About Li Shin

Background:
The eldest son of a town magistrate in the land of Po Li, Li Shin was raised to understand the virtues of honor, courage, and filial piety. As a child, he received an education in the classics, poetry, and history. While he did his best as a student, he knew he was unlikely to succeed following his father's footsteps as a civil servant. Where he found purpose was in the martial arts. Under the tutelage of Liu Yong, he learned to call upon his inner qi in battle, moving and striking with strength, speed, and grace. So when it came time for Shin to make a name for himself, he found his place as an officer in the Imperial Army. And he volunteered for a dangerous but potentially rewarding adventure--as a fighter aboard one of the Eternal Emperor's treasure ships, sailing to Garund for exploration and trade.

What was intended a quest for glory would end in disgrace, as his ship was taken by pirates. Many of his soldiers fought to the death. Shin yielded, and was conscripted. It was two years before Shin learned Osiriani and earned enough trust that he could escape. But by then, the damage was done. To surrender to the pirates was bad; to become one was an unforgivable dishonor. Home was no longer an option for Shin.

At first, Shin's wanderings were a form of meditation. With no home and no purpose other than survival, Shin traveled to escape his past and to test his abilities. But these travels would eventually morph into something more. Shin began to chronicle his journey as he traveled to places that few Tien had ever seen before. It was hardly clear who would read this chronicle. But Shin dreamed that perhaps, after he died, his chronicle would live on beyond him and find its way back home. Perhaps it would be a redemption of his dishonor.

Now, having explored lands in both Garund and Avistan, Shin set his sights on something even more spectacular--the lands of Arcadia. Shin was anxious about embarking on another long ocean journey, but the reward was clear--to explore places that no known Tien had ever touched!

Appearance and Personality:

Shin has typical Tian features and sports shoulder-length hair, usually tied back when not sleeping. He is fit and toned, but not overly muscular, and is a shade shorter than average.

Shin is jovial with his friends but unforgiving of his enemies. He typically trains in the morning and relaxes in the evening, often using the time to jot notes or develop the chronicles of his journeys. He is prone to excess, whether in extravagant displays or in drink, though he complains that the alcohol of the west cannot compare to rice wine. As a product of his education, he likes to spout poems and proverbs, though he is not nearly as insightful as he thinks. Shin is quite sure of the superiority of the Tien race and his own talents--a fact that leads him to recklessly get in over his head. He is quick to anger and slow to forgive perceived sleights--if his honor is challenged, he will demand the issue be settled through martial combat.
