Dungeon Master S - 2e |

Welcome to my Play-by-Post!
Here's the ctrl+P for all my games:
1. I've been running games since the late 1980s,I've seen a lot of editions. I started playing PFS with Slot 1 Season 0 at Gen Con. I'm solid with the PFRPG rules, but everyone makes mistakes. I'll try to be as fair as possible.
2. I'm a Venture-Lieutenant for Southern NH. If you're ever in the area, or youneed help finding games/conventions there. PM me.
3. I post with a high rate of frequency. That being said, if you guys can post 2-3 times per day, awesome. If it's only 1/day I understand. No worries. Real Life Comes First (tm).
4. Feel free to preemptively roll Perception, Thievery, etc. If it's a secret check, just do it in spoilers and properly avoid looking. It makes the game run more efficiently. I ask only that you make sure minis are placed in their actual position in case your choices have consequences (good or bad.)
5. Let's get started:
Player Name:
PC Name:[
PFS#:
Faction slotted:
Downtime:Feel free to roll now.
Perception and vision/senses:
Default Exploration Tactic:
Notes:Anything I should know; passive abilities, boons that are way out there, etc. If you have abilities that are immediate actions that interrupt an enemy, I'll be as fair as possible, but you can help me out by telling me under what conditions you typically use it.
----------------------------------------------
Some expectations in my games:
That's about it! Looking forward to the game!

Likely the most unusual, Tempest is a gourd leshy and stores his spear inside his skull. Also, I have a 'seedpod' attack that can entangle if I crit with it.

Dungeon Master S - 2e |

We currently have 2.5 scouts, which doesn't benefit the party. Just a heads up! Looking forward to tomorrow!

Dungeon Master S - 2e |

No worries! Realistically we're all still pretty new. I'll be honest, my own gaming journey was: BECMI, 1e, 2e, 3.0, 3.5, PF1, SF, PF2.... so I mix up rules ALL THE TIME.

Dungeon Master S - 2e |

Aid token hand out sharing fixed.

GM Kate |

Hey, it's an aid token!
---------------------------------------
**AID TOKEN: Provide Knowledge**
**Passing From**: GM Kate
**Passing To**: Dungeon Master S
**Aid Character Name**: Argoni Slate
Effect: Gain the benefits of an automatic success on a check to Recall Knowledge.
**Boosted?** Yes!
**Boost Effect**: Gain the benefits of an automatic critical success on a check to Recall Knowledge.
---------------------------------------

![]() |

I'm curious about what we need to do to pass along the aid tokens we have. Can we boost them as part of a check we would normally do, or for example, with Allied Offensive, do we need to make an attack roll in combat that is *only* boosting the token? Because it feels like we may have met the conditions for most of these already if we can boost as part of an action we are already doing.

Dungeon Master S - 2e |

My apologies we have. IIRC though we only pass one per section? We have the one passed to us. I'll double check today.

![]() |

@Erathiel: We were all given a minor healing potion from our interactions with the Venture-Captains at the beginning of the scenario, so you should have one if you haven’t already used it. I couldn’t tell that you had taken it but, if I missed it, Alanosse would give you his potion...

![]() |

And we can't redo Treat Wounds for an hour after that the last treatment, which is why Mirtha isn't offering her medical services.

![]() |

Yep.
I think there's a feat at higher levels that lets you do it more often, but currently only 1 attempt per victim per hour.

Right! I thought it was a choice between a minor healing and and antidote. But the choice was between antidote and antiplague, right?

GM Hawthwile |

AID TOKEN: Burst of Healing
Passing From: GM Hawthwile
Passing To: Dungeon Master S
Aid Character Name: Garad, a tall Garundi master of primal forces
Effect: A fellow Pathfinder heals all the PCs by 1d8
Boosted: Yes
Boost Effect: Increase healing by 1d8

Dungeon Master S - 2e |

Hey everyone. Your chronicles are HERE My adobe is being weird, so if there's an issue I apologize. I'll fix them from my work system tomorrow if need be. Once I have confirmed you're good, I'll shut the thread down. Thanks for a great game!

![]() |

Thanks, GM! Great game! Love how the dice gods swung back and forth... :)
For the Earned Income, we add them in ourselves?

Dungeon Master S - 2e |

Zelphari, roll the dice here, but you can self add.
Alanossë, same. I started with BECMI, then 1e, 2e, 3.0, 3.5, PF1. There are some things I LOVE about 2e, and others I just do NOT.

![]() |

I had rolled it here. Got a 22.
Curious, what don't you like about 2E?

Dungeon Master S - 2e |

There are two things I'm not sold on, and they're VERY different things, one crunch, the other is fluff:
Crunch: The math is TOO tight for me. 1e saw massive disparities in power curves between classes, but I think the pendulum swung a bit to far the other way. Fighters don't stand out in fighting, clerics don't stand out in healing. It's too even, which sounds like a weird thing to be critical of, but c'est la vie.
Fluff: I HATE how everything is a feat. One of the things that drew me to the game as a kid was the vocabulary. I really like the variety between classes, he terms and words. Labeling everything a feat kinda kills the imagination a bit.
They may seem niche and minor, and maybe they are. I mean I do play a lot of 2e still, but it's missing some magic from 1e in its effort to be a more balanced and even game. (that being said I LOVE the action economy. I LOVE the fact that monsters are unshackled from PC rules, and a few other things.)

![]() |

Thanks for GMing! It was a great session!
I respectfully disagree with you about fighters, because I actually think of fighters as being the best example of their class design reflecting the archetypes they are supposed to be roleplaying. Fighters having attack of opportunity is a pretty great way to simulate their tactical acumen, their feats mostly give them a new ways use the action economy, and in play the boost to their accuracy means I see fighters get a LOT of critical hits. Its the casters that I think really blend together. Heck, I think all five caster types share half their class feats in common.
I do very much agree with you about the overuse of the word feat, but I never really liked that word feat to begin with though. Its not even how the word is used! Maybe its supposed short for *feature*? That's the only reason I can think of why they landed on that term for 3e.

Dungeon Master S - 2e |

Those are definitely good points (and my personal experience with the fighter caps at level 4.) I think my issue is more the number of niche abilities I need to wrap my head around.
I remember talking to the 3.0 designers at GenCon years ago, and the original idea was that feats would unlock "feats of heroics" (my shortened term, not theirs.)
Either way, I am enjoying the games as I always have. I'm sure I'll be playing PF3 when it comes out.

![]() |

Yeah, I’m more inline with you on 2e, I think, GM, especially concerning the balance and the feats...but perhaps more pessimistic overall. My PC is a fighter and yet I have just as high of a thievery skill as the thief that was in our party. And I don’t like how they’ve restricted some of the feats...only fighters can get Point Blank Shot? Why can’t rangers? And seems to me the Ancestry feats don’t make sense to me. If you’re an Elf, shouldn’t you have most of the traits of an Elf at birth or at least at adventuring age as opposed to picking Ancestry feats at various levels?
My favorite character to play in RPGs (and to read about in fantasy fiction) has always been Elven Ranger types, armed with longbows (which get restricted with the volley penalty); seemed like 2e went out of its way to nerf my favorite PC to play...that’s one reason Alanossë is a fighter w/Ranger dedication as that’s the only way I could get close to playing what I like...
That being said, this was a much more fun scenario than my first two, so I’m not giving up on it yet...
I'm sure I'll be playing PF3 when it comes out.
Is it coming out next year? I kid, I kid...

![]() |

I really enjoyed this first special. I especially like the idea of it being fey focused.
This is being a real stickler here...but virtually none of the bows you see in fantasy art are actually longbows. Longbows were pretty much only used in England and in battle they were generally fired in a high arc rather than straight on...you know, volley fire. Basically, think classifying all bows as short or long is kind of misnomer and not terminology commonly used outside roleplaying games. I have a feeling that whoever slapped the volley trait on longbows wanted to reflect that.

![]() |

While you may be right in general, there were quiet a few longbows in fantasy art/literature, especially in the novels I grew up reading back in the seventies...
The Elves of Tolkien used both longbows and shortbows; the Elves of Mirkwood used shortbows while the Elves of Lothlorien used longbows. The movies of Peter Jackson stayed true to that as well; in The Hobbit, Legolas is seen using a shortbow while, in the Lord of the Rings, particularly after Galadriel gifts Legolas the Bow of the Galadhrim, throughout the rest of the movies, Legolas is clearly using a longbow. And much of that time, during the fight at Amon Hen and at Helm’s Deep, he’s using his longbow within point blank range (30’ and under)...at Amon Hen, he uses it almost exclusively at very near melee range. Beleg Strongbow from The Silmarillion also used a longbow...
In the Hildebrandt Brothers’ art in The Sword of Shannara novel, the Elves Durin & Dayel, in addition to Menion Leah, are shown using longbows...

Dungeon Master S - 2e |

In older editions, there were major mechanical differences between short and longbows, not just range.
So this conversation is a lot of fun, and I don't mean to wrap it up. If any of you are looking for a PbP table and want to continue your 2e journey, keep your eye out in The Lodge. I've got to wrap up a couple more ad hoc games, but I'll be running some PFS tables starting in a couple weeks.
I'll keep this one open for a day or two as I don't want to close it out midconversation.

![]() |

I wasn’t aware there were mechanical differences in older editions, but I’ve only extensively played a couple...I played a lot of AD&D in the seventies and then a lot of PFS 1e the past several years PBP...if you include some of D&D PC games, then 3/3.5 as well...
You don’t have to keep this open for me, GM, and sorry for the old rant. Thanks again for running this...it was a fun session and I enjoyed playing with everyone.

Too Shay Alanossë
I read LOTR when I was really young and I do remember that elves specifically used longbows. I am much more familiar with the movies at this point. I don't think you see characters in movies using proper long bows often because they are probably a lot harder to make look good on film. I guess I liked that they actually made the types of bows have more of a tactical difference between them.
On the other hand...one of my favorite fantasy tropes are good old-fashioned armored knights and I don't really like how full plate armor is really only worth it mechanically for characters who are planning on keeping their Dexterity low. So I get how you'd feel about seeing one of your favorite concepts made into something that is more limited. Overall, I like how heavier armor essentially turns Strength into a defensive stat in the system, but it erks me a little to see that there is very little reason for most playeres to use full plate when they can very easily get the same defensive bonus out of splint mail.
Thanks again GM!
