Suppose the only odd thing we have so far is the founder death being wrong...births/deaths etc?
Anyone got other ideas?
Can we each take a topic or just one?

DM Kludde |

You'd have to be focused on a single topics, with everyone looking for the same things. You can look for persons (E.g. Berlla Tonhue, or the daughter of the upset farmer) or specific record (e.g. a passenger record for the original colonist, or any records of the mines)
Verrekk seems to be lost in thought, definitely looking for something interesting, if only he could say what it was...

![]() |

Umbro-187 seems out of his element when it comes to academic research.

![]() |

I think it would be interesting to look for more inconsistencies in the dates. Or is this too general a request?

![]() |

We have an inconsistency with the Kasatha being here. Lets look up records about them. When they first appeared for example and from where.

![]() |

And the Vesk seems like a 'cool story'

Unless we're in a hurry no reason we can't hang out here for a while
It'll take you six hours, but it's a free saturday, so why not
Going to need some aid anothers on those first two checks
Roquesfort takes a while ot get the hang of the archive, and his searches for Berlla or the Farmers daughter don't progress that quickly.
...but he eventually finds a death certificate for Berlla Tonhue, dated 20 years prior to the date on the plaque (and reconciling with the original date). Cause of death: gunshot wound. Unless this colony preserves the right to arm bears, this wasn't an animal attack.
There's also a death certificate for an ysoki girl named 'Ongie'. The attached report notes that no body was found, and she was presumed to be killed and eaten by rock bears during a hunting trip.
Roquefort finds a list of colonists. A century has passed, and that takes its toll - there no hope of finding any of the original colonists. The passenger records indicate ysoki, lashunta, humans, androids, but definitely no Kasatha or Vesk arrivals on the original colony ship.
Roquefort finds some records on the mines, mostly output numbers. There's not a single mention on what is actually being mined, but regardless, it looks like the output is much higher than a town this size would need, and would require extensive mines, labor, and infrastructure. These records are clearly incomplete, but it looks like the mine was opened a few years after the colony was founded and remains in operation today.

Gunnz is more than willing to help out. If there is one thing she is good at it is spotting the night life of an area. Oh, not that kind of help? Oh well, she is practiced in all kinds of information discovery.
Can auto aid on a culture checks with a +10 bonus

![]() |

"So, Berlla got murdered and they covered it up"
"Ongie is a missing person, not necessarily a dead one - or they covered that up too"
"Sounds like a second lot turned up and took over the colony"
"And they are mining here to export off-world, which accounts for the spaceport and the modern medicines and the like"
"So how long before the sheriff tries murdering us you reckon?"

DM Kludde |

Anything else you want to do in the town hall?

![]() |

Gunnz opens her eyes wide as Boquefort makes his conclusions. "Wow.. I didn't put all that together." she glances at the walls.
"I hope there are no listening devices around. Either way, if they want to keep a low profile killing off a Starfinder expedition isn't going to help with that."

![]() |

"You see they will have it on record they warned us about the rock bears, but you know, Starsfinders being Starfinders we couldn't help ourselves and wandered into the woods when the 'great tragedy' struck - they'll put up a nice memorial, then use that as a cautionary tale to ward off future expeditions - lovely town, self-sufficient, no reason to visit, horribly hostile surrounds"
"I'm starting to wonder when that engineer spoke of needing to think of their family and if they really meant think of their family - maybe some of these people aren't happy and realise that smell isn't just the manure on the fields"
"Let's go talk to the farmer and see what he has to say about this case of missing persons"

![]() |

"Yeap that struck me as odd as well. " agrees Gunnz.
"Farmer it is. Which is hopefully conveniently closer to the woods too. Can we make a remote update to the Pegasus's logs and make sure it is well encrypted? You know... just in case."

![]() |

"I agree, we should talk to the farmer, and if we have to shoot our way out of here we'll do that too."

![]() |

Croaker nods "That does bring like they are trying to preserve the status quo, no matter the price. I think we will not leave this place without a fight. Let's speak with the farmer"

DM Kludde |

East of town lie sprawling farmlands, each with their fields surrounded by wire fences. The fences are clearly electrified, possibly to keep wildlife out.
The fences are hardwired and don't have avisible power source or means of control
In the distance, Roget can be spotted.

"Odd... look at those fences. Hardwired and without obvious power or control..."

![]() |

"Unusual set-up, haven't seen wandering mobs of wild herbivores that might come and eat all their crops; we should go ask Roget a few questions about farming..."

![]() |

Umbro-187 observes the farm from a distance through his rifle's sniper scope. He pays particular attention to any areas that could be used for an ambush.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19

DM Kludde |

Rogets spots the approaching group quite late, and seems to be startled to see them here. He doesn't seem to be very willing to talk to the group, and starts to walk away.

![]() |

"HEY WAIT! WHICH WAY TO THE BEST FRUIT AND VEG? WHICH WAY ARE THE BEARS?" Roquefort calls ahead and outpaces the fellow Ysoki whilst waving in a friendly manner.
Performing for the cameras, the dumber they think we are, the more they will underestimate us

DM Kludde |

Shh... Roget answers They're listening Roget says as Roquefort closes in. Even when the Ysoki gets closer, Roget refuses to say anything ...

![]() |

Gunnz eyes up the man whispering "How" as she glides past him. "I so want to see a Rock Bear! I wonder if I could get a plushy made? Are there craft stores?" in her best giggly girl voice.

DM Kludde |

Why you... Roget says, clearly very upset ... why don't you leave me alone? Can't you see I am in grief?
This Ysoki is mulling something over, but he's not reasy to act yet. Perhaps he needs some time to think things over...

"OK, NO PROBLEM, WE WILL FIND OUR OWN WAY! HAVE A GOOD AFTERNOON!"

![]() |

Umbro-187 would prefer to take action now, but he decides to trust the detective instincts of Roquefort.

![]() |

Gunnz looks around for anyone else who might be able to direct her to a craft store that sells stuffed toy rock-bears.
"Oh yes... the mission. We need to look around the outskirts too I guess. Who knows what craft stores we might find? Are we going to be sleeping in the Spitfire tonight, or shall we get some accommodation here?"

DM Kludde |

Where would you want to go next

![]() |

Unless the others agree to rock-bear-plushy shopping, I think we are heading to do a survey of the woods. Were there any other in-town locations we have been made aware of that we have not visited yet?

![]() |

I'm tracking we cleared all the town buildings and so it was just the farmland/woods/mines - so woods and to the mines I suppose

![]() |

Umbro's got an itchy trigger finger that only some rock bears can solve.

DM Kludde |

The forest outside of Braerton is lush, with dense vegetation and a wide variety of insects and animals. Aaah cute, squoxes...
This is quite a peaceful forest, and there's no sign of dangerous wildlife, not even up in the trees.
There is actually a trail here, and it leads in the general direction of where the mine should be.

![]() |

life science: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20

Gunnz nods. "Yeap, look at this, they even left a blaze mark on the tree."
She smiles. "Or it might be a hiking trail with a beautiful mountain view and a waterfall to swim in! Local scenic spot. This place would be a tourist haven... if not for the rock bears."

DM Kludde |

About five miles outside the village, the trail leads to a miningsite. The site looks quiet, with only administrators, armed guards, and a few battered mining robots in view. There are a few employees around the mine entrance and a central office. There's nobody who looks like a miner.
From this vantage point you can make a Profession (Miner), Engineering or Physical Science check. You might be able to get closer unseen with a Stealth check. You can also get closer while being seen.

![]() |

Life Science 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (17) + 17 = 34
"Anyone else notice the absolute lack of any real predators, not even drop-bears let alone rock bears. This is a peaceful forest... even the rock bears are part of a fabrication, though I am sure these hills are probably full of shallow graves from down in the town"

![]() |

Engineering: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (17) + 17 = 34
I think they will soon find out that they have made a grave mistake if they decide to put us in these forest graves too. Verrek says this thoughtfully while looking at the mines.

DM Kludde |

Verrek has a look at the scale of the digs, rubble, the amount of tracks and heavy material... this mine HUGE. To keep it running you'd need a workforce the size of, let's say, a small town like Braerton. There's also the issue of refineries, or lack thereof. Neither here, nor in town, did you see any installation that would be used for smelting or extracting ore - nothing at all that would convert raw ore into useful material.
Now that the group has spent some time inspecting the site, they notice a loading area near the forest edge where crates are loaded onto trucks.
Which is what you could approach with a stealth check

![]() |

Umbro-187 has a look with his sniper scope and uses his rangefinder to get a bearing on his exact distance to specific areas of interest at the mine. He can tell there is no sign of danger in the forest or even in the trees. Next, he then adapts his camouflage membrane to the surrounding environment before sneakily approaching the trucks. It takes 10 minutes to adapt the membrane to the current environment.
Perception + Sniper Scope: 1d20 + 13 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 13 + 1 = 27
Stealth + Camouflage Membrane: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 2 = 12
Life Science: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26

"TEll you what.." says Gunnz.
"Why don't you lot keep an eye on things, and let a girl do what a girl does best?"
She pauses for a moment before reconsidering. "Well, second best. I fly even better." she adds.
Then... fades into the forest, as if she wasn't ever there.
stealth: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (1) + 21 = 22
And if we hit areas of open ground that need to be gone through... well.. she has a cloaking field that hasn't had much use recently..
It would seem that she has left her internal soundtrack playing SMC and can't keep a bit of a jiggle out of her step.

DM Kludde |

Hey one of the guards shouts when another one points in the direction of Umbro and Gunnz, this mine is dangerous to civilians. No trespassing here, we don't want to be liable for any injuries!

![]() |

"Oh great! Other people! Hi sorry we got turned around" Roquefort comes forth smiling and looking as much like a tourist as possible "which way back to town?" he keeps coming forward excitedly "Could you give us a ride to the nearest safe road then? Would save us walking and having any injuries!"

![]() |

Gunnz looks around. "Wow... What do you guys mine here?" she arts, artlessly.

![]() |

I suggest we just go ahead and give them a chance to stop us if they're that stupid. I'm tired of playing the dumb tourist from the capital worlds. With these words spoken so softly that only the allies could hear, Verrek begins to deliberately walk slowly towards the mines.

![]() |

"Keen not to strike the first blow, Starfinders on camera creating trouble may be just the sort of propaganda they need to solidify their grasp and paint us in a poor light, 'better the devil they know' and all that."

![]() |

Umbro-187 really has no way of explaining why he was crawling through the grass while wearing a camouflage netting when the guards spotted him, so he lets the others do the talking.

![]() |

"Our buddy here is terrified about the Rock Bears so he's trying to hide himself from them, do you think you could help out?"

![]() |

"Yes, the rock bears..."
