A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 1–5.

Few societies have so vaunted a tradition of leading crusades as Taldor, yet the constant revisions to its history by scheming factions leaves the truth obscured by countless acts of political modifications. Even the lauded Kitharodian Academy’s texts are riddled with these changes, so when a secretive ally approaches the Pathfinder Society with information about a hidden archive that contains the unaltered histories, the Pathfinders plan a daring infiltration to recover the secrets of Taldor’s past victories so that Mendev might benefit from the discovery.

Content in "Library of the Lion" also contributes directly to the ongoing storylines of the Cheliax, Grand Lodge, and Taldor factions.

Shen is a tall, bald Elven woman with crystal blue eyes and a birthmark resembling the holy symbol of the Savored Sting on her right arm. Shen is usually wearing alluring clothing that underlines her attractive physique although you notice quite fast that her presence does neither seems pleasant nor enjoyable.

Initial conversations reveal that Shen is originally from Cheliax but has been living in Sargava for a couple of years now.

The first feeling of aversion that you had when you were interacting with her does not really subside but you have the feeling that Shen is a strong woman that hides her insecurity through an arrogant and aloof attitude.

You also learn that Shen is a Pathfinder associated with the Scarab Sages faction and sees herself as a seeker of knowledge, pleasure and freedom.

* *

Not always visible but always with her is a timid, snow white albino rat that Shen has named 'Sefid'.

Located in the Taldan Capitol city of Oppara, Venture-Captain Muesello’s lodge hides behind the facade of a simple bait and tackle shop, which Muesello dutifully maintains to provide Pathfinders a local base of operations that doesn’t invite much scrutiny. His pockmarked face breaks into a smile as bell on the door jingles, and he motions for everyone to gather in the building’s back room before locking up the shop and propping a sign in the window that reads “Gone fishing.”

Venture-Captain Muesello quietly closes the door behind him before speaking. “The Pathfinder Society does not have a sterling reputation in Taldor, despite my and others’ efforts to impress the local movers and shakers. As a result, the most prestigious universities and colleges often deny our agents access to the best libraries in Oppara, thinking we are meddling good-for-nothings. As one of the oldest intact civilizations near the Inner Sea, these libraries no doubt house some very precious volumes. Recently we received a most wonderful opportunity—an invitation, really, from a very powerful patron,” he adds as he withdraws a scroll tube with a broken wax seal from his apron.

“This patron will secure us a couple hours in the rare books collection at the Kitharodian Academy, during which we may peruse for whatever we wish so long as we also retrieve several documents of interest for our friend. That,” he punctuates by tapping the scroll tube on the table, “is where things get interesting. Apparently there is an even more precious archive hidden beneath the academy’s library, and our patron believes it to contain numerous original records and undoctored historical accounts otherwise unknown to the world! Our contact knows how to get into the archive and has shared the secret with us."

“Two hours is little time, so you must make the most of your time. I know it will be tempting to research other interests, but it would be selfish for the Society to think of itself when the Worldwound’s borders threaten to envelop Mendev and beyond. I am sending you in with the express purpose of uncovering more information about the Shining Crusade, the sustained war against the Whispering Tyrant a millennium ago.”

Lady Morilla snaps open a fan to fend off the room’s growing warmth, adding, “Historically, Taldor is the authority on massive military campaigns, but most texts have undergone extensive revision to serve some political agenda or another. Entering this hidden archive is an excellent opportunity to learn from the real mistakes of the past and apply those lessons to the Mendevian Crusade."

“Remember that you have permission to be in the academy’s library, but not in this secret archive, so do everything you can to avoid being noticed while exploring. In fact, the fewer clues you leave of your passage, the better. Specifically do not steal or destroy any of the library’s contents. A few slip-ups might alert the authorities that someone has been poking around, and too many with give them enough evidence to trace this act to us.”

Muesello opens a drawer in the table and begins pulling out a couple small parcels wrapped in cloth. “Any questions?”

"Oh, no no no!" Lady Morilla interjects. "Steal nothing! We are looking for the information, but we must leave the library in the same shape it is now. Nobody can know you were there!" She nods at Venture-Captain Muesello, who produces a large stack of paper and writing implements as she continues. "Tomorrow evening, the Kitharodian Academy will host an extravagant orchestral performance

in celebration of the Grand Prince’s birthday. Such an event should last several hours, and if rumors are to be believed, the Kitharodian’s finest intend to play a complex medley of Taldor’s greatest songs. Several of these are rather dramatic at times, and the sound should drown out any noise you make. With any luck, the performance will also draw away most of the guards.”

Muesello then slides the cloth-wrapped parcels toward the PCs. [b]“This one,” he says, tapping the first parcel, “contains a deck of illusions that I am in the process of modifying; instead of each card creating a random creature, each one creates a copy of one of you. The illusions won’t interact with anyone, but they can pretend to be reading and deceive the casual observer. Each only lasts for two hours, though. Stick a card to the bottom of a chair to create the illusion, and don’t forget to remove the card when you’re done. The other package contains several potions in case of emergency.”

Muesello hesitates for a moment before answering. “I have little doubt that we’re performing some small piece of a larger political plan, even if we benefit from the service. That said, I would hate to lose an entire team of promising Pathfinders. If you must, use this as a bargaining chip...” he says as he hands over the scroll case, “Nearly anyone you meet will look at you more favorably if you surrender it, but doing

so would certainly risk our friend’s cover. I’m giving it to you because I trust your discretion in the matter.”

Sense Motive DC 20:
You note that Lady Morilla betrays a moment’s discomfort at Muesello’s notion of exchanging the scroll tube for freedom, but she quickly suppresses her dismay.

The scroll tube contains an unsigned letter that describes many of the mission’s details as well as a formal request signed by the Arch-Exarch Gregorius to admit the bearers to the Kitharodian Academy’s rare books collection. The letter also explains that the Pathfinders can find the hidden entrance to the archive by studying honor, courage, and glory.

You have a day to prepare, if you would like to shop for anything before heading to the library, feel free to do so. The two keys to success are completing the investigation in the two hours allotted, and in avoiding detection and leaving no trace.

Sensing that there are no further questions, Venture-Captain Muesello reminds you to report to the Kitharoden Academy at the appointed time tomorrow. "You want to be sure to get there right before the performance begins; you can take advantage of the distraction."

He sends you on your way, but Lady Morilla asks Hudor to remain behind briefly.

Hudor:

“Most of Taldor’s shortsighted nobles have not deigned to aid the Mendevian Crusade in any significant way, and as you may know, I am raising an independent army to march to the Worldwound and reignite the glory that Taldor once commanded. All goes well, but the demons act more quickly than we can recruit. We need something—some kind of holy relic or the like—that the noble and the brave can rally behind. This nation has led countless crusades, but the public records contain little reliable information. If you find clues about such an object, record everything that you can about it so that we might use it for the good of Avistan.”

Colloquially called “the Kith,” this bard college is the largest in the city, and ranks among the largest on Golarion. Although this grand academy allows all souls that wishes to enroll the chance to prove themselves, students must adhere to a code of education and rigorous self discipline. Each department advisor sets forth the graduation requirements for their students.

The Kitharodian Academy sits atop the northern cliffs of Oppara and has an impressive view of the Porthmos River valley. The school boasts architecture as lovely as its music, and elegant domes, towers, and columns adorn the principle music hall. On the night of the performance, mirror-focused lanterns and dancing lights illuminate the structure, making the academy a radiant beacon of Taldor’s greatness.

Meeting each other just outside the Academy, you have no difficulty pushing your way through the crowds who have gathered for tonight's performance. Commoners and nobility alike mingle at the entrance, with ushers directing them into the increasingly crowded music hall.

It is not clear to you where the library you seek is.

Leaning in the corner of the bait shop's back room is a tall heavily built, slightly gray/green tinted Half orc, his tusks sharpened to look like fangs and his eyes and face often painted in black Kohl to give himself a demonic visage to strike fear in his foes. His black hair, peppered with gray hangs loose and unkempt, with bits of seaweed tied amongst it in a seemingly haphazard fashion.

He wears a dark gray robe over heavily corded muscles, which is stained with seawater over which he wears a battered but well made breastplate, acid etched gray to look like the scales of a great fish, with matching vambrces enclosing the lower parts of his arms. Dark gray baggy trousers, again sea-stained are tucked into heavy well-worn Black leather boots, his hands are gauntleted in fingerless scales to match his breastplate. Around his neck sits a roughly carved Leaf with a droplet on the end.

A large wooden shield, chipped and battered from use is slung over his back and a gleaming, dark Iron Trident is belted at his waist, a silvered dagger on the opposite hip. A small Raptor sits at their heels, gnawing on an old bone to keep it occupied.

"Ah'm Samildanach, Cleric of Gozreh, nice to meet'cha" he says in a gruff voice as the report is finished.

Unable to find anyone to help, you all begin exploring the halls of the Academy yourselves. Eventually, you find some signs that point you the right way, and you stumble upon a nearly empty library.

A young man introduces himself. "Hello, I'm Tobias; I'm the librarian on duty. How can I be of assistance?" You can hear the opening theme of the performance ringing faintly through the halls behind you.

"we have permission to look through certain rare tomes in the library. " Filla answers while showing the scroll containing the formal request signed by the Arch-Exarch Gregorius to admit the bearers to the Kitharodian Academy’s rare books collection.

If this is the wrong scroll that spills the beans, Fillia will not do that.....Just in case.

Tobias reads over the letter you show him and nods. "The library closes in just a couple of hours; all visitors will have to leave once the performance in the music hall ends."

Tobias leads you through a small lounge area, escorting you through a set of doors. A large table stands at the center of this room, whose walls are lined with rows upon rows of inset shelves. The set of double doors is the only way into the room, and two stone statues depicting bearded scholars with open books are the only other decorations.

"If you need anything, don't hesitate to come and get me." he says before leaving you to yourselves, closing the doors behind him.

Most of the books in this section are workbooks of famous composers, original copies of musical treatises, and withered manuscripts describing various operatic traditions from beyond the Taldan empire. Despite their academic value, the texts here are of little use in completing the Pathfinders’ mission. The both of the statues hold blunt styluses—sometimes used to help read old, fragile texts—that point to their books, but only the western statue’s book actually any words: a column of words that reads “Innovation, respect, knowledge, courage, integrity, honor, excellence, glory” in that order.

Nodding thanks to the librarian, Samildanach takes the opportunity to take their courtier’s coat iff and hang it off the back of a chair, feeling better for the loss of the restrictive garment. ”Right, that’s much better!” the Privateer remarks as they scratch their raptor behind the ear. ”Hmm that wall over there looks like our route in, and these statues have the right words on em, any ideas?”

They move over to the Statues snd begin examining the words for clues.

also, GM I think that Fillia did not intend to hand over the scroll. There is only one scroll, yes? and although it doesn't "spill the beans" I think the spirit of the comment was to not hand it over if it was the special one

I can't tell that we got an introduction to this woman. This was the first post that mentioned her. Is she a merchant, for instance?

The Ulfen merchant prince introduces himself as Ēoswulf, son of Gērmwyn. He seems mostly thoughtful during the briefing, and opts not to get any special clothing. My breastplate is good enough for my other merchant deals; it is good enough for a stuffy library.

He doesn't know his way around (see knowledge local check above) but he quickly finds a helpful local (see diplomacy check above). Whether the others pay enough attention to him for that to save the party any time isn't clear (I don't know if the GM will retcon the roll in). Once at the library he steps forward, "Greetings! My friends and I are here to do some reading. The texts are not usually available to common guests such as us, but with the library so empty I think a clerk as helpful as yourself could let us in, eh?"
diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
(hopefully that roll is good enough to settle any issues with retconning the use of the scroll?)

Once inside, Ēoswulf grabs a random book off the shelf and sets his illusion up as if it is reading it, then looks at the statues. After thinking for a moment with his hand on his chin, he tries to see if he can move or remove the stylus to touch the given words in the given order (Honor, Glory, Courage).

If that doesn't work, he tries touching each of the words with his own hands, and looking closely for any oddities about them.

Ēoswulf, Lady Morilla is the head of the (then) Taldor (now Sovereign Court) faction within the Pathfinder Society; she was present with the Venture-Captain through the entire briefing. And yes, Tobias only read the scroll granting you permission; you still have possession of both that scroll and the more secret one.

Ēoswulf realizes that the right arm of the western statue can be rotated up or down by several degrees, allowing one to shift the word that the statue’s stylus points at. Shifting the stylus so that it points at the words Honor, Glory, and Courage in that order does indeed open the secret door. Beyond is a 15' passage that leads to a spiral staircase down.

Remember that--in addition to finding the information that you seek about the Shining Crusade--there are two main elements of success in this scenario: completing on time (you have 2 hours) and avoiding detection. With regards to the latter, in addition to setting up your illusions here, please point out anything your character will be doing as a general rule while exploring the library below. I will get that map up and move the action down there later this afternoon.
