After eating a bit, healing up, resting some, in the dreary clearing, near Dragh's body... you do see that the blood dripping out of the blind wolves' bodies is like alchemical soup, that reeks of acid.

After nearly four hours, you get all ready, and drop back on all fours, crawling through the muck under the tree, and down into the den, with the foul stench of wet wolf and dying.

In the cramped den, lit by the shimmering pool of oily water, next to the pool, between the gnarled and dying tree roots, is the rotting carcass of what must have once been a truly gigantic wolf.

All but Giggett, because of the low ceiling in this chamber, have to move slowly and carefully.
And all four of you must bob and weave amidst the roots and moss hanging from the ceiling.

You enter carefully, your eyes watering from the little smoke that is left.

You are ready for what might lay in waiting--

King in Thorns slideshow!

--but other than the dead Den Mother, the Giant Female Wolf, nothing is down there.
And she is dead-dead.
Lying before the glowing, oily pool in the center of the den.

The pool does not seem particularly deep, except in the center, where, if you look into it, maybe with some more light, you see that... yes: it is fed by a natural spring that wells up from deep below the ground.

Human Cleric 3| HP 32/32 AC 16| F +7 R +6 W +11| Speed 25| Perception +9 | Focus 1/1 | Heros Point 1

Tamerius tries to find the source of the blight. Is the corpse of the giant wolf responsible? Or something else...

Casting read aura he tries to find and to understand.

Giggett, thanks to her darkvision, tries to look inside the pool (without putting her head in) if she sees something. Analysing the spring from here if it's possible.

Tamerius spends some minutes casting a spell over and over-- but he does not seem to detect anything.

Giggett sees that the spring disappears down into the depths.
The water gives off an acrid smell.

Sitril walks into the cave and takes a look at the surrounding.

He looks baffled at Giggett winking and giving signs to the universe, believing that no one noticed :P

He takes a look inside the pond trying to assess how deep is it and if it is an underground source of water or does some river feed this.

I would like to use my Terrain Expertise, as I would believe that working in the underground can give you some information about underground water systems.

Then he turns towards the big wolf trying to see what happened to it. He tries to understand if the wolf died out of poor health, and what actually happened here. Are there big paw marks on the ground? Is there an entrance big enough for it to leave? Are there marks of digging that would show that the wolf tried to get out but was traped?

Survival check?

He walks around the cave trying to assemble all of the small marks into a compelling story.

King in Thorns slideshow!

For Giggett:
When studying the pool, you recognize that this water is tainted by something unnatural.
Maybe putting your head in... or at least touching it, would bring excitement to a boring life?

Sitril sees this is a natural hollow, under the gigantic old tree.
The tree grew on this natural spring, that wells up from deep down.
Looking into the pool, and the hole at the bottom that feeds it from the source, Sitril feels that the water-tunnel goes rather deep, and that it collects groundwater. It is a deep taproot. But probably not fed by a river.

For Sitril:
You can make a Survival check w. the +1 bonus

Looking at the wolf, and around the den, taking some time and checking out the tracks and details--
--Sitril sees the truly gigantic wolf must have died of exhaustion, and maybe some kind of long term acid poisoning.
Seeing the lay out, and little nests in the corner, this was a she-wolf, and she gave birth to a lot of wolves.
The two mutants were here males. Maybe siring the offspring. For sure, tending to her.

There are big paw marks on the ground.
She could have pushed her way and squeezed out the entrance-- but it is obvious this never happened.
No signs of the big mother of the den trying to get out.

There are carcasses and food that must have been for her.
Not touched recently: it seems the blind hairless wolves did not eat.

NG Male Dwarf (Strong-Blooded) Barbarian 3 | 25 ft. | Active Conditions: --- HP 42/55(+6 temp) | AC 20 | F +10 R +7 W +9 | Perc +9 (Darkvision) | Stealth +7 |

Giving signs to GM:

Survival with +1: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 1 = 13

Sitril looks at the signs and says:

"The big wolf that is here is a she. And she gave a lot of offspring, the food brought here was for here as the two mutants didn't seem to eat anything. The mother wolf died of exhaustion probably due to some long term acid poisoning. But that is only my guess for now..."

Says the dwarf.

King in Thorns slideshow!

For Sitril:
Sitril looks at the pool, but is somehow a little wary and does not want to go near it... but, then--
If you use decide to use a Hero Point...? Then open the following spoiler:
Spoiler:
--heroically Sitril kneels down and peers into it.
1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 1 + 1 = 25 (extra +1 from my Glyph for Hero Points that I give)
Sitril recognizes that this water which gives off an acrid smell is tainted by something unnatural.
Since he kneeled down close, after a little observation, that the unnatural are actually chemicals, and that they are mutagenic in nature.
They certainly must cause those who drink them to change, probably at a terrible price.

Female Gnome (Umbral) | HP 38/38 | 1 Hero Point | Perception +7 (Darkvision); +8 against traps (Trapfinder); +11 against lies | AC 20 | Fort +7; Ref +10; Will +7 | Hands: Shortbow + Potion of Barkskin

Giggett seems sad:

"The water's corrupted. But I don't know exactly why or how. Unfortunately, Dragh is no more. He would have loved to analyze it... Anyway, there's some corruption, and it comes from the water. Which may explain the pockets of corrupted nature every now and then. Maybe we should find the underground stream to understand what happens to it. My main concern is that it can get into Plaguestone's well and corrupt the citizens. Maybe we should advise them to only drink alcohol for a while."

Giggett empties her waterskin and fills it with the corrupted water. She then writes "Don't drink" on it with a chalk.

"The ranger spoke of another biggest corrupted place. Maybe we should go in there. After taking a big break, maybe, we have lost quite some resources in this fight. Tamerius, do you have some scrolls left?"

King in Thorns slideshow!
Quote:
Maybe we should advise them to only drink alcohol for a while.

You hear Sir Lawren's soul, in the distance: "Nooo! Not now!"

___________________________

As Giggett plunges the waterskin into the water, and some gets onto her hands, she again smells that acrid odor, and she notices it has an odd, oily texture.
Just touching the water, carefully as she does to get the least on her, already leaves the skin feeling... prickly.

Dear DM, Giggett being good at disguising people, can I make a little bit of work on Dragh so we won't bring a disgusting mummy in town? I just want him to be presentable (I can say that?).

You finish looking around the den, and the grove, and then tend to Dragh's body--
Good idea Natsume!
Unless someone took Thanatopractice Lore, why not roll Medicine and Disguise, to shape the body up and that put makeup and cotton in the cheeks and whatever.

--before heading out of the clearing... whereupon you meet Noala.

"How did you fare?
No more stragglers came sneaking out. Nothing at all.
I am eager to hear what you discovered..."

After sharing what you found--
(I imagine, if not, tell me)
--she says she agrees that the water must be the source of the pollution.
"But how the water is being contaminated? That is still a mystery.
I mean, I know of no caves nearby that contain access to any significant source of water. There are no underground rivers..."

Seeing that you are to go back to the village, she says:
"When you are done with your rites, I suggest that, with no other obvious lead, unless you have one?... I thing they we should travel to the oldest, largest blight in these woods.
This will require a one-day journey through unforgiving wilderness.
If you agree, I will accompany you to Etran's Folly, to pay respects for this one who came from so far yet gave his life trying to help these lands... though filled with egotistical village idiots."

"You should keep your grudge against the village for yourself. If we want to get rid of this corruption, we need the effort of everyone, we are not strong enough to be divided. After the rites and a good night of sleep, we will accompany you to the big blighted area."

"Yes, you will. No one from the village. I have no grudges with them. Just sadness they cannot even see that something is rotting the ground beneath them. But that outsiders fight... and die, for them."

To GM:
Nope, I don't want to use my hero point. With the way how the fights go, it would be risky for me to not keep it :(

"Let us bury Dragh, replenish some resources and head to the oldest blight."

King in Thorns slideshow!

With Dragh very well prepared by Giggett with Natsume's help, you all carry him back to the village, where you arrive in the evening.

(all will have Healed up ; you may make any preparations and purchases you wish ; and then, the next day, bury Dragh, before leaving the day after with Noala)

Dragh’s was a good companion and a loyal one, that’s I need to know... and we don’t need “saint”. We need people able to do the job.

Says Tamerius while working on Dragh.
Medicine: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

He also constructs a stretcher with some old wood branch to help transport Dragh’s corpse to the town.

Natsume stops him before he gets too far with it; "Fallen comrades are brought back on shields," she explains, laying down her own tower shield and loading Dragh onto it.

Her heart sinks; he's no longer nearly as heavy as he was in life, given all the blood loss.

I don't have anything to buy, but I think Tamerius may buy scrolls of Heal as he used some. Then, the next day, I let Tamerius lead the ceremony.

Giggett will also spend some time with Noala. Speaking a bit about everything to make a good impression on her, but also to know what she has seen of the blight.

King in Thorns slideshow!

With the good cosmetic work already done, Tamerius consolidates all by replacing bones and making the skin better.

You arrive in the village with Dragh on the shield, and all are very impressed.
The villages bow their heads and respect a moment of silence.

As Tamerius prepares the funeral of Dragh, the caravan people offer to have Bort laid to rest beside him.

During that time Giggett speaks with Noala but learns nothing else than she has already said about the blight.

"Deep in the forest, to the north of town, is a blight larger and older than any other.
I became aware of it only once the blight had spread.
I monitored the blight’s growth, but I have never fully explored this area, as it is home to many ferocious predators.
But with you I believe we can explore this place. Maybe the heart of all this evil?"

Tamerius asks the two dwarf brothers tending the new church to help him in the ceremony.

He needs to show to the town inhabitants how a strong Faith could help reinforcing cohesion of the village. He want Asmodeus’s Faith strong and flourishing in this forgotten and forsaken place. A strong Faith is the ciment of all society.

King in Thorns slideshow!

Metmon and his son Edfur have been working away on the church, and have made some nice red robes for Tamerius and themselves.

There also is a first convert from town... the Mayor himself!

Metmon whispers to Tamerius: "I told him Asmodeus would make the turnip fields rot, and sheep return to green pastures..."

But the double ceremony, for Bort and Dragh, both to be buried side by side, behind the old standing stone, close to the new church, is very nice, and nearly all the village appears.
Phinick hands baskets of wild, and turnip, flowers to all: "To throw on caskets!"

All look to Tamerius to officiate, and make a speech.

Sitril attends the ceremony. He is silent and nostalgic, keeping himself somewhere to the side. He even could have groomed a bit his hair and beard, but it can be easily omitted as it didn't improve his looks much.

I was wondering if I want to replenish my stock of alchemist fire, but I still have one so let us go and see. My 2 potions of healing are still intact so I think we are fine. We might consider equipping everyone in a sling and bullets in case any pierce resistant monsters occur.

Citizens! I'm please to see so many of you coming today.
This is not an usual day for me as I'm here to celebrate the life, and the sacrifice, of one of my most esteemed companion, Dragh.
Dragh was not just some dwarf passing through this village. To his clan he was a trusted member, to his family, he was a son, a brother, a cousin. To me, he was a loyal companion, a magician of great potential, a friend. To you, he was a stranger, may be a murderer...
But, despite this status he decides to be a loyal subject of this community. He accepted his duty to help, to find the real murderer of late Bort. He showed Confidence were lesser men or women could have showed cowardice. Fire burned bright in his heart.
Thanks to his high intellect he Tricked his, our ennemies to show their true colors... He tries to free you from the Tyranny of those in the shadows, trying to punish a village for something done years ago.
He has done that, for you, for this village. To give you the liberty to continue your life.
But, at the end. He gave more than any of us... He gave what is the highest sacrifice of all. He gave his LIFE... for YOU!

As he says his last word, a tear is running down his cheek. He pauses for a few seconds before continuing.

FOR YOU! Yes.
He will be avenged, HIS sacrifice will be remembered. I will dedicate this church, the first church that this village see after so many years of neglect, to HIM.
Dragh's Church. Blessed by Asmodeus. May his Fire burned away your Sins. May the Contract between you and Him make your village thrive through the years to come.

Make Dragh's sacrifice worthy of your own life.

Make Plaguestone Great Again!

Pray for Dragh! Pray for Plaguestone, Pray for Asmodeus!

Deception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

Natsume, as one of the closest things Dragh has to "family" in Plaguestone-- which is to say, someone who spent about a week longer with him than anyone who actually lives in the village-- stays near the front.

She looks a little uncomfortable with all the religious talk, but stays quiet, and helps with getting the pair of them into the ground. She's good with that sort of work: digging is one step in farming, after all, and she's seen some of that in her youth. A pair of caskets is just a bigger couple of holes.

Tamerius, I love your speech and not because you speak of Dragh that I feel personally connected with. Great RP! You get 1 Farol point! Good job!

Sitril does not know how to behave in such situations, he never met Dragh, but fellow dwarf that dies is always sad news. Natsume, Giggett and Tamerius seem like honest, nice and good folks. (Tamerius being good:P) So if they liked him probably Sitril would like him as well.

His beard and hair cover most of his face which might make his feelings harder to read, but after a second of looking everyone can see that he is sad.

Happy about the effect of his speech on the villagers Tamerius looks beyond them until he finds Giggett hiding not far.

Giggett only:
You see a satisfied smile on Tamerius face who could say, “Not bad, isn’t it?’

After the villagers calm down he says.
Thank your for coming to celebrate Dragh’s sacrifice my children, now it’s time for each one of you to mourn and to think about your actions and how you could help this Church to thrive and your village to grow with it.
Go my Children, Go under Asmodeus’ blessing.

Once the villagers are gone, Tamerius asks Medmon and Edfur to etch “Dragh’s Legacy” on the church’s pediment.

To his comrades next to him he says time to prepare for tomorrow. I hope we will be as successful as today. I don’t want to bury another one.
