You free an ally from restraint. If the trigger was an ally taking damage, the ally gains resistance to all damage against the triggering damage equal to 2 + your level. The ally can attempt to break free of effects grabbing, restraining, immobilizing, or paralyzing them. | GM Super Zero |
An akata is a hairless, blue-skinned quadruped with fearsome jaws, glowing eyes, a pair of thin tails, and a mane of writhing tentacles. It is a strangely silent beast, as it lacks the lungs and vocal chords necessary to vocalize. It also lacks ears, but it has heightened visual and olfactory senses.
When food is scarce, an akata secretes a resin from its pores that forms into a sturdy cocoon of pale green crystal—the skymetal noqual. An akata can hibernate in this cocoon without needing to eat or drink for centuries, though it retains a rudimentary sense of its surroundings and can break out in only a few minutes' time. These cocoons allow the creatures to travel through the void of space, seeking new worlds where they can infect suitable humanoid hosts with their larval young. Once a victim succumbs to this infection, the offspring fight among themselves until one proves the strongest. The surviving akata then animates the corpse—now a void zombie—which shambles about of its own accord.
Professor Whitegourd collects enough samples to impress the Verdant Wheel--and enough extra of the strange leaves covering the creatures to use in the crafting of magic items like a druid's crown!
The party also recovers a few useful items from the zombies, which after all may once have been adventurers themselves. One has the broken hilt of a sword that still bears an intact wounding rune that could be recovered to another way. Another has a vial containing a moderate healing potion in her pocket. Good thing she never had a chance to use it!
They also gather rather a lot of skymetal.
But the cocoons are starting to crack open in earnest now, and... are those more akatas, emerging from the jungle. There sure seems to be a lot of dangerous creatures. And sure, any one of them wouldn't be much of a challenge for adventurers of the Pathfinders' skills! ...assuming there aren't any more of the strange mutated ones with the plant powers. But, uh, is there really anything to be gained from fighting them anyway?
Perhaps it's a better idea just to GET TO THE BOAT!
Weblike fractures spread across the noqual cocoons scattered around the temple. Then, with a sickening crack, the cocoons burst open in a shower of delicate shards. An akata emerges from each one, taking a moment to get back on its feet and steady itself as it prepares to rush the closest source of life it can sense!
This encounter uses the Chase subsystem! Remember that you all have a +2 that you can apply to one skill check you make in the jungle, after rolling, as a benefit from befriending the anito. I don't believe any of you have used it yet.
The remains of the akata pack, shattered noqual cocoons, and some groggy akatas litter the way between the dais and the temple’s exit.
The Pathfinders may attempt to overcome this obstacle by making a DC 22 Acrobatics to hurry to the exit without stumbling, DC 23 Athletics to simply plow through any items or entities in the way, DC 21 Stealth to take cover amid the columns and slip out of the temple, or perhaps another creative solution?
