Trostinek's cabin

John is satisfied with a quick look around. He's here to fulfill his contract, not pry into the vesk's personal life too much. (He does look at the letter.)

Dinnertime!

"Trostinek? Have I offended you in some way?"

No reply to my post above.

John's cabin for searchers:

John was travelling with only a backpack. As such he didn't have room for a lot. Two business suits and the red gown and pants he was wearing during the robot fight are in the closet. Basic hygeinic neccessities are on the bathroom counter. A medkit, makeup kit, and hacker's tool kit are still in the pack in a corner.

He seems to be living in his second skin armor and his pistol and cane are always near at hand.

Oops. Here's Trostinek's response.

Trostinek does appear to have taken a good beating. He is enjoying his meal though, and has a stiff drink in front of him. "Oh, no no no my good man...I was simply lost in my thoughts. After all, my bell was rung quite roundly in the cargo hold. I think this stiff drink, some mild medication I retrieved from the vending machine, and a good meal like this will get me back on the path to wellness."

"I be glad you've suffered no lasting harm." John smiles, takes a sip of his water.

"You know we be looking into Algiada's disappearance. Do you remember the time that you saw her, or her hand, last night with Lozu? And was that at her cabin?"

Jumping ahead to save time, but we can retcon the intervening conversation or delay the end of dinner as you wish.

John settles into the goose, working delicately with knife and fork to pare his portion down to creditably bare bones. "My parents would let me waste no food, and this be far better than any we had growing up."

When the meal is complete he lays his napkin over his plate and tackles the most delicate issue.

"We've searched the public areas on this deck and engineering without a sign of her, and we've cross-searched our own cabins. We would like to rule out the whole of our deck before we go to the captain and ask to access the crew's spaces.

"Would you mind if we were to look into your cabin? It be merely a formality, and you may of course be present, and I would open my own cabin to you in reciprocation.

"This be a matter of building trust between the passengers because it be looking more and more like the security officer's disappearance be no mere accident or happenstance. "

"Yeah...yeah. That was at her cabin. The last time I saw her. Lozu knocked on her door and I saw Algiada let her in."

Trostinek considers John's offer. "Sure. You can search my cabin. Of course I would like to be there. I will insist that my small case that only has personal items in it be left out of the search. You'll be able to see that it is far too small to hide much. In fact, I will hold it open so you can see that only some clothing, and extra pair of shoes, and some grooming supplies are in there, along with a gift from a family member."

...The chair turns to reveal a Kasathan, quite surprised to see the rather imposing Trox.

He flashes a glance at Grath, then turns to Rar'gul. With a sparkle in his eye, and a pleasant smile he addresses him. "Mr. Rar'gul, I presume. Thank you....for helping Grath with my dinner delivery. I am Rameem Vi Siala Corsen. You may call me Captain Rameem."

"My pleasure, Captain Rameem," Rar'gul replies, carrying the platter over to the captain. Offering a broad hand toward the kasatha, he says, "Please, call me Rar'gul." He chuckles a deep rumble. "Although, I suppose you alrready did."

Rar'gul casts his eyes over the bridge, looking for anything that seems out of place or unusual.

"It's verry imprressive, Captain," the trox says, nodding in approval. "Thankk you forr perrmitting me entrry. It's a highlight of my trrip."

Rar'gul hesitates a moment. "If it's not too much trrouble," he begins, reachimg for his comm unit. "Could I impose on you for a selfie? A photo on the brridge of The Chimerra with both herr captain and pilot would be a highly cherished memento."

The Kasatha in turn offers one of his four hands for a hearty handshake. "I'm glad you had the chance to pop in. And of course we can take a picture!"

Rar'gul, Captain Rameem, and Grath quickly pose for a selfie. Rameem has a mirthful smile, Grath throws up an Absalom station gang sign with his paw, and Rar'gul struggles to not dominate the picture too much with extreme size.

No, Grath IS NOT in any gangs....OR IS HE? He's probably just trying to look cool. Right?

After the picture, Captain Rameem takes Rar'gul aside. "I want to thank you for looking into Algiada's disappearance. Let's plan for a meeting tomorrow right after supper. I am instructing Grath, Song, Kiiv, and Lozu to be cooperative with any questions you might have."

He excuses himself and returns to his duties. Grath nudges Rar'gul. "Umm, I suppose we need to go. Why don't you pop by my cabin in about an hour. That will give you plenty of time to enjoy your dinner, huh?"

-SYNOPSIS OF CURRENT SITUATION-

Right now our investigators find themselves at (or around) dinnertime on The Chimera. Song has prepared several of the Pygosian Rending Geese that were slain earlier in the day. It seems to be a formal affair. Virtually all of the passengers and crew have at least made an appearance, and are available to interact with.

John and Yariel took this opportunity to take a look in Trostinek's room. They found a note, apparently from his wife, a wrapped package, and a couple of rolls of tape. There was also an undershirt that might have had a small bloodstain. Everything was left in the room.

John has sat with Trostinek, who was dining alone. He seems agreeable to a search of his cabin.

Rar'gul was able to talk Grath into letting him help take dinner up to the bridge for the captain. They took a selfie. The captain expressed interest in meeting after supper tomorrow. He has instructed the rest of the crew to be cooperative in your investigation.

A couple of loose ends I may have forgot about as I read back:

Doctor Flint Bridge queries Lozu. "I'm still extremely concerned about Algiada's well-being. With some assistance, I've searched a good portion of the ship to no avail. Who among the crew would you consider closest to her?"

She replies, "I'm not sure how to answer that. She used to be chummy with Grath, but they had a falling out recently. You'll have to ask Grath about it. Other than that, Algiada had a way of grinding on everyone." Kiiv, sitting nearby, rolls his eyes and nods in agreement.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Beauregard is invited to join Kiiv, Professor Benjam, and Lozu at their table.

Kiiv suggests Doc Flint take his seat. "I need to get back down and keep plugging away at getting that duct work cleaned out. I'll probably see you all in the morning for a bit of breakfast. With any luck I'll get a few hours of sleep tonight."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope these two posts help get things back underway for the investigation. Your characters may enjoy their dinner, carry on conversations, and perhaps follow up on one or two leads before bedtime. I will put a post in discussion about our timeline for play in just a little while.

"Thankkk you, Captain. Forr the picturre and the assistance," Rar'gul rumbles. "See you tomorrrrow," he says, turning to take his leave.

Pausing mid stride, he asks, "One more thing, Captain - have you noticed any unusual trrransmissions or system alerrts in the last few days?"

After the exchange with the Captain...

Making his way toward the door, he passes by Grath, his vestigial arms contort in his own imitation of Absalom Station gang signs. "Laterrr, brrro," the trox tremors.

"I'll pass yourr invitation on to Officerr Flash," Rar'gul says as he exits the bridge.

Once out in the hallway, he sends a message to his companions, attaching a copy of the recent selfie from the bridge. Appointment: Meeting with Captain. Tomorrow, after supper.

He then makes his way back to the dining hall, where he collects a platter of food and makes his way over to a seat by Trostinek and John.

The Captain looks puzzled for a moment. "No...everything was going quite smoothly until the disappearance and breakdown earlier today. No incoming transmissions at all, either routine or unusual. Nothing outgoing either."

T'sorkel enjoys the succulent geese, ripping meat from bone and gobbling it down with juice dripping on his chin. Shirren cuisine was more about honeys and nectars, but he had come enjoy more exotic fare traveling away from home. He turns his antennae to listen to the first mate speak about Algiada. For now he keeps out of the conversation, just observing Lozu, the focus of so much of their speculation on the disappearance.

Lozu appears somewhat uncomfortable at your question. "Algiada was able to lend me some money recently. I had some debts to pay, and it was extremely helpful that she could do this for me."

T'sorkel:
Lozu truly is uncomfortable answering this question. Her willingness to make eye contact is lacking, and she is shifting from side to side.

Trostinek takes a moment to think things through, whispering to himself for a moment, recounting each of his events last night starting with when you witnessed him arguing with Algiada on the engineering deck. "After you saw Algiada and I discussing our business plans and strategies below deck, I returned to my cabin for a bit. After that I ventured out to stretch my legs. I stopped in the dining hall and grabbed some Jerky Slams and a beverage that Song had left out for passengers. I think your Trox friend may have grabbed something about the same time (Rar'gul, hopefully that seems reasonable to you--if so, you do remember seeing Trostinek briefly in or around the dining hall). It wasn't long after that when I walked the halls up on the crew deck and saw Lozu and Algiada."

The man departs for the kitchen, swinging past the bar to pick up another glass of sparkling water.

In the kitchen John greets the android, "Song, dinner was a triumph. I would not have credited anyone who said they could produce something so delicious from those nasty rancorous creatures. This was truly incredible."

If asked to help, John will put his gown and cane safely aside and wash dishes in his second skin and trousers. In any event he tries to carry on the conversation. "Song, you seem to know everything going on in the ship. You knew we were working for Benjam, almost as soon as we did. How did you know about that so quickly?

"Last night, what did you do after putting up the snacks for the passengers? Did you see anyone about the ship between then and when Algiada's absence was detected?"

Beauregard mulls over his thoughts in his head. "Thanks for letting us in the know. And thanks for putting in what must be a lot of extra hours to get us underway again. I know you engineers probably don't get thanked enough."

He turns to the first mate.

"Y'know, I don't knows if I'd ever had something as good as this goose before. Feels almost too fancy for an ol' PI like myself. How about you? You ever tasted anything like this? I imagine you get around a lot as the first mate on a passenger vessel Too bad we can't find Iom so she could enjoy it. You saw her last night, right?"

-JOHN-

Trostinek is agreeable to meeting in his cabin in a half hour.

Song is thankful for your assistance cleaning up, and it's fairly easy work as it simply entails loading an automated washer and then stacking the plates and glassware.

Song is responsive to your questions. "You know, I think put two and two together. The professor may have let it slip you all were doing some work for him, and I knew that Algiada was missing. I can assure you that I don't know anything special."

Song continues, "I spent some time cleaning up after those annoying goblins, then I headed off to bed. Come to think of it, I do recall seeing that Vesk bounty hunter stopping by the Captain's cabin. I heard the captain say something about the thrusters, then the door closed."

-BEAUREGARD-

Kiiv gives you a pleasant smile and a nod as he excuses himself.

Lozu finishes chewing the last of her goose. "I don't get this sort of thing very often while we're en route somewhere. That said, for being a brusque, impolite android, Song has become a pretty good cook. I think we have it better than many other ships I have been on."

She looks confused when you bring up Algiada. "No....no, I don't think I saw her last night. I might have seen her early in the evening, but I don't think I did after dinner...."

Just before she joins Lozu and T'sorkel, Doc quickly responds to Beauregard's missive.

It depends. Three skittermanders stacked in a vesk-sized spacesuit? Yes. One humanoid holographically cloaked to appear as another? Possibly. A creature with natural shape-shifting abilities? Highly unlikely, as they would be replicating most, if not all, of the biomarkers I look for. Not to mention that a comprehensive bioscan is not something that can be done with any degree of subtlety.

There's actually a decent amount of contention as to whether a biohacker's microlab assists them in piercing disguises. Personally, I think the ability is too powerful to permit its use against any but the most flimsy disguises, but I'll leave the ruling up to the GM.

""Hmmmm" Beauregard muses, then types back a response to Flint-Bridge.

Doing it subtly isn't a problem. We've been given free reign to conduct our investigation. We don't have to tell people what we are looking for. Can that thing detect injuries? Like, injuries within the past day? Because if so our Kasatha Captain should have a large laceration somewhere on her to draw that much blood. Hmmm, keep that Idea under your hat. For now.

Beauregard will get up from the table and offer to help Song with the after-dinner dishes. If song accepts, he'll ask the following question sometime into the process.

If I can talk to song.:

"Say, Song. I noticed you don't have a medbay or dedicated doctor on board. I mean, we have the good doc with us on this trip, but what do you usually do if someone gets hurt here?"

Lozu responds to T'sorkel's questions about the loan. "I was in some debt, and Algiada was able to help me out with about 10,000 credits. It was very much appreciated. In fact, I was about to start to pay her back."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------

As far as the scanning goes, that may be something you would have to try. Doc, it does seem to you that it's unlikely it would work, at least in so far as the way a custom microlab is usually set up.

Loose ends with Song

Song replies to John regarding the time last night. "Honestly, I was a zombie as I was finally able to get things cleaned up last night. I'm not sure. If I were to guess, it would be xx:xx"

I'm not sure exactly what time xx:xx is--it's not important. What might be important is that xx:xx seems consistent with the timeline of events you have observed or asked people about.

Song talks to Beauregard about medical facilities aboard the ship. "Oh, I've got a medkit in that cabinet right over there, and there is one on the bridge too. Of course you've seen the vending machine. Captain keeps that pretty stocked up with medical supplies and medications. I've never been too worried."

-GRATH'S CABIN WITH RAR'GUL AND YARIEL-

Rar'gul knocks on the door, and it is answered by Grath, who has a drink in his hand. He seems quite surprised to see Yariel. "Yariel, errr, I mean Officer Flash....it's great to have you up here in the king's forest!" He scrounges up some chairs, and invites Rar'gul to sit on his bed. "Not sure these little chairs will work for ya, big guy. But my bed is pretty sturdy..."

His cabin is fairly cluttered, but it's not particularly dirty. There appears to be some sort of apparatus in one corner, possibly a small still for brewing his concoctions.

Speaking of which, he offers both of you a drink.

Should you take a sip:
It's good stuff. He knows what he's doing. Yes, it's strong, but it won't hurt you if pace yourself.

-JOHN AND BEAUREGARD, TROSTINEK'S CABIN-

You are both politely greeted by Trostinek. The cabin is very much as John saw before. Trostinek opens any cabinets or closets. He opens his bag for you to reveal only the personal items you noted before.

He describes the wrapped gift and note as something given to him by family on the occasion of his departure for the Pact Worlds. He does not reveal the contents of the small package or note.

"Now, I know you are doing the very important job of finding out about what happened to the security chief. I hope you can see that she is clearly not here!" Trostinek smiles in a good-natured manner. "I am willing to answer further questions, if you have them, so you can eliminate me as a possibility for involvement in her disappearance."

Beauregard will look at Trostinek and rub his chin.

"Well, see, we have a problem. You said you saw Kiiv last night going to the engine room, and the First officer meeting with the security chief last night. But both of them swear up and down that didn't happen. So either you are lying, or both of them are. Now, I dunno if you know this, but it's a bit of a PI trick to know that it's harder for two people to lie consistently than one."

"Thankks again forrr the invite," Rar'gul says, entering Grath's cabin, his vestigial arms forming a gang sign. "If yourr own skkill with the still is half that of yourr taste in fine drrinkkk, then we'rre in forr a trreat," he says in good humour, gingerly taking up the offered bed for a seat.

Accepting the cup of bathtub grog, Rar'gul holds it delicately in a massive hand and looks awkwardly at the others. I hope he minds his manners with Flash around, the trox worries.

Distracted by his concerns for the pilot's life expectancy, he unthinkingly downs a mouthful of the bathtub booze. Wincing in anticipation of the pain to come, he is pleasantly surprised to discover the ysoki actually knows what he'a doing. "It's good," he says, feeling a little burn. "Rreal good."

"Not surre what I expected, but it wasn't this," he says, looking around the tidy cabin.

John crosses his arms and taps the handle of his cane pensively against his shoulder while he waits for Trostinek's reply to Beau.

"Well, uh, look....I don't know what to tell you. Unlike a detail-oriented individual like you, Mr. Beauregard, people tend to forget little details like this. You have talked to Kiiv. He's been all over this ship at all kinds of crazy hours. I'm telling you, I saw him."

Trostinek continues, "As for Algiada, again, I'm telling you I saw her going into Lozu's quarters last night. My guess is that Lozu isn't telling you the whole truth because she has something to hide."

"Look, I had some gambling debt at some of our stops in near space. This money helped me get out of some jams. I am just about at the point where I can start paying it back." Lozu appears to be shameful as she relates this revelation.

When Rar'gul refers to Grath's homemade hootch, Grath cheerfully responds, "Not every little stop we make has something good to drink. Some of the places we stop, well, what the locals drink is poisonous to someone like me! I had to figure out how to do this if I wanted to relax with a drink or two. Captain Rameem even stops by every once in a while for a hit off my bottle."

When the topic turns to Algiada, Grath's mood turns darker. "“Algiada? I don’t want to talk about her,
other than to say good riddance to bad ryphorians.”

He pours everyone another drink.

"Sorrry, Grrath," Rar'gul apologises as he accepts another drink. "It's kkind of been occupying ourrr thoughts of late. Doesn't seem likke Algiada has many frriends on boarrrd. Has she given you a harrd time, too?"[/b pl

If Grath doesn't bite/want to follow this topic of conversation, Rar'gul will apologise again and drop the subject.

"Thank you for sharing this with us. I know it's a difficult subject." Doc pauses for a moment before she continues, "This doesn't seem like something the entire crew knows. How did Algiada learn of it? Did it seem unusual to you that she had such an amount readily available?"

Yariel hits up the vendomatic on the way to Grath's with a sigh, "better get something to make this swill go down. We ARE pumping him for info then splitting, right?"

She'll purchase another two slurms and try her luck on the rando package again.

Once in the scummy pilots quarters she puts on a half-fake smile but keeps things clearly laid out, "Listen, I'm only here to try the booze an keep an eye on my buddy here. So pour me a couple shots in a glass and we'll see if slurm improves with booze."

The convo drifts towards an inquiry of Algiada her nose twitches with interest, "I'll mark that, I've got a few species I'd rather never see again just from the actions of a few."

Interesting, maybe this whole thing is just about taking her out? No better place to 'lose' an enemy then the vastness of space. It would explain why most of the crew only seems to be giving lip service to any worries about her.

John says gently, "Mr. Trostinek, this afternoon your story was that Lozu entered Algiada's quarters. I don't believe you hurt the security chief, but you make yourself look suspicious with these fabrications. If you are to clear yourself, you must speak truth. We will be discrete and understanding. Our only concern is Algiada. "

Grath remains somewhat standoffish with regard to Algiada. He tosses his second drink back, and pours himself another.

He DOES seem willing to talk about Captain Rameem. "The Captain...I LOVE that guy...I mean...he's like the funniest guy on the ship. He treats me like, uhhhh, like famm-lee, or something like that you know..."

Do you want to try to keep up with Grath? If you do, both Yariel and Rar'gul need to make a DC 15 fortitude save. If you miss it, you gain the fatigued condition.

The more he drinks, the more talkative and outgoing Grath gets.

Yariel, I'll try to remember to get to your blind bag tonight. At night without my list. Oh, and Slurm proves to be a delightful mixer for Grath's bathtub gin. You still have to make the save though.
