I'm looking at Slyph Rogue from Qadira with the Exchange Agent campaign trait. As an added quirk, I'm planning on having a bit of a language barrier, coming from so far away. Not a permanent thing, but I've got a mechanic in mind I'm interested in trying out to simulate differences in dialect and language learning. I anticipate resolving it within a fairly short time, but think it will be fun to play with.
Shathee |
Shathee grew up in the glorious city of Katheer, in the heart of Qadira, with world-famous academies, the famed palace of Xerbystes II, as well as caravan and goods from all of creation. The city is filled with splendor like no other. Unfortunately, Shathee was only able to see it from the shadows. Growing up, he fell in with a few friends who were just as poor, and all were taken under the wing of a halfling from the Qadiran thieves' guild, Analeus.
Analeus ran a delivery business and used Shathee and other halfling children as inconspicuous couriers. It helped their families make ends meet and as they grew up, he taught them extra skills to bring in a little extra coin. Eventually, Slathee surpassed the halfling children despite their natural litheness. He was always quiet and kept to himself, but could pick marks through a crowd and vanish before anyone one was the wiser.
Eventually, he was caught but it wasn't by the authorities. Shathee had picked a wayfinder off of a Pathfinder agent and the man tracked him down. Denough was impressed by the youngsters abilities and introduced Shathee to the Qadiran Pathfinder Lodge. He was taken in as an initiate. He had never learned the common tongue of the region, but spoke Kelish and Halfling well. He began working so he could communicate a bit better with other agents. They found his talents suited him well to field work and offered him a chance to harness his skills a bit more in Varisia.

Bonjour Citoyens! Let us have some grand and well renumerated adventures!
If you need any help, I am typically available.
Monsiur Shatee, I believe we will be fast flanking buddies!
Aurie de Valois |
Added Phoenix, which does work fully if you are not meleeing and definitly fits her flair.
Abberant would be mechanically stronger, but ehhh, does not fit her flavor.

"The team that flanks together still needs to avoid being stupid. Stupid hurts. Sometimes a LOT."
I good sir am indeed well acquainted to this mechanic. Once I got drunk and accepted a dare to wrestle a reefclaw. Not one of my brightest moments!

Ok, I am trying to work out something with one of the other characters but no response as of yet. Anyway, you are all prodigies, therefore, you get either a +4 to any one stat or two stats with +2. Please let me know which way you wish to go. No adjusting any other scores to accommodate, this is to stack on top of your earlier choices.
Leylia Lucresh |
Oh crap I didn't even get the dot about selection closing! Boards are acting funky these days; this isn't the first time new posts have just passed me by with no notification! SORT YOURSELVES OUT, PAIZO. Also, yay more PBP! Luck be a dragon tonight!
Okay so we get a couple +2s to throw on top, either to one score or two? Okay, interesting...
Aurie de Valois |
Ohhhhh
Damn, 22 dex at level 1, 26 dex if bloodraging? Count me in.
It definitly alters my purchasing priorities (spider silk armor is likely a bit hard to get, but the city is large enough I think).
Aurie de Valois |
Reconsidering a bit, I am switching to 20 dex and 16 cha (+2 to dex +2 to cha). 3 grit pool is a lot more then 2 :).
Something else that is interesting is that the houseruled change to improved critical actually opens up weapon choices, since 18+ crit weapon are no longer >>> then the alternatives.
I may actually dip in Falcata swashbuckler, because I think thats a Magnimar thing too and would fit thematically.
Leylia Lucresh |
I COULD go straight to 20 int...but I don't really see this character going for blasts or a lot of save-or-suck spells so I'm not necessarily concerned about that...more skills are always nice but I feel like I've got most of the good ones I care about...on the other hand, I can learn spells similar to wizards which takes spellcraft.
Yeah, I'll go with the super nerd route. buffs a lot of my skills anyway. +4 INT it is.
Aurie de Valois |
Did some quality of live purchases and upgraded her rapier to cold iron, because you just cant go wrong if one and its cheap.
In stark contrast to many other builds I do, she cant just murder her way through DR :).
Shathee |
My apologies for Shathee's grammar, but I'm doing a bit of an experiment (with GM's permission). I'm having him be mostly literate in Common and hope to have him become more proficient over the first couple of levels.
To that extent, I'm using Google Translate to assist in the matter to simulate learning a language. For everything said in Common, I'm translating it into another language (Danish seems to be working well right now) and then Shathee can understand what is actually translated back into English. Same for what he wants to say versus the words that he actually puts together.
Leylia Lucresh |
Resourceful. Props for committing to the RP.

Ok I printed out the how to format your text so I am going to try and keep up with the group on text. I type things but don't have not posted due to being intimidated by your great posts :(
Leylia Lucresh |
Don't feel bad; sometimes it takes time to develop the personality of a character in text. It might be a bit before you really find your rhythm but that's all part of the life.
Aurie de Valois |
Dont worry about that at all!
We all started at some point, Aurie is a female version of a character I play elsewhere, so she has a personality in my mind, which makes things faaar easier.
Some tricks I find usefull:
deepl is a pretty good translator. I frequently use Russian for Abyssal, Swedish for Giant etc. it helps me get in the mood. I find it greatly superior to google translate.
As easy way to make a magus distinctive is if he says something in celestial/latin/romanian whenever he casts a spell.
Swearing in a different language when under stress can be a pretty funny character trait, and often lead to fascinating questions such as
"Why are you speaking Abyssal with an Alyushinyrran court accent?"
"Perhaps I should ask you instead why you know what an Alyushinyrran court accent in Abyssal sounds like?"
I use "X pauses" a lot to break up long monolouges. Instead of pause, you can do stuff like "twirls her hair" or "touches his spellbook absentmindedly" as like, little ticks to bring your character to live.
And one mantra to repeat: We are all here to have fun together and tell a cool story!
Yahto |
It is an actual goal that everyone at the table gets a chance to shine, to demonstrate that their character is actually good at one thing or another.
Some are good at specific skills, whether languages, knowledge, interaction, thievery, or even simply entertainment. Others are good at specific types of combat.
I have a two-handed fighter who likes to sit back and let the "big brains" decide what to do next, but he has maxed Dungeouneering and Engineering skills, and out of nowhere this thug in a box has the answer the group needs at the moment. Heck, I once had a character whose primary schtick was that he ended up being reincarnated VERY early in the game, and he spent the rest of the campaign trying to get back to something approximating his original form.
Your thing could be anything. You could sketch interesting buildings or natural vistas that you stumble on in your travels. You could try very, very hard to be a ladies man, and whether you are any good at it or not is just part of the schtick. Sometimes it is better to put something in during character creation (small for a Shoanti, so he's not a brute fighter for Yahto). Sometimes it is far more fun to discover what comes up along the way (reincarnation dude). You can even do BOTH!
This is PLAY. Have fun with it!
Khobin |
Thanks for all the moral support it means a lot
Khobin |
so the dwarf just vanished? so does that mean I am standing outside alone now?
Leylia Lucresh |
So we have, what, 5 right now? There's me, Aurie, Khobin, Shathee and Yahto, right? I see Charles the Wizard in our player list but I don't recall seeing him post. Life throwing him curveballs, I assume. Hope things are alright. So we've got a 3/2 split unless someone goes alone (DONTDOIT) so my initial guess is probably me, Yahto and Aurie in one group? Haven't really done a major analysis of all strengths yet but just on my impressions that seems balanced. Honest confession: I'm almost certain I'm the weakest combatant in the group right now. Can't wait till level 2.
I'm open to counterarguments, naturally.
Khobin |
so the full BAB would be Yahoo and Aurie?
The light would be Leylia and Khorbin
Then Shathee gets to pick which team
So Yahoo or Aurie pick which light you want? Leylia or Khobin
Leylia Lucresh |
Do you, uhhh...Yahoo?
YAAA HOOOOOOOOoooo...
No? Nobody remembers? Come on now...
Leylia Lucresh |
Oh yeah! That's what I keep forgetting to do! It's been nagging at me lately but my brain's been failing to bring it to the fore.
Leylia Lucresh |
Wanna know something ironic? I got into a shattered star campaign once years ago at precisely this point in the story because they'd lost half their team to inactivity too.
Funny how things sometimes come full circle...here's hoping this one makes it further, aye?
