Magda rolls her eyes at another yelling adult, turning back to the once again wary kids "Come on, stick close to me, and we'll get off the streets as quick as possible. On the bright side, if someone comes at us they'll most likely try and kill him or that other one first."

Vera seems to panic as the adults talk about moving on once more. "Hey, wait a minute. There are still more kids! Jesse, you think you know where they're hiding, right? We can take a quick look, like we already did here!"

The now rather large group meanders back to the western shore of the deep part of the Jeggare, thankfully avoiding any mobs or other dangerous brawls. They find themselves in front of a shabby-looking warehouse on the shore. Boarded up, and ominous-looking, it appears to have been a place to store dry goods. The faded sign says “Shadrock and Sons Shipping”. The lights are off, and it appears deserted.

Note, it has only been about a half hour since you left the fishery, which is itself only 15 minutes away walking to the north.

As they walk, Jesse nods at Vera, ”I don’t really know where they’re hiding, just that they are, yah know? They’re prolly in alleys in various parts of the city, or maybe some more of the brave ones are coming back to the Fishery? That’s where we’re supposed to go at the end of the day when we are done with our work. Some should be getting back in about a little while.45 minutes from the time she said this, so maybe 40 minutes from the time you reach the abandoned warehouse.

”Most are clever enough to stay safe, but some were hurt pretty bad and couldn’t walk fast, like Carrie and Dustin.” She has a dark look about her as if she’s angry. ”With all this fighting, I don’t know if they can get back easily.”

You currently have 12/25 orphans.

Vera frowns as she learns that the remaining children were scattered. "What happened to Carrie and Dustin? Did Gaedren hurt them?"

She follows along as they arrive at the hideout, which was not too far. But she's troubled when Krovax feels the need to approach cautiously. "I'm sure that Mom's house--er, Zellara's house--would be safe." She pauses for a moment, her attention seemingly going elsewhere once more, before returning. "Course, the problem is not getting hurt on the way there."

Vera casts Dancing Lights so people can see.

I can't see anything except my own icon on Roll20, which makes me think I need to give us some light.

She will move up to check the place out and wave the others up if it seems safe.

"Let's get you all safe and steady, then I'll go out back to the fishery to wait for the others." Magpie tells Jessie, and to Vera. Once at the place Shi is a ghost before Magpie can even suggest going with, so she waits with the kids. Probably safer for all concerned.

The warehouse is about 20 feet tall, and 50 feet wide, with the wide loading door set into the west side of the building and facing the street currently closed and padlocked with a rusty lock. A 5 foot wide boardwalk extends around the north side of the building, disappearing.

As Shi explores.

Shi finds the boardwalk loops around the east side of the building leading to a 5-foot wide doorway. The boardwalk is also connected to a short pier that leads to another closed, broad loading door, this set in the east side of the building, facing the water. It is likely that whoever used this warehouse would pick up goods from the river and store them in the warehouse for later retrieval, though it does not appear to have been used in quite some time. The small entrance door is also locked with a rusty padlock. A notice, (from Rova of 4709 AR) on this small door indicates that this warehouse was seized as by the guard for failure to properly pay import duties, and an auction for the property will be held in about six months, on Moonday, the 3rd of Abadius, 4713 AR. Today is the 4th of Arastus, 4712 AR.

It appears that the bureaucracy is slow in the Midland district.

Note: on the map of Korvosa, you are halfway between S12 (the Old Fishery) and R8 (Bailer’s Retreat), which would normally only be about 10 minutes of travel, but you have been traveling a little slower with everyone in tow. Zellara’s house is H15, a little south of R8, about 20 minutes away from this warehouse with the kids, 15 or so without. I will put the current and start date of the game in the campaign tab when I can. Please check the map of Korvosa and let me know if you have questions.

Kali does not normally approve of torture, in fact she despises it. But this man was responsible for taking the thing she loved most in life from her. Whether it would satiate Krovax’s good where his heart used to be or not, Kali didn’t know. What she did know however was that there was no way she could stop him from doing anything about it even if she wanted to. This fact been repeatedly beat info her today and she wasn’t as stupid as she was pretending to be. Yeah, keep telling yourself that junkie!

Without saying anything, Kali follows Krovax into the next room and shuts the door behind her.

Magda comes back telling them all the place is empty, and in time to catch the end of the speech. "He tortured me and them for years. He'd..." the strong willed orcish girl stops and then stops again. "... He can't live. That's all. No matter what he promises, or says he knows, or anything. He needs to end."

Looking over at the other kids, she'll add "Keep them away from it, as well." she'll look up at Krovax "Please."

To the remaining non torturors "I'm headed back to the fishery to find the others. I'm quick and quiet so hopefully I'll be okay. But in case I'm not, see them to someplace safe." then smiling (and if she is not detained), she'll head back.

Later

Shi and Magda find an empty warehouse with an entrance room that looks to have been used as an office. The large room is dry and quiet. There are a few cobwebs and old crates, but nothing dangerous that she or Magda can see.

Vera puts her arm around Ollie. "Gaedren is a wicked, wicked man. Don't ever forget that. Some of you might start to miss Gaedren when things get hard, but that's a mistake. He really is a terrible creature, and we're lucky he's dead. When we find Carrie and Dustin, I can help them get better." She might be overpromising, but right know she really meant to do it.

* * *

Vera doesn't exactly look thrilled about the scary armored man's plan, but it sure didn't seem like there was anything she could do about it. "Um . . . should we try to go to sleep here?" asks Vera. She felt drained from the evening's adventures

She likes Magpie's plan, but is definitely worried. "Don't do anything stupid. You're no good to these kids if you're dead." And gives her a hug.

When it seems people are off doing their own thing, Vera sets a bedroll down in a corner of the room and lights some candles around her. On her left, she puts the box with Zellara's head. She then takes out the Harrow deck that she picked up from the fishery, shuffles the cards adeptly, and sets it down on her right. And she begins to draw cards, as she attempts to channel spiritual energy from this warehouse.

Using the Harrow Reservoir ability. A 6 is good.

Unfortunately, the cries of Hookshanks seem to be highly distracting. She sighs. It was probably best just to try and sleep. Putting away her things, she tries to muffle out the sounds of torture with her blanket, though it's very hard to ignore. Mom, are you sure it was a good idea to bring that one?

"No, and be careful of him. He is very dangerous. But I had no choice, he was one of the few with enough will and courage to assault Gaedren in his home."

Magda drops off ten kids at about 9:00 pm, and then two more at 10:30, and then finally, a last one, swaddled in a blanket, at about midnight.

Each time she goes past the impromptu torture chamber in the small office of the warehouse where Krovax and Kali are doing their vile work. Each time, Magda covers the kid's eyes as Magda goes in, until at last, she finds that door barred, and the front loading entrance open. It appears that Krovax and Kaliyah are tired of interruptions.

The gnome's screams seem to have become muffled, somewhat, though the kids still have a haunted look about them. The anarchy outside has not abated, and if anything, it has become more chaotic. But Magda has found all twenty-five of Lamb's wayward Lamms, and they are safe for the moment.

The loading door has now been unlocked when Kali and Krovax got tired of Magda bringing kids in through their pain room.

It is midnight. Everyone in the warehouse is awake.

Torture Room, Reader Discretion Advised:
When the gnome slowly comes to, he quickly realizes he is tied down with arms and legs spread wide on a table, and a gag is shoved into his mouth. Looking around, he can see Krovax sitting stoically beside a fire, several metal items resting within it.

Kali nudges Krovax and informs him that the gnome is awake, and Krovax looks at him and stands. As he walks over to him, he says ”My name is Krovax Draverian. This is Kaliyah Tatarescu. You may or may not know us. It doesn’t matter. But what does matter, is that you took the one thing in this world from us that we cared about. Her name was Vanora. You sliced her ankle tendons, then slit her throat, and let her die in a damned alleyway. That is the last image of my wife that I get to have in this world.”

When he arrives at the gnomes side, he looks down at him with emotionless eyes. ”I had such great plans for you and Gaedren when I found you. I was going to take weeks to let you suffer. I was going to remove your voice box so you couldn’t scream. Then use a heated poker to cauterize your rectum shut so your bowels would eventually burst from their own backed up waste. I was going to remove your fingers and hands knuckle by knuckle. I was going to drive you to the edge of madness, heal your wounds, and start all over again. However, it seems that fate has other plans. Time is a luxury I cannot afford...so instead we are going to have to go for maximum pain in a short time,” he says as he picks up a sledge hammer and brings it crashing down into the gnome’s thigh! He works his way down the gnome’s leg, shattering the bones all the way down, and then moves on to the remaining three limbs! By the time he is done, the gnome is tired from screaming and struggling and his limbs are useless piles of flesh!

He then walks over and picks up a board that had a large flat strip of metal on the end, red hot from sitting in the fire. He hands the makeshift handle to Kali and says ”Use it to cauterize the wounds the moment I move away. He does not get to bleed out.”

He then draws his sword and moves back to the gnome, who was sobbing weakly and hopelessly into his gag. As Krovax drew near, he struggled as best he could, but the pain was too much and his limbs were ruined. ”You started with her legs...” Krovax says as he raises his sword and cleaves the legs off the gnome at the hip joint! He then moves up and does the same with his arms, letting Kali cauterize the wounds before the gnome could lose too much blood and pass out.

Now nothing more than a torso and head, the gnome’s eyes fluttered closed as he was near unconsciousness and death. Krovax placed a hand on his chest, and a wave of healing washed over the gnome.

CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

His eyes regained some life as the wounds at the cuts closed themselves off, and his body was revitalized. He looks at Krovax, concerned and confused. ”I told you it would be a short time. But you aren’t blessed to the point that it will be that short,” Krovax growled through clenched teeth as he pulls up an old rusty knife he had found in the workshop. He then moves to the gnome’s groin, taking his private parts and makes a small incision in his scrotal sack. He slowly pulls out one testicle, and then the other, laying them out on the table between the blood patches where the gnome’s legs once were. He then takes a hammer and crushes them one by one. Moving back to the man’s genitalia, he begins to slowly filet the man’s penis with the rusty, somewhat dull knife. The fact that the gnome has nothing to speak of for limbs means he can only lay there and scream into his gag, utterly helpless.

By the time Krovax had finished his “delicate” work, the gnome was sobbing uncontrollably in agony. He had been saying something into the thick gag, but Krovax did not care enough to try to interpret. He took the knife and made a large incision that ran from the gnome’s pelvis up to just shy of his rib cage. The gnome’s eyes were wide with torment as his muffled screams grew in desperation. The gnome could only watch as Krovax reached in and retrieved a loop of the gnomes bowel, lifting it up and out of his abdominal cavity. After he had lifted a decent sized portion, he cut a loop free and moved to the gnome’s gag, undoing it as the gnome’s head hung limply from total exhaustion and near madness. As realization that he could speak once again slowly dawned on him, the gnome opened his mouth to scream, but was immediately muffled by Krovax shoving the loop of bowel into his throat. The gnome’s eyes were wide with disgust, pain, and horror, but before he could try to force the disgusting tissue from his mouth, Krovax returned the gag to it’s place, forcing the gnome to have to endure keeping that in his oral cavity as well as muffling his screams further.

Over the next hour, Krovax slowly and methodically removed various secondary organs from the gnome’s body, placing them on hooks above him along with his ruined limbs. As the gnome was nearing death and unconsciousness again, Krovax finally drew his sword and stood over his head. As the gnome looked up at him, his last conscious thought on this earth consisted of seeing Krovax holding his sword up and saying quietly ”You brought all of this on yourself. For Vanora...” before driving the blade down into his heart.

Kali can see Krovax standing at the gnome’s head, his sword’s blade reflecting the flickering firelight while the hilt seems to absorb it and drink it all in. Krovax stared straight ahead into the void, as if he was looking into Vanora’s eyes. A single tear rolled down his cheek, but his face was otherwise without expression. He stood there for several minutes before he turned to Kali and withdrew his sword from the gnome. He took a rag and cleaned the blade of the murderers blood before returning it to its sheath. He says ”Let’s get back to the others, Little Bird.”

Just after midnight, the door to the torture room opens and Krovax makes his way out with Kali in tow. He looks to Marcus and nods at him knowingly.

Badass Club:
”It is finished.”

”We have a choice ahead of us. The city is in chaos, so too much moving around isn’t safe. We either rest here for the night and hope that by daybreak the guard and marines have restored some order. Or we relocate to a safer position now. I personally think we should set some watches, get some rest, and relocate as the sun rises when it is at least easier to see any approaching threats.”

Shi would have gone with Magda if Marcus & Vera were staying behind to watch the kids, so just going to assume she tagged along since her stealth is just about as good.

Shi shrugs to Krovax's desire to torture the man and simply states "Do what you must, but I doubt it will bring you peace and will only fill the void you feel for a short time."

When Magda talks about going to find the other children and Vera and Marcus elect to watch over those at the warehouse Shi chimes in "I will come with you, safety in numbers." She will carefully follow behind Magda in her search for the children letting her deal with them but ensuring the woman and other kids are retrieved safely.

----------

Once everyone is safe Shi helps Magda tend to the children, she opens up her pack and pulls out her extra rations offering them for the children to share. She will take off her cloak so the children, and the others can fully see her lustrous fur and let the kids pet her tail if they like. In an effort to keep the kids focused on something other than Krovax's dark work she puts on a little show for them doing an exotic dance of her native lands.

Magda accepts the fox lady's quick and quiet help, appreciated it even. The dark alley's the woman's chirps of warning kept the over-anxious Magpie from stepping out too soon.

Hammers, red hot metal, burning flesh and the reek of s+$&: Magpie doesn't feel a shred of sympathy for the gnome, but as she and the fox huddle kids through that room, she does reconsider her statement that the warrior was not a monster.

Last trip, with a blinded little girl, she clucks a soft sound to the sleeping Vera just to wake her enough to slip the JayJay into her warm arms. Then she huddles as many kids together, watching the soothing dance of the other hunter. A truly odd contrast of graceful rhythms and soft curves coupled with devastating sobs and the wet sounds of torture.

"this is insane" she whispers to the city, getting a look from her cat, answering her in its own way.

When the monster is done, and suggests to stay, Magpie is already asleep.

Shi joins Magda on the rescue mission, and Carrie stays cuddled to her for the rest of the night, along with a few of the younger kids who seem to be afraid of most of the other people in the group.

5th of Arastus, 4712 AR

The night passes, mostly uneventfully. The warehouse is uncomfortable, but seemingly safe enough, as nobody attempts to get in. The kids all get to sleep eventually, if only out of sheer exhaustion. No watches were set, but it didn’t matter, except when something struck the loading door at about 3:00 am, rattling it and waking a few people up. The high windows didn’t reveal much, but there was shouting, briefly, and then silence.

In the morning, light filters through those windows, and everyone begins to stir. Dawn breaks, and you are all presented with a handful of problems. The chaos of last night has abated slightly, but smoke rises to the west and across the river, to the east, and there is still fighting in the distance.

JayJay wakes up, clinging to Vera, and whispers, ”I have to potty.” Some of the other kids look restless as well. A few say ”I’m hungry,” or ”I need a drink.” Rubbing sleep from his eyes, Ollie goes up to Magda [b]”Can we get our things from the Fishery? We don’t have much, except keepsakes, but it’d help some of the younger kids feel safe.

There is a toilet set off in a closet in the torture room (office). There is no food in here, but there are some decent-looking barrels that were once used for wine.

When you wake up, your mother whispers, ”I hope you slept well.” The Varisian accent is clear, warm, and loving. ”I have a power that I would like to use - I can show myself to everyone and we can talk about what happened. Also, you should check over the things you found for other magical items - you may not find anything, but I suspect Lamm had at least a few trinkets. You may also want to read a few of the objects - the former owners might want them back.”

In the morning, Vera wakes up as if from some sort of bizarre dream. As she looks around groggily, she finds she's really still sleeping in some strange warehouse, surrounded by children, including one who needs to go potty. Was it all real?

"Let's see if there's a potty here, JayJay." Vera takes JayJay by the hand and walks to the next room. Right into the bloody body of Hookshanks. Vera jumps in front of JayJay and covers his eyes. She hadn't really expected the body to still be there and seems shaken by the sight. "What the -- Out, out! I'm going to fix this."

Vera takes her blanket and, trying not to look, drapes it over the body. She uses a splash of magic to clean up the worst messes. And then sighs. "Okay, everyone, the way to the potty is a little better now."

* * *

Despite it all, Vera is content as she feels the warm presence of her mother. Yes, I think that's best, agrees Vera. I'd better warn everyone, though."

She gets Magpie first, and then goes to the others in their revenge party. "Hi, so, um, here's the thing. Zellara is about to make an appearance soon. I just wanted everyone to be prepared because otherwise it might be a bit surprising. But she can explain some things that I think a lot of us are wondering."

Kali follows Krovax into the room where she knows the gnome is about to have the worst and last day of his life. Kali is silent throughout the entire event, only speaking up once. She cauterizes the man's wounds to keep him alive. She fights the urge to vomit several times, turning away and staring at her feet, the wall, or anything other than the bloody mess in front of her. She tells herself she needs to be here for it, but that doesn't mean she needs to see it.

After the armored man removed the soon to be dead mans liver, pancreas or whatever the hell that thing was, she can't take it anymore. Turning to the side she bends over and wretches. Wiping her mouth she walks over and places her arm on Krovax's forearm. Trying to cut through the zeal she says softly "That's enough."

When it concludes and the man dies, Kali closes her eyes and speaks to her dead sister. It's done now. I know it doesn't bring you back, but you have been avenged Vanny. I miss you so much.

Later that night she lays awake in her cot, crying silently to herself and desperately trying to fall asleep. She thought that this would bring her peace, but all she sees now is the broken and tortured mess of the gnome that haunts her. An hour after she's assured everyone has passed out and is deeply asleep, she quietly makes her over to the pack where Marcus stuck the shiver and tries to take it.

With the dawn, Krovax seemed a new man. By the time the others locate him in the morning, they find he has shaved his unkempt beard (even if it was a crude, makeshift job), and straightened up his hair. For the first time since he had been rediscovered by Kali, he was looking like his former self. But his eyes still held their same icy chill.

”We’ve done what we gathered to do. But now the city has gone insane with the fall of the King. I don’t know what has happened, but these children are not safe until things settle down,” he says as he looks to Marcus and Kali. ”We need to find them somewhere to be watched after safely.”

He then looks to Vera and says ”You’re mother is avenged. Her spirit is likely at rest. I suggest you let it.”

Her eyes flash to the window where she sees it's fully daylight out.

"S~~*!" she exclaims, face full of panic.

"I have to go!" she declares, grabbing her pack and belongings she scrambles to get everything together.

"I'm late!" she says as she tries to get presentable before heading towards the door.

~The Previous Night~

Marcus settled down outside the torture chamber, with the kids. He didn't seem keen on joining the torture, but doesn't seem particularly upset by it either. To him, it's just a thing that this man decided to do. Perhaps it will make him a worse person, perhaps it will give him closure. Doesn't matter to Marcus. And the man dies, so as far as he's concerned, that's all that's important.

Marcus is not an empathetic caregiver for the children, but he is an attentive one. When one needs to potty he escorts them out and back, when one asks for food or water he makes sure they are supplied, when the time for sleep comes he does his best to scrounge up whatever blankets or substitute pillows he can. He doesn't indulge whining or complaining, but when the kids get so loud it's feasible for them to be heard outside he barks at them to be quieter.

So he does well in keeping them alive, but little else.

When the time for sleep comes, Marcus removes his armor but doesn't find a cot or even a pillow. He grabs a chair, plants it in front of the main entrance, and sits, crossing his arms and letting his chin lower until he drifts off to sleep.

He frowns the entire night. And he wakes up in the same position, as if he had only nodded off for a few minutes.

~Current Time~

Marcus stands up, donning his armor and going about getting food and water to the kids. Hmm, seems I might have been wrong about Krovax. May have f%%$ed up his head a bit but he was right about it not being blind fury. If I cross him I gotta make sure he dies, that's a bad way to go.

"Kali, the king is dead, and everything's turned to s!%!. You going to go back and try to restore order now?"

As if on cue, the door to the torture room opens, and in walks Zellara Esmeranda, in the flesh, so to speak. She nods at Vera, ”Indeed, I do not intend to leave my daughter alone in this world, not ever again. I will rest when she, and Korvosa are safe.” She nods at Magda, ”thank you for protecting the children.” She gestures for all to sit, shuffling the harrow deck in her hands expertly. ”I can explain some things, if you would like. But not everything.”

Yargin shifts uncontrollably at the sight of the woman.

Kaliyah:

Kali sneaks through the city as quickly as she can, pausing only a few times when she sees a monstrous creature, escaped from the Acadame, being bound by a mostly mix of professors or students. She also pauses when she sees a number of protestors near castle Korvosa brawling with each other while Hellknights watch impassively.

She quickly gets into the academy, and breathlessly rushes to her 30th day of training, the day she was to bond with her hippogriff for the first time. She was late.

She made her way up the spiral staircase to the aerie, and slipped in the back. The chief handler was going through the process of reminding the students basic things about the beasts, including that spurs were never to be used, when she paused, pulled down her spectacles and remarked in an off-handed way. ”Ms. Tatarescu, how kind of you to grace us with your presence.” On the dais with her was none other than Marcus Thalassinus Endrin calmly watching the proceedings, arms held behind his back and standing at attention. However, there was palpable tension in the air, as the events of the last evening and current day lay heavy in the collective mind.

After about thirty minutes, the flightmaster, Sergeant Destrol, sweeps her arm forward, gesturing at Marcus, ”Pay attention - this May be the last time you see a master at work.” Marcus chuckles, and holds up his hands, growing serious, ”with dedication, force of will, and character, we will all be masters. We will need to be masters. In times like this with such chaos tearing apart the city, we are needed more than ever. Along with the guard, we protect the city, and the people, regardless of the throne. Our ancestors settled here because they believed in something greater than themselves, and broke free of Cheliax because they believed a free city is greater than one subservient to a corrupt, decadent bully.” He takes a breath, ”We carry that burden with us, but if we join together in bonds of loyalty, to each other, and to our friends, these marvelous beings that fight along side us, we will see Korvosa through to better days. I ... we have all seen things, and lost friends recently. So you are needed now, more than ever. I know this is not a normal bonding speech, but... circumstances have changed. Nothing is normal any more.”

He turns to the hippogriff and approaches from the front, extending his hand out, palms up, and whispering in a strange, clicking tongue. Whatever murmuring was present in the room falls to silence, immediately, as he approaches the young hippogriff and moves his hand behind the beast’s vicious beak to the feathers on it’s head. The hippogriff is mesmerised, and turns its head to nuzzle Marcus’ callused hand. It lowers its head and folds its wings in a sign of acceptance, but not supplication. Marcus nimbly hops onto the creature, without a saddle, and whispers again. The creature clucks, and cries out, its powerful winds extending as it takes flight and makes wide circles around the aviary, spinning and twirling, doing impossible tricks with Marcus barely touching the creature.

After a few minutes, they land, and the hippogriff crouches and lets him off. When the flightmaster approaches again, it snaps at her, disconsolately, and she rolls her eyes and tosses it a mix of fish chum and oats, which it snatches out of the air. Marcus pats the creature on the flank, and turns back to everyone.

”Go, your training is nearly complete, it is time to finish your bonding. Make our city and its people proud.” He departs through a side door and the flightmaster leads the untrained hippogriff into a comfortable-looking pen.

In alphabetical order, the flightmaster goes down the list of the twenty new recruits, pointing them to the section of the aerie where the young hippogriffs have been staying. She seems to deliberately skip Kali, and returns to her last. ”Ms. Tatarescu, you get to go last, because you got here last. See that you are not late again, when summoned.” She points at one of the pens on the east side of the academy, ”Finish your tasks. I would say it was a pleasure training with you, but that would be a lie. You’re lucky we need every hand we can get. Commander Endrin is seemingly in a forgiving mood.” She salute Kali and turns her back on her, leaving Kaliyah to finish the rite of bonding with Falcor.

......

After a few hours, Atterax comes to see her, and appears pleased at her progress. Smiling, he says, ”You have changed remarkably for the better Cadet Kaliyah. I am impressed.” Falcor was eating out of Kali’s hand, and she was brushing nits out of its feathers and fur with the other. ”When you are finished, come to my office. We may have a special task for you.” He slaps her on the shoulder good-naturedly. It takes a few more hours to finish the bonding with Falcor, and is about 3:00 pm when she is free. Kali knows that once the bonding is complete, Falcor is her responsibility, so she must take him with her when she leaves the academy.

Zellara rolls her eyes, and shuffles the harrow deck that you found in the hatbox, "All will become clear in a moment. You had but to wait a few minutes and you would have understood."

"I lost my harrow deck, to one of Gaedren’s pickpockets about eight years ago. When he learned of the theft, my son Eran, took it upon himself to get the deck back. He was murdered by Gaedren’s thugs and his head and hands were returned to me in a box as a threat. I went to the Korvosan Guard, but although sympathetic, they had little additional time or resources to devote to the crime lord. Frustrated, desperate, and harboring a growing need for revenge, I took it upon myself to track down Gaedren. I sold most of our belongings, purchased a new harrow deck, and called upon the cards for aid. My latent magical skill, combined with my persistence and obsession, gave me results— yet as I would soon learn, not all harrowings point to triumph." She sighs.

"I discovered the location of Gaedren’s hideout, but was seen when I attempted to infiltrate the warehouse where he dwelled. Gaedren’s thugs grabbed me and brought me below to stand before the master. The crime lord was impressed that I’d gone through so much trouble to find him, but when I spat on him and cursed him, his anger got the better of him and he ordered me killed. He fed my body to his alligator, but he saved my head, keeping it in a box in his lair alongside my original stolen harrow deck. These cards, bloodstained and discarded, became the focus for my anguish and despair." She gestures towards Vera.

"The focus has allowed my spirit to inhabit the deck which is now in my daughter's possession. As the Fool has noted, this form" she gestures to herself, "is an illusion. One which I have a limited ability to manifest. This ability, and a handful of others, are known to Vera, should you wish to ask her. In addition, you may have noted that fate was on your side, from time to time. This is the power of my Harrowing. I sensed great destiny in you - to impact my home, my city of Korvosa, for better or worse. I trust you will use the power of that destiny with wisdom. You may ask what questions you have, and I will tell you what I know." She shuffles the cards quietly and waits for any questions.

Magda had felt a nudge in her footsteps, here and there, during her night, but none of that is abnormal. She doesn't hold much mind to a destiny or worries much about the oddness of talking to someone's dead mom, but she does find something in the talk that catches her interest "So you were a head in Lamm's bedroom for, what was it, eight years ago... did you hear him say where he got some of us? So we can find their homes?" most of the kids were just snatched off the street, when they were too young to say I Live There. Madga herself couldn't remember where her parent's place had been, not that it mattered anymore.
