GM Doug, can I change my earn income on this chronicle to downtime to retrain a feat? I have really not been using Loremaster's Etude, so I think I will pick up Multifarious Muse.

That's totally fine!

I know there's a lot of text to read this morning so I want to highlight this for you.

The scenario will not allow you to stop to rest or refocus until near the end. In character, you should feel motivated to keep moving as quickly as possible even if you're injured. If not yet you will be soon.

Maybe I should just say I am going to hold back in this first check, with the thought that Varret might be good at the 'Impenetrable Thicket' check that will follow.

Why am I now thinking of the "Agony" song in Into the Woods?

If it were not for the thicket
A thicket's no trick, is it thick
It's the thickest
The quickest is pick it apart with a stick
Yes but even one prick, it's my thing about blood
Well it's sick
It's no sicker than your thing about dwarfs
Dwarves
Dwarfs
Dwarves are very upsetting...

So does one person lead in each section? (I better go reread that spoiler!)

Also... How do you make your lovely maps, Doug? Can you be hired out, ever?

SoT (Grad School Year 1, Sem. 1): Maps, Handouts, Macros Enmity: Maps & Handouts | Macros | Hero Points

There's no one person leading per se (at least in the mechanical sense, although you could certainly flavor the check as such). In an ideal situation not everyone will have to attempt the obstacle. You just need 3-4 successes and then your whole group bypasses it. So it behooves the group to have the most skilled attempt the check first to fish for crits and successes quickly. That way the PCs who aren't as good at the current challenge can skip it and may have a better option on the next challenge.

Glad you enjoy the maps! All of my digital maps should be up on PFS prep for anyone to use. I make them on my tablet while trapped in boring virtual meetings at work! :D

Yep! I use an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil and PDF Expert. (I used to use Adobe Sketch but this app has a graph paper setting so you can draw maps on a grid, and I can run all my scenarios off it from multiple devices in addition to extracting images).

I own PDF Expert. I don't have an iPad Pro or an Apple Pencil, but... I am looking to upgrade my iPad game someday. I should see if an Apple Pencil would work with it now, though. This actually inspires me to play with PDF expert more. Bret keeps showing me how to do stuff with it, so I ought to play with it more.

PDF Expert is so good!

I was one of those people who thought the Apple Pencil was ridiculous and overpriced but really fell in love with it after trying it out.

Looks like the 6-player adjustment pushes the success on many of these checks well past the 3-4 range and into the 5-6 range. Just a side note as that might seem to contradict my example.

Wow! Sounds like a recipe for disaster. Making it the same as the number of players makes the chances of crit failure much higher as someone is likely to have to make a check they are not trained in.

SoT (Grad School Year 1, Sem. 1): Maps, Handouts, Macros Enmity: Maps & Handouts | Macros | Hero Points

Yes, this chase was discussed on the gm forums as potentially being too hard even though you get a head start. Most checks should have a wider array of skills than you saw going through the jungle in part 1, but you will still want to use hero points here.

Each of the two times I’ve gm’d this my groups did quite well because they spent hero points generously (as a GM I usually try to signal moments where it's good to use hero points, which I like to think helps my tables succeed at tough challenges).

So, recently I came across this thread that asks about when you can choose to use a Hero Point.

I am really going to need a cheat sheet just to run games soon. I am so used to needing to choose to use a reroll before you know the result, I didn’t even consider the answer might be different for PF2.

So, can we know the result before using a hero point? Personally I would normally only use them in crit failures, but knowing rather than having to guess what is a crit failure would be nice.

SoT (Grad School Year 1, Sem. 1): Maps, Handouts, Macros Enmity: Maps & Handouts | Macros | Hero Points

Yeah thats fine. I’m on that thread. I usually give back hero points if the player succeeds on their first roll in pbp but could improve how I communicate. As I said on that thread i can improve my PbP GM Hero Point game.

How about just preemptive rolling for a hero point? You will fail anything under 18 on the harder checks and anything under 16 on the easy checks — essentially, the level based DCs you can find in the crb. If you’re not sure drop a roll in a spoiler and note you always want to use a hero point. I will never take away a hero point if you succeed on the original roll.

Yes, rerolls in pbp are a pain. There are many components of 2e that don’t translate well yo the pbp format.

I am fine with rerolling in a spoiler. I am still trying to figure out best practices for PF2 in PbP. With the number of GMs in this game, I figured it was a good place to discuss some of this.

Yeah. I'm also interested in what other (good) GMs think, like the ones in this game. I suspect some of this is just about good habit-forming where the player has to preemptively roll stuff a lot (Swashbucklers to do in 1E games), or fighters with AOOs in 2e (like Zarindlara pre-rolling AOOs is an excellent example!) Might also be good to work into the player expectations boilerplate.

We're all learning!

Pip Hip Hooray wrote:

You were probably one of the best at the previous one too (Nature again) and the crit allowed you to achieve the obstacle's minimum and move on. So, it was still a solid turn!

SoT (Grad School Year 1, Sem. 1): Maps, Handouts, Macros Enmity: Maps & Handouts | Macros | Hero Points

I'd say that if your PC just isn't good at any of these skills you can give up your turn rather than risk crit failing. That isn't in the rules in this scenario but it's similar to every other skill check I've seen in 2E and I see no reason why you should be forced to risk a crit failure. It would just be a failure instead (no progress).

I've played it and GM'd 1-20. Would be happy to GM it again! I would also be fine allowing Dennis to GM if he wants.

By the way, Doug (Packet), and Evie (Shwurk from Flooded King's Court), Nick, and myself are also looking to play a low-level game in the 1-4 range; I would need to burn a Glyph to replay or do Absalom Initiation. Trying to convince a local (Bernie) to GM but he's hesitant about PbP. There's room for more on that too, or a GM.

We operate 4 locations with weekly/biweekly events out here in SF so there's lots of opportunities; I tend to GM new stuff right away and then play later in the month. In the VTT environment, its been much the same, but now I can play with the people in Berkeley/Oakland too.

I hope the players left to make this last check are able to succeed — fingers crossed! This is a tough chase and you've done great so far. There is no adjustment for high tier and with 6 players you have to overcome max checks on each obstacle. This was like doing hard mode!

I will run 1-20 for this group since it looks like Dennis will run something for our low-level characters. Anyone from this table is invited; it might be fun to have many of the same PCs for continuity.

Would players want to start 1-20 after this scenario (we might be finished as soon as a week…), or after the con?

I worded that poorly. You get as many rounds as you need.

I was just hoping this would be the last since the characters up had decent Acrobatics. But it seems that we'll likely have one more round and then you'll pass the obstacle.

Sorry, Boss. I just noticed this. Thank-you very much!

Up until recently in PFS1 I have played low skill point characters (clerics, fighters, paladins), so I am used to falling back on descriptive roleplay to garner GM sympathy during chases ;)

Though in all seriousness, I have found with even semi-rigid GMs the usual 1e fighter/paladin skill specialities can assist the team during skill challenges, with a little creative roleplay.

SoT (Grad School Year 1, Sem. 1): Maps, Handouts, Macros Enmity: Maps & Handouts | Macros | Hero Points

I am setting up the last encounter but just got yoinked into a work emergency.

I hope to get the party started around noon West Coast time.

You will be able to fire the cannons on the ship, it's a 2-action Activity and it uses a special attack modifier. The cannons can be boosted by Inspire courage. They can only be fired once a round and if you crit miss they get jammed for a round.

You may want to think about who's going to fire the cannons. You can also look at the map to see what you;re facing for this encounter.,

How the Cannons Work:

FIRE THE CANNONS! 2 Actions
You help the Unsinkable’s crew to fire the ship’s cannons at the manifestation of Qxal. The cannons can fire either cannonballs or harpoons at a range of 100 feet. Attempt an attack roll with a +17 bonus against the manifestation. GM says Inspire COurage works if you include the crew as your allies!

Critical Success As a success, but the manifestation takes double damage. If hit by a harpoon, the manifestation is pulled 30 feet toward the Unsinkable.
Success The manifestation takes 2d8+9 bludgeoning damage if hit by a cannonball or takes 1d8+4 piercing damage and is pulled 15 feet toward the Unsinkable if hit by a harpoon.
[b]Failure
The attack deals no damage.
Critical Failure The attack deals no damage and the cannon can’t be fired again on the next round.

I also made macros for these on slide 2.

Since the cannons appear to be a constant bonus, I would say Zarindlara should fire them because she has the most hero points. When she runs out, someone else with hero points takes over.

That is a good way to avoid jamming the cannons.

In character, Gurmire would be interested. Out of character, the cannons would probably jam on the first shot.

Can we put Magic Weapon on the cannon?

Horizon Hunters

However, Zarindlara is already the strongest long-range offense. Someone else shooting cannons might make sense so she can also shoot arrows.

SoT (Grad School Year 1, Sem. 1): Maps, Handouts, Macros Enmity: Maps & Handouts | Macros | Hero Points

No magic weapon on the cannons.

They're below decks, so you are not actually Interacting to fire them or touch them to buff with spells. You will be giving verbal assistance to the sailors, who are trained in operating these complex and dangerous pieces of equipment.

Hit the work deadline early. We're in initiative!

Qxal has a 60-foot range attack, but there are also 3 creatures on board with you now as well. Who fires the cannon is up to you. Packet and Zarindlara rolled stealth so the cocoons don't see them yet!

Who fires is up to you. Packet might also want a shot.
