Seamus tumbles under the ranseur to a more advantageous position, but fails to capitalize on the stroke, missing. Izomandakus reloads his crossbow while Pachemu continues to look, well, cute. Kast, Meg, and Kizzy lash out at the beast seemingly simultaneously, reducing it to three large chunks as it falls, quite dead, to the floor.

There’s not much left for Izomandakus to study, though I’m sure his hopes of more shall be fulfilled…

We are out of initiative.

"A sinspawn? What the heck is that?" Nudging the thing with his foot, Seamus looks to Izomandakus, Then moves the polearm way and inspects the body a little. As he gets up he asks, 'Does anyone want the things weapon?"

Will take 10 (21) on perception, does the thing have any possesions other than the weapon?

The ranseur is old, and brittle. A fumble would surely break it in fact. You find nothing else of value.

Female Human(varisian)

Meg poofs the blood and flesh off her rapier, offering to help clean anyone else who wants to be tidied up.

”As Sea said, what the devil is a ‘sin’ and why does it have spawn?” She looks over the ranseur. ”I am not using that, and not just because I have no idea how.”

Retired to Taldor?

Smiling at Meg, Seamus shrugs. "It just seems like people wearing heavy armor like to walk around with fifteen or twenty weapons bristling about." He looks at Kizzy and winks.

"So shall we be on our way?" Turning back towards where the tunnel continues, telling his friend Izomandakus, "Come on, you can tell us everything you know while we keep searching."

Kast pokes at the creature with his boot, to make sure its truly dead. "How has it lived for so long? Has it been here long? What does it feed upon?" Kast asks a series of questions that he's not sure he wants the answers to. "Does it reproduce? Or was it made?"

Kast thinks to examine to see if it has obvious organs for reproduction, but then thinks better of it.

Meg wrote:
"...why does it have a spawn?"

"That's also a good question," he looks at Meg. "What then, spawned it? Not sure I want to know but we should check a bit more."

When others are ready, he'll move down the hall. Moved on map.

Kast shakes his head. "I got my eye on a sweet bardiche. I just don't have the gold to pay for it yet. It's the kind of weapon that makes a man known, you know? The kind that ensures you don't get turned away from service on the wall, you know?" Kast says dreamily.

"Definitely freakish..." Kizzy agreed and happily let Meg clean the residue of it off her blade.

Moving on with the group, they came to a junction in the tunnel ahead. "What do you think? Take this passage to the right, or keep going on straight?" Given they had just cleared a passage to the right, she was inclined to carry on that way.

'A sweet bardiche?' Scratching his head, Seamus asks. "Really, you just get one of those and your in?"

He watches as Kast goes forward and Kizzy goes to the right. "Hey guys, one way or the other and pay attention to what your doing!"

The party, at least momentarily, examines the eastern passage, short as it is. It ends in another torn down wall, beyond which is a small room, set with a door in the north. The original purpose of this chamber is unclear, but large mounds of rubble lie strewn on its floor from the destruction of the wall.

Most of the rubble consists of broken urns and other pottery containers that once held food stores, long since crumbled to dust.

Looking northward in the main tunnel, it ends after a curve, though there’s another portion of the wall which opens to another finished chamber. A red marble statue (image, though in full color) of a strikingly beautiful but, at the same time, monstrously enraged human woman stands in the middle of this room, her stony expression twisted in fury. The woman wears flowing robes, and her long hair is held back from her face by an intricate headdress of hooks and blades. In her left hand she carries a large book, the face of which is inscribed with a seven-pointed star. Her right hand holds a glittering metal-and-ivory ranseur.

Knowledge History DC 25:
The statue depicts Runelord Alaznist. She was the last Thassilonian runelord of wrath who ruled for many years over her realm of Bakrakhan. She was a specialist in wrath magic, now called evocation, and was said to have been a puissant arcane knight.
- - -

Appraise or Perception DC 23:
The ranseur is removable with a little effort. To a collector, it might be worth 400gp.

To the north of this room is another door, and to the east the tunnel slopes upward and is also stepped at the steeper portions.

I've revealed a bit more of the map, presuming you were going to continue on a bit. Where to next?

Meg finds the entire complex profound. That is to say, profoundly boring. Dusty, decrepit and—most importantly—completely devoid of people. Nothing interests her except people, and they are a subject of study she could easily spend her entire life on if she was inclined.

She perks up at Kast’s animated outpour of information. ”Runelord? Of Wrath?” A person of interest after all.

Meg does take a closer look at the statue after that description. A lady of wrath, eh? Meg could get behind that. She might have a little wrath in her future, after all. ”So what does a Runelord of Wrath actually do, Kast? Do you pray to her when you want to get angry and get even? Or is it a more ceremonial title you pick up for best display of—how did you say—‘blowing s!%@ up.’” Meg grins at the face of the stone Alaznist. ”Are you the wizard equivalent of a beauty queen, darling? ” She lowers her voice as she leans in conspiratorially towards the statue. She plays to the crowd, letting a touch of comedic exaggeration into her tone. ”Or should I be looking for you to bless my grand plans of righteous vengeance?” She laughs heartily, a signal to others that she is certainly joking and would never consider such things.

Following Kast to the rubble room, Seamus takes a quick look around, nodding in agreement, "Probably." As he moves to the door, he realizes Kast has left the room and headed back the hallway. Turning after his friend he hisses. "Hey, what do you think your doing?" Catching up with the limping wanderer. "We just left a door back there, with no idea what's behind it. I don't want to be surprised from behind by one of those wrath things!"

Realizing Meg was looking at the statue, Seamus shakes his head as Kast explains who she was. Nodding with Kast, "I had no idea either," Then he smiles slightly "I wonder what those academics Gherix and Tiasar would have paid to see this place,"

Raising an eyebrow at Meg's sense of humor, Seamus takes a closer look at the statue, shrugging. "Think we could drag it back to town and sell it?"

Turning to Kast, giving him a 'lastwall fist bump' hard in the upper arm. "Stop running around all willy-nilly there might me more monsters, we need to stay together." He gestures towards the hallways. "Which direction?"

Kast considers. He really doesn’t have any idea. ”I don’t think she’s a goddess, or even a demigoddess, so I don’t think you pray to her or anything. I think she, like the rest of the Runelords are long dead. I mean, if they were still alive, I think we’d know. Oh, we’d know.”

”Why are you hissing? Are you turning into one of those creatures?” Kast asks, stepping back from the suddenly violent Seamus and now hissing Seamus. He looks Seamus up and down and assuming nothing is wrong, tries to respond to his queries.

”What door? I don’t recall seeing any door. I was too busy looking at the pottery, I guess,” he replies, uncertain why he missed the door except that he was looking at pottery. ”Well, we can go back there if you want, once we’re finished here.” Kast tries to placate Seamus and his worry about things.

Kizzy assists Seamus (for convenience) and points out the ranseur is slightly different from the stone of the statue. Seamus takes a moment and can see it seems to be removable.

The real questions is, who removes it?

Izomandakus closely examines what remains from the slayed creature "As many things from old Thassilion, little is known about these creatures, but the main theory is sinspawns are corrupted products of magic used by powerful spellcasters that ruled in a past era"

The boy picks up the jaws of the creature or any other little remaining piece "The main hypothesis is they served as shock troops for their armies. Literally the embodiment of a sin made flesh, they are sentient abominations of distilled ectoplasm imprinted with the soul-image of slain creatures that possessed an abundance of a particular sin... I need to bring this to Brodert Quink, he might be able to tell more"

He then follows the group through the tunnel.

That would explain about the statue. I need to bring this to Brodert Quink. He might be willing to pay for it Seamus, can we move it without breaking it?"

She gives Kast a congratulatory pat. "I never studied much myself, but seems like you know quite a bit. When you said you taught at an academy, I thought you meant teaching the spear." She gives him a grin before Meg says something about not knowing what a sin is.

"Oh, you were serious? I thought you were just joking again. A sin is sort of like a crime, except it's against the gods, or yourself, usually. Sasha told me there are seven that are deadly, they hurt you as much as they anger the gods. Gosh, can I name them all now? Lemme see... there's Wrath. Lust, Envy, Greed, Gluttony, Sloth..." She says as she counts them out on her fingers... "Oh and I always forget the last one. It 'goeth before a fall...' Ah, yes, Pride! It hardly even makes sense that it's considered a sin, but I guess it means carrying it too far."

To Seamus' question about which way, she merely shrugs. "Doesn't matter to me. I was following you."

He’s ready to follow Seamus down the corridor.

Izomandakus follows Seamus while still theorizing about the sinspawn "It is very good we found a sinspawn here. It can only mean this place has been important to the ancient wizards of Thassilon and still some of their magic remains here"

The boy blinks confused at Meg's question "A sin is when someone misunderstands a virtue. For example people often accuse of wrath those that are true champions of ensuring a fair treatment and do not tolerate by any way abuse of confidence"

Meg tosses a lights to follow Seamus. Assume she keeps one above herself, one on Seamus, one on Kizzy, and the last on either Kast or Izo, depending on which has their own light source

She smiles at Kizzy and Izo in thanks for the explanation. ”I appreciate you taking the time, darling. I know my joking about makes it difficult sometimes, as I can be quite the comedienne, but I am occasionally serious in my spare time.” She winks at Izo. ”I like your explanation the best.”

She taps her rapier absentmindedly against the wall as the group walks along. She holds up a loose fist, unfolding fingers one-by-one as she counts sins she is guilty of. ”Let’s see...wrath, oh I definitely have that one. Envy? Sadly, not my cup of tea. Greed? Been there, done that. The luster disappears quickly. Gluttony? Does drinking too much count? If so, then I must be in first place there. Or would it be sloth, as it tends to involve a lot of sitting around doing nothing? Hmm. Probably should just count both. Pride? Oh I know I have nothing to be proud of. Though if a lack of shame means having too much pride, I am definitely guilty. We will call that half.” She holds out her hand with three-and-a-half fingers extended. ”Not bad. Though I am forgetting one, am I not?” Having honestly forgotten, she goes through the list again in her head. As she grasps the last sinful word, her mind goes to a memory of two hands with delicate, firm fingers pulling open a pomegranate’s flesh with a wet, juicy crunch, the ripe liquid running down the rings on Sapphira’s thumbs.

Meg goes silent, her face red as the pomegranate, as she unfolds her thumb from her hand, making her count four-and-a-half.

The name Lamashtu means little to her but she seems concerned when Kast looks ready to bash the thing. Following Seamus warning, she spoke softly. "Um, that looks like pretty solid marble. "Did I say that?" Izomandakus looks surprised at Kizzy "Mmmm... it is probably like that, I tend to say random stuff after a couple drinks or thrice. But you are right. Why are you suddenly worried about quasits Kizzy?"

"Because the journal said there was a quasit down here, remember. Something about 'sending her freaks' up from these tunnels. In my experience, if you want to find the boss, look for the big doors." She points at the large double doors Seamus is checking for hazards. "And those are big doors. So a torch? Or any other source of fire will do."

Meg is grateful that her embarrassing moment goes uncommented on. She really will need to be more careful what she lets slip in the future. ”I hate to be the one that keeps needing to ask stupid questions, but what is this ‘Mother of Monsters’ nonsense? Is Lamashtu a god I’m supposed to know?”

Megs holds up her quiver of bolts and her rapier. ”I always buy cold iron, darling. In a world of abnormal creatures, normal steel simply will not do. It’s also barely more expensive, so why not. That is what Sappho says, anyways.” She turns to show the dagger on her belt. ”The dagger, too. You are free to borrow it if you want.”

'Cold iron to fight a whatsit?' Turning back from the door to Kizzy. "If Nualia is here the what's-it may be here as well. So we could be in for more fighting." He looks back to Meg, "I've heard her called 'Mother of Monsters' but that's about all I know." As Kast is busy bashing the black marble, he looks to Izomandakus questioningly.

As Meg displays her 'cold iron' weapons, he points toward the knife she flashed. "Um, just in case can I borrow the cold iron knife?"

Meg pops her hip out, the one with the dagger sheathed. "Here you go, darling. Do not worry about bringing it back clean. I can take care of that."

Slipping his throwing dagger back into his bandolier, Seamus nods, "Thanks Meg, clean or not I'm buying the first round when we get back." He then returns near the door, trying to listen as Kast bangs on the marble.

When the group is ready assuming he did not find a trap He opens the door.

The double doors seem neither trapped nor locked, so Seamus opens them just as Kast begins to haul off on the altar. Kast finds a dent in his weapon, but no apparent damage to the altar… not even a proper scratch! I mean sure, there’s a little digit, and some marble dust, but that’s about it… (Kizzy can apply her blanch, if she and Kast can sort it out.)

This huge room looks like nothing more than an immense underground cathedral. Stone doors stand to either side of the main entrance, but beyond this, the walls are carved with strange, spiky runes. In the center of the room is a large pool, with a ring of polished human skulls balanced on stone spikes arranged in a circle around the deeper midsection.

At the far end of the room, a pair of stone stairways leads up to a pulpit on which sits a second pool, this one triangular and filled with churning, bubbling water that looks almost like translucent lava. Yet while wisps of what look like heat and steam rise from the strange orange liquid, the room itself is deathly cold.

As you open the door and take this all in however, you see a a well armed quasit (image), hovering over the upper pool. She looks down on you, ”How dare you enter my private sanctum! This is my runewell!” she shrieks.

She takes the dagger and slashes her arm until a large dollop of blood falls into the churning pool before her. As she does so, the pool’s glow diminishes noticeably, but a fresh sinspawn, er, spawns from the lower pool!

Amazed she has more time, she does it again, and quickly another sinspawn is created in the pool! She frowns as she looks at the relative calm of the upper pool, apparently somewhat drained by the effort...

Sense Motive DC 20:
Frowning isn't the least of it. The quasit is really worried about the dimming of the pool and is not at all happy about it.

Well, that sure is something. A whats-it and some spawn and a pool. She looks to her comrades and waves goodbye with her rapier. "I will see all of you soon." Kast swings off his backpack before digging into the shrine, looking into to see if a crowbar had magically appeared.

"Hey! A torch! Wasn't someone looking for a torch!?" Kast offers the torch around and limbers up before getting to the smashing of the shrine.

"Cold iron, huh? Yeah, I think I mentioned that my new blade will be cold iron, too. I mean, when I can afford it. Yeah, it's going to be good. Sharp. A real orc-slayer's weapon. You'll see..."

Kast spins to see the doors open when he was just getting ready to work.

"Yeah, thanks. I guess I should have brought one myself." Qetsiyah happily accepts the torch and sets about to apply her weapon blanch to her greatsword. "Do you hear anything, Seamus?" She asks softly after he has listened for a while.

She stares for a moment after the door is opened, then asks aloud, not to anyone in particular, "What the frell is a runewell?" Then she decided to focus on the problem before her and charges in to attack.

Izomandakus raises an eyebrow as the door open to show indeed a quasit in the room, and quickly tells what he knows about those creatures "Look out, those are tiny demons created from the Abyss as servants to powerful spell casters. You will need cold iron or good weapons, avoid using electricity and poison with them, and they are pretty resistant to other energy sources too"

The boy then raises the other eyebrow when the quasit injures herself and sinspawns spawn from the blood "Interesting device... a runewell you say? But is this yours or from the Mother of Monsters little quasit?"

Seamus, back at the top of the order where he belongs, double moves into the chamber. Kizzy delays, then charges to attack the pretty blue one (image). Izomandakus takes a shot at red, and lands it, while his attack-pig continues to look cute as a button. Meg turns invisible and unnerves blue as she enters the room. Kast moves up, and protects himself from the evil that lies within.

The quasit, seeing Seamus on his way, flies further up into the high dome of the chamber, some 20’ or so above the platform. She then casts a spell on Seamus as her tiny high pitched voice screams, ”Flee from my sight you worm!” Will DC 14 or follow her command for your next round.
