The cleric inquires about the Baneblades of Demron, What makes them so powerful?
"They're fiend-slayers, from what I remember of my schooling," Kel replied. "There was also something about them being rather picky about their wielders."
Nose inside Elminster's book, Nim said "All the major players on both sides are documented, we have to search for someone who isn't listed. Not an easy task although I suppose divinations might help."
Kel wracked her memory for any useful information about these two people.
Kel has obviously had no previous contact with either Elminster or the Simbul, and I'm not going to make any assumptions about her knowing the things which I know on the meta-plane. :)
Knowledge (History) for anything to do with either Elminster and/or the Simbul:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19.
I really hope that the Arcana check's formatting works out ...
ETA: Well, the attempted fancy formatting for the Arcana check did not work out. :(
Taking 10 on the Arcana check for famous spellcasters = 12 10 (DC 10 is the most that she can attain because she's not trained in that particular knowledge).

Looks like you don't know who the Simbul is.
This is the first time you met her, and you wonder why she didn't introduce herself before. However, you do know of her exploits at defending her home from Thay.
Calardanion focuses his breathing and calls upon his link with Deneir, recalling any knowledge that he knows about the Baneblades of Demron. To anyone observing, he appears to go still and enter into a meditative pose while still standing.
Using focused trance from lore mystery of oracle class, to get a +20 on an intelligence based check, has been factored into the roll below.
That basically means that you know about the Blades, you just don't know what they looked like. You can try again, of course.
By RAW, there is no overall rule about critical successes and failures for skill checks (unlike attack rolls and saving throws). Of course, every GM has their own selection of house rules.

"Ah, yes," Kel said enthusiatically, "I remember reading about your amazing defence of Aglarond against the Thavian menace. Most impressive!"
Nim was suddenly a little starstruck, she'd read an awful lot of things about The Simbul. She smiled and said a little lamely, "A pleasure to meet you ma'am. Do you have any advice for us?"
Best advice I was ever given was to Not Get Deads. the sardonism oozes from Strigh's lips, I still think that is a very pertinent , salient point, So let's try to follow it. However, advice beyond that would be welcome. Best to go into a suicide mission knowing if its harikari or just suicide.
Thinking out loud the cleric/wizard asks, When we go back in time will our equipment and clothes match the correct time period? When it is time to return to our time, if we return to our time, will gear that we acquire return with us?
"No, your clothes and equipment won't match the correct time period," the Simbul explains. "But if you return to our time, the gear you have will return with you."
"I bet," says Elminster. "I have set up a room for which you can change your clothes to the proper fashion during that time period."
Elminster waves a hand, and the ramps move to another door. One that is made of pine wood and stained to look dark. "Inside that room, you will find proper period clothes. For both male and female," Elminster explains.
"And kobold I hope. I don't think a loincloth would be good." Luile remarks with a grin, at least you think that is what the big toothy mouth is doing.
"Magically made clothes? And the first task upon arrival will be visiting a tailor? Something seems off about that." Luile says with amusement as she picks her way through clothes like a likn deciding which antelope to eat.
The cleric/wizard will change his clothing to the period appropriate of course. When he is changed he makes sure to make sure that his holy symbol is prominently displayed.
Kel took the time to find some clothing with a suitably military cut. Absolutely no floofy ballgowns for me! She finally settled on two sets of everyday wear, one of which was in the colour combinations commonly seen on Corellon's priests.
She changed into the more generic set and carefully put the other one into her backpack.
"I guess that I'm ready," Kel said.
A thought struck her suddenly, and she continued, "Wait, what about coinage? Using modern coins would also make us stand out."
Nim almost cried when she saw the clothes, letting out a small gasp she exclaimed, "Who cares if they're conjured, seeing these is almost like coming home! Finally some sensible clothes that don't look ridiculous!"
It was quite possible the others didn't share Nim's enthusiasm for a style of clothing the best past of a thousand years out of date...
Tight fitting leather made trousers, a tabbard and tunic of similiar black. vest with tons of pockets and loops. Soft leather boots made supple before crafting. Quickly Strigh strips out of his clothes and then taking time to make sure everything is just right, dresses meticulously in the chosen clothes.
"I'm not sure that would be required. Coins don't exactly have dates on them. We might recognize them as more recent, but to them, they'll just be foreign coins from an unknown place." Luile interjects as she struggles with cutting wing slits in a large (not gnomish, how insulting) coat.

"Some mints do put a date on their coins," Kel pointed out.
Calardanion gets changed into appropriate clothing, simple and practical. As long as it was functional and suited for the purpose of not sticking out, then it was fine by his books.
"Is there some way we can contact you when we are done, or will it be up to us to find a way back?" he inquires to Elminster.

"I'll provide you with a magic item that works like the Device of Time Journeying," Elminster said. "After all, am I not the great Elminster?"
