Matsu Niko |

Honestly, I would not mind roleplaying an intermission, or if not go on to the next thing. I like playing Matsu Niko but we need to move the game forward.
What I mean is, you post "Both of you pass. Those a good rolls, and Hida Tetsumaru has the best score." which is fine. I would have liked to get some roleplaying opportunity or you could just introduce the next event.
When I run games on pbp, I always try to post something that leads to posts by the players to keep them engaged.

Kakita Kiyoko |

Technically, I’m still around, but I’m quite happy to drop. This isn’t a very engaging game.

Mirumoto Dai |

Greetings, so should I take part in the rest of the tournament or is the Go the final part?

Mirumoto Dai |

Ok, so should I participate knowing that its highly improbable to win anything or just keep an eye out for when I can do the social non-tournament parts.

Mirumoto Dai |

I hope so.

I owe you all my apologies.
I manage IT support for a military medical facility. At the end of January, we swapped from our old electronic health record to a newer, commercial product. The tail end of our 8 months of preparations consumed more time than I expected, and I suddenly disappeared. Once we reached the point I could look up again, my wife was sick. Then I was sick.
Then, after another couple of weeks, I realized I hadn't even touched my computer at home for months, nor visited these forums and games on my phone.
I didn't intentionally abandon anyone, nor ignore the private messages that I see in my inbox, but I certainly understand that it feels like I abandoned you.
I assume after that much absence, that you have dropped my character and moved on. I do not blame you. That's on me.

You are still welcome to play, but of course, real life comes first.

Will the tournament be moving on soon?

Isawa Asao |

2 things:
1: Roleplay. Honestly, I have felt like it was being discouraged (intentionally or not), and stopped trying.
2: Howdy!
I, my wife, our daughter, and her two toddler children are about to climb into a minivan and start driving around the country. We leave Monday (25 April) morning and don't plan to return home until the evening of 24 May.
Yes, I expect to get very tired of being in a confined space with two trapped toddlers.
We're going to spend a week with as much family as we could convince to gather for my parent's 60th wedding anniversary, then we're going to spend a week with our 2nd child and his family (who can't join the celebration), and 13 days on the road getting from point to point.
I will have my cell phone and should be able to keep posting. I should even have an overabundance of time to post while on the road, and expect to have ample opportunity while visiting our son. Not sure so much about the "week" at the large gathering (30 April through 8 May), but I expect to have time. Biggest problem will be how much I hate trying to type on the phone's tiny little virtual keyboard.
If it appears I am unintentionally slowing the game down while on the road, do what you need to do to keep things moving. If my character is active and actively WORKING to slow things down, it should have nothing to do with the trip, so . . ..

Isawa Asao |

Home. My computer died while we were gone. Boot SSD isn't recognized anymore . . .. System is probably 6 years old at this point. Well behind the tech curve. Ordered something current to replace it. Feeling very fortunate to be ABLE to do so, honestly.
On my wife's computer, and will be stealing time on it to handle the online games until the new computer in place and operational.
Had a really good time visiting with my family. Very glad we took the trip.

Mirumoto Dai |

Welcome back.

Isawa Asao |

Okay, pulled my book out and started looking through the material again . . ..
IN the 49~51 page range it suggests that many non-standard duels using the same weapon/skill are possible, noting both archery and spellcasting options. It also noted that some could be straight simple combat instead fo more formal like an iaijutsu duel.
Assuming we want to go with something other than simple combat, let's look at the Iaijutsu dueling rules and see what we can cobble together.
Assessment - I would argue that each would need to use the weapon skill of their opponent for this roll, as they are trying to understand the opponent's capabilities. The Isawa would need to roll Iaijutsu, while the Bayushi would need to roll War Fan. [uncontested Weapon Skill [Assessment]/Awareness, though beating your opponent's roll by at least 10 earns +1K1 on the Focus roll - Learn info from page 87]
Focus - the opponents begin looking at the other for weaknesses before attempting a strike. A case could be made for either using the opponent's weapon skill or their own, though I imagine using their own would make for a better contest. [contested Weapon Skill [Focus]/Void, win by 5 for first strike, with each additional 5 granting a Free Rise on the strike]
Strike - Each would make the roll using their own weapon skill. [normal weapon skill (iaijutsu instead of kenjutsu) vs normal defense TN of opponent]
Oh, yeah. Defense TN! Armored or unarmored? Would it be considered appropriate for bushi to wear armor when facing shugenja for this test? Obviously, I think the most fair display of skill requires everyone to go without armor, but Rokugan is rarely fair.
The above is the simplest modification I can see for using the formal dueling rules with a mixed weapon environment.

Isawa Asao |

If I allow armor for Sugai, then you can use your prayers.
Would only work if I pre-cast as we took positions for the formal duel, and then things would seriously NOT be fair.
Formal duels require one die roll per three combat rounds. I could cast an extended Reversal of Fortunes (5K3 vs TN 5 base) to get to roll all 3 dueling rolls twice, taking the better roll.
I was already considering using Drawing the Void between rounds (assuming I win) to recover Void without needing the time to meditate.
The player expects the rules to be formal dueling as a display of martial prowess. Not fair to my character in the least, but Rokugan is built around the supremacy of the Samurai caste in general, and the martial Samurai above all others.

Yes, that's true. We better modify the dueling rules. I'll read up on them and see where they can be modified. Shugenja are different from Samurai in Rokugan on many respects.

Isawa Asao |

What I posted above on Sunday was an attempt to tweak the rules to deal with weapons other than katana in an iajtsu-style duel.

Isawa Asao |

1. Not familiar with a dodge mechanic in L5R. Full defense is a stance. Can get a TN defense bonus a couple of ways, but not commonly at this point in a career.
2. Dodging is not part.of the Iaijutsu mechanic we are using. It would amount to a forfeit during a formal duel, as I understand things.

Mirumoto Dai |

Sounds good.

Isawa Asao |

To all present, greetings!
Let it be known that the player associated with this character will be out of pocket for six days. During this period, he will be attending a work conference and will be limited to his cell phone for access to the forum. This conference has a reputation for providing entertainment covering the normal downtime. The final day of the trip will be 19 Aug, 2022.
We thank you for your patience and cooperation during this time.

Mirumoto Dai |

Agreed, lets keep rolling.

EltonJ |

Hi, since we completed the Topaz Tournament, do we get any XP or AP(adventure points)? also does the Topaz Katana come with any special stats or something?
You gain 8 XP for completing the tournament. You get to hold the title of Topaz Champion for one year. You're royal Katana is DR 4k3. You also get 10 honor points and 4 koku.
Asao came second in the tournament, and gets a fine Wakisashi (4k2), 3 koku, and 6 experience points.

Isawa Asao |

Not looking it up, but I'm betting the title comes with a SIGNIFICANT status boost, too, which vanishes when the title does.
Status matters when people start making claims about what was done or said, far more than witnesses do.
And thank you for the rewards. I will adjust in a bit.

Isawa Asao |

That is THE Emerald Magistrate.
We aren't magistrates, and don't have whatever Status bump that might entail (or it might provide a floor, with no inherent bump) until after we reach the capitol and are assigned said duties.
Right now we're bright-eyed and excitable young Samurai out on our first one-day trip across the Empire.

Mirumoto Dai |

Not that I have done a lot, but do we all get the XP or just Isawa and Matsu?

Isawa Asao |

So, generic posting of warning.
My wife reports for surgery in roughly 12 hours.
Her surgeon has asked me to take 2 weeks from work to be at home to provide assistance.
That will also mean corralling the two grandchildren, keeping them entertained and fed while their Mom works, and keeping them out of Grandma's hair.
Can't say that I'm positive what my posting habits will be like until I can return to my normal schedule.
Thank you for your understanding, and go kill something evil, will ya?
