Hey Jubal, what do you want in a completed submission? Also, do you have preferred ways to share their crunch with you? (For Pathfinder 1e games on Paizo, I usually put it in a profile, but for 5e I'm used to dndbeyond...but let us know if you have preferences.)

For now, here's my draft crunch for Argyri Katrakis, Half-Elven Swashbuckler Rogue.

Background:

Dignity is a fairly renowned poet and storyteller in Saltmarsh, she's liked by most but is also a bit of a recluse and is more often than not writing new and stranger poems which aren't as enjoyable as the ones she recites to make out enough coin to live.
Dignity formerly lived in a far away bustling, Metropolitan city where she for some time was renowned for her writings, all that changes when she starts having strange dreams and sanity shattering nightmares which influenced her writings.
At first the changes were subtle but eventually she was known for writing morbid, nonsensical and even blasphemous poems and short stories but even then she had some fans who supported her, or at least she had until the scandal...
One day Dignity received an anonymous gift, an ancient looking idol of a forgotten horror which entranced Dignity, that night she dreamed of impossible things, cyclopean cities beneath the waves, writing darkness that gnaws at the borders of reality and timeless entities that have existed before the dawn of times, older than the multiverse and likely to outlive it... It was too much for a mortal mind to process and so Dignity breaks down, insanity takes over and all that she has accomplished fell apart leaving only shame, a cruel irony given that she proudly boast her name Dignity.
She doesn't speak about that, and hopes to not be recognized and that her performance as a deranged lunatic which ruined her reputation will be forgotten.
How much time she was out? More an animal than a person, chanting praises to blasphemous things that shouldn't exist and babbling nonsense in imaginary tongues that defy explanation, of course once she fell from fame no one cared, some believe she finally lost her grasp on reality and embraced insanity, others that she was a fiend worshiper but most didn't really care, she was just another random and unremarkable writer among many.
Thanks to the all the good deities she one day awaken, that nightmare end and she recovered her former personality but she didn't emerged unchanged from the ordeal -which lasted about a year- Magic, weird magic now comes naturally at her not like that of a Bard but rather a Sorcerer but that wasn't compensation enough, her life, career and reputation ruined, with no other choice she gather as little as she had and left, she traveled and survived using her skills at performance and storytelling and from time to time her newfound Magic.
Her dreams however were still haunted and she can't quite resist them, resist the unexplainable pull towards the town of Saltmarsh, a backwater sure, a perfect place to start a new life far away from the big cities... But there's something else, something she can't quite figure out, at least not yet.
Dignity has lived in Saltmarsh for a couple of years by now, at first she was obviously distrusted for being a tiefling but as time passed people get used to her, at least most of them... Some believe she's actually a Witch who uses Enchantments to rule the minds of others when convenient, that rumor is of course false but is not without bases, more than a couple of times she has used her mind affecting Magic to get out of troubles incapacitating thieves or drunken sailors who see her as an easy prey.
Even today she sometimes can feel that unexplainable pull, a feeling of foreboding and dread that somehow calls for her to the ocean and beneath it's waves to a world forgotten by time and best left undisturbed less it's horrors become more than nightmares of a mad poet...

But also just read that I can't use sub races from outside the PHB x.x will need to change it to standard Tiefling

Mishima- Blacklock Human Monk Streetfighter

Ms. Bloodrive- Dignity Tiefling Aberrant Mind Sorcerer

Herkymr the Silly Klvuli Ujumbe- Human Barbarian
Gnomzerule- Badger the Rover Forest Gnome Revised Ranger
ElbowtotheFace- Some sort of lizar . . . What's a dragonborn?
Gyrfalcon- Rogue Swashbuckler

Question: can we use the TCoE optional rule to replace the ability scores granted by a race or subrace with whatever we want? I want to make an elf druid, and I think it might be interesting to make him actually be a high elf rather than a wood elf.

@Gyrfalcon. Thanks for asking. I prefer in a profile, so I'm one click away from the important stuff, like Backstory, AC, HP, saves, etc. Linking the DnDBeyond is fine to track your spells, features, equipment, etc.

@Arcee667. No TCE optional ability scores. Just PHB Races, please.

cheers

Presenting for appraisal Mithrandir Sylvenel, Wood Elf Spore Druid

Mechanics:

Mithrandir Sylvenel
Age: 512
Size: Medium (5 feet, 90 lb)
Languages: Common, Elven, Druidic

Race: Wood Elf
Racial Features:
-Darkvision:
-Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.
-Trance. Elves do not sleep. Instead they meditate deeply, remaining semi-conscious, for 4 hours a day. The Common word for this meditation is "trance." While meditating, you dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive after years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit a human would from 8 hours of sleep.
-Mask of the Wild. You can attempt to hide even when you are only lightly obscured by foliage, heavy rain, falling snow, mist, and other natural phenomena.

Background: Hermit
Background Features: Life of Seclusion, Discovery
-Personality Traits: I'm oblivious to etiquette and social expectations; I often get lost in my own thoughts and contemplation, becoming oblivious to my surroundings.
-Ideal: Greater Good. My gifts are meant to be shared with all, not used for my own benefit. (Good)
-Bond: I entered seclusion to hide from the ones who might still be hunting me. I must someday confront them.
-Flaw: I'd risk too much to uncover a lost bit of knowledge.

Class: Druid 1

Str 8 (-1) / Dex 16 (+3) / Con 12 (+1) / Int 14 (+2) / Wis 16 (+3) / Cha 8 (-1)

HP: 9
AC: 14 (leather armor)
Speed: 35 feet

Equipment: quarterstaff, wooden shield, leather armor, explorer's pack, druidic focus, scroll case, winter blanket, common clothes, herbalism kit, sling, 4 gp 9 sp

Proficiencies
Armor: Light armor, medium armor, shields (druids will not wear armor or use shields made of metal)
Weapons: Clubs, daggers, darts, javelins, maces, quarterstaffs, scimitars, sickles, slings, spears (from class); longsword, shortsword, shortbow, and longbow (from subrace)
Tools: Herbalism kit

Skills: Perception, Nature, Survival, Medicine, Religion

Cantrips Known: shillelagh, poison spray
Spells Prepared: absorb elements, cure wounds, detect poison and disease, purify food and drink

Backstory:
Centuries ago, Mithrandir Sylvenel was a respected member of a Silverstand wood elf clan. He was a skilled ranger, always at the head of any excursion into the Dreadwood. Some considered him brave for his willingness to venture into the monster-infested forest; others saw him as foolish. Over time, his kinsmen became disturbed by his growing obsession with the cursed place, the way it seemed to call to him and his eagerness to answer. When others would not follow him, he sometimes ventured in alone, and upon each return he seemed stranger, more distant, sometimes caught muttering intensely to himself.

One day, he delved deeper than he ever had before. The wind whistling from the mouth of a black, forbidding cave whispered to him, calling him down, down. His hunting party tried to reason with him, and finally abandoned him to his deranged whim. When he returned from the cave, a miasma of death seemed to cling to him. He seemed sickly, prone to violent coughing fits, but more than that, something behind his eyes was… wrong. His clansmen knew he had somehow become cursed or possessed, and they banished him to die in the Dreadwood, swearing to kill him if he ever attempted to leave.

Nobody expected Mithrandir to survive long on his own, especially in his weakened state. But he knew the Dreadwood better than anyone, and beyond that, he was not truly alone. Something had taken root inside him: the spores of a black fungus he had found in the heart of that cave. They grew inside him, granting him visions, whispering ancient secrets of the forest - dark, primal magic that predated even the elves.

He haunted those woods for centuries, rarely seen, becoming a legend used to scare children with. Despite it all, he never became bitter. He still cared for his clansmen, and even for the people beyond. The fungus’s visions showed him the strands beneath the surface, connecting all living things. He believed the knowledge it had to give him would someday serve a greater good. He did not yet understand it, but he knew he had accepted a harsh but vital destiny in the cave that day.

Months ago, he began receiving visions of a different kind: dreams haunted by an elven ghost, begging him to tear down the standing stones outside Saltmarsh. Dark magic had drawn bountiful fishing to the town, but in time would bring ruin. Forsaking the terms of his exile, Mithandril ventured out of the Dreadwood.

However, he found he did not have the strength to tear down the standing stones himself. He would need help. However, the filthy, diseased elf did not find himself or his ravings of doom particularly welcome anywhere in Saltmarsh. But despite being rejected and even beaten, he has remained persistent, and the townsfolk have begun to regard him as a familiar nuisance.

(Note that this is based on one of the options for the Hermit background in the Saltmarsh book - please let me know if it won't work!)

Ms. Bloodrive here

I created Dignity's profile but can't properly edit it from my phone x.x

This is Critzible, and here is my submission

This is Drusilla a High Elf Former Bladesinger Apprentice, turned 40 year fisher man after a mysterious incident left her bedridden for 5 years, with healing burns and her master mysteriously disappearing in an exploding flash of energy.

She formerly form a wealthy family and was gonna join a prestigious order of Elven Warrior Mages when she was bed ridden and then went out to become a fisher person.

Hi players

I would like to clarify my expectations about posting frequency in case it affects your submission. I want daily posts. Without that, I would like to advance if I’ve a majority of player posts after 48 hours.

Don’t get me wrong. Real life is more important than this game, so if you have anything that prevents you from posting I’ll understand. Just please tell us preferably before but sometimes afterwards an absence is the only time possible.

Posting frequency or game momentum is the lifeblood of PBP. I want to ensure we are all on the same page.

Cheers

I would be interested in submitting a character for this. First thought would be a half-elf lore college bard. With any luck, I'll have a submission complete and ready by tomorrow night.

I've been involved in quite a few PbPs, and I have to agree that momentum is one of the key ingredients. It is what separates games that last for several years and those that die out after a few weeks.

Seems a legitimate concern. I think a 48 hour window is good. And a group that can communicate about up coming abscesses is good too

I have seen it work to let players know or players let everyone else know when they have to be gone BEFORE the absence when possible. The flow of the game must have the continued push and motivation to stay going.

Hopefully there won't be any abcesses to deal with. :P

That posting rate and attitude about it sounds like what keeps games going.

@DM Jubal - Not that it matters a great deal at 1st level, but are you intending to use the alternate/additional features for the base classes as described in Tasha's?

The Magical Inspiration feature for 2nd level Bards is nice (or at least I think it is). Always good to have a bit more versatility for other class features, in this case Bardic Inspriation.

As an aside, here's the D&D Beyond Link to my submission, Vashrin Sarric, Bard

I'll start putting together a profile here, as per your preference above. I will post again with that alias when it is done. Thanks for the consideration.

Talomyr checking back in with the completed profile.

Hi Jubal. I am working on a wood elf outlander cleric to submit. Would Fharlanghn be an acceptable choice for deity (with the knowledge domain)?

For background, I'm thinking he was washed off a ship in the storm, and either washed up by Saltmarsh or was rescued by someone from Saltmarsh (if there's someone he could have a tie to). He took ending up at Saltmarsh as a sign from his god that there is need for him here, and so he's hanging around, doing odd jobs, looking for a sign as to what that could be.

@Talomyr. Yes. I think that TCE Magical Inspiration feature for 2nd level Bards is fine.

@markofbane. Yes to all: deity, domain, and background story. I'll give you a more specific person/connection after selection.

cheers

Some rule questions, as I plan out this warlock.

Lvl 2 Invocations
* Eldritch Armor - Prerequisite: Pact of the Blade feature - As an action, you can touch a suit of armor that isn’t being worn or carried by anyone and instantly don it, provided you aren’t wearing armor already. You are proficient with this suit of armor until it’s removed.
- Is this allowed?
- Tarn would have medium armor proficiency. Would this invocation allow him to wear heavy armor, as it says "you are proficient with this suit of armor until it is removed"?
- Shields are also listed as armor, but it isn't a "suit of armor." So, by RAW, he would be able to wear a suit of plate armor that he normally wouldn't be able to wear, but he wouldn't be able to use a shield that he normally wouldn't be able to use. Is this reading correct?

Lvl 3 Pact of the Blade
* You can use your action to create a pact weapon in your empty hand. You can choose the form that this melee weapon takes each time you create it (see the Weapons section for weapon options). You are proficient with it while you wield it. This weapon counts as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage. Your pact weapon disappears if it is more than 5 feet away from you for 1 minute or more. It also disappears if you use this feature again, if you dismiss the weapon (no action required), or if you die.
- Based on my reading of this, because it says "you can choose the form that this melee weapon takes" and "you are proficient with it while you wield it" that Tarn would be able to make any melee weapon, even one he isn't normally proficient with.

* You can transform one magic weapon into your pact weapon by performing a special ritual while you hold the weapon. You perform the ritual over the course of 1 hour, which can be done during a short rest. You can then dismiss the weapon, shunting it into an extradimensional space, and it appears whenever you create your pact weapon thereafter. You can’t affect an artifact or a sentient weapon in this way. The weapon ceases being your pact weapon if you die, if you perform the 1-hour ritual on a different weapon, or if you use a 1-hour ritual to break your bond to it. The weapon appears at your feet if it is in the extradimensional space when the bond breaks.
- This does not say that he is proficient with it just because it is a pact weapon.

- So based on my reading of this: At lvl 3, Tarn could use his Pact of the Blade to create a Maul (2d6 dmg, heavy, two-handed) and can use it even though he normally isn't proficient with mauls.
- Also...I like the idea of him using a mining pick as he is a miner by trade. But he isn't proficient in warpicks, and warpicks are just...horrible. I don't even know why they were made. As it says that he can choose the form it takes, could he make a 2d6 dmg, heavy, two-handed weapon that does piercing damage? Given that there are already slashing and bludgeoning options, it would just mean having a two-handed pick that he creates.
- However, if (based on my reading) if he finds a magical maul and makes it into his pact weapon, he doesn't gain proficiency with it. Which is the trade-off from making his own weapon vs binding himself to an existing one. Right?

----------------

I really like the idea of the melee warlock using his abilities to instantly wear armor and to summon weapons. But before I go out making assumptions, I'd like to know if my reading is correct.

@Tarn. 1. Eldritch Armor is not in a official book yet, so you can ignore it.

2. To explain Pact Weapon. Google sage advice 5e pact weapon. Should find an article from April 2016 which explains.

There are also guides for blade pact warlocks for recommendations too.

Cheers

Thanks for the answers! I changed the build plan for the lvl2 invocation (sticking with medium armor) and now know the answer for pact weapons.

I'll be closing recruitment tomorrow. Please let me know when your submissions are complete for me to do a final review. I would to select on Sunday and start Discussion.

cheers

Tarn is complete. Did some rework of his stats and build path but it is all ready to go now.

Also, I envision here as red skinned but cannot found a befitting profile pic x.x

At the moment I don't have any specific path or build for leveling up, just straight sorcerer and perhaps grab the Metamagic adept feat once I've maxed CHA

I would like to apply with a character who started a Saltmarsh game but never got past the house. Just retooling him for 5th edition but the background is done. A cleric of St. Cuthbert

DM Jubal wrote:
A swim speed will make a big deal in the game

I was thinking it might be helpful to brainstorm some of the ways to get a swim speed at low levels (<5). Ignoring magic items, there are very few:

3rd level--Alter Self spell
4th level--Wild shape druid

So (unless you want to restrict yourself to an aquatic weapon) a better tactic early on is probably to gain advantage, thus negating the disadvantage underwater combat imposes. Even at first level there are many options, the simplest of which is perhaps the Help action.

Another sort of scary thing is suffocating. There is a subtlety in the rules which is probably pretty unlikely, but check it out:

Quote:

A creature can hold its breath for a number of minutes equal to 1 + its Constitution modifier (minimum of 30 seconds).

When a creature runs out of breath or is choking, it can survive for a number of rounds equal to its Constitution modifier (minimum of 1 round). At the start of its next turn, it drops to 0 hit points and is dying, and it can't regain hit points or be stabilized until it can breathe again.

So a dying player (rolling death saves) must be moved to air before it can even be stabilized! I've never seen that situation in play but sounds rather intense. :)

I would be interested in tossing my hat in with Garrett, a Halfling Warlock. I don't have the book so I went with a general story that could be applied more to Saltmarsh later.

I am ready to go. I went a little light on history, leaning on the idea that being a ranger and follower of Baervan Wildwanderer was playing strong to trope. Imagine Strider but an ornery gnome.

Good luck all.

Here's the D&D Beyond Link to my submission, Vashrin Sarric, Bard

Backstory and Other Details:

Stories...it was always the stories that grabbed young Vashrin's attention. Growing up, Vashrin spent a majority of his time in the inn his mother worked in. He spent the nights of his childhood years listening to boastful stories of traveling adventurers and fanciful tales told by the bards who would frequent the Grand Griffon Inn in Gradsul. Once he was old enough to do so, he would often sneak off to the Grand Library so that he could slake his curiosity and desire for more stories, thumbing through the accounts - both fictional and true - that laid within its venerable walls.
This is how life went for Vashrin for years, but eventually hearing and reading the stories wasn't enough for the young half-elf, he sought to learn new stories in new lands, and if the fates were kind, perhaps he'd even be the subject of a few in the future. This growing wanderlust eventually grew too great in Vashrin's heart and he bid his mother and Gradsul farewell. He was off to see the world outside of Gradsul and as blind fate would have it, his first stop was the small fishing village of Saltmarsh.

Faith: Olidammara

Personality Traits: There’s nothing I like more than a good mystery/story.

Ideals: Knowledge. The path to power and self-improvement is through knowledge. (Neutral)

Bonds: I’ve been searching my whole life for a great story, or preferably to be in one.

Flaws: I overlook obvious solutions in favor of complicated ones. "You don't understand, it's simply more interesting this way...think of the readers!"

Height: 5' 10"
Weight: 167 lbs
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Green
Skin Tone: Fair
Age: 24

You see before you a youngish, half-elven man with shoulder length blond hair and piercing green eyes. A crooked grin is on his face that blossoms into a wide smile as he hears or tells a good story. In the Inn at night, he is wearing the flashy, trademark clothing of a bard. Otherwise, you are more likely to see him in a simple tunic and breeches or possibly a set of well-worn leather armor.
