Wonder abounds! The Pathfinder Society's vaults have suddenly recieved a huge treasure trove of precious items from around the world and beyond. Much remains mysterious about these objects, from their origins to the reason the trove's original owner was so desperate to be rid of it. A group of novice agents has the opportunity to explore the troves' wonders for themselves, but not all is as it seems. After being drawn into an otherworldly realm, they must use their wits and fight to escape with their lives!
Please only post in the Recruitment thread until you have been specifically told you've been accepted into the game.

Rain in Cloudy Day has a bright green body and a purple mushroom “cap” atop his head, and he wears a white scarf and brown vest emblazoned with the Glyph of the Open Road. Grand Archivist Zarta Dralneen has long dark hair and black nail polish and is wearing a vibrant blue dress. Both greet the group of Pathfinders in a vault filled with newly acquired treasures, which Rain calls the “Vault of Boundless Wonder!”—a phrase he exclaims while excitedly waving his hands. Art on Slide 3.
Rain excitedly recognizes Isaku from their role in retrieving the oubliette from the Azlanti ruins, and begins describing how it pales in comparison to the treasures here. Zarta Dralneen watches the conversation with amusement, but as it begins to drag, she clears her throat to remind Rain of his current mission.
Rain in Cloudy Day waves exuberantly to indicate the piles of treasure in the vaulted chamber. “Just look at all these magic items! And enchanted weapons! And a skull that always looks at me funny! Big magic books about even bigger magic books! Well, I’m not sure about that last one. I haven’t read them. Cataloging all this treasure is bound to be exciting! It sure beats sorting the mail.”
Zarta leads the group through the vaults. She runs her fingertips along the table, lifts a strange hourglass, and inspects it with dubious curiosity. “Exciting, yes, and possibly quite dangerous.”
Rain frowns. “Well, yes, but… at least we’re in the safety of the Lodge? Can’t be that bad! You said these items are harmless.” He picks up a skull from the table. Its eyes glow with pink fire, and it speaks, “Unhand me, you hideous rotten mushroom! Harmless?! How dare you!” Rain replaces the skull and covers it with a cloth, muffling the voice.
“Well… mostly harmless?”
Zarta fails to stifle a grin. She tilts the hourglass this way and that, shrugs, and sets it back on the table. “Yes, mostly harmless. We believe these items present no major threat to us, and we’ve secured those we believe to be cursed. The true danger comes from an old enemy of the Pathfinder Society, the night hag Aslynn. She nearly claimed these treasures for herself before they were entrusted to us. We don’t know why she needs the items, or which ones are most central to her wicked plans. I’m off to a meeting to discuss the situation with Eliza, Ambrus, and the faction leaders. You’ll stay here with Rain and continue cataloging these objects. We need to learn where the items come from and understand what they do. Then we can decide what to do with them. Any questions?”
Please introduce your characters and ask questions about the mission.
Isaku Beru
|
A tall well-dressed man approaches the group.
"Well met, Pathfinders. Isaku Beru is what I'm called." He sees the somewhat star-struck look on Rain's face and smiles at the leshy. "My part in the narrative is overblown. Trust me, it's not as glorious as what the chronicler makes it to be. Yes, the treasures here are much more interesting than what we found underground."
Isaku appears dressed for action. From the pistol on his belt and the shiny new shortsword (unused, I might add!) on his other hip, and the throwing knives on the bandolier across his chest, he appears ready for anything.
Anyone who has read Clive Cussler will recognize the inspiration for this guy! :)
Snarlfist
|
A tall, pale skinned lanky hobgoblin leans heavily on a spear, quite a few medical supplies hanging from a pair of sachels.
"Snarlfist, Medic." snarls the Hobgoblin
Snarlfist ponders for a moment before asking "Other than that skull, does anything else in these piles talk?"
Zaza the Measure
|
A tall, attractive half-orc woman dressed conservatively in purple robes nods briefly at the other pathfinders. "Zaza the Measure, sorceress." She looks carefully at the items before her.
"Who is this 'Aslynn' and how did we 'acquire' these items from her?"
Rose Goldenoak
|
In the corner stands a medium hight dwarf of dark skin. She is wearing leather boots, brown pants and a belt with steel buckle, one holster holds a clan pistol that she carries openly.
Her both hands are covered with red gloves, and her hair are neatly wrapped behind her hair to not get in the way. On her belt she carries bullets, powder and other devices that you could image are serving to reload and clean her weapon.
On top of that she carries a long and a bit warm coat. You might not notice it, but at the back of her belt she has a second holster with another pistol. She looks at Zarta mesmerized with her. Did they change the graphics for Zarta, she always looked to me like a femme fatale, constant manipulator, I am so disappointed that she was not present in PF2 more :(
But when Rain raises the skull and it started to speak, in an instant she reached for her clan pistol and aimed it at the talking 'artifact'.
"Sorry, is that normal around here? I am new, Rose Goldenoak, at your service. My clan decided that for me to be a better negotiator I could get some experience with Society. Actually my aunt recommended that, Makai. Sorry but I am babbling, you know first mission."
Zaza the Measure
|
Zaza points to a corner of the room. "Rufus, üle!" Once the dog sits in the indicated spot she continues her examination of the artifacts.
"Apologies for Rufus. He's still a pup and doesn't quite know all the rules yet."
Arfsnarf Ah'sneeze
|
A goblin in a draconic jump-suit stumbles into the midst of those gathered already.
Sorting treasure? That's the mission? Rain doesn't trust society interns with these objects? So, hey, can we just split this stuff up and take it home to sort? I hear working from the home is popular lately!
As they go along he is particularly amused by the skull with pink, fiery eyes.
Wait Rain! Maybe you make that one into familiar! Would be good for a sorcerer or wizard!
He rolls his "clack-rock" (which looks suspiciously like a d20) in his clawed hand as they continue on.
Finally, when they stop and Zarta departs, Arfsnarf asks Rain What we know about Aslynn's plans at all, apart from these items? Has she made trouble for the society in the past?
Avery Wings
|
A tall elven woman walks graciously into the vault. Her ponytailed long hair swings back and forth as she joins the others inside. Following and flying behind her is an owl. It lands on her shoulder when she comes to a stop to greet the others and introduce herself. ”Greetings. I am Avery. And this is Sophia.”she says as she scratches the head of her owl. ”And yeah, who is Aslynn?”
Isaku Beru
|
"Hmm. I think it might be worth looking further into this Aslynn. I shall remember to do so when I get back to the office later on."
Active Investigation: Aslynn
| GM Watery Soup |
"Other than that skull, does anything else in these piles talk?"
Zarta says, “One of these is quite enough, thank you. So far, the skull just insults everyone. Maybe you can talk to it and learn more. We haven’t found any other talking creatures in the vault—yet! It’s not our business to keep creatures captive, so we’d like to help get them home if we can, and to keep them safe from Aslynn.”
Almost forgot - art on Slide 4.
"Who is this 'Aslynn' and how did we 'acquire' these items from her?"
What we know about Aslynn's plans at all, apart from these items? Has she made trouble for the society in the past?
”And yeah, who is Aslynn?”
Zarta says, “She caused trouble for the Society a few years back, even tried to capture and sell the soul of our former Master of Spells. We thought we’d seen the last of her after we helped stop her from raiding a magical demiplane known as the Hao Jin Tapestry. Apparently, she’s still hunting for treasures, and she has something horrible planned for the Pathfinder Society.” This is in reference to a few PFS1 scenarios, only some of which I'm aware of.
Rain says, “Oh! It’s such a cool story! There’s this place called Shadow Absalom, where a mercantile group called the Onyx Alliance had a massive vault of treasure! Aslynn wanted it all, and she almost got it, but some Society agents learned about her plot just in time! There’s more to it… but you’ll have to read the chronicle yourselves. I don’t want to spoil the story!” This refers to PFS2 Scenario #3-19: Mean Streets of Shadow Absalom; none of the current PCs could have played this higher-level adventure, and I have not played the scenario myself so I don't know what transpires.
Did they change the graphics for Zarta, she always looked to me like a femme fatale, constant manipulator, I am so disappointed that she was not present in PF2 more :(
Zarta's art has changed from PFS1, and I believe the art on Slide 3 and the cover art are both supposed to be Zarta, but look pretty different. So ... *shrug*
Sorting treasure? That's the mission? Rain doesn't trust society interns with these objects? So, hey, can we just split this stuff up and take it home to sort? I hear working from the home is popular lately!
Rain says, "Oh, no, what happens in Vault stays in Vault!"

Rain in Cloudy Day jots down a to-do list for the Pathfinders.
Area 1 (red highlight): Talking skull. Please talk to the skull. It doesn’t seem to like me. Maybe one of you will have better luck? Skill Check: Arcana, Diplomacy, Occultism, or Religion.
Area 2 (orange highlight): Pile of treasure. We probably shouldn’t leave everything in a pile like that, but we’ve been short-staffed. See what’s in there! Skill Check: Arcana, Crafting, or Perception.
Area 3 (yellow highlight): Assorted items. There’s all kinds of stuff up in the raised storage areas on the west wall and in the northeast corner. Did we find any magic potions in the vault? Alchemical items? Talismans? You bet we did! I know a healing potion when I see one, but some of this stuff is beyond my experience. See what you can find! Skill Check: Arcana, Crafting, or Perception
Area 4 (green highlight): Pile of empty chests. I already looked through these. If you find more empty chests, just pile them in the southwest corner of the vault.
Area 5 (light blue highlight): Danger! These shelves are way up high and piled high with dangerous poisons and possibly cursed items. I think Zarta felt it would be safer if they were out of reach, but we should make sure there’s nothing too dangerous up there. Skill Check: Acrobatics, Athletics, Medicine, Thievery, or Underworld Lore
Area 6 (dark blue highlight): Weapons. There are lots of magic weapons lying around. See if you can find the most powerful ones. Our field agents sure could use them! Skill Check: Arcana, Crafting, Gladiatorial Lore, or Warfare Lore
Area 7 (purple highlight): Scrolls and such. We sure did find lots of scrolls! Thought I saw some wands in there, too. Might be something useful for the Society’s spellcasters in there. Skill Check: Arcana, Nature, Occultism, or Religion
---
Please move your icon on Slide 5 to the area you'd like to visit first, and make one of the listed skill checks. Also, if anyone has any trouble seeing the colors, please let me know, and I'll either use different colors, or I'll put some kind of marker on the map.

Arfsnarf can't contain his excitement at the first option. He doesn't bother listening to the rest (for now).

Critical Success! The skull replies, "Information about myself? What could be more interesting than my life story? I have achieved immortality!"
She senses the confusion.
"Right, you probably think I'm an undead skull. But I'm not - I'm an all-powerful wizard who has found a way to transfer my consciousness into this object. I don't even know whose skull this is. I just know that this makes me the most powerful wizard on all of Ceti Alpha Five!"
She whispers so that only Zaza can hear.
"Keep me close, and I’ll prove it to you."

While the Pathfinders are searching through the piles of treasure, Rain in Cloudy Day walks around supervising. After roughly 10 minutes has elapsed, he meanders out of the vault, claiming he needs to use the restroom. Those who know about leshy physiology are skeptical of this claim, but let it slide.
“They’re not real! They can’t be real!” The panicked voice of Rain in Cloudy Day precedes his rapid footsteps as he races back into the vault.
“I can’t… I don’t… help! Please, help! They’re after me!” Rain collapses just inside the vault, clutching the sides of his head and whimpering in fear. A hideous snarl from just past the entryway causes Rain to go completely still.

How high are the balconies? Is it one action to jump the railing?
The balconies aren't a standardized height from the floor (and the floor is uneven anyway). The stairs go up 5' per square, so the platform you're currently on is 20' off the ground (4 squares of stairs to your east) and you'd take 15' worth of damage (-7 hp, see below) if you went straight south. However, the platform to your SSW is 25' but only a 20' drop to the floor (which is 5' off the ground where the platform is). I will rule that the handrails present no barrier to jumping off the balconies, just make the movement as if there were no railing.
When you fall more than 5 feet, you take bludgeoning damage equal to half the distance you fell when you land. Treat falls longer than 1,500 feet as though they were 1,500 feet (750 damage). If you take any damage from a fall, you land prone. You fall about 500 feet in the first round of falling and about 1,500 feet each round thereafter.

Rose smiles when the shadow in front of her perishes. She looks around and runs towards where Zaza is, she stops in front of her "Sorry, better shooting position" and reloads her pistol. Then she aims while closing one of her eyes and pulls the trigger
CLan Pistol@red (80 ft range makes it 2nd increment), level bump+mentor, 2nd increment: 1d20 + 8 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 8 + 2 - 2 = 11
Damage, p/b, level bump: 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 1 = 3
The bullet flies close to Isaku hitting the wall behind him! "Look out!"

Thanks, Snarlfist, for the height markers. And yes, stairs are difficult terrain heading upward.
Snarlfist tries to Demoralize Yellow, but as it is the stuff of nightmares itself, it is not easily scared. It just laughs maniacally as Snarlfist tries unsuccessfully to stab it.
Avery's owl flies up and begins pecking, but Avery's two arrows are enough to drop Blue. I am going to assume you Commanded an Animal first, since that would be the only way to get the Support benefit.
If you don't mind, I'm also switching Sophia's outline from orange to red - on the big map, it's hard to see orange.
Zaza fires a ray of frost, her increased confidence making the aim true. Would have missed without heroism!
Isaku formulates a plan to stab the creature - he jabs his blade effectively, and then rolls off the ledge gracefully.
Rose fires a warning shot into the ceiling.
Red runs back down the stairs, encountering a barking dog. Stride x3
Suspecting that Snarlfist has made a mental note of how high they are off the ground, Yellow tries to push Snarlfist off of the tower.
Shove (Athletics): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16 vs DC 18

Rose moves forwards, running from behind the corner, she reloads her pistol and aims over the dog. She breathes out and pulls the trigger.

Rose takes a perfect shot, the bullet hits the creature right in the head.

Isaku Beru

Seeing that Rose has the situation well in hand against Red, Isaku races across the vault floor to Snarlfist's aid. He reloads his dueling pistol.

Assuming Yellow is still alive after everyone takes a shot at it, does Isaku have LoS from where he is?

That makes more sense, I will note that arrangement of actions. And it is okay to change the color.
Avery's new prey is now Yellow, perched up on the winding platform of stairs. She whistles again for the owl to help her with her attacks as she darts bolts at Yellow with her shortbow.

Rose does the Cell Block Tango and fires a warning shot ... into the the bugbear's head. Rufu's bite finishes off Red.
Rufus has 1 more action, which I'll assume is a Stride (we can retcon).
Isaku, Zazu, and Arfsnarf all move in. Isaku, you have line of sight.
Avery shoots it twice, while Sophia pecks at its eyeballs. Persistent is rolled at the end of the target's turn.
Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 vs DC 20
Snarlfist's mask scares the nightmare creature (no small feat!), and he takes the opportunity to skewer it. It lives on, though. Red and Yellow are tougher.
The creature tries to push Snarlfist off the edge, again.
Dazzled: 1d20 ⇒ 13
Athletics, Frightened 2: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 9 - 2 = 20 vs DC 18
This time, it succeeds, causing Snarlfist to go over the edge. DC 15 Reflex to Grab an Edge (and need a Climb check to get back to the platform), or fall 25' (-12 hp bludgeoning).
Then, it hops over the railing, and tries to land on Arfsnarf. It will take -10 hp damage (down from -15 because it jumped intentionally), and Arfsnarf may take damage and/or be knocked prone, DC 15 Reflex to avoid.
It stands up to tower over Arfsnarf.
Persistent: 1d4 ⇒ 3
