Malevolence

Climbing down the crude rungs requires a DC 10 Acrobatics check, the last 10 feet of the shaft open into the middle of the room, leaving a 10-foot drop into the cave below.

We know how to get there via the inside path, so...

Malevolence

Once you make it down the crude ladder, DC 10 Acrobatics, you can easily make your way around the lake, up the short stairs, and to the stone double doors.

"Alright. Fine. We can go the way that risks falling and breaking a leg doing down this decades old, crude ladder instead of using the one born out of magic yesterday," Pavo narrates as he heads down after the others.

Malevolence

I'm assuming you can all make it down the ladder just fine and/or heal up any wounds should someone fall. Let's keep moving forward!

You push open the stone double doors.

Part of this room’s eastern area overlooks a larger space to the west, set off from the rest of the room with an elegant, iron railing. Two short flights of stairs descend 5 feet to the room beyond, which appears to be a combination of a library, a workshop, and a surgery room.

Books line the stone shelves along the western walls, and a small iron coffer sits in the middle on a semicircular platform. Alcoves to the north and south feature shelves filled with strange objects.

A pair of workbenches to the north stand on either side of a stool; the tops of these workbenches appear covered with several empty glass jars and partially constructed metal cannisters. To the south, alchemical tools and glassblowing equipment cover a long, stone table.

In the middle of the room, a metal and wooden operation table features surgical tools along with several restraints that rest nearby.

Rivulets of phosphorescent green fluid dribble up the stone walls to pool in glowing puddles on the ceiling above.

A tall elven man with gray hair, round spectacles, a head mirror, and a white jacket, greets you enthusiastically.

”Welcome! I have the tools polished, the equipment organized, and the tables prepared for the procedure, just as the master requested. Time to cast aside the limitations of the flesh and to begin your new lives! Have you chosen who will go first, or shall I?”

DC 25 Occultism:

The workbenches to the north contain several partially completed brain cylinders, while the longer table to the south to was used to craft glass components and preservative fluids.

"Oh our brains are going to stay attached to our glands and organs, thank you very much. As Astanti proved in her landmark study, while you can remove a mind from the body, it also locks the personality down, severely limiting the ability to allow mental reconfigurations and even simple changes of opinion when presented with new information. You can pull an apple off the tree, but it won't grow any more once you do. That is not even getting into the degradation problem."

She strolls with her arms folded as she looks at the set up. "Honestly, I'm not surprised you are still maintaining such an out-of-date setup. This is the exact problem you run into when you lock yourself into hermitical investigation. Arcano-scientist consensus has progressed in ways over the past fifty years that you have no access to. And now you have put me in the awkward position of telling you that you have simply wasted all this time, which for all I know will end up with you attacking me out of frustration and denial." She casually draws her rapier and shrugs. "That is of course unless you are a rigorous enough investigator of the world to admit the possibility you have climbed the mountains of knowledge in vain for who knows how long."

This is why I studied the humanities at Chelaxian finishing school!

Abella shoots off more electricity for her part.

"Huh? What?" Shade is obviously confused by what has happened to him, but he doesn't seem to let that bother him too much.

First, he concentrates on his starknife, which is still around.

Ixirizmid isn't able to entirely dodge Abella's electric arc, and while Cammy and Shade's spiritual weapon both miss, Tuco lands a kick for a critical hit, killing the strange creature before it can hurt anyone again.

Out of combat!

While you recover and search the lab, you find several interesting things.

The collection of books and papers on this room’s shelves predominantly cover the topics of anatomy, surgery, and a wide range of experimental and mostly unethical experiments. A character who Investigates while in this library can make use of the books to gain a +1 item bonus to any Recall Knowledge checks associated with these topics.

Xarwin had heavily annotated many of these books. A character can use these annotations to Research Ioseff Xarwin, Asethanna Xarwin, Fulvia Nostraema, the Dominion of the Black, and the Order of the Starless Night.

The unlocked metal coffer on the shelf to the west holds the speech module for the brainclock! You've now found all three missing pieces: speech, hearing, and vision.

Among the equipment on the southern table is a set of expanded alchemist’s tools, a pair of alchemist goggles, and a spare lens for the starless scope!

Well done all!

Phased is thrilled to have her grandfather clock in working order. Perhaps the brain is literally her grandfather. Shall we repair the singular timepiece above?

Malevolence

Some folks still have conditions for 24hrs, but you're free to continue on regardless. There are also items to divvy up should anyone be interested. You can head up to the grandfather clock, or continue to search the basement. I'll move you on once there's a consensus!

"Yes. Let's go to the clock. It's least likely to kill us," Pavo says while Shade patches their wounds. His own wounds smooth over after the cleric tends to them, his kyton blood refusing to let his flesh be disfigured.

Shade quickly grabs the spare lens, wondering now if he has enough to risk using it. Probably not, he thinks, as this is a rare and precious thing. ”Are any of us likely to do alchemical crafting? Or at least have the skills to identify alchemical items should we come across them?”

Shade has Clever Improvisor, so can use the craft skill untrained for things needing Trained, but is only +5,

You return to the brain clock in the upper hall.

The pendulum swings, while the brain floats above in the glass cylinder.

It will take a DC 20 Crating or Thievery check to remove the cylinder from the clock so that you may reattach the various modules to it. You can try as many times as you need, but a crit fail will damage the cylinder!

Once removed, let me know the order in which you want to reattach the modules. They don't require a check to attach, but a certainly amount of thoughtfulness will help.
