickly becomes crowded as locals and travelers arrive, and several merchant tents featuring food, clothes, local crafts, and souvenirs are there to meet them.
Hello all! Oddly enough, though RotRL is the first of Paizo's APs, has been out for years, and is one of the most popular APs, I have never GMed it to completion. In RL, in 1E, I GMed a game to Book 3 before the party suffered a TPK. Thus, I got the bright idea to GM it on the boards in 2E style. I am enjoying the system, the 3-action economy, etc. I am no expert on PF2e by any means and appreciate player input. I hope some of you will agree to give it a chance. I will try and keep the story fresh with some surprises as there is a ton of community added content to enhance the original storyline and events.
Expectations from players: At least 1 post a day. Do not apply if you plan on disappearing for long periods of time. I do not expect to start this until after the New Year.
Submissions, character creation, and party: Please let me know what your character motivations/ideals/beliefs are and your connection to Sandpoint, if any. Tell me how you see your character's progression and role in the party. A basic stat block with skills, ancestry, background, and feats without specifics of equipment other than armor/weapon is sufficient. I am very influenced by a character's appearance so I can properly present NPC reactions to your character.
Races: Common and Catfolk, Kobold, Leshy, Ratfolk, and Tengu are allowed. No uncommon versatile heritages.
Classes: All except kineticist, psychic and summoner.
Backgrounds: The RotRL backgrounds, IMO, are not good (except maybe 1 or 2), so feel free to choose any from the Archives of Nethys. Just make sure to explain the logical tie-in to the background chosen in your character submission.
Free archetype at level 2.
Milestone leveling.

Town of Otari on the Isle of Korthos
3 days before the Winter Solstice
The bells atop the Temple of Sarenrae toll their midday song, echoing throughout the quiet town of Otari. As the peals begin to fade, the first of the townsfolk make their way into the square in front of the library, in anticipation of the upcoming event. They slowly fill the square, moving quietly across the chilly, hard ground. After a few moments, a murmur passes through the crowd as it slowly parts to let Mayor Oseph Menhemes, patriarch of one of three local lumber companies, pass through. He leads the way with a tarnished silver lantern. Behind him, an old pony drags a cart laden with backpacks and supplies.
As you look around, most of the 1200 people who inhabit Otari are present.
Once he reaches the center of the crowd, Mayor Menhemes stops and calls out to the assembled townsfolk in a somber voice. “Once again, the coming winter winds blow through Otari, marking the end of another harvest. There are wolves in the woods, howling at our walls, and serpents in our shadows, waiting to strike. As is our tradition, every four years, we need brave heroes that will venture out to the tomb of our first ever Mayor, Lord Kassen, and retrieve the flame to keep this town safe during the next four winters? Who will step up and honor our traditions and save the town?" The mayor pauses, breaks character, and smiles, "If no one is willing, I have your names so we will resort to the lottery system. What say ye?”
For natives of Otari, you know all of this is for pomp. Every 4 years, the town puts on this facade, where brave heroes head to the abandoned crypt about a day and a half away, light the flame, and come back just in time to celebrate the Solstice festival. It's considered harmless fun and people tend to enjoy the spectacle of it all.
Describe your interactions at the square and advise if you volunteer.
Thank you to all who applied and let's have a fun game. You may introduce yourselves and explain in a sentence your connection to Otari - how long have you been here? What's your connection to the town?
Please finalize your characters for my review. Remember that this is my first PF2E game so I am bound to make mistakes so would appreciate patience and understanding.
When the mysterious Gauntlight, an eerie landlocked lighthouse, glows with baleful light, the people of Otari know something terrible is beginning. The town's newest heroes must venture into the ruins around the lighthouse – and delve the dungeon levels far beneath it – to discover the evil the Gauntlight heralds. Hideous monsters, deadly traps, and mysterious ghosts all await the heroes who dare to enter the sprawling megadungeon called the Abomination Vaults!
I am a long-time PF1E GM, looking to move into PF2E (first time) and experience the magic for myself. I am looking for a group of 3 adventurers, who can post at least once per day M-F, who are in search of a dungeon crawl and want to play 2E!
If you're not familiar with AV, this is a megadungeon so if that is not your cup of tea, even though there will be opportunities for rp. Since I have read that the adventure is unforgiving to low level parties, we will be running through a modified Crypt of Everflame 2E scenario to get the party to second level and some fame before tackling the adventure itself.
The game takes place in and around the town of Otari. Your character is encouraged to be from Otari and use a campaign specific background, but doing so is not required.
Classes and Backgrounds: Since this is meant to be an introductory game, please limit Class and Background options to the Core Rulebook. I know there are plenty of splat books and a plethora of character classes, but since this is my first foray into 2E, I will limit the options of CRB and the Common trait, unless you have an interesting backstory for an uncommon item.
Starting equipment = 15 gp.
I have one character already who will be playing in this game (he will be playing a half-orc fighter), and I am looking for a balanced group of THREE more adventurers.
Backgrounds specific to Otari and AV:
Bibliophile
You love few things more than a good book, and as a result, Odd Stories is your favorite shop in Otari. The bookseller Morlibint supplies you with fiction, anthologies, and other delightful reads, and he's always eager to discuss his latest finds with you. You know that imagination is the greatest magic, but a working knowledge of actual magic helps, too.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Intelligence or Charisma, and one is a free ability boost.
You're trained in the Arcana skill, and the Library Lore skill. You gain the Arcane Sense skill feat.
Eldritch Anatomist
You're a trained physician who can ably tend wounds of many kinds. But more than a practitioner, you're a scholar. Some cultures shape flesh to extreme degrees, creating aberrations from humanoid forms. The fleshforges of distant Nex practice this fleshwarping, as do certain subterranean societies you hope to one day study— preferably from a safe and clinical distance.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Intelligence or Wisdom, and one is a free ability boost.
You're trained in the Medicine skill, and the Fleshwarp Lore skill. You gain the Assurance skill feat with Medicine.
Market Runner
Keeleno Lathenar, the proprietor of Otari Market, is a grim and bitter man. A werewolf named Jaul Mezmin mauled his wife, Ayla, to death 30 years ago. Keeleno has never forgotten nor forgiven this attack, and he believes against all odds that Jaul has evaded justice and is alive and well. Running errands for Keeleno around town, you've gotten to know him almost as well as you know Otari. Keeleno's suspicions have rubbed off on you a bit, so you keep a wary eye on other people— particularly around the full moon.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Constitution or Charisma, and one is a free ability boost.
You're trained in the Diplomacy skill, and the Otari Lore skill. You gain the Hobnobber skill feat.
Ruin Delver
You've looked through some of the smaller ruins in the Otari hinterlands but have never quite built up the courage to check out the creepy lighthouse called Gauntlight. You've heard that these ruins are pretty well picked over, and mostly collapsed, but you always planned to some day explore them and perhaps find some bauble left behind from the centuries-old battle where the Roseguard slew an evil sorcerer. You know that the crumbled stone of old ruins has a tendency to shift, so you'd better step lightly if you get the chance to explore Gauntlight.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Dexterity or Intelligence, and one is a free ability boost.
You're trained in the Acrobatics skill, and the Roseguard Lore skill. You gain the Cat Fall skill feat.
Starwatcher
You're one of Wrin Sivinxi's closest confidantes. You've spent many long nights with her under the stars, learning the tales associated with the Cosmic Caravan and how the heavens can predict the future. You know that Wrin has paralyzing claustrophobia; she sees menace in angles and danger in confined spaces, which is why her shop is an all domed canvas that opens to the sky. If Wrin thinks there's trouble, you'll be the first to offer to help.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Constitution or Intelligence, and one is a free ability boost.
You're trained in the Occultism skill, and the Astrology Lore skill. You gain the Dubious Knowledge skill feat.
Witchlight Follower
While in a dismal forest or remote swamp, you caught sight of a string of lights bobbing through the trees. You stepped forward for a closer look, and then still further when the lights retreated a few paces. Then you remembered the rumors. Will-o'-wisps, rushlights, corpse lanterns—whatever they're called—such evil creatures lead people to their doom. With a supreme effort of will, you broke free from the alluring enchantment, and you've resolved to never let the strange lights of remote wildernesses claim you again.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Dexterity or Wisdom, and one is a free ability boost.
You're trained in the Survival skill, and the Wisp Lore skill. You gain the Terrain Expertise skill feat with both swamp terrain and subterranean bodies of water.
Recruitment will remain open for one week or until I get sufficient applications. I will post if the recruitment deadline changes. Any questions, please let me know.
The city of Wati sits on a sandstone shelf at the confluence of the Asp and Crook rivers, which provide it with building materials, rich farmland, and deep harbors sufficient to support a settlement three times its size. But even with its tenacious citizens, abundant fish and game, and thriving marketplaces fueled by the most important rivers in Osirion, Wati is forever a city better known for its dead than for its living. Behind sanctified walls, an entire quarter of the city quietly sits as a massive, urban tomb. Shops, schools, markets, and estates serve as eternal resting places for those lost to madness and disease. To manage such an immense project, the city’s entire economy shifted to the industry of interment. Almost 1,800 years after the necropolis’ inception, many of Wati’s residents continue to serve the city’s funeral industry, either directly as embalmers, undertakers, and clerics of Pharasma, or indirectly by crafting the myriad grave goods all Osirians hope to carry with them into the afterlife. Death has become the city’s lifeblood, and Wati prospers from its morbid specialty.
Welcome to those selected! Thank you for your time and effort in designing and developing your interesting characters. My goal is to have fun above all else in a collaborative environment. Please try to finalize your characters (equipment, feats, etc.) over the weekend so we can get started.
I hope you can all post at least once per day M-F and I understand if it is less on the weekends. If you're going to be out, let me know and I will do the same.
Any questions, please let me know. The module assumes that you are an established adventuring group participating in the lottery in Wati for the opening of the Necropolis. However, I could also start you out as strangers chosen randomly (?) (by fate?) to work together in this endeavor. Let me know your thoughts on preference: established group or strangers?
The ancient lands of Osirion are blanketed by the sands of time, and eldritch secrets and vast riches lay just beneath the sun-blistered surface. As modern Osirion opens its vaults and tombs to outsiders for the first time in centuries, many of these lost treasures and secrets are now emerging and explorers are needed to recover them! The Ruby Prince Khemet III has ordered the government of Wati and the church of Pharasma to open the city of Wati’s necropolis to exploration. This development has attracted a number of adventurers and scholars and merchants to the area. What wonders will you find?
Hello all! I was off the boards for personal reasons for the last 18 months, but I am back now, eager to run a fun PbP and since I am a fan of undead, Mummy's Mask seems like a good choice. There's a free Player's Guide on the internet which you can find to help with the story.
Character creation guidelines (Looking for 4-5 players):
2nd level (gives your character some history)
15-point buy
No evil
Skills: Per PHB
Classes: All allowed except no summoner and no psionics/occult.
Races: Core and aasimar/tiefling/catfolk allowed.
GP: 1000
HP: Max 1st level and 1/2+1 for second level
2 traits (1 campaign)
Posting: 1/day at a minimum
Looking for a character sheet and the following:
1. Visual description of character.
2. Tell me about your personality - Why do you care about tomb exploring? Why risk death at the hands of ancient traps or untold horrors buried away?
3. Are you a native of Wati or found yourself here for other reasons?
Any other questions, let me know and thanks for considering this PbP.
Welcome to all selected! Let's have fun! Finish your characters and let me know if you want to start out as knowing each other or if you wish to start out as strangers.
Hey all, after being absent for awhile from the boards due to the pandemic, I am back on the boards for good. I have 20+ years of RPing, all different games and editions. I am a fan of horror and high level play, so no more perfect campaign than Carrion Crown. I want to try out the "Ashes at Dawn" module here in PbP, skipping over the lower level parts of CC, starting at 11th level. If there is interest, we can finish the AP too. Anyway, I have one slot reserved for a player who is interested in playing an alchemist, serving the trap disabler role. So I am looking for 3-4 other brave characters to round out the group!
Character creation guidelines:
20-point buy - no stat lower then 8 after racial adjustments.
11th level
No VMC
HPs: Max + 1/2+1 per level
2 traits, may be but do not have to be campaign traits from Carrion Crown
Wealth level for 11th level
Classes: No summoners or occult classes.
Races: Core and Dhampir only, since the latter fits the setting.
Application:
Be a team player.
Post your physical description.
Mannerisms, tics, personality...what makes you unique?
Personal achievements - why and how did you get into adventuring? What are your goals? The game starts near Ustalav - why are you in the region?
You don't have to create an alias, but I would like to see your crunch.
I will leave recruitment open for 10 days, but reserve the right to cut the recruitment short if enough applicants apply.
Any questions, let me know. Hope there's still interest. Cheers!
Welcome to those selected! Let's try and have fun. I am looking forward to this game. Please finish your characters and spend your gold. Also, let me know if you have ties to any of the other players or if you wish to start out as strangers.
I am a rping veteran, though fairly new to the boards. I am here, looking to start an Age of Worms AP, my favorite AP ever. It's also one of the deadliest, so be forewarned. Game will be set in Greyhawk universe. I am looking for 4-5 characters. My style of GMing is 70% combat, 30% RP.
Expectations:
1. Minimum of 1-2 posts during M-F.
2. Creative and interesting backgrounds with ties to the mining town of Diamond Lake with cool physical descriptions are a plus.
3. Play nice with others.
4. Have some knowledge of Greyhawk.
Character creation:
1. 2nd Level Characters (like I said, it's deadly). HPs 1/2HD+1 after first level.
2. Races: Core and Featured
3. Class and Archetypes: Core and Base
4. Abilities: 20-pt Buy
5. Alignment: Any good or neutral. (No evil)
6. Wealth: 1000 gp.
7. Character Traits: Two
8. No VMC.
9. Background Skills in effect.
10. Elephant in the Room rules in effect.
Any questions, let me know. Looking forward to reading your applications. I will keep the recruitment open until 7/20.
In the Monastery of the Standing Stone in the Mindspin Mountains, the giant dwarf master is politely interrupted while he meditates. "Master, we have just received a half-orc emissary with a summons for you." The bald monk, a recent entrant to the monastery, is very apologetic for the interruption and bows before the dwarf and hands Rothgar Steelfist a rolled up scroll sealed with an emblazoned "M" on a red/black background. The wise dwarf, sensing no traps, breaks the seal and unfurls the scroll, which reads as follows:
"Master (insert your character's name), Golarion itself is in peril. An evil menace seeks to usher in an apocalyptic age of decay, disease, and undeath. Our prior prior efforts to defeat this menace have failed and it grows stronger with each passing day. Your fame and skill precede you as well as your efforts in the service of good. Your assistance is desperately needed to destroy the Harbinger of this tide of evil. Please meet me to discuss this matter in person at my manor in two days' time at sundown on the 13th day of Lamashan of this year. If you agree to hear me out, my emissary will give you further instructions."
Sincerely,
Silvana D'Artest, Magister
Corentyn
Archduchy of Longmarch
Cheliax
Similar scenes play out at the Temple of the Shining Star, Sarenrae's largest temple in Absalom, and in Kyonin (or whatever major city, Pele finds himself in). All of the scrolls are personally addressed to each of you.
If you agree to attend, the half-orc emissary produces rings for each party member with similar seals as the letter. He instructs you to wear the ring at the specified time and concentrate on the phrase "Silvana's Homecoming" when you are ready to attend and you will be transported to the manor. He also warns you that the ring's magic will fade after one use, so do not concentrate until you are ready to attend.
You can dot and post your reaction to the summons and/or your appearance when you teleport on the 13th.
Welcome to the fortunate souls selected! Here's to a brand new year and some fun rping! Please complete your characters and equipment and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Also advise of any changes - you can't change your class but you can modify equipment, etc.
Hey all, I am new to the message boards but would like to try my luck out. I have been playing and GMing for years now and am a fan of the Age of Worms campaign (it is my all-time favorite - I finished it with a dwarven cleric whom I played from first level and died only once!). I am also a fan of high level play, so rather than spend years raising the characters from Level 1-15, I thought we'd start out at Level 15. I know it can be tiresome to make high level characters and spend all the gold, but I think it can be fun as well. Well, for those that don't know, the Age of Worms was a Greyhawk 3.5 AP (will play with PF rules obviously), wherein the protagonists are trying to stop the return of the undead god Kyuss to the Material Plane, thereby causing an Age of Undeath, where the undead will rule the world. So basic heroic save the world type-stuff!
Campaign rules:
Looking for posters who can post at least 1x day
15th level characters (looking for 4-5 characters)
25 point build since I am limiting the game to Core Rulebook.
No evil alignments
2 traits
Core book only for rest (races, classes, feats, magic, etc.) (the other Paizo books tend to make powerful high level characters with all the optional stuff and I am trying to keep the old-school Greyhawk feel of the game.)
240K gold to spend (can't spend more than 75K on one single item)
Character: Give me a visual description and a sense of what makes your character tick - he/she has achieved fame/gold/renown - why do you still adventure? Or are you retired? What do you do when you are not saving the world?
Since it is the holidays, I will leave this recruitment open till the 5th of January. Hope this is an appealing idea to some of you. Any questions, please let me know. Cheers!
