The skum backs away as he lifts his hammer again and brings it down towards Uziah's head. Uziah manages to block the killing blow with his forearm.

Kevin, not sure why you rolled attacks for Uzziah and Heiek. We both rolled decent attacks on January 9th. Would the skum still be up after those attacks?

Fighting wasn’t nearly as fun when one’s friends were falling. Valera kept up her focus, desperate to put the foe down so she could provide some healing.

“This recording gem and the information it contains is for the organization’s internal use only and not for dissemination to the public, under penalty of law.”
The Spindle Solution, a division of the Ioun Imperative that served as the Azlanti Empire’s intelligence organization, was a group dedicated to improving humanity’s quality of life through the use of ioun stone technology. The organization created and specialized in the spindle series of stones, while also performing humanitarian research. Spindlelock Tower, and the facility it was a part of, was intended to be a research station.
This was the entirety of the organization as it was known to ordinary citizens. Behind this facade, though, the Spindle Solution was also a front for classified military and intelligence research and development. The recording goes on to mention that the group recently captured a spy. Originally suspected to be an elf from Celwynvian disguised as a human, the spy proved to be tenacious, resourceful, and dangerous. Once captured, the spy was placed in temporal stasis, and since the organization’s leadership was unwilling to house the prisoner at the Compass, the headquarters for the Spindle Solution, this facility was renovated in secret to contain the individual. Most of the other researchers here were unaware this was going on.
The recording continues, stating that the Spindle Solution leadership had recently determined that the Empire of Azlant had been manipulated by a hitherto unknown aquatic race. Some speculated that the spy might be related to these creatures, so a second series of renovations were performed on Spindlelock Tower to accommodate the spy’s release from stasis and eventual interrogation. The speaker ends the recording with a note that at the time of this recording, the general public is unaware of this aquatic threat.

The surviving books here are a major historical find, worth 5,000 gp together.
Spellcasters interested in creating new ioun stones and other magic devices might pay up to twice this amount.
Like the surviving books, the recording gem contains a historical look into Azlanti life and can fetch over 1,000 gp from a historian.
One of the surviving books is a spellbook. It has 100 pages, 32 of which contain spells: 1st-level spells (Disguise Self, Heightened Awareness, Identify), 2nd-level spells (Invisibility, Fox's Cunning, Bears Endurance, Cat's Grace), and 3rd-level spells (Heroism, Arcane Sight, Gaseus Form, Communal Protection from Arrows, Protection from Energy, Communal Spider Climb, Water Breathing). The book is worth 1,670 gp if sold. All of these spells on the alchemist and wizard spell lists

Valera ran over to Iraska, and held her hands over his wounds. Ice cold water poured over him...

The water was so cold that it left the man numb wherever it touched. However, it also brought broken bones back together and healed ruptured organs. So, in her estimate, it was a fair trade.

Uzziah picks up the gem and listens intently to its recording. When it ends, he plays it again. After the second play, he says:

"This is of dire import. The Azlanti faced an underwater threat...and here we stand with these creatures roaming the facility freely!"

Heiek checks to make sure Iraska is okay (thanks to Valera), and then gives his attention to Uzziah. Almost casually, he picks up the skum's lucerne hammer, gives it a few test swings, and silently decides he likes it better than his other polearm.

"My guess is that the creatures here and now aren't directly related to whatever happened thousands of years ago. But they managed to get around the security of this place, so I'm also betting that they're in cahoots with somebody smarter.

"These keys will helpful, maybe. And this definitely will," he finishes, handing the spellbook to Valto.


There's still another floor but you guys are still a bit banged up. Ye can heal or retreat to rest up, or press ahead etc. Just highlighting options.

"So, my parents and aunts and uncles--who are adventurers--said this sort of thing happens all the time. You go into a 'dungeon'," Heiek uses finger quotes for the word 'dungeon,' "but you'd need to hole up and recuperate mid-delve. With those automated crossbows downstairs, maybe we should think about doing that in one of these side rooms instead of leaving the tower altogether."

Valera happily went from person to person, healing as she went. She was apparently without a care in the world, treating painful open wounds as if though they were but scratches. Luckily her powers were enough to turn them into just that.

Rest it is so!


Almost the entirety of this floor is open. A ramp rises from the second floor along the southwestern wall of the chamber. In the center of the room is a vast tank of water with transparent walls and no floor that extends down to the story below. A single transparent door with an opaque handle is built into the eastern face of the tank.

Just east of the tank is a much smaller transparent chamber with a similar door. This one contains no water, however, and a blanket is hung casually over the open door. On the floor nearby are some damp blankets, and pots and bowls that contain picked-over rations and the remains of partially eaten fish.

Two humans sit in the area and as you climb the ramp rise to their feet. Both have transparent skin but their equipment is clearly of Andoran craftsmanship. The man is blonde with a mustache and wears breastplate. The woman has red hair and wears a matching pair of blue dress and cloak. She asks "Did you kill the creatures downstairs or manage to sneak past them?" The man has a sword at his belt and the woman has a spear.

”Hi!” Valera flashed a warm smile. ”They’re dead, but only because they attacked us. It is *so* nice to meet someone here who talks first and stabs second. I’m Valera! My friends and I aren’t here to fight unless we have to. What are your names?”

Uzziah steps in, ahead of Abiel.

"We slew them in self-defense. We are searching for citizens of the original colony. What happened to you?"


The woman responds first "It is, I am Eliza Haniver and this is Raymond Arkley. There were so many of them and even if we snuck past the trap downstairs is quite deadly... We can't remember where everyone else is, it's tough to try and recall what exactly happened truth be told. It's like the memories are clouded by mist. Raymond's been a lot less talkative since we got here." Raymond nods.

You all definitely recall Raymond Arkley is the name of the original leader of the colony. Eliza is one of the colonists from the first wave with magical abilities.

She continues. "They seemed to have done something to us, our skin I mean. It feels fine but it's see through and starts to dry out after a few hours. Even if we got past the guards and the trap that might be hazardous. I assume we are on the same or a nearby island but have no idea where to go to find Talmandor's bounty. I take it you are all from the second wave? Did the others stay or did they head back?"

"We have indeed heard of you both. Raymond, you led the first colony, correct? We arrived to find an empty settlement, that threats such as ankhegs and those forest goblins had begun to infiltrate. Recently, a raiding party of these Skum attacked. After slaying them, we retrieved this map-"

Uzziah reaches for the map to show it to the pair.

"-which showed the northwestern coast of the island of Ancorato, with a symbol which turned out to represent this very tower. We are the rescue party for you and the other seized colonists, hoping to find you all here. Anything that you can tell us about this building, your captors, or the state of the other colonists would be helpful."


"We haven't seen anyone else for quite some time." She examines the map. "I was exploring by myself and come to a spot about here, there were two talking statues and I found a tower, the one on the map but then my memories get fuzzy. I suspect our memories were tampered with."

"Finding you here is a great sign, we still aren't sure what could have happened to the others but getting you back will reassure a lot of the others in the second wave"


"Very well, perhaps while we are heading back you can tell us about what has been going on back there since you arrived and how you've organised yourself? Spare no detail, perhaps together we can figure out where the others were!"

You guys can start leveling to level 4, so that means second level spells for Valto! Power attack gets better for people etc.... and a stat point for all.


The next few days pass by peacefully. Eliza seems glad to be returned to the settlement. Raymond is still very quiet. Both of them seem to need to spend time in the water every few hours or their skin dries out.

After two weeks Raymond seems to get back to his old self a little, becoming more talkative though his memory is very hazy not even recalling meeting you or his first few days back in the settlement. "I wasn't thinking clearly when we first met, I'd like to thank you for rescuing us. I think you'll understand my confidence has been shaken by these events but from what I've heard you've all been doing great work in keeping the colony safe. I have a few good pieces of gear and if you'll make use of any of them you can take them."

"We have done what we can. I would greatly appreciate the breastplate, shield, and cloak. My chain coat and buckler are proving less than sufficient against the dangers of this isle."

I'm most interested in the armour and shield for Uzziah. Would also like the cloak but content to have someone else take that if they aren't getting something else.


After a further four weeks Ramona asks to speak with you. "Most of the buildings are repaired now and that ghost seems to have settled down for one reason or another. I'd like you to start surveying the island to chart its geography and secure resources essential for maintaining and expanding the colony. It's time to start expanding, the third wave of colonists are on the boat heading towards us and I intend to make sure they have a better reception than we got. Your general goals include locating a quarry of stone suitable for construction of larger buildings, prospecting for precious metals or ore that could expand the settlement’s trade arrangements, flagging forests to establish lumber camps, and discovering whether there are any peaceful indigenous inhabitants—and if so, opening diplomatic relations with them.
