At the insistence of the gnome Venture-Captain Sebnet Sanserkoht, you stand in Nexus House. In Quantium, capital city of the magically powerful Nex, it obviously lends itself to some strange and awesome magical design. Though smaller and second to the Grand Lodge, its architecture puts even the foremost Pathfinder lodge to shame. Even the massive hallway of an antechamber! A waterfall flows in reverse from the floor to the ceiling at the end of the hall, framing a marble statue of a bookish middle-aged Taldan man tenderly holding the hand of a smirking Vudrani woman with a long, thick braid of hair.

In the center of the arcane opulence that is the Nexus House stands a diminutive figure, her bronze-hued skin and dark hair all the more striking given her sky-blue tunic and green leggings, the bright streaks of gold through her hair, and a prodigious collection of bangles along each forearm. She throws up her arms in welcome with a metallic jangle. “Pathfinders! Welcome to Nexus House! I’m Sebnet, one of the Vash-Vatom—Sebnet Sanserkoht, I mean, introductions and all.”
Without waiting for a response, she gestures and leads the way through one of the stone archways into a wide hallway before turning around and proceeding right back through the same archway into a comfortable sitting room, speaking all the while. “Thank you for helping — you’re here to help, right? Of course you are, you wouldn’t be here if you weren’t. Do you know who the Arclords of Nex are? One of them helps us access all kinds of delightful artifacts and relics, or at least we did, until he turned up stomped flat on the bottom of one of the Quantium golems’ feet the other day.
"Can you imagine? The poor fellow is still there. We might have to go get him, see, because he’s been murdered, and we’ve been commissioned to handle the preliminary investigation. We don’t know who’s responsible, but we know that the Arclord — his name is Kefanes Ahmakt — just got his shiny hands on a new book. Well a really old book, actually, it’s one written by Nex himself, and so it’s both quite valuable and also something that a lot of other people might want. Especially other Arclords. So the Nexian guard brought it here for safekeeping.” She points at an ancient, tattered folio in a glass case on a table to one side of the room.
“So! The obvious places to start looking are Kefanes’s workshop, which is being watched by the Nexian guard, but they’ll let you in if you tell them you’re working for the Society. And then you’ll probably want to examine Kefanes himself, so you’ll have to find the golem who’s giving him a ride around the city and perform some kind of extraction. Oh, that sounds like so much fun! I wish I could come with you! Anyway, while you’re doing that, and anything else that seems reasonable based on what you find out there, I’ll be here going through that old book to see if I can find something to tell us who might have wanted it so much. Come back here once you’ve checked things out, and we’ll have dinner and compare notes. All right? Did I forget anything? Do you have any questions?”
Ogren Wal
A tiny figure clad in shining, almost silver looking half-plate stands in the middle of the hallyway gazing at all the granduer in amazement. As his head moves about, it just emphasises how badly the bright steel of his armor clashes with the deep green of his skin. His eyes finally fix upon the statue at the end of the antechamber. Wondering who the statues represent, he adjusts the bluging pack on his shoulders and the shield on his arm.
As he finally catches sight of Sebnet and gives an enthusiastic wave and a somewhat toothy smile. "Hello there! You wouldn't know who those people at the end of the hallway are? They seem really important!"
The armored goblin stops and listens to Sebnet's introduction, before reaching out a hand for a shake, "I'm Ogren Wal, a devout follower of Sarenrae! Also what's a 'Rash-Baton' anywa..." His voices trails off as the small woman moves on. With a shrug, he follows her through the arch, a slight glint of annoyance showing as she just turns back around. The annoyance soon melts into amazement as the room turns out to be a completely different room.
The goblin keeps one ear cocked towards the rambling pathfinder and both eyes trained on the arch, giving only the barest hints he's even listening. "Mhmm.... No, I don't... Oh that's terrible..." Clearly contemplating going back through the arch to see what happens Ogren stops up short, one arm through the arch, at the mention of murder. His attention rivets back on Mrs. Bash-Va-watchamacallit, and listens to the rest of what she says intently.
After her briefing, he adds, "I do have a few questions. First, he probably got murdered over the book, but any ideas who might be intrerested in such a book? Second, why don't you come with us? Is being a Bash-Bottom mean you're reeeaaallly busy? Finally, why are Ke- Ke- Kevains hands 'shiny'?"

Sebnet smiles at the goblin. "You're an inquisitive little fellow! I like that," she says, though she stands a few inches shorter. "Well, those statues are the founders of Nexus House, Adolphus and Princess Ganjay. Fine mages, I've heard. A Rash-Baton sounds like something I wouldn't want to be hit with, but a Vash-Vatom is just a venture-captain of this very lodge. Someone borrowed it from a different book by Nex; it sounded so official, see. Venture-Captain may not have even been a title back then.
"Who might want the book? Who wouldn't? Even if you don't care for the material, which is quite boring, honestly, it's worth a fair amount, see! Just a bunch of angry letters from Nex to a golem factory. But the great wizard wrote it, so it's not just expensive. Some probably think there's some deeper meaning to it. Maybe there is!"
The gnome's face falls a little at Ogren's next question. "You know the Mana Wastes, a bit south of here? Sometimes magic doesn't work there, or it goes off all bungled up. One time, I was drinking a healing potion when I got hit with a bunch of negative energy and raw magic. Now pretty much anything meant to heal - living or undead - just hurt more. Not very conducive to field work." As quickly as it dropped, her grin returns. "But then I got promoted, so I'm always busy, with interesting things. So it evens out, see?

The dwarf studies the room, nodding in appreciation at the stonework, masonry, and architecture. He makes an imposing sight, clad in a finely crafted (though worn and dinged) breastplate and carrying a heavy warhammer, a shortbow, and a spiked steel shield, he looks fit for battle. Which he is at a moment's notice.
He bows low to Sebnet, his long, braided beard touching the floor. "I am Halgir, of the Ironanvil clan from the Five Mountains. I am honored to be here with you today."
He follows along throughout the briefing, but a frown of puzzlement crosses his face. "He was murdered for the book, but the thief didn't manage to take it? Doesn't sound like much of a burglar to me... don't the best burglars leave everyone alive?"
Elgolion
The elf is as fascinated by the waterfall as the goblin. He wears a simple jerkin and leggings in woodland colors, and carries a longbow and arrows, but no other weapons.
He bows at the waist to Sebnet as well, his hand on his heart. "I am delighted to meet you, Sebnet. I am Elgolion."
He watches Sebnet with sharp eyes that betray a keen intelligence, nodding along with all she shares. He smiles at Halgir's question before adding one of his own "How did Kefanes come to be on the bottom of the golem's foot?"

Ogren's smile also fades in commiseration. "Oh, I think I can understand that a little. My great-aunt once moved into a chocolate warehouse and decided to live off nothing but chocolate for a month. She ate so much, the smell of it started to make her sick, but she her body got so used to it she has to eat some everyday or she's can't keep any food down. She hates it. He gives the two larger people in the part a smile as they introduce themselves. He tries to stiffle a small laugh at the dwarf's beard when he bows. "It must be difficult to keep that beard clean, Hold-, Hall, uhh can I call you Hal? It certainly suits you, though! I've always wished I could grow one too. I think it'd help make people take me more seriously."
He then gives Elgolin a good look, slightly worried that the man has next to no weapons on him and very light armor only. I might have to make sure he stays protected... "So, uh, El-go-lion, know what I'll just call you El, where are you from?"

"He was murdered for the book, but the thief didn't manage to take it? Doesn't sound like much of a burglar to me... don't the best burglars leave everyone alive?"
"Maybe this burglar didn't like Kefanes," Sebnet muses, after nodding to acknowledge Halgir's greeting. "Or they killed him when they couldn't get to the book, or the fact they did so prevented them from finding it. They brought the book - Collected Directives - to us soon after the murder. Didn't even tell us where the thing was when it went down, how it was guarded. Another piece of the puzzle for you to divine, see?"
"How did Kefanes come to be on the bottom of the golem's foot?"
"I assume he was tossed under there after being killed. To mask the evidence? I heard tell there was a golem involved in the attack, but not a Quantium golem. No one's controlled those two since Nex, when he made them. And they just follow his old orders, walk around the city and mash any problems into pulp. Besides, they're massive." The gnome points over the statues' heads, as if to indicate the Quantium golems are taller than the 20-foot sculpture.
"He had ... shiny money hands? Oh, I'd love to meet one of those sha- sha- shiny people! Imagine how many orphanages they could save with their money hands!"
"Maybe those who had learned a lesson from being created to serve someone else's sentence! Not Kefanes, though. He'd always be making deals, see. Probably why most didn't like him to some degree - not enough to kill him, mind you."

Could've sworn I made this post earlier. I'll take us to the site of the first encounter shortly, but won't start until we have a full party.
Mordack is aware of about the same information as Ogren, if from different sources.
Sebnet ponders over Elgolion's questions for a moment. "No laws that I can think of. But there'll be plenty of trouble. You'll have to be quick and clandestine about it. I was joking - a bit - about the 'smashing to pulp' thing, though it could try if it keeps seeing you. It'll probably start off with some warning swats, but those have got to hurt too! Can't be such a giant without that trouble, see?"

"Well, I think that'll be all," Sebnet says, handing over a piece of parchment. "I'm sending at least one more agent to help. This map should get you to his workplace. That's where the murder went down. Seems like a good place to start. There'll be guards; just tell them you're Pathfinders. And if you find a stopping point by sunset, our table provides an excellent meal every day!"
It isn't a long walk to Kefanes' workshop. The squat building lies between a poor and an "affordable" section of town. In front, two Nexian guards idly shoo away passersby. They look up when they see you. "With the Society? You look it," one woman says. "The name's Zanhanal, and he's Eiab.
"Our best people bound the golem down with cords, but it won't stay down for long. Maybe they could beat it, but there'd be a fair bit more damage to the scene. Hopefully you can do it faster." She ushers you closer to the entrance before Eiab cuts in. "Whatever you do, don't electrocute it. That sort of thing fixes the thrice-damned machine. And it's immune to most other magic, too. Gave our elite guard a fair bit of trouble. Some sorts affect it, but we weren't quite sure which."
Ogren Wal
Ogren gives Sebnet a smile and picks up the parchment. "We'll keep an eye out for the other agents! Oh, and me and Hal and El and Mor will be sure to find whoever killed Mr. Shiny-Money-Hands and be back in time for dinner! A good goblin never turns down a free dinner, and I want to believe I'm one of the better ones!" He gives the slightly-shorter-than-him woman a proper, venture captain salute, and then heads out the door.
In the alleyway he takes a good long look at the map, then points in a direction. "Workshop's thataway!" He starts walking before hitting a crossroads with another alley, turning the map around and doing an about face. "Nope Workshop's THAT-away!" As they group moves he chatters away about all that he'd heard about Nex from his travels. Feel free to read the spoiler!
In front of the building, having only gotten the group lost a little, Ogren gives the tall guards a big smile. "Nice to meet you Eiab, Zanhanal! My name is Ogren. Thanks for keeping the place safe and just keeping people safe and letting us help you catch the dastardly person who murdered Ke- Kef- Mr. Shiny-Money-Hands! Also thanks for subuing... Lem? This airy workshop might have once been a pleasant, tidy space, but the room is now a chaotic disaster. Scorch marks mar the stone just inside the doorway, and sharp, dark-gray metallic shards lie scattered over the tiles. The equipment and tools on the table are now nothing more than a smashed jumble of glass, wood, and metal. The contents of the bookshelves lie strewn throughout the room, and streaks of dried blood mark the site of a deadly encounter. In the center of the room, a badly damaged flesh golem bound with sturdy silk rope twitches, groans, and strains against its bonds.
As you enter the room, its struggles only increase. The cords won't hold for long!
