"It is indeed the soul of Gellius Thrune," Leventi says. "And that sounds like a fine beginning of a negotiation. I would be happy to hand over his soul and do you one or several better. If you return to my entry and destroy Vetrivides and his guards and destroy whatever evidence you have found that incriminates me in the eyes of Hell, I will give you Gellius' soul and release the Hellknights back to the Boneyard for Pharasma to sort as she sees fit and destroy Ophelia's contract. How does that sound? I assure you that Vetrivides will have no compassion on the souls that I have collected."

What Leventi says about Vetrivides' concern for Leventi's illegally obtained souls is probably true.

Mack looks to his companions. "Gotta say, folks, Leventi makes a good point. I'm not looking to do Hell any favors, and a little chaos here couldn't hurt. We get what we came here for and free Ophelia and the Hellknights from their infernal contracts. That's sound good."

When Leventi mentions an option other than killing Vetrivides, Mack raises an eyebrow. "I'll bite. How could we all leave here happy and avoid further violence?"

"I cannot promise you that you will avoid violence," Leventi says. "That part depends upon you. However, if you are willing to give me a very detailed description of what evidence you have found and where (you can brush over it), convince Vitrivides that you could not find me--he knows that I have powerful defenses, so convincing him that you were too weak to break into my sanctum should not be too much of a stretch--and surreptitiously remove that nasty device--looks like an hour glass--he has attached to my statue in the entry hall, then I could escape and cover my tracks before that upjumped osyluth can verify any of the evidence."

Mack confers with the team. "Freeing the souls of the Hellknights and Ophelia Peran is something we cannot accomplish, unless we accept Leventi's offer. And the contract devil's unlikely to give up Gellius Thrune otherwise without a fight."

He holds up two fingers, "Option one, fight Leventi for the soul of Gellius and forfeit the opportunity to free the others. Option two, attempt to bluff Vetrivides and try to retrieve the hourglass device, which might provoke a battle, assuming we fail. If we're successful, we free five souls from Hell."

Mack looks at his colleagues. "I'd vote for option two, if for no other reason than that it has the potential for greater good."

The Exchange

Fek squats on his heels, looking from the pit to Leventi to Mack.

No particular opinion, though Fek would love trying to disable the hourglass.

Rocky sighs.

"I prefer peace over violence. But you sir are a liar and a thief. You are guilty of using lies and forgery to corrupt legal deals. And now you want us to trust you when you say committing great crimes will get us what we want. These last few hours we have seen what happens to people who make such deals in life, And that was presumably honest contracts. I will make no deals with you and urge my companions against such foolishness."

An easy Sense Motive tells you Rocky plans to bring Leventi in and he isn't expecting it to happen without a fight.

Somehow privy to some of his companions' internal and unvoiced monologues, Mack considers their views. "I recall we discussed the possibility of purchasing Ophelia Peran's contract, but I didn't recall that we'd actually done that. Such a relief, if we did so."

"The Hellknights are free of the wall, it's true. So they're also free to leave Hell? If so, that's great news, too."

"As for being instuments of Hell's 'justice'? I'm sure Dispater & Co. will be grateful for our support. Some might consider that a 'good' thing, I suppose."

"In a practical sense, facing a contract devil in his lair is a proper challenge." Mack looks down at the infernal runic tattoos covering his body. Yeah, a challenge indeed. "Perhaps a tussle with bone devil or three in the entry isn't a true test of our prowess."

"But I won't stand in the way of democracy. I've said my piece. Please pick your poison."

Undermining Hell is my main goal, if we've otherwise accomplished our mission.

"Any thoughts, Leventi? I'm no devil lawyer--now, that's an oxymoron--but your offer isn't particularly persuasive, it seems."

Davina looks at Rocky again and nods to him. "Yes perhaps you're right. This fiend is a liar and a cheat. Despite his pretense towards law I've no doubt he'll double cross us." she whispers to Mack "I think his offer has been rejected now"

Leventi sighs. "If it must come to base aggression, I am prepared to defend myself. However, I will give you one last chance to be relieved of your misconceptions in this negptiation." He waves his hand and an infernal document appears. "I very much hold the lease on Ophelia's soul--I would summon her, but someone seems to have destroyed the physical manifestation and it takes a while for them to reform--so if you have the contract, by all means produce it (you do not have it). Beyond Vetrivides' lack of concern for putting my acquisitions in the right place--giving them up would weaken Hell--he does not possess the authority to free souls. Osyluth are here." He hold a hand at his waist. "I am here." He moves his hand to his shoulder.

"If the Dralnene lass was not here to take you home, could you find your way out of the Nine Pits? Could those four hopeless Hellknights?" He raises an orange, horny brow.

"So, do we have a deal? Or do we... fight?" he says, the last word filled with disgust.

"Alas..." Leventi sighs.

The contracts in the room begin to move about the room with increasing speed. You feel occasional stings as the flying scrolls leave numerous, tiny paper cuts on your exposed flesh. The wounds begin to weep blood.

Leventi reaches over his shoulder and pulls down a drape that was hiding a symbol. The symbol flares to life and then you are wracked with pain. He snaps his fingers and a fire erupts all around the Pathfinders, Fek narrowly escaping by virtue of his position away from the group. Milo also seems to endure the flame better than others. Zarta takes momentary cover behind Mack and avoids much of the fire.

While you recover from the blast of flame, Leventi finishes chanting and then snaps his fingers again. Rocky feels something pulling at his body.

...and that's his nova, all down hill from there.

Milo manages to duck the worst of the fireball, though the pain from the strange rune is almost unbearable.

But the pain just makes his angrier, as the bits of parchment flash about, tearing at his flesh.

He starts murmuring in draconic, arcane phrases that again cause small bits of flame to start licking along his hands and arms, as his eyes boring into the devil on the far side of the room filled with nothing but rage. Once again, the air around him starts to dry as if the moisture were being pulled from it. The flames on his arms start to shift to small arcs of electricity. With one last angry cry, the electricity seems to coallesce and arc across the room to explode, filling the far side of it with a large ball of energy.

Casting an empowered fireball, converting it to electricity. Will target it in front of Leventi, hoping the blast will take out some of the flying parchments as well.

Edit: Doesn't the strange orb thing out front prevent any sort of planar travel at the moment?
What is it that's banishing Rocky? A roll to find out?

Oh, dear. Rocky, come back! That wasn't the creature with the quickened delayed fireball blast. He's not a pit fiend. Thanks, Milo. Now you know what he has planned next.

EDIT: Regarding the hourglass, it has a specific target and only applies to teleportation of devils.

I'm not going to hold Davina and Milo to it because I forgot to say it, but the bleed damage is (now was) a continuous damage effect requiring a concentration check.

Milo explodes the room and the contracts flutter to the ground. Leventi looks somewhat perturbed. "My contracts!"

Davina releases a healing wave (assuming that you all delay until her action and don't run out of her range).

So it sounds like Rocky didn't go poof.

As a swift action Rocky enters Dragon Style then jumps over the pit next to Leventi and tries to grab him.

"Yeah, this was a fracking brilliant idea." Mack sighs, once again letting the testosterone and self-righteousness of others afford him yet another chance to die. Brainless brawn and sanctimoniousness are a poor substitute for quick wits. Oh well, here we go again.

Mack gives a nod of gratitude to Davina for the healing and shrugs. We tried our best to convince them, Angel.

"Zarta, you want to keep hiding behind my skirts, or may I have your permission to join this battle." He winces. Shouldn't lay the sarcasm on too thickly, Mack ol' buddy.

While he waits for her to come out of her aristocratic stupor, Mack asks his colleagues. "Anyone care to help me flank this guy? No hurry, I'll wait."

GM, shall I roll the UMD checks now for the bless weapon charges I said I'd expend on my kukris before we passed through the portal? It would take at least two rounds to activate the wand, one round to pass through the portal, and whatever time we spent in conversation within Leventi's lair.

Mack delays until someone more aggressive positions themselves as a flanking partner, then he'll click the heals of his boots of speed, close with the fiend and attack.

I missed that you didn't roll them. Sure.

Nothing untoward happens as Rocky leaps over the grate-covered fire pit. However, Leventi snaps out a long scrolls like a whip as the oread descends toward the devil. The edges of the scroll cut as sharply and deeply as any blade. "Ah ah! No touching."

Fortunately, Rocky manages to avoid getting wrapped in the binding contract. Unfortunately, the contract devil proves difficult to grapple.

Zarta gives Mack an arch look as she prepares to cast a spell.

Just want to check where the damage to Rocky is coming from. -5 starting HP -26? from half fireball dmg, -5 from bleed, -12 from scroll aoo, -6 from bleed = -54 + 19 from mass CLW should mean Rocky is only missing 25 HP. What source did I miss? Did the mass CLW not stop the bleeding?

techically, the bleed only happens at the start of your turn... Davina's heal stopped the first, before Rocky went. And the second from an aoo, doesnt trigger yet, due to his turn already started. Shrug. The only one who should have taken any bleed damage, thus far, is Davina.

You are mistaken as it applies to these specific effects, Milo. You all took the damage for having entered the hazard when combat started, which is a continuous damage effect (1 slashing/round) separate from and additional to the bleed, and then all your had your turn and delayed so Davina could hit everyone that was injured.

Oh, and Milo reminds me that Fek is still bleeding because he was too far away.

Mordiskitos bounds over the grate, which belches forth a bright plume of hellfire. The wolf rolls out of the way just in time, though. He cannot catch the surprisingly agile devil with his teeth.

Without his floating contracts to protect him, one of Keos' arrows finds his mark. This causes the devil to frown and mutter, "This was in mint condition. Sealed in the package!"

He steps out of the way of Mack's blades, barely seeming to notice the attack.

Zarta finishes her spell and moves forward. Mordiskitos, Rocky, and Fek feels their bodies accelerate. Mack would as well if he was not already accelerated.

The glass of the case surrounding the statue to the devil's right shatters, raining down upon Fek--presumably giving a clue to Leventi's earlier non-sequitor--and the stone golem inside begins to flare with fire as it tears itself free of the rest of the display.

Leventi casts defensively and then Rocky feels his body being drawn away.

Milo continues to swear as the statue joins the battle... but once again he starts to spout arcane words in draconic, and the electrical arcs form once more, before another ball of electricity explodes in the back end of the room... somehow the Pathfinders seem unaffected, as the bolts of electricity fills the area.

Full round action: Intensified fireball, using his selective rod to exclude the good guys. Converting the fire to electricity again, hitting both Leventi and the statue thing... then 5' step.

Leventi deflects most of the blast as the contracts draping around him rise up to form a momentary shell.

The golem appears completely unaffected, although the blast does shear away some of the confining iron from the ruined case.

Technically, Fek shouldn't be there, but it wasn't worth the trouble to try to explain why before the reason manifested. Now I should move him to the closest legal square.

Don't want to leave everyone to fight a devil and a golem so Rocky will put some extra effort into staying here and use his Impossible Feat boon.

Rocky has a waking dream of staying and fighting. It helps him stay in the moment.
