I believe I've acted within the bounds of charm - as a matter of fact, one of the reasons Orielle hasn't transformed is that I agree if it were apparent that she's a demon, the spell should be broken.
Regarding the threats, the spell description is written from the point of the caster - in this context, any act by Orielle ("you") or her ("your") apparent allies that threatens Kahwen or Mykel ("the charmed person") breaks the spell. The demons have also been intentionally avoiding Kahwen or Mykel for exactly for this reason - I agree the spell would be immediately broken if (spoiler: when) they do. Specifically, the spell is not broken if her allies attack the charmed person's allies - although I have been giving out the extra saves because I agree that's mildly/moderately silly.
If you think it's out of bounds to ask Mykel and Kahwen to move around, I can make the opposed Charisma checks to "convince [them] to do anything [they] wouldn’t ordinarily do." Mykel and Kahwen can still attack Zyesha and the Alu-Demon, which are clearly enemies, but Orielle's going to keep insisting that she's innocent and she loves Kahwen, and I think that if Orielle were who she says she is, the party would ordinarily take some effort to defend her.
Palakar Macridi |
All right. It's a spell that's open to a lot of interpretation, and people have been arguing over it for years. I still think that her allies threatening the charmed person's allies should break it, but I'll accept the ruling on that.
But I still think Mykel should have the +5 on his save for being threatened by the other monsters. Not in the AoO sense of threatend, but as in "these guys look hostile to me"
GM Watery Soup |
Here's where I come from:
1. I am pro-fun.
2. I am not a rules expert.
3. This is the end of "Orielle"'s story. She doesn't show up in any future scenarios (as far as I can tell) ... and she really deserves to die.
Within the bounds of the rules, as written or as intended or as interpreted, I'm trying to put a fitting end to this story. I'm not trying to exploit a loophole in the rules so I can TPK the party or anything.
Mykel can have +5, make the save, and take his AoO. Also, Kahwen can have haste retroactively if it was reasonable for Elado to understand Kahwen can't really hurt the party. I'm fine with a lot of the grey area. As you can tell from the fact that I've just been giving people re-saves, I still feel bad for Vaylen basically missing out a whole fight due to paralysis, not because there was some doubt about the fight's outcome, but because it's just not fun. It was hard for me to hand out a re-save with paralysis, but I've been using my prerogative as GM to give out re-saves with charm.
Regarding the larger picture, the written tactics give Orielle a chance (mandate, even) to flee. The written tactics also don't give Kahwen (a melee fighter) a chance to stab her in the neck with a fork. Those both sound pretty un-fun to me.
Kahwen |
I'm also ok with the way things have been being played. Kahwen is pretty trusting and would want to believe Orielle so the magical nudge could be enough to make him do so.
GM Watery Soup |
Okay, let's let the RNG settle this. A stacked RNG (Orielle has a Charisma of 31), but an RNG nonetheless. Posted into Gameplay.
GM Watery Soup |
Well, that ended a lot quicker than I thought it would.
You can take a victory lap on the alu-demon if you'd like. Its AC is 18 (T 12 FF 16) and has DR 5/CI or good. It has about 3 hits worth of hit points.
I will post a wrap-up tomorrow.

As I just wrote a few hours ago, this is pretty much the end of the storyline. There's another scenario, Day of the Demon, that nominally follows up on clearing out the mansion Damian gave to the Blakros family. But I purchased the scenario and found it underwhelming (it's basically a dungeon crawl). I'm not enthusiastic about running it.
Instead, I'm interested in running a new storyline. Valais Durant, head of the Radiant Oath faction in PFS2, has a 3-scenario backstory in PFS1. Three of my PFS2 characters are Radiant Oath and I'd like to know about her. I have the scenarios written down somewhere but the levels are a bit awkward for character continuity - it's a 3-7, then a 5-9, then a 1-5, so you'd need a 4.2 or 5.0 to play all three with the same character.
If you're interested, I'll probably start after Outpost (I'm GMing two one-shots for Outpost). You can post here or PM me and I'll save a slot for you.
Melea Shemroe |
Melea has played Day of the Demon! I didn't remember the connection.
As for the three-parter, I think I've played the last scenario in it (on another character). I'd be okay with playing the first two if you didn't mind my dropping out after. I'll take a short bit to think about whether I want a reserved seat.
Vaylen Eldarun |
Do you have the scenario codes? I need to check and see if I've played them all already or not.
Palakar Macridi |
Well, that was super disapointing. Watery Soup, I sent you an idea.
The Valais arc is very good, and the first is one of my favorite games. I've already used a replay on it though, so I can't join you on it. I might join you for the middle one though, with one of the characters who's already played the first. (Summoner)
Vaylen, it's 5-09, 7-17, and 9-06.
I've actually made my own art for some of them - I'll send it to Watery Soup.
Mykel Therinor |
and i don't have a toon i can use for those in that spread....maybe i can use a pregen...and apply them after...i have a few that are close to hitting 4.2
GM Watery Soup |
There's plenty of time. I'll PM anyone who expresses interest in late May or early June.
GM Watery Soup |
Valais Durant storyline: 5-09 Traitor's Lodge (GL), 7-17 Thralls of the Shattered God (SC), 9-06 Shores of Heaven (SC).
Melea Shemroe |
Huh, not sure how I didn't remember Thralls tied in. I've played that one too. I might back out if I'm only going to do the scenario, but probably not. This way I'll get it under my belt.
GM Watery Soup |
As I found when I looked through Day of the Demon, some of these scenarios are very tenuously linked. Tancred Desimire is mentioned in the scenario text, but basically the BBEG is the second in command that he left behind to clean up. Desimire doesn't get any comeuppance for attempting to MURDER AN ENTIRE WEDDING RECEPTION. It's a fine scenario, just not the one I want to run.

Can you guys post day job rolls?

I'm finding the same is true with the saga I'm running. The one you're playing in currently in particular is pretty tenuously connected to the theme.

Kahwen or Palakar, maybe you can help me out with this: my Chronicle will go to Diazepane, who's locked right now. He was level 5.2 when he was locked - either that future Chronicle or this current one will bring him to 6.0. Do I apply this Chronicle mid-adventure and get a level 6 Chronicle later (I presume I don't level him up mid-adventure, that seems disruptive), or should I fill out this Chronicle as if he were level 6 and apply it when he is unlocked?
(The actual numbers don't change at all - he'll have an extra rank in alchemy, which means he rolled a 37, but it ends up being the same gold; he'll also be OOT either way. But it'd be nice to know what the rules are.)

Kahwen, Mykel, and Elado: your Chronicles are uploaded here.

My understanding is that you would apply the chronicle for GMing AFTER the chronicle for the game you're in (also sorry it seems to be taking so long.)
And my chronicle sheet looks good.

In first ed, GM's don't get Day Jobs (unless you have the Extra Hours boon). I'm not sure what you mean by Locked In.
Day job: Perform Oratory, with my own Theater!
Orate: 1d20 + 22 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 22 + 1 = 24
Ah, but I am an expert Entrepreneur, so I can reroll dayjobs with dice under 10!
reroll: 1d20 + 22 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 22 + 1 = 36
Eh, I'll take it. 100 gold
Vaylen Eldarun |
Day Job: Craft (Alchemy)
Craft (Alchemy): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Works for me.

FYI Im homeschooling today and maybe tomorrow so I may not finish the other Chronicles until Wednesday.

I have a 4.1 character, so not exactly 4.2 as needed unfortunately. Shame too, it's a really amazing Samsaran Investigator/Questioner build that's an amazing skill monkey and does Studied Strike with Rays.

there's a TON of online VTT games happening these days since the world is on global lockdown.

Mine is 4 years old and I still had to work from home.
I learned one thing - Neither my boss nor my kid was pleased with the amount of work I did, today.
Vaylen Eldarun |
I've been exclusively working from home for 10 years, so despite how crazy the world is right now work is fairly normal right now, though the presence of my kids is a slight complication.
Melea Shemroe |
Seattleite here. I'm the only one in my housing unit to go out to work, and that's only sometimes. It gets me both a lot of requests to pick things up and some people shying away from whatever I bring in.
GM Watery Soup |
I just rewrote all of my kids' math word problems to be Pathfinder and Minecraft-themed to stave off boredom for one more day. :)
Chronicles for Melea, Vaylen, and Palakar are uploaded to the same link above.
Let me know ASAP if anything needs to be fixed. Otherwise, I'm going to report the game and mark it inactive.
Melea Shemroe |
Everything looks good here, thanks again!
Palakar Macridi |
Technically "Concern for Liberty" should be crossed off for anyone not Liberty's Edge, and "Driven by Glory" should be crossed off for anyone not Sovereign Court; but it's fine - I can cross it off myself.
Not sure if the influenced people is supposed to be a collective you or an individual you, which would change if any get crossed off. But I can't find any instruction either way, so I'll take it.
GM Watery Soup |
I found the instructions unclear too, so I used the protocols more clearly stated in Blakros Matrimony - the collective Influence for PP, individual Influence for boons.
If everyone has their sheets, I'm going to report and mark this scenario inactive - my Campaigns tab is getting horrendously cluttered from all my current campaigns plus all my Outpost campaigns. I will probably still check this thread manually but infrquently - please PM if it's urgent.
Also, just so it's clear, this will be reported under my own PbP event and not through OSP - the recruitment was not open to the public, so this scenario doesn't qualify for OSP.
