Here for the killing

Your group was hired to assassinate a perfidious merchant. While slavery is strictly forbidden in much of the world, and no one wants to acknowledge it, it exists. On the surface Ungido the Dove was a simple trader, but when you traffic in souls, you attract enemies.

Yesterday you walked away from his body, which you had nailed to the prow of his ship, the Painted Sea. The ship was docked in the port of Karlsgard, capital of the Land of the Linnorm Kings. The city of Kalsgard is located on the southern banks of the Rimeflow River in the northern reaches of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings known as the Thanelands. It is the largest city in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, and as such is the most cosmopolitan city for several hundred miles, housing communities of dwarves, gnomes, Varisians, and people from even further afield. Thousands will see your work.

Contracted fulfilled.

Achaekek approves of your understakings. You now all possess a more potent token of his favor. You can cast Blood Vendetta once per day as an innate divine spell; this spell automatically heightens to a rank equal to your half your level.

You find yourselves at the Whistling Fox. A bard named Thyrie Tarnralsdottir is performing.*

*This is a callback to Book 2 of Jade Regeant, an AP I would have LOVED to have run.

It's time to introduce each other and get to know the others. The game begins after introductions ahve been made.

The half orc sat at the bar. He wore dark, mostly black clothing w/ a few red highlights. He kept his hood up, but other than that didn't try to hide his orc heritage. Graloch had learned that he could not hide that part of himself. His skin's green/gray tinge and small tusks were a dead giveaway. But he had long grown used to it. He took comfort and solace in the strength and discipline of his mind and body. While some did find him frightening, he never tried to intimidate or threaten. He used his words or his fists as needed.
He sipped the glass of honey mead. He rarely took alcohol, but sometimes allowed himself one after a contract was fulfilled. Just as sometimes he would have a woman to reward himself. He usually took woman of orc or goblin blood, it caused less problems. But they were few and far between in this part of the world.
He scanned the crowd a little and simply enjoyed the mead which was quite good.

Helvetilia swirls a chair ostentatiously out from under the table near the bar and slides her rucksack onto the back. She brushes her dark hair over her left shoulder before sitting down with one leg crossed over the other knee. She taps the toe of her red, leather boot in the air to whatever tune the resident skald is playing. "It's fine Graloch," she says while waving to get a barmaid's attention. "You sit way over there. We won't take offense."

She fastidiously adjusts the belts, pouches, and charms wrapped around her waist. "Another dramatic tableau, touchingly appropriate as usual, Vorcan. But did you see his expression when the blades came out? That moment when they realize that they did not, in fact, get away with their crimes is priceless."

Once the waitress arrives at the table, she orders a quality red.

Coro chuckles slightly at Helvetilia's admonishment. You say that to him after every job, Hel, he says, taking a long drag on his cigarillo before continuing. And every time, he has a drink more or less by himself and then slinks off into the night, usually with company.

That expression was worth admission, no doubt. Though, admittedly Ungido couldn't dwell on it long.

Once orders have been made, your party grows by one. Grabbing a seat with you is a familiar figure—a slender aiuvarin man with golden brown skin and long white hair who wears a red hooded cloak over leather armor]. His dark red eyes glitter. This is Vatum, a high ranking courier who serves the Vernai and is known as a favored contact of Blood Mistress Jakalyn.

Mantis assassins in the field are assigned new missions through couriers like Vatum, but you have have not been approached by him before. His presence here indicates a great honor and trust from leadership.

He wrinkles his nose at Coro. "I would like to offer my congratulates on your recent success but that is not why I am here. I shall quickly get to the point -a new target has been selected for a “Visit from He Who Walks” The target in this case is a powerful, notorious priest of Gorum: General Ordulf Bladecaller..."

For the next several minutes, he gives you an extensive amount of intelligence:

For Your Eyes Only:

  • General Ordulf Bladecaller is an Ulfen man, born in a now destroyed fishing village along the shores of Glacier Lake in Irrisen.

  • Ordulf escaped from the winter witches of Irrisen as a young man and fled west, eventually seeking shelter in the neighboring Lands of the Linnorm Kings; rumors that he personally wrestled one of the chicken-legged animated huts that guards the borders of Irrisen to the ground swiftly won him acclaim and respect in the eastern regions of the Linnorm Kingdoms.

  • Ordulf earned the sobriquet “Bladecaller” for his intimidating nature: he had a noteworthy tendency to win conflicts through insults alone even before drawing a blade—his words, many say, cut as deep as any sword or axe.

  • Today, Ordulf’s standing in the church of Gorum is obscure. Some rumors say that he is one of the god’s favorites and been blessed so that he cannot be killed, while others insist that he’s turned to other sinister powers to ensure his longevity and that his faith in Gorum is a sham. Of note, all those who confronted Ordulf on matters of his faith were swiftly slain by the warlord.

  • Ordulf wields a frost greatsword and a wounding battleaxe capable of fighting on its own at his side in battle.

  • Ordulf single-handedly slaughtered a clan of adlets* who had taken residence in an ancient dwarven fortress in the foothills of the Stormspear Mountains. Now renamed Crownhold, this fortress is his seat of power. The closest settlement to Crownhold is a remote trading post called Glacier’s Rest. You may know something already. Given that everyone can roll and sort out the results, I'm not going to make it a secret roll. Simply give me a blind Society or appropriate Lore check.

  • Recent rumors say that Ordulf is preparing his forces to wage war against Trollheim, the capital of the kingdom of Hagreach in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, rather than following local tradition and killing a linnorm to become a king. Many in Hagreach and kingdoms beyond see this as an affront to tradition, but Ordulf’s reputation is such that none dare oppose him—least of all King Freyr Darkwine, who arrogantly considers Ordulf to be a “mountain-squatting troll” and not worth his time to even consider a threat.

  • The call for Ordulf’s assassination reached the Red Mantis via many whispers. While none in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings would dare claim responsibility for setting these events in motion, the assassination of General Ordulf Bladecaller, a man who would abuse his position of power to usurp the rightful traditions of rule, is now a matter for you.
  • "You are to return to Ilizmagorti once the deed is done with his personal religious symbol in hand as an offering of respect to Achaekek."

Vorcan gives a complete rundown on Glacier's Rest. It's definitive enough that no one seems to have anything else to add.

Glacier’s Rest is a relatively large but remote town, and should make an excellent place to begin the work of planning an infiltration of the fortress of Crownhold. As with all Red Mantis missions, it’s important not to reveal your affiliation with the assassins publicly— Vorcan slips in a reminder that you should not wear armor or carry weapons that would betray your purpose.

Vorcan adds I love tables: 1d6 ⇒ 2 a little flare that shows off just the right amount. The friendliest innkeeper in town, Gundar Icebreaker runs a place called the Frosty Stein which caters to the merchants who arrive about once a week. He earned his surname after a demonstration where he punched through a solid block of ice, a demonstration he still performs on request. Prices for meals and lodging here are standard, although no extravagant suites or fine dining options are available.

Now on a roll, she adds MOAR tables: 1d5 ⇒ 1 something about Crownhold Warehouse: As merchants come into town, they deposit goods bound for Crownhold here under the care of one Kranold Buergon. Kranold lost his fortunesearching for adamantine in the Stormspear Mountains and now acts as warehouse custodian until he saves enough for another expedition into the unforgiving north. He makes deliveries to Crownhold once a week, after the merchant caravans have gone.

YES!: 1d4 ⇒ 2 And don't forget about Gunilla’s Goods: Locals use this small market for their everyday goods, while merchants give Gunilla Crowfriend a huge boost in business to resupply their caravans or purchase tools to fix their wagons. Common magic items (other than weapons or armor) of level 5 or lower can be purchased here.

Also, the majority of locals revere Gorum. Anyone who wears heavy armor or carries a greatsword gains a +1 circumstance bonus to checks to Coerce, Make an Impression, Request, and Gather Information. Conversely, anyone who is revealed to be an enemy of the faith or who publicly mocks the Gorum-worshipping lifestyle is swiftly seen as a coward, and they instead take a –4 circumstance penalty to all of the above checks.

That's where the bragging opportunities stop, as your mission intel revealed more about the target than Vorcan knew.

Your mission is clear. You’re expected to carry out the killing of General Ordulf Bladecaller in a way that leaves no question that his death took place upon the blades of the Red Mantis. However, as long as he’s killed in a way that none can mistake who slew him, the methods and timeline of his assassination are left entirely up to YOU. This is not a matter to be resolved politically, or with the aid of anyone in a position of power within the Lands of the Linnorm Kings. This is the duty of the Red Mantis alone.

    You discuss plans en route....

An icy wind blows across the open tundra south of the town of Glacier’s Rest, which crouches atop an upthrust escarpment of stone that looms a hundred feet above the surrounding plains. To the north stand the formidable Stormspear Mountains, while a treacherous-looking trail consisting of three switchbacks ascends the ridge to the town from the trade road that winds into the distance to the east and west.

The town itself is bordered by further defenses—palisades of pine that block the frigid winds and deny townsfolk a view of the southern tundra, further accenting the dominance of the mountains to the north. Clusters of log cabins, alehouses, trading posts, and storehouses huddle together around a massive longhouse, ribbons of smoke reaching to the sky through holes on either end of the town’s largest building. A single track winds north from town into the mountains—the only indication that this remote settlement is not the last bastion against the frozen wilderness to the north.

Glacier’s Rest is located in northwestern Hagreach in the foothills of the Stormspear Mountains, just north of a long road that winds along the northern border of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, connecting remote Stormspear Keep to the east on the Irrisen border with the settlement of Turvik on the well-traveled Path of Aganhei over a hundred miles to the west.

While you can certainly just march right up to Crownhold and begin a frontal assault, Red Mantis assassination missions are subtle infiltrations, with the public revelation of the Mantis’s involvement taking place only during the assassination. You quickly learn that a large merchant caravan recently arrived and is in the process of shipping supplies north to Crownhold. This, combined with the fact that the merchants are spending a fair amount of time relaxing and cavorting in town before they head back east to Turvik, makes for the perfect cover for you to begin plotting an infiltration of the fortress. You also learn that the merchants plan to leave town in two days, at which point the locals look forward to spending several weeks in the calm comforts of isolation. At this point, you, as outsiders to Crownhold, will be unwelcome in town.

So you have two days to plan.

Once they've obtained their rooms, Helvetilia secludes herself within so she can change her disguise. When she emerges, carefully timed for when nobody is in the hallway, her hair is tucked under a fur cap, her features and build are much more masculine, and the sword is left behind.

Hero Point for Helvetilia for not rolling her own :-)

Vorcan organizse an attention-grabbing event that’s primed to occur during your infiltration of the fortress. Gaining you one Leverage Point

Coro's not messing around. Crownhold was built by dwarves thousands of years ago during the height of their ancestral expansion to the surface world. The dwarves abandoned this outpost to consolidate their troops during the Five Kings War, and the outpost has been changing occupants ever since, usually through conquest. Over the years, those who have occupied the fortress have found some, but not all, of the hidden compartments the dwarves built into the structure. [ooc] This intel allows the party to use a Leverage Point to assist with hiding bodies; when you use a Leverage Point in this way, describe a convenient feature of the immediate area (a small hidden nook, a narrow gap in a wall, a secret panel that opens into an empty compartment) that gives you an advantage.

Helvetilia gets up close, real close... If your next exploration activity is to Observe Crownhold, you gain a +2 circumstance bonus to that check.

The stink of Blodplättar lingers on Vorcan's breath, when she licks her teeth she can still taste marrow, deep in the crevices. It won't go away. She pays a visit Dr. Magnus's temporary dental shack to have her teeth cleaned. No one else is in yet this early in the morning.

"Doctor Smiley, these frostbitten brutes made me chew reindeer gore last night! Atrocities pile upon our shoulders. And my poor teeth…"

She glances over the good Doctor's pewter tray of tools… the bone scooper, number 18 forceps, and cortical drill. The twisty countersink bit has long filaments of bloody ysoki fur wound into its grooves and sticking out like miniature bolts of red lightning. She changes her mind.

    "… are perfectly fine."

Desperately trying to concoct another reason for visiting the dental clinic so as not to disappoint her friend, she concocts a new idea.

"Yes. Perfectly fine. I am considering, Doctor Smiley, how we might infiltrate Crownhold. Perhaps I could lend you some assistance with crafting a special tool for the job. For example, we might forge documents from Kranold Buergon, allowing us entry into the stronghold as merchants delivering goods. Or, perhaps you have some other clever idea. If so, I am willing to be your assistant today."

Adlets are easier. Adlets dwell in the farthest, harshest reaches of the Crown of the World. At first glance, these isolated people look much like their Erutaki human cousins; they typically have terra-cotta skin, straight black hair, and compact, powerful builds. However, adlets tend to be taller and more sinewy than their human kin. Up close, adlets' strangeness reveals itself—each sports a maw full of wolflike teeth. Their legs and tail resemble that of a dog.

Vorcan is pretty confident that the former is correct; those are kokogiaks. They really do have a terrible roar that it can wreak the mind and strike fear into the hearts of those who hear. As for the adlets, he concurs, with more information.

Adlets' legends say that long ago, a mighty hunter lost his way far from home and came upon a house of whalebone and ice. A woman dressed in white fox furs greeted him, fed him, and tended to his frostbite. In time, they married and had 10 children, five of whom bore the legs and tails of foxes. These children stayed with their mother, while the other five—born with the legs and tails of wolves— traveled with their father back to the human lands and became the first adlets.

Adlets aren't inherently evil, but their culture is warlike, xenophobic, and noticeably lacking in humility. They see themselves as the natural rulers of the arctic wastes and view everyone else as squatters at best and invaders at worst. A typical adlet is stronger and faster than any mundane human, with the ability to walk naked in a blizzard and call up ice-cold mists. Given that, it's little wonder that adlets have developed something of a superiority complex. Still, while adlet raids are a common problem for travelers in the Crown of the World, a handful of wily and intrepid merchants have forged peaceful relations with certain adlet communities along more common routes.

Vorcan heads back in. There's a lot of repeat and overlap, but nothing new
