While the others spread out through the building, Azu can be certain that no creature of significant size has passed within his ability to critically examine the ground. Unfortunately, even as they draw closer to the tower, nobody can see what lurks high above. That is, until Vilkik hurries forward in eagerness and trips. Staring into the dimly illuminated rafters, she believes that she sees movement. A few blinks later, she is certain that a swarm of spiders is descending the wall. She thinks that maybe these are the offspring of the two very large spiders on the tower ceiling thirty feet above her.

Inside the dashed octagon--the tower--the ceiling is 30 ft above the floor. Outside of the octagon, the ceiling is 10 ft above the floor. At the outer edge of the octagon, at least one swarm and one spider will be in line of sight. Too see them all at the moment, you'd need to be inside the octagon/tower.

Lleylo throws caution to the wind and quickly moves to the edge of the tower, to try and get a better feeling for where all the enemies are.

1 stride. I only see "swarm 1" on the map at the moment. Once I see a big spider and know where it is, I could throw a bomb at it to finish my turn.

Lleylo sees innumerable spiders to choose from once he makes it to the base of the tower. However, he chooses to throw a flask of alchemist's fire at one the size of a large dog. He's not certain that he would have hit the agile creature in the best of circumstances, but the distance did not help. The flasks breaks beside the spider, merely licking it with fire. The hundreds of baby spiders around it, however, suffer considerably as dozens of them whistle and pop in the heat.

Guntram takes a martial stance at the base of the tower.

Everything is 30 ft up on the ceiling until it appears on the map's floor.

The minimally singed giant spider aims its spinnerets at Vilkik and fires a wad of gooey material. The mass lands just to the side of her. It then descends on a strand of silk, it's eight arms reaching for her.

Vilkik stands amidst the swarming spiders, several of them tumble off of her and back into the swarm on the ground. Bonezz brings the blade of his horsechopper down into the middle of the swarm, momentarily scattering the tiny arachnids--it certainly doesn't seem the most effective way of killing them but it's not useless.

Hundreds more spiders descend from the ceiling and wash over Guntram, Lleylo, and Bonezz. None of the spiders manage to find exposed goblin-flesh on Bonezz yet. A second dog-sized spider descends on a rope of spider silk and tries to bite Vilkik.

Retcon: Numerous spiders simply fall dead as they are exposed to the ghostly aura surrounding the horsechopper.

Jorgen splatters spiders left and right with his staff. There are now more dead spiders on the floor than live spiders. Despite that, there are still many spiders. Due to some trick of bad luck, Jaarl's paws slam down on spaces that clear of spiders just before he strikes.

Guntram's body resists the spider's venom with the expected dwarven fortitude. Unfortunately, he has a great deal of trouble connecting with the agile spider. Lleylo manages to nick it, but his follow up strike bounces off its hard carapace, and his last, desperate swing fails to come close.

Vilkik pokes her rapier through the spider's carapace, spilling gooey brown ichor. Her second strike is less accurate.

Bonezz sweeps his ghostly horsechopper through the swarm, leaving a swath of dead spiders. Those spiders that remain scatter into the cracks and crevices around the tower. He swings at the blue spider, stealing it of what life it had, and then finds himself out of range of any other enemies.

Vilkik feels the venom from dozens of spider bites coursing through her blood and wracking her body with pain. It takes a long moment before she can catch her breath.

With the spiders dealt with, you can search the ruined lodge more thoroughly. In the tower where the spiders nested, you find a mummified corpse wrapped in spider silk. Most of the corpse's belongings have deteriorated with age, but there is a single crystal vial clutched in its dry, thin fingers.

The rest of the ground floor proves to have little of intellectual or monetary value. However, you do find a door to a cellar below. The wood of the door breaks apart as you try to open it. The lock on the inside clatters down the dirt steps, useless in preventing your access. The light filters in through the random holes in the floor. Under a larger hole is the crushed body of a giant spider under a pile of rubble. Searching the cellar reveals a large iron chest covered by fallen wood.

The iron chest is not locked. Inside you find a shortsword with a potency rune affixed to it, a 6-inch-tall golden statue of a woman with outstretched hands, flowing hair, and a chilling expression on her face, a journal, and a folio with yellowed document inside.

Read the Journal:
The text describes a cult of the Golden Daughter that tried to gain control of the region. Napsunar and her agents vehemently fought against the cult but unfortunately most the villagers were seduced to join the flock of the Golden Daughter, who claimed to be a god made flesh. While the Golden Daughter did manifest strange powers, Napsunar was skeptical of her godly origin. The Golden Daughter led her followers on a pilgrimage toward the west and Napsunar apparently lost track of her; at least, no records specifying the Golden Daughter’s fate are included in the journal. Napsunar abandoned the lodge when the village begun to die out due to hostile environment rife with bandits and monsters. The villagers that were left behind settled nearer to the Sellen River. One of the Pathfinder agents, Pavo Crispin, found a wife among the villagers and stayed behind with her when the other agents left with Napsunar.

Azu determines that he's slightly more skilled than the barbarian and offers his services. First Azu tries to find any natural herbs nearby.

Fine wit me. Guntram says. He sets down his equipment on a sturdy section of the floor and leans against it. Took a little knock but I should be able to patch myself up.

The evening passes uneventfully as you camp in the well concealed if cold cellar of the old Pathfinder lodge. In the morning, you make the short, damp hike down to the village. On the way, Bonezz spies a bit of cord sticking out of a hollow in a tree. Going over to inspect it, he finds a leather sack tied shut with cord. Inside are several coins, gems, and a scroll case that turns out to be empty.

Continuing onward, you find three ramshackle buildings still stand upright on a patch of slightly drier ground. The largest one looks like a barn with a silo tower. The doors have long since rotted away. A flickering light of a campfire spills out of the openings of the barn.

The ground here is swampy (difficult terrain).

As you approach the buildings, you see a burly, red-haired sitting on top of the remains of a wagon. He hops down when he spies you.

"Hey!" he calls out to you. "Who're you all?"

"Help?" he looks down at the ruined wagon and laughs heartily. "Lass, if you can fix this wagon, you are a genie. I'm Chops. My friends and I are living here until we're ready." He looks over at Bonezz. "Maybe. But it'll have to wait until after my friends and I are done with what we're planning. Too busy for joy or fun. Got to keep our heads clear."

As you talk with Chops, you occasionally catch a glimpse of other people moving between buildings.

"Maybe you could," Chops says with a smile. He hops down off of the mossy pile of wood that was once a wagon and picks up his crossbow, which he rests casually over his shoulder. "You'd have to meet the boss first. I'm not the boss. We're freedom fighters. Ever heard of the Firebrands? We're part of that. The people around here aren't too happy with the king. He ought to go the way of Waike. You know?"

He waves you toward the barn. "Come on. Let's hang out by the fire, and I can explain some more."

Before I am inundated with Perception checks, detecting deception is a passive action. The deceiver rolls Deception vs. the target's Perception DC (10 + Perception modifier). None of you get the sense that Chops is being anything but forthright.
