Errr.. Is it dead or not? I've heard trolls are hard to kill, but it's the first time I see one. And it's scary!
GM: what kind of Knowledge is needed to ID a troll?
Korgaar the Keen
|
"Great Nethys! A troll?!" Korgaar swallows, uncertain. His hand grips his hammer tightly.
"That's a dangerous brute of a creature" the wizard advises - he trained for years as a young dwarf to dodge under the attacks of trolls and other giants. "But it didn't put itself up there and that means there's something worse hereabouts. Nothing for it. I'll have to talk to it."
Korgaar tucks his hammer back in its belt loop and takes a step towards the troll. He speaks to the troll in its own language.
"Herra Tröll. Ég er töframaðurinn Korgaar. Þú munt segja mér hvernig þú varðst til á þessum stað; hvað gerðist hér? Hver eða hvað hefur gert þér þetta?"
The Red Reverend
|
The Reverend surveys the scene from the entrance. "Sloppy work," he comments dryly, "but I suppose whoever did this thought they were clever. Needs to see how they do it in Kaer Maga."
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Other than expressing professional interest, he will simply wait to see what jumps at them next.
Keynala Smith
|
Nala steps up into the room and watches the cracks carefully, expecting something to burst out at any moment.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
| GM Bret |
The troll babbles something nearly incoherent in the middle of it’s painful wail.
“Menn pynta og éta mig! Ég á að vera sá sem borðar, ekki máltíðin! Hjálpaðu mér og ég mun ekki borða þig í dag!”
Note that the actual word is very general and would include elf, orc, or most anything else that is medium sized and looks humanoid. Giants (especially trolls) are not very precise about such things.
You can have a surprise round as they think they are hidden.
If you want to give everyone on your side a chance at a surprise round, it would take a Bluff check to send a secret message. You would be pressed for time, so no taking 10.

Giving a chance for Red Reverend and Keynala to use the information.
The Red Reverend

Might as well try.
The Reverend makes a small gesture with his hands that, if Pathfinder Sign existed in scenarios where it isn't specifically called out, would mean "enemy over there".
Bluff: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Surprised I remembered that one, he muses as he grips his scythe.
Keynala Smith

Nala is about to speak, but instead just pulls out her trident and steps up towards the troll, "Here I'll help cut them down."
| GM Bret |
Everyone sees Red’s signal for enemy.
Colleen: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Desynthia: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Keynala: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Korgaar: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Red Reverend: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Theron: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Green creature: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Yellow creature: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Currently the two creatures are hidden. If you haven’t seen them yet, it requires a successful Perception check as a move action to locate them. If someone points (like Red did with Yellow) you know which square they are in but they have total concealment.
Surprise Round:
Bolded May act. Only a move or standard action in the surprise round.
Religion to identify the creatures. You need to see them to identify them. Each would require a separate check.
The troll is above the alter and bloody floor. Moving in those squares requires a DC 10 Acrobatics check in order to run or charge in this area. If a creature fails this check by 5 or more, it falls prone.
The troll has one arm bound by rope and is hanging from a chain. You can attempt to push the troll so it swings from the chain with a CMB attack to do a Bull Rush. You can also attempt to break the rope, cut the rope, or cut the chain. The chain is too thick and sturdy to break.

| GM Bret |
I had already rolled everyone’s passive Perception checks. That is how Keynala and Red Reverend knew of the creatures.
That is why I said it would be a move action to search for the creatures.
Desynthia starts chanting.
Colleen moves forward. She doesn’t have time to search for the creatures as she moves up.
Theron easily slices through the rope, freeing the troll’s arm.
Although it didn’t matter in this case, yes I will allow power attack against an object. Useful if you decide to go for the chain since it has hardness.
