Campaign Start Date: 25th Gozreh, 4717 AR

It was just this morning, after six weeks at sea, that the sailor on watch sighted land. Over the next several hours, most of the colonists have been on deck watching the southwestern coast of the island of Ancorato slowly pass by, or else gawking at other fog-shrouded island peaks in the distance. Now in early afternoon, the fog has burned off, and the Peregrine has pulled into a crescent-shaped bay lined with a white sand beach. As a gentle breeze flows over the ocean toward the trees above the beach, the starboard gunwales are lined with colonists, looking expectantly toward a line of small buildings on a short bluff above the beach.

After looking through a spyglass handed to her by Captain Markosi, Ramona wends her way through the crowd, tapping each of you on the shoulder and asking, ”Can I have you head over there for a moment?” pointing to an aft portion of the port maindeck, away from the rest of the colonists. Once you’ve all headed over, she approaches you, a poorly-concealed look of worry on her face. “We have a problem,” Ramona says bluntly. She offers the spyglass to the party and explains, “Something is wrong. Nobody’s in sight. There’s no smoke from cook fires or the smithy. Some of the buildings look burned out.” Ramona continues, her voice low. “Sailors can’t keep their mouths shut. Soon all the other colonists are going to hear about this—if they can’t see for themselves already—and things could become… tense. I would like for the five of you to take the ship’s boat, row to shore, and see what’s going on…or what happened. Once you’re ashore, I’ll have Captain Markosi take the ship to the secondary landing site up the coast,” she gestures northwards, ”and you meet us there after checking out the colony. We’ll decide what to do then.”

The short gnome adjusted his fine top hat, barely holding back his shock of wildly blue green colored hair. He stood up on tippy toes to try and get a better look at what the Captain and the Leader were glancing at. When he spoke, it was in the fast stoccato style for which gnomes were known all over the world.

"What's that, you say? No sign of the others? Now I knowUncle Nininox Ambershale, XII wouldn't have just abandoned the site. Well, maybe he would have, since he is generally quite worthless and wouldn't appreciate the opportunity he'd been given, but that's neither here nor there, is it? I’m not good at rowing, but I’d like to accompany the group to look for signs of him, I mean them,” he states to no one in particular as he takes a breath.

During his introductions to the group, he had told the others they could call him Nox or 14, either one, for ease.

Nox nodded at his first assignment, after his weeks long boat ride. It was time to show the others he belonged, and put his many hours of study of this land to good use.

Cheliax attack? I hope not.

The big man takes a look through the spyglass. He lowers it, shakes his head, and hands it to the next in line.

Brother MacLaren's normally friendly disposition sours. "Trouble."

Then he brightens a bit. "Well, if there is trouble, at least you have us to look into it!"

He looks around at his comrades.
The other big man, Alexandr, carries a gigantic axe in the same style as Brother MacLaren, but unlike the priest has the skill as well as the strength to wield it. Though why did they give a slot to an Irriseni?
The gnome seems excitable, but then, most of them have to be, to stave off the Bleaching.
He is not yet sure what to make of the woman, although her interest in alchemy is not too dissimilar from his interest in brewing.
And the Tien man is something of a mystery to him - as with Alexandr, the Company's selection of a foreigner for this Colony is intriguing. Maybe they hope to foster trade with his land.

Already wearing his Breastplate, Alexandr considers the situation.
In a lowered voice, adressing the other PCs and Ramona he asks.
In terms of a mission statement, we are to investigate the colony, deliver what aid to possible surivors we can, identify and if possible eliminate immidiate threats, assess what colonial assets are of use for our future endeavours, and then rendesvous with you at the landing site to the north. Is this summation correct Lady Ramona?

He continues:
If threats are sentient, I have a sap as a non lethal option, bringing in prisoners for information is useful in such situations. I consider myself to be reasonably proficient and at rapport based means of interrogation, as long as a common language exists.

Adressing the group with a slight smirk he says
As you can probably guess from the "totally not overcompensation" Axe I have, I am mostly a mellee combatant. I have an unusual degree of skill in riverrine and aquatic combat on account of some of my ancestors apparently having gotten frisky with a Rusalka, and can thus also see in the dark about as well as an Elf or Looking at Nox 14, a Gnome.

Finishing he says:
For currently a minute per day, I can enchance my or someone elses swimming capabilities to be about as good as my capabilities for moving on solid ground. It is akin to a spell like ability, and I would use this on myself should be find ourselfs under attack while in transit to the colony, unless one of you forsees massive issues for him or herself in terms of not drowning. I am quite strong but not particulary perceptive, and would be using the paddles to leave scouting, including at threats below the waterline, to my more perceptive comrades.

'Mission statement'? So formal.

"Uh, yeah.... I guess I can also hit things. I swim okay. And I can call upon the blessings of Cayden Cailean. Who generally assures me that if I have a good heart and a good deal of courage, things will work out."

He starts donning his scale armor.

To strengthen Antwins grip, he has him hold his massive Orc butchering axe one handed for considerable amounts of time.

--He is interested in establishing a professional relationship with Lady Ramona, while he also has a reasonable singing voice, he would be more focused on supporting her in terms of leadership, while taking care to not possibly ursurp her position.

He lets drop that his Orc Butchering axe has been named "Overcompensation" by one of his seargents, who got to name Aleksandr's nearly aquired trophy weapon as a personal additional reward for good leadership in battle. Aleksandr has a fairly pronounced streak of self irony.

To Brother McLaren,

By now, most of the colonists probably recognize the Tien man, Li Shin. He prefers to go by "Shin"--for those who inquire or are familiar, Shin is his given name. He obviously stood out among the ship, though it was notably a diverse crew. Perhaps a deliberate choice by the Bountiful Venture Company that worked to his benefit. On occasion, Shin can be seen talking to the only other Tien on the ship, Ylatina Xo, who loves to share stories about her native Minkai with many on the ship. He also is seen on occasion sharing drinks with a young nobleman, who some may know as Harcourt Carrolby.

Shin offered his services to the sailing crew. And while he was not familiar with Andoran sailing protocols, he was passable at helping out. Still, he was notably ill at ease during the trip, often scanning the horizon and never leaving his weapons far from his grasp. Shin finds the sight of land reassuring--until he is pulled aside and hears the news.

"Thank you. It is an honor to be of service, Ramona." He looks at the team selected. Looked like a hearty lot, armed and capable of fighting. Except the gnome. Why was he selected? "Respectfully, though, are you certain that Nox here should come with us? It's possible that the colony has been attacked by a raiding crew. The area may be dangerous--better for his sake that he remain safely on board."

And I don't want to have to protect this little man, thinks Shin. He doesn't voice this thought, though perhaps it was obvious.

Hmmm Alexandr says.
My experience is that arcane capabilities, which I believe Mr. Nox-14 posseses, are often a highly valuable force multiplier, especially if backed up by clerical capabilities that can confidently stand in the front line Alexandr gives and approving nod to Brother McLaren,
2 hard to predict combatants
meaning himself and Anastasia in this further complemented by a dextrous front line reconaissance specialist? He finishes looking at Li Shin.

Alexandr gets into the boat grabbing 2 paddles and waits for the rest of the party.

The earlier we get this done the better, we need a base of supplies, fresh water, vitamins and a bunch of other things we can only find on land in appropriate numbers. Besides, I cant wait to stretch my land legs. A moment later he thinks S&#!, I am leading again? Maybe? I wouldnt actually mind if someone else does.

Brother MacLaren waves his hand over his tankard and mutters a brief prayer to the Lucky Drunk. The tankard fills with ale.

"To Andoran!"

"What is military about force multiplier? Booze for example is a force multiplier for a lot of things, as you undoubtedly know."
Aleksandr answers chucklingly.

"On the topic of booze, there is some pretty decent Irriseni Vodka in my cabin, we can definitly pop one after exploring the colony."

To Brother McLarens toast he answers, lifting an imaginary glass:

"To freedom and victory"

@GM I retroactively spend some of my remaining cash on Vodka that is in Aleksandrs stash in his Cabin. Former RussianIrriseni military with no booze reservoirs would be completely out of character, I hope you dont mind.

"Dextr--what?" says Shin, finding Alexandr's jargon hard to follow. "I'm an explorer. I've been to many places in Garund and Avistan. Once I was a soldier, but I left that life years ago."

His attention turns to Brother MacLaren. "Did your god just give you a pintful of ale?" Shin is incredulous--he's not sure whether he should be impressed or worried, but he decides to roll with it. "I think that makes you the most talented bartender in all of Azlant! I will some of your God-ale tonight, when we celebrate our successful landing."

He then looks at Nox. "Are you a mage, then, as Alexandr says?" he asks? "Do you have magics that would work in a fight?"

”More importantly, I possess knowledge, which is probably more important than any thing else out here. That, and I can read a bunch of different languages and such. It’d be a shame for you to find something interesting written down over there and not have a way to parse it. You’d have to come back and get me anyway. Anastasia is quick to look over her shoulder, responding instantly to the touch. She scooped up her pack and armor in either hand and carried them at her side. Her tabard flapped in the breeze as she easily paced Ramona to where they would meet. Setting her burdens down she stood slightly apart from the others, bare arms crossed while she paid attention with interest.

"I hope whatever caused this isn't lingering close by." Ana said, but there was no concern in her tone. As Ramona finished she wrung her hands out on the front of her tabard, then peeled it up her torso and off. Tossing it over her pack she started to shrug on her leather armor. Once the straps to the lamellar were set Ana pulled her tabard back on.

The dark haired woman cast a side eye to Alexandr as he took point on assuming a leadership role, but made a bitter face and took out her spear and shield from the back of her pack. Strapping the shield to her back she then took up her warhammer. Hefting the awkward weight she spared an irritable look at the hourglass shaped head and belted it off at her hip. Finally armed she hefted her pack in one hand and made her way to the waiting boat.

Coming up behind MacLaren, she gave him a poke in the back of the knee with the butt of her spear as she held it up straight. "Best not to get tipsy brother." she cautioned, but her features remained placid enough it was questionable if her heart was in the warning.

Setting her pack down next to the center seat Ana then pointedly sits in the rowing position. As Shin and Nox share a bit of casual conversation she favors the two with a light smile before looking back in the direction of the shore.

"Are you of noble blood? I confess I don't recognize your tabard," says Shin to Anastasia as she prepares herself for battle. The truth was that he wouldn't recognize anyone's tabards--unless they happened to be Tien.

He shifts with slight unease at having to look up at the very tall woman, feeling surprisingly small. He decides instead to divert his eyes downward, at the magical gnome. "So if your uncle is Nox-12, and you're Nox-14, then who's Nox-13?"

Assuming there are oars remaining, Shin will also take a position to row. But he won't fight the others over it.

"Just a half-pint at a time at this point. Some of the really devout can conjure a half-gallon at once. It's pretty simple ale, but I also brew the conventional way which allows me some more creativity - as well as more potent brews. I'm looking forward to seeing what the fruits of this land allow.

I can also conjure wine or fresh water - water in much larger quantities. Fresh water should not be a problem for the Colony, as I imagine the other priests can do likewise."

Brother MacLaren nods his head towards Alexandr and rolls his eyes. He clearly shares Ana's annoyance at the man trying to take charge.

Nox pulls out a mug from his satchel. ”Don’t mind if I do. A little lubrication for the mind keeps it from getting too creaky, you know.”. He accepts the conjured ale and takes a long pull.

He then takes a serious look at Li Shin. ”Im sorry, but we don’t talk of 13. He’s our family’s shame. Maybe when I know you better and am much deeper in my cups, we might talk about it. Stupid 13…,” he trails off, staring out over the water.

As the conversation drifts towards Family shame, Aleksandr considers his own exiled situation.

Hmm, I wonder if my family will talk about me like that. You know, Alexandr the once proud son of Irrisen who shamefully resigned his commission after winning a battle and fled to Andoran? If they know what is good for them, and they certainly do because they arent idiots, then they definitly will, quite publically too.
On the other hand, Andoran military intelligence has been surprisingly courteous, professional and wellcoming, while also being rather eager to shove him off to Azlant, mostly be recommending him to the Andoran company organising the expedition.
Perhaps we have a "friend" in common.
Now, why do think that I hear distant feminine laughter in my head right now?

He would start paddling towards the cost as soon as the rest of the party is ready, and securely in the boat, but is in no rush otherwise and is as a matter of fact completely happy if someone else wishes to take the lead.

Regarded Shin's question with caution, eying him briefly before she answered. "I am no noble." she stated simply before adding, "Just of fine pedigree."

She couldn't help a laugh at Brother MacLaren's reasoning. "A unique perspective of your clergy I suppose." she admitted. She favored the cleric with a soft look before turning her attention to Alexandr again.

Shin nods in response to Anastasia's claim to a fine pedigree. "In many parts of Tian, the kings and nobles are served by bureaucrats--wise and learned folk who come from every station and who earn their place by merit, not birth. It is a more civilized way of running a nation. I admire that Andorans also believe in meritocracy, even if their approach is quite different."

Alexandr:

No problem with retroactive booze.

As you all get into the boat and crewmen lower you into the ocean, a slight breeze picks up, whipping up the water's surface into a field of whitecaps as you work the boat's four oars. Underneath the low bluff the colony of Talmandor's Bounty is built on is the beach, with a short and simply-built dock connected by a sandy pathway up the bluffside to a gate in a half-finished palisade made of sturdy logs.

Perception DC 32:

As you cross the halfway mark between the ship and the coast, you notice the tentacles of some aquatic creature disappear underneath the boat.

Ana rowed easily in measured and powerful strokes, working the boat through the wind whipped waves as patiently as she could. "Weather fairs well enough for the moment." she noted. Finding her stride as they hit the halfway point she looked to Shin when not glancing over her shoulder to the shore.

"Every society has it's strengths and weaknesses." she dryly reasoned, "Andoran generally rewards you for work and insight. The former more than the latter, to the chagrin of those with more marketable skills than chopping a tree."

Mostly because perception 1 is fun to roleplay.

Whatever it is, Alexandr has no idea it exists, let alone it is there.
Having one oar, he minds Shin's advice and settles into a Rhytm based on Anastasias.

We are reasonably close to the shore, as such, the most dire oceanic predators should be elsewhere. Right?
Says Alexandr, probably hearing feminine laughter in his head as he does so.
Perhaps I should branch into perform comedy for additional boons. He thinks, oblivious to any actual danger.

As the party crosses the halfway point between the Peregrine and the shoreline, the water is breached by two Small creatures that look something like goblins other than their tentacles-for-legs and rubbery blue skin. Initiative: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
As the goblin-octopi attack, Shin stands there in complete shock!

Yep, I think the GM rolling initiatives for the group would greatly streamline the initiative process.

Rhade casts Acid Splash and tries to target the closest creature.

RTA 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Damage 1d3 ⇒ 2

I would agree with that.

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Brother MacLaren is startled and wonders if his conjured ale is giving him hallucinations. Octopus-goblins??

I had a thought to do that myself. I won't roll for the other party members this time, but I will roll for everyone in the future.

I am explicitly fine with you rolling both initiatives and attacks of opportunity GM

Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

Free action, drop paddle (into the boat),
Move action draw Orc Butchering Axe, attacking the goblinoctopus with it (not power attacking).

attack Orc butchering axe: 1d20 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 1 + 4 = 10
damage: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 6, 4) + 6 = 18

Partly warned by the femine laughter in his head, Aleksandr dodges out of the short spears reach.
Having little idea what attacks him, Aleksandr drops his paddle , and quickly draws his massive axe, striking a blow that was party off balance and likely goes far wide.

Kind of doubt a 10 hits

Сука Блядь

Irriseni:
F+!! (not a direct translation but reasonable close)

he swears in his native language.

Having no idea if the tentacles means they could be some type of Qlippoths-related things, and thus highly dangerous, he tries swearing at them in Abyssal to see if this gets a reaction. And also because swearing in Abyssal is good for stress relief.

Ich habe dich verfehlt Wurm, aber ich muss dich nur einmal treffen!

Abyssal:
I may have missed you worm, but I only have to hit you once!

Female Human (Alchemically Enhanced) Alchemist (Ragechemist) / Barbarian (Armored Hulk) 1

Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

As the goblin creatures leap from the water their clumsy strikes first shock Ana and Alexandr, but as she leans back to dodge she scowls and lets the oar go. Her hand slips down to the front pocket of her tabard, slender fingers slipping through her brass knuckles. Then she stands up in the boat, curling her arm at belt level.

Brass Knuckles: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 131d3 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

She then throws her arm up and forward, twisting at the hip as she tries to bring her knuckles into the fowl attacker's face.

Initiative Order:
Nox - 22
Alexandr - 21
Anastasia - 21
Unidentified Monsters - 19
Shin - 11
MacLaren - 6

The boat is an unstable battle platform. All attacks made while sitting in the boat take a -2 penalty. Standing up can be done with a move action and a DC 10 Acrobatics check, and negates the -2 penalty. Each attack you make while standing, however, requires an additional Acrobatics check at the same DC. If you fail an Acrobatics check (or otherwise fall), you have to make a DC 10 Reflex saving throw or fall into the drink.

The appearance of these "Octo-Goblins" throws the previously tranquil boat into a frenzy of wild activity, thus far to no effect. Cries of alarm drift across the water to add to the din of blade, spell, and fist. The foul creatures renew their assault on the Irriseni and the alchemist, but the sudden rocking of the boat foils their second attempt.

Attack on Alexandr: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Attack on Anastasia: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Shin and Brother MacLaren are up, then we're back to Nox.

M Human Cleric 5/Brk3 | HP 59/59 | AC 23 (T 15, FF 19, CMD 24) | F +12 R +11 W +12 | Mv 30' | Init +3 | Per +13 Spells 4/6/5/5/3 | Channel 3d6 4/4 | Agile Feet 6/6 | Active: Heroism, Haste, Delay Poison, Outflank, IC +3

A -2 on attacks and no penalty on damage or AC for attacking while sitting sounds incredibly lenient, actually. Can't imagine generating nearly as much power on a swing without stepping into it, nor being able to dodge well. But I guess Prone has no damage penalty either.

"Let's do this, then!"

Brother MacLaren stands and draws his sword and tankard.
Acrobatics, ACP: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 2 - 4 = 2

Reflex DC 10: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

The boat rocks, but he is able to catch himself.

"Hey, keep it steady..." he starts to say, before trailing off as he realizes that all of the rowers are fighting now.

Male Duskwalker U. Monk (Flowing Monk) | Shaman 8

I assume that Shin is standing but unarmed given that he was playing lookout.

Shin quickly draws his glaive and swings it at the creature attacking Anastasia.
Glaive, power attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9; Damage: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
He misses badly, but at least he doesn't fall into the sea.

@GM Can you correct me if I am wrong ruleswise concerning this course of action for my next round?
-Free action: Bloodrage.
-5 Foot step out of the boat into water next to the octogob trying to stab me
-Do a DC10 swim check (calm sea) at an effective +6 to swim (8 base, -4 from ACP, +2 effective STR from bloodrage) in order to avoid penalties for not yet having a swim speed
-Try to Hit Goblin with big butchering axe at no penalties (assuming I didnt fail the swim check) because of aquatic bloodline.
Also, does initiative order have to be rigidly obeyed between the party members? Like, do me and Ana currently have to wait for Nox's turn or can we do our actions because we still go before the monsters do. There are pros and cons to both approaches.

@Alexandr That action economy of that is correct, and as per the rules for underwater combat (link), you would be effectively flat-footed and flanked if you fail that Swim check. You would even still have a move action in that scenario. Sadly, moving out of the boat won't reduce the penalties for others attacking while sitting down in it.

What about the initiative order question?

I see that now. I'm going to say not strictly. My plan is to "update" the combat scene at each enemy initiative slot, so everyone who goes before the "octogobs" (Nox, you, and Ana) can all post, then I'll post their actions and an update on the battlefield.

Been a while since I last invaded someone other species natural habitat.
Aleksandr says as his eyes turn pitch black and his incisors grow to pronoucned fangs. He jumps directly at the octogob which tried to stab him twice.

Free action Rage, 4/5 left.
5 foot step off the boat next to the goblin that attacked him twice
DC 10 Swim check, attack with no power attack.

Swim DC10: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Butchering Axe Rage: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

Nox’s eyes go wide as he sees the first octogoblin go away in a cloud of blood and viscera after being cleaved by that axe. ”Dont make that fella mad,” he adds, staring at his now swimming compatriot.

The little gnome again fires an acid splash as the other one.

"Stay in the boat!" Ana shouted in surprise, "There may be more in the water!" She growled in frustration as she stood, trying to draw her shield across her other arm but abandoning it as she could not manage both.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15

Unsteady on her feet a moment, she widened her stance and grit her teeth. Her core muscles tightened and she reached out toward the goblin at the side to steady herself. Then she pivoted at her hips and thrust her dominant arm out in a punch aimed right between it's ugly eyes.

"Did you see his face? Alexandr looked like a sea monster himself! I think he's okay in the water."

Though there is a tense moment of waiting for a second assault, Alexandr's swing and Ana's punch connect, leaving bubbles and a good deal of blood as all the evidence the creatures even attacked in the first place. A sudden yelling then rings out, and our heroes turn to see the colonists cheering their victory.
