If that succeeds, it would be a critical success. Too bad it's on Gwyn and not the main big bad

Wow, that's tough;)

Gwyn finds himself suddenly without his considerable magical might. The Titan's massive hand wraps around his (usually) impressive form, spear and all, lifting him into the air, bringing him close to its face like a child looking intently at an action figure.

A familiar portal opens and you move through it, finding yourselves in a secluded vale. The air is thin and cold. You stand on a path above a traditional looking Tibetan village below...

You see Eldritch, Max, looking somewhat harried, and are perhaps surprised to see your lost friend The Hypnotist accompanying him.

Seven comes with you, floating above the snowy path, her cloak flapping in winds you do not feel.

When everyone assembles, Max closes the portal, "welcome to Shambala. Let's go find the real Eldritch. He's supposed to be here." He leads the way floating next to Serena.

Grace waits until Gwyn is in hand, as it were, and the Titan is fully distracted--but then stops concentrating on the effect and steps through the portal.

Gwyn's power should return to him the instant she stops concentrating and leaves.

She hadn't fully intended to use Gwyn as a sacrificial lamb--indeed, she had hoped to convince him to work together, and tricking him toward Dracula had only been the backup plan. If she had taken Gwyn's agreement, she would have instantly failed in her duty, by her own standards, and Gwyn failed to understand that it was her own standards that measured her magic's limitations. And if she had sacrificed her power in that moment, she would have been abandoning her allies. She felt a wisp of guilt--but not too much--for tricking him, nonetheless, because that's the kind of person she is--but his hubris and his need to win prevented him from taking the better outcome, and for that she felt no shame. As Gwyn was as much force of nature as thinking being, she trusted he would survive, and left him as a problem to be contended with later.

Once in Shambala, she adjusts to her surroundings, and waves in half-disbelief to the Hypnotist. To Max, she says, "You are the real Eldritch, even if you're not Adrian Eldrich. You just had us leave the city to come here, so please tell me you know precisely what old Eldrich has that we need to save everyone, because otherwise our world needs you, Max, not him."

Max smiles and frowns at Grace’s comments. ”We need a plan. Probably a wedge to separate the three-face titan, because we can defeat them individually. Uncle Adrian and the other mages here should help us create that plan.”

“Back there, fighting that titan, we would just suffer the same fate as the heroes shunted to that dream dimension.”

“Hmm. Hypnotist, I just thought of that. Una started her conquest by moving all the heroes into this fantasy dimension letting the heroes fight fantasy crime. It was dream like. Maybe you could help us bring the rest of the heroes trapped there here to Shambala to mount our counter-attack.” Max finishes his random idea.

"There may be more to glean there as well. Why would the Titan bother shunting them to some dream dimension in the first place? Does it need them for something? I see no other reason to leave them alive."

”… unless dimensionally shunting them was easier than killing them. Some of those heroes are hard to kill. On the other hand, even I have the keys of Azog to move dimensions.”. Max replies to the undead Gylfir.

The Hypnotist takes a moment to look at each of your faces. You aren't sure what he sees.

"Gylfir, you appear to be mostly alive! And Gracie, still obsessing over every decision, I see. And this is Eoten in his current form. Very good. There is no telling what the Master Mages past will think, but they are a vast resource of magical knowledge. Between all of the Master Mages, surely someone will have an idea."

As he speaks, Win, Alex, and their team move through the portal into Shambala.

Grace narrows her eyes at the Hypnotist's comment, but now is not the time for banter.

Instead she says to Max, "I thought the plan was to separate the three and then contend with them? Although if they can help with that that's great, it's not like any one of the three alone is weak. And if she wants into the Nexus, I wanted to know if we could use the Nexus's dimension hopping power to reverse the effect of Una on the heroes--swap all of them for her and trap her in the four-color realm. D'you think that's possible?"

GM SuperTumbler wrote:

"Gylfir, you appear to be mostly alive!"

"And you appear to be mostly dead; much the same in the grand scheme I suppose."

After, he turns to Gracie.

"I believe the ship may have sailed on separating them. We needed Dracula to go on a merry chase for the spear. The Titan instead caught the powerless fae within seconds. It now has the spear and no reason to separate."

"Which does leave our plan B...which may work. Normally I would suggest that handing the opponent exactly what they want would appear to be such an obvious trap that they would never fall for it, but given we've already done it once..."

Max looks at Gracie oddly, ”separating the titan is most likely the plan. But, it doesn’t get much past how to do that, which is why I sought out Uncle Adrian. He and the other master mages might have an idea about that AND trapping the three of them in their own dream dimension.”

“Plus, I can shuttle all the heroes who we left in that dream dimension here, because we might need some reinforcements. Maybe the Hypnotist can help with that, too.”

“Clear-ish?”. He continues to float through the village looking for mages using his sight.

To Gylfir: "If Dracula gets the spear, he still might want to separate from the Titan to use it. Each mind may still have separate goals. And I don't know how you know he's fae, but the Hunter isn't powerless, I just slowed him down a second. He's a psychopomp; not easy to stop or kill, though I'm sure you might boast of sending a few on their merry way. Regardless..."

She nods to Max. "Okay, Master Mages? I don't know if I can find Adrian Eldrich. But... if there are multiple ones... what're the chances Merlin's here?"

Calesvol flashes.

Pretty good chance of that.

Weird. I swear to god that I posted more after "Calesvol flashes": a hero point expenditure for GM insight to learn if Gracie could figure out how to find/attract Merlin using her sword.

Have been having problems with the boards...

For no Hero Points, you can know that there is a cave here with a shrine to past Master Mages, and beyond that individual crypts for many of the Master Mages. Most of the crypts don't contain corpses, as Master Mages (Magi?) tend not to die in their sleep.

For a Hero Point I'd say the sword has always been able to summon Merlin. You can conjure up some version of him as a Power Stunt.

"Eldritch" Max Sinclair wrote:

I totally missed this!

As Max floats down the path into the village, he finds that it appears to be deserted, but that is mostly an illusion. The people are simply hiding in their whitewashed homes at the appearance of such a motley group of heroes. At the end of the road is a temple, largely in a Tibetan style, though with flourishes that are Celtic, Atlantean, Ancient Chinese, Persian.

Any of you with Magic or Mythological Expertise should know that the Crypts of Karu, where the Master Mages rest, lie beneath the temple. You might be able to teleport there.

Grace follows Max. "If we need all the help we can get..." As they enter the place of the Mage's Rest, she holds up her blade. "Calesvol and she who is its chosen bearer calls to you, Merlin. The world is imperiled once again by an evil witch, jealous of the power of heroes, will you help it once more?"

I'll spend that hero point. It's the apocalypse, it's now or never!

Sorry, I've been waiting for other folks to chime in.

Max opens another portal, this one into a crypts far below the mountain retreat of Shambala. The portal opens into a winding cavern is long, roughly cut from stone, apparently by hand. The ceiling is barely tall enough to accommodate Eoten's stature. The stone is dark grey. There are niches carved at irregular (but long) intervals. One is nearby, the next about 80 feet away.

Calesvol glows with a brightness more than you have seen so far, casting the corridor into strange bright and dark shapes.

The light casts a shadow of a man on the wall, though there is no man to cast the shadow. The shadow grows more and more clear before stepping from the wall and slowly coalesces into a man. He appears to be a fit 50, like a Hugh Jackman but with less well quaffed hair.

He is hunched over, almost as though in pain, and then he straightens. He is wearing some sort of skirt of dark blue fabric and no shirt. He glows with a faint light that you notice as Calesvol dims, not entirely unlike a force ghost, but not as transparent.

"Ahgggh! Who calls Merlin?! And in such a violent fashion."

He looks about, taking in the whole group, but giving special scrutiny to Gracie. "What is it that draws me here? Oh, what is this? What has Nimue done?"

Max opens his Sight in the crypts and starts looking for his uncle Adrian. He leaves Gracie to discuss the situation with the Merlin and floats through the crypts until he finds another former master mage.

Max moves through the crypts and around a few bends, passing shrines to Broken Crow, Simon Magus, and Nostradamus before find a niche that seems right. Carved in white marble, you see a familiar armchair that still sits in the study of the Nexus. It is draped with a familiar cloak and a pentacle amulet. All carved in stone. Max's Sight sees very little here that shows any magical aura. Even the ambient background magic is diminished here. In fact, he feels a bit unsteady in his flight.

Max tiredly smiles. What a comforting memory and appearance, the thinks to himself, but it’s made of stone which is unforgiving and almost eternal..

He remembers the advice that sometimes, you just need to sit down and relax for the knowledge that you already have to connect into a different pattern.. He doubted he meant to have a stone armchair, but you never know with uncle Adrian.

So the mage slowly settles into the stone armchair attempting to get comfortable while searching his Sight and Mind for the last master mage. Uncle Adrian, the universe needs you again. I need you again.

Gracie blinks. "I'm sorry, I didn't intend to be violent. My name is Grace, Calesvol has chosen me to be its bearer. And we--my team and I--we need your help. The Mistress of the Underworld, Una, has merged with an ancient vampire and a necromancer and as a tripartite titan is in the process of destroying the world. She has exiled most of the world's heroes to another dimension, and we, Team Eldritch"--she sweeps her hand to indicate her companions--"are all that's left to stop her. Would you help us?"

In his mind's eye, or perhaps somewhere on the Astral plane, Max finds himself back in the study. Giant fireplace. Impossibly tall bookshelves crammed with tomes, scrolls, stones, and strange relics from many times. Rich wood paneling. The smell of dried plants from around the world (and from other worlds) fills the air, as well as the smell of sacred woods burning.

Adrian sits in the chair across from Max. "Maxwell Aethersmith Sinclair. Its good to see you, boy. And look what you have grown into! But I'm afraid I must tell you that you are wrong. You were my best student, but you always lacked confidence. The universe doesn't need me any more. Earth needs a Master Mage, but I wouldn't be here in the Crypts if that was me."

He grins broadly, "Well said, Grace. That was a little trick. Accustomed to startling magic, Max smiles and resists the urge to get up and hug his departed, beloved uncle. "Well, sir. We currently do not have a Master Mage, and we are out of ideas on how to break Una's titan."

"I think if we had a wedge and something really powerful, we might do it. Then, we can either defeat the three with the force of all the heroes. Or, Gracie wants to trap Una in her fantasy dimension that she initially trapped to give her worlds to rule. Dracula and Malador can be destroyed again."

"We've come for ideas. A plan. Hope. That we can save the dimension." Max rambles.

"I don't believe we have time for your pining; the Titan ravages our world as we speak."

"We've come for ideas. A plan. Hope. That we can save the dimension." Max rambles.

Adrian's brows furrow in consternation. "Maxwell, you have missed a few things in your studies. Una is the Master Mage and Dark Lord of the dark dimension we call the Netherworld and 999 other dimensions, even though there are many netherworlds, many ruled by other Dark Lords. And Malador was once the Master Mage of Earth, but he broke his own rules and shattered his power. The way to the Crypts is closed to him. Seven cannot come here. Medea has never crossed the threshold. Even the Crimson Cowl, powerful as he is, cannot come here. See." He reaches out as though to a shelf you cannot see and pulls a book from it. The book appears in his hand. "Karu made this place before there was even writing, so these words have been copied a few times coming down to us. But I have found them to be mostly accurate. And should you want to speak to him, you may rouse him from his slumber, though it isn't easy. Regardless, look here..."

He leans forward, offering the book to Max, his index finger indicating the line.

In catacombs deep beneath the mountain of the Shambala Temple lie the Crypts of Karu. Within these vaults will rest the mortal remains of Earth’s Master Mages, placed there by the monks we have trained who will maintain the Shambala Temple. The crypts are a sacred place, and no one except for the monks and the current Master Mage (or those with his or her express permission) may enter. The statues within the antechamber of the crypts are enchanted as guardians over the final resting place of the honored dead...

Gylfir "Deadman" Hrongarsson wrote:

The spectre rounds on Gylfir. "Hrongarsson, you might think before you speak so flippantly as you are both standing on sacred ground and speaking to someone who knows the workings of the curses that keep you in your current state of existence."

And for a few moments, Gylfir's heart stops beating.

Gylfir lets out a heaving cough as his newly-reimplemented biological processes stutter, then glares at the ghostly legend. He suppresses a shudder, as something he's not felt for centuries comes over him - a fear of his own mortality.

But he'd be a poor warrior indeed if mere threat of death were enough to stay his hand...or still his tongue, for that matter. Bluster was as much a part of the game as skill at arms.

"Play your petty games then, wizard, and let the consequences be on your head. You know as well as I that this is neither the time nor - as you so helpfully point out - the place for idle banter, threats, or chit-chat. Lives are being lost, and much more importantly souls are being used as fuel for the great beast's power. Your spirit may have the luxury of relaxing in this 'sacred place', but that is something those souls used as little more than kindling will ever have the opportunity to experience."

As he nears the end of his speech, even Gylfir is surprised at the vehemence in his voice. While his ability to care for human life remains almost as stunted as it had been for centuries, somewhere along the way he has genuinely come to care for the pure intent contained in their souls - something he really is willing to risk it all to protect.

Max accepts the book and absorbs uncle Adrian's words and implications realizing he would not be here without the directions from the Hypnotist and the serendipity of finding him during this crisis with Una. In reply, the new Master Mage carefully closes the book and says, "Adrian, there will be time to discuss that passage later. First, we need help to devise a plan to separate Dracula and Malador from Una's tripartite titan. It's too powerful right now and destroying the dimensions. Would a wedge work? Where could we jam Calesvol into the titan, and what would we have to hit it to separate the titan into its three components who can be defeated again?"

"If brute magic won't work, how could we trick the titan into a fantasy dimension where it could continue to conquer? What would you do?" Max's tone of voice has shifted to ask not as a student but as a colleague for suggestions. The panic has drained out of his voice as he focuses on potential solutions.

"The situation as you describe it cannot be as Una intended. Why would she plot all of this time, make all of these conquests, scheme these schemes, to share power with the likes of Malador and Vlad Dracula. Una wants to be a god. Malador wants to be the Master Mage, Dracula wants to rule human cattle in a world of eternal night. Their motivations can't align. There must be immense turmoil in this being. As you observed, Calesvol is a cleaver, as its name suggests. It focuses the power of numerous realms and mythologies. And you have a nascent god and avatars of two other gods with you. You should have the power to divide this Titan. And once that is done, you must cut Una off from her sources of power. I was a fool to fail to see her manipulations. She has been hiding all of this time within the very fabric of magic in this dimension, biding her time, manipulating you and your companions. So, lean into this Titan's turmoil, separate it, and deal with the pieces. Simple enough."

Max and Adrian are in an alcove or possibly on the Astral plane talking to each other privately.

Closer to where you portaled in, Gracie, Eoten, and Gylfir are talking to Merlin and The Hypnotist. Quite nearby to them are Alex (Sandstone), Win, and a UNISON squad.

Gracie is having trouble following. "Most superheroes nearly died before they realized or gained their powers, there's not much unique in that. Sure, everything leads to this moment, everything always leads to any moment. I'm not sure what being unstuck from time can do for us, unless someone has the power to leverage that to unstick Una..."

@ST. Waiting reply from questions to Adrian. Thanks for the census. Cheers

Adrian to Max:

"In my first encounter with Una, she attempted to seduce me. I played along with her charms long enough to figure out what she wanted. When I realized she wanted to claim the title of Master Mage of our dimension, I convinced her to agree to a wizard's duel. Una is proud of her power and her accomplishments. She can't resist showing off what she knows and what she can do. When I won the duel, she was bound not to directly attack our dimension until I was no longer Master Mage. My death and her manipulations of Seven are what allow her to be so attuned to the magic of this dimension. Use her pride against her. She believes she is irresistible in all ways. But ultimately you will have to find your own path here."

Don't fret too much about having the perfect plan, everyone. You have lots of good ideas.

Merlin to Gracie: "Una is just a scared little girl in the end. She was born powerless and sold into slavery. Everything since then has just been making sure she cannot be so disenfranchised again."

Max nods and replies, "Got it. Well, I hopefully will return soon. Besides discussing that book, I would really like to know what happened to you. But right now, we have to go save the dimension again." He finishes with a sad smile and floats back to the rest of the crew.

Arriving at a comfortable pause in the Gracie and Merlin conversation, the mage says, "I've the start of a plan. Gracie, we need to use Calesvol as our wedge to separate the titan. So, you need to jam it in good. And then, we need to hit it with a couple of near-god powers. Eoten and Sandstone, I'm looking at you two."

"Gylfir, there's a lot of internal strife and conflicts of interest within that titan. Need you to start stirring that pot as soon as possible and weaken the titan internally for the shock of the wedge to work."

"My main open question is our end goal for Una. Need to disconnect her from the dimensions where she draws power and trap her somewhere. I like that fantasy dimension she made for the heroes, but if I could detect the dissonance so might she. Need to be more subtle than that. Vivian, do you think you could you use your connection with her to make her transition into the fantasy dimension believable? Maybe do it when we shatter the titan making her believe that we failed, and her titan plan won the dimensions."

"Obviously, Dracula and Malador need to be mopped up, but we've done that before. Any other suggestions?" Max looks around the assembled troops looking for consensus.

<I can try. I'm not familiar with this Sandstone, but from the name I doubt she'd be hard to find.>

@ST: How would I go about doing this? I do have Remote Viewing; can I just start astral projecting myself around town until I find her or something?

"A horrific fate indeed. Would that any of us could go back in time an deliver the mercy of a quick death to her, that she might not suffer." he replies, voice dripping with sarcasm.

"I'm sure Una would be more than willing to converse with me further. She seemed quite disappointed when I had to take my leave earlier."

Gracie pointed this out above, but Alex is part of the UNISON fire team that came through the portal with Win. She is hear wearing a suit of UNISON Body armor.
