Olombe moves forward and gives a quick lecture on the dangers of close formation.

"While a close formation has some advantages I think you'll find that it can be quite dangerous when there are spellcasters about. They can often take advantage of a tight grouping with something like this..."

He holds his arms outstretched and sprays three of the students with fine fiery embers. Basic reflex save DC 19 from Thisnabel, Dura and Rhenei. They will likely be dazzled to some degree.

Sam and Olombe continue to show that you don't necessarily need weapons to fight; Sam steps up and drops rocks on top of Rhenei and Thisnabel and Olombe follows it up with a spray of stars right to the face, catching Dura for good measure as well. While Rhenei is caught by surprise by the falling rocks Thisnabel manages to dive out of the way completely! However, the gnome isn't quick enough to avoid the fiery spray and neither is Dura. Rhenei does manage to dodge part of it.

"Owowowowow!" Thisnabel cries, clearly not happy about the small burns she just received. "Dura, Rhenei! Take care of those guys, okay?" The little gnome moves out of the uneven, rocky patch of ground and circles around behind Gilgamesh before taking a swing at him with her own dueling sword and missing the mark by a country mile. "Grr...I'll get you next time!" she growls as she raises her sword and adopts a defensive posture.

"On it," Dura responds as she advances on Olombe. "Nothing personal," she grins as she delivers two strikes in quick succession to the old storyteller. While the wounds are deep, those watching can see Dura frown with surprise as she finds that her blade doesn't cut quite as much as she was clearly expecting. "Huh! That's a neat trick." Olombe takes a total of 21 piercing damage, after his resistances are factored in.

I probably should have been clearer. spray of stars has the following effects in addition to fire damage depending on reflex saves:

Critical Success The creature is unaffected.
Success The creature takes half damage and is dazzled for 1 round.
Failure The creature takes full damage and is dazzled for 3 rounds.
Critical Failure The creature takes double damage and is dazzled for 1 minute.

You were super clear - I just got interrupted a time or two while writing that last post and apparently forgot to account for dazzled. My bad!

As happens on occasion, time gets wibbly and wobbly and shows a glimpse of a future that could have happened, in another timeline. Time then snaps back into place and as Dura advances on Olombe, the old storyteller only suffers a single - though still annoyingly painful - wound. "I can't see! What kind of magic was that?" she asks, shaking her head in an effort to clear the stars from her eyes.

Olombe suffers one less attack and only takes 14 slashing.

Princess Sunset toddles up and voices her disapproval of the situation to Halran, her words creeping into his mind and leaving him stunned! Squish then blubs sympathetically to Olombe and repairs nearly all of the damage that Dura had done before moving up to join the rest of his allies.

"Hmm...interesting to face so many spellcasters," Rhenei squints as she moves a few paces forward, humming to herself. Suddenly she raises her hands and a cone of fire billows forth over the four Pathfinders who are conveniently grouped together.

As the flames billow forth, Sam is able to mostly get out of the way but Princess Sunset, Squish, and Olombe aren't as quick and get the full brunt of the flames. Taking advantage of Halran's stunned condition Gilgamesh hauls off and aims two punches at his face, with the first one connecting. He then steps out of the flank he'd found himself in and throws a punch at Rhenei, who ducks out of the way. Sev considers his options for a moment and then directs a barrage of magical missiles at Halran, leaving him bloodied.

"I hate fighting spellcasters," he groans as he steps after the half-orc. He tries to fight past the mental block placed on him by Princess Sunset but can't do it; he doubles over in pain as the psychic backlash strikes his mind.

"ARRGH!"

Rightfully offended at being toasted, Sam fires back at Rhenei with a pile of loose debris and leaves them quite bloodied and injured! She then reapplies her magical shield.

Olombe has no desire to suffer more at the hands of Dura and so steps away from the half-orc. As he does, Dura manages to see through the stars in her eyes long enough to take advantage of the opportunity - she slashes at him and reopens the wound that was just healed! (Critical Hit; after resistances Olombe takes 13 piercing damage.) He tries to command Dura to drop her weapon but this time she resists the magic entirely.

"H-Hey! Come back here!"

Thisnabel steps after Gilgamesh and attempts to come to Rhenei's aid. She squints hard and manages to pinpoint Gilgamesh's location, taking two swings with her sword. While the first swing whizzes past, the second manages to connect and leaves a bloody wound down his arm. (Gilgamesh takes 13 piercing damage.)

Indeed. That was my intention. Although it looks like Dura did not actually take a turn. Did she step, strike and step back perhaps? Or if her turn was forgotten perhaps she steps up and strikes twice. She would need to make another attack if that is the case.

The area around Princess Sunset turns black as her psyche breakes. The walls of reality crumble and fall as they are replaced with giant wooden toy blocks and massive toy castles much too big for anyone. "I told you not to hurt him."

As she puts an even stronger mental lock onto Rhenei Princess Sunset's mind seems to calm Golgames slightly. Restore the mind- Gilgamesh heals 8 hp.

Time continues to fluctuate strangely, for a moment showing a future in which Dura was able to swipe at Olombe as he stepped away from her, before snapping back to normal. The half-orc gives her head a funny shake, though she still manages to resist the old storyteller's magical command. "Okay, this is getting too weird! Who's doing that??" She shoots an accusatory look at Princess Sunset before stepping after Olombe and attempting to strike twice with her sword; while the first one is still a painful hit, the second misses entirely.

No AoOs happen; Dura instead steps and strikes twice. First strike is still a hit for 13 damage after resistances, second strike misses.

Opting to focus-fire, Squish unleashes the full power of his mind and flings a handful of the scattered scree at Halran. The rocks and debris absolutely pummel him and with a groan, Halran collapses to the ground! Princess Sunset also unleashes the power of her mind, turning her attention now to Rhenei and putting a mental block on the caster's mind. She then uses a small portion of her power to heal some of Gilgamesh's wounds.

"Well, that isn't good," Rhenei sighs as Halran is dropped by a hail of rocks and debris. They step around Gilgamesh and put their back to the wall, before narrowing their eyes as they concentrate...and manage to completely surmount Princess Sunset's mental block! Managing to see through the haze of stars clouding their vision, they aim a jet of pressurized water at Gilgamesh...and just miss hitting him!

Olombe continues to step back, firing off another orb of flame at Dura that whizzes past her shoulder. Sev, on the other hand, moves right up close and uses his magic to give the half-orc an electric shock that rattles her teeth! (No metal armor, alas - she's wearing leather.)

Gilgamesh, not impressed by Thisnabel's aim, delivers a solid punch to the face that would've probably knocked out some teeth were it not for the magical warding placed over the fighting arena. She does manage to dodge the follow-up punch however, as does Dura when he steps up to her and takes a swing. (First punch was a crit, nice!)

Also not impressed is Sam, who aims to put a stop to Rhenei's antics by flinging another handful of scree at the tricksy ysoki. The rocks and pebbles connect with a thunderous noise and when it's all said and done, they look like they're barely keeping on their feet.

Thisnabel seems to decide to switch gears and instead of pursuing Gilgamesh, she turns her attention to Squish and circles around behind him. She squints hard and takes a swing with her sword; though Squish tries to dodge the blow he's not fast enough and suffers a slash. The gnome tries to repeat her success but can't see well enough to aim, blinking rapidly due to the stars still in her eyes. (Squish takes 12 slashing damage.)

"Thanks This," Dura smiles as Thisnabel conveniently sets up a flank with her against Squish. "Let's see how well you resist a blade, eh?" She manages to see through the veil of stars clouding her vision and jabs Squish once and then again with her dueling sword, (presumably) dropping him to the ground! (Barring any resistances or reactions in play, Squish takes another 32 piercing and is now Dying 1.) Dura then puts a little space between herself and Gilgamesh and Sev.

Though having collapsed only moments before, Princess Sunset's powers are enough to restore Squish to the waking world and he's quick to scramble to his feet and retreat. Unfortunately, his mind is still fuzzy from his brush with death and his attempt at shielding magic fizzles out.

Sam also falls back a step before using her magic to scoop up more scree and fling it at Dura, who takes several small rocks and pebbles to the face!

Trusting his allies to have Dura and Thisnabel handled for the moment, Gilgamesh turns his full attention to Rhenei. He moves up into their space and aims a flurry of punches at them! While the first and last punches miss their mark, the second connects with an ear and leaves it bruised.

"Huh?"

Dura, caught by surprised, looks down at her shoes only to be beaned upside the head by Olombe's thrown rock.

"Ow, hey!"

Both her and Thisnabel are then subjected to another blast of electricity from Sev, though they do see it coming and manage to avoid part of it. Thisnabel scowls at Squish and steps towards him, cutting him yet again with her sword and leaving him barely on his feet. A follow-up strike blessedly misses the mark, as the last bit of stars cloud her vision one more time. "Next time you'll stay down!"

"This, forget Squishy for a moment and give me a hand!" Dura calls to her ally before stepping after Olombe once more and aiming another strike at him, which is thwarted by the sudden cloudiness in her vision. The second try, unfortunately, hits the mark and Olombe's world goes dark.

After resistances Olombe takes 17 piercing, which I think puts him at exactly 0 HP unless I've missed any reactions or other effects.

Even though they've been giving as good as they've gotten, the students are definitely looking worse for the wear; Dura in particular though Rhenei looks rather bloodied as well.

Sam flings another pile of rocks at Dura, pummeling her nearly senseless. Sev follows this up by directing an arc of electricity at her as well as at Rhenei. While Rhenei manages to dodge part of it, Dura isn't so lucky and collapses to the ground, her clothing smoking slightly.

Though she managed to avoid the worst of the magic, Rhenei isn't nearly as fortunate when it comes to Gilgamesh's fists. The half-orc delivers a flurry of blows, pummeling the ysoki about the head and knocking them out cold!

While Squish had been planning to direct his next assault at Dura, he finds himself left with Thisnabel as his only remaining target. He blubs and flings oozy drippings and phantom blocks at the little gnome with powerful force, striking her in the chest and flinging her limp body backwards several feet. As she slides to a stop, Marcos and Orlaelia both call out, "And we have a winner!"

Combat Over!

With the duel over, the two masters are quick to revive the unconscious students before leading everyone back to the sitting room where further healing is provided. Before you know it, everyone's looking hale and hearty once more - if it weren't for the singe marks and perforations on various pieces of clothing and armor, it'd almost be like the duel never even happened.

"Well done, Pathfinders," Orlaelia smiles. "I'm certain my students have learned a thing or two from their duel with you."

"Agreed," Marcos nods. "Still, you certainly gave them a run for their money. Well fought, all around! And a well fought battle deserves a mighty feast - I've arranged for a magnificent meal for everyone at one of Restov's finest taverns. Afterwards, feel free to spend the night here at Birchwood Hall and worry about heading back to Absalom tomorrow."

And so you end the day with full bellies and satisfied in the knowledge that not only have you made new friends, but also forged new alliances for the Pathfinder Society.
