Welcome,
This is part of Outpost II
A Starfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 1–4.
Eox's Blackmoon region contains countless forgotten Eoxian ruins, leftovers from an apocalyptic assault on the planet. Few are allowed to dig up these sites, yet the Starfinder Society and undead bone sages maintain a joint academic venture known as the Blackmoon Excavation. When Starfinder archaeologists and undead workers begin disappearing from the site the Society sends in a team of agents to uncover why—a secret that resides in the nearby ruins!

If you are ready to depart, this is where your boon finalizing happens
This scenario doesn’t call upon any specific types of boons, so you should select whatever boons you think would be appropriate based on the results of the briefing.
You can also use this time to make any purchases from Absalom Station prior to departing for Eox on board a Society-chartered shuttle.

I didn't want to break the roleplaying flow you guys are in by listing some metagame options so I tried to hint through Berchata that there might be something to do here in camp before you move on so as to not deny you the chance.
But to be honest the information isn't all the useful and you've gotten pretty much everything (with Berchta's latest answer) of it in character already
For example:
You could go to some the 32 sentient staff here and listen to their gossip from a dark corner (stealth) ask them about it (diplomacy) trick them into talking about it (bluff),place a comm device under their lunch table and listen in (sleight of hand) or even break into their electronic diary (computers) to find out something like;
Intel #1: Everyone who went missing, including the undead laborers, were all operating beyond the established perimeter of the main excavation site. It’s common knowledge that they fell prey to some of Eox’s roaming feral undead. (If the PCs have succeeded at the skill checks to examine the bodies in the lab, they know this to be incorrect conjecture).
On to the digsite it is. I'll update tomorrow
Baragh Dented Helm

Just a heads up. This is the week I do a LOT of teaching (14 labs throughout Tuesday through Friday, 1.5 to 2 hours each lab), so I will not be able to post much if anything after ~9 AM EST each day. If needed bot me. In combat he will usually punch unless it is hazardous for him to do so. And he is a soldier, so not a whole lot of skills to worry about :-)
Vecro
|
Yeah let's figure something out, as this is preposterous :D We are around 25 hexes away (each 30ft). Vecro can run 4 hexes being flat-footed for 10 rounds in total. So I can be next to them in 6-7 rounds :D
When I looked at it, I can run keeping the southern wall which makes me not visible to one of the shooters. In the next round, I can get to the red pillars. Potentially allowing in few rounds to be around 12-14 hexes away. And the last set of hexes there is no cover to close the distance.
Having said that closing distance might not be a viable option.
LA64397F

25 squares * 30 foot squares is ~750 feet. That's some severe penalties even for a sniper rifle. We probably don't need to worry about them hitting us until at least at the pillars. Even there (14*30=420), we're talking about a -8 range penalty for a laser rifle to shoot back at them.
Ella can continue to move the holographic image ahead of the group, but I doubt there's much we can do about them seeing most of us running down the canyon.
Revvy Bitterleaf
|
Note that even though the range of holographic image is 400 feet + 40 feet/level the image can’t extend beyond four 10-foot cubes plus one 10-foot cube per caster level. The image lasts for as long as you concentrate. You can move the image within the limits of the size of the effect...so that's at most 2 squares from the ruins.
After that you'll be passing in front of the hologram.
LA64397F
|
I thought that meant that I couldn't create an image bigger than four-10 foot cubes + 10 foot cube/CL. Not that the image can't travel more than that distance.
Basically, Ella can't create a 100 foot yacht at this level even if it's within the range. But I thought she could make a halfling sized image and walk it 400 feet. Much more limited if that's not how it is.
Also, if she moves, does the range move with her?
Revvy Bitterleaf
|
I'll be honest that I'm not 100% sure on this but the way I read it:
You can have an illusion in those cubes (of what ever size you want to have in that area in this case a small sized moving halfling) and have it move around in there. It could also be a small Forrest or a small yacht.
And that area can be at a distance away from you up to the 400ft+40ft/lvl, with the entire area being within that range (so not put it at the edge and have it extend out from there)
Range:
An effect’s range indicates how far from you it can reach. An
effect’s range is the maximum distance from you that the
effect can occur, as well as the maximum distance at which
you can designate the effect’s point of origin. If any portion of
the effect’s area would extend beyond this range, that area is
wasted.
Area:
If the spell affects an area, then the spell stays within that area for its duration
Description
You weave nearby photons into illusory holograms that can take almost any form you can imagine. These holograms are usually effective against cameras, robots, and living creatures.
1st: When you cast holographic image as a 1st-level spell, it produces a purely visual hologram at long range (400 feet + 40 feet/level). The image has no sound, smell, texture, or temperature. The image can’t extend beyond four 10-foot cubes plus one 10-foot cube per caster level. The image lasts for as long as you concentrate. You can move the image within the limits of the size of the effect.
Going by that last sentence -> You can move the image within the limits of the size of the effect. Looks to me that you can't have the image go outside those cubes.
And going by it being an effect with an area and the spells stays within the area.
I don't think I've ever seen a range move along with the caster. Most of the time something moves along with you it's an aura or an effect centered on something/someone.
But I think that if you keep within range of the area you created (and keep concentrating on it) it will still be there. So you could be 400 ft behind it, create an illusion of a wall, walk 400 ft towards it, then 400 ft in front of it and the wall would still be there (just 400 ft behind you).
Which to be honest seems to be to about the right power for a first lvl spell. Otherwise you can cast an advance scout in front of you of a huge battle tank and always have it move (up to hundreds of feet) in front of your party while you walk behind it and keep moving it forward everywhere you go as long as you keep concentrating on it and tricking people into shooting at it and/or providing cover to the entire party behind it - until they disbelieve it
(which now that I think about it sounds as a nice lvl 2 spell with a duration of 1 round or minute per level)
LA64397F
|
Fair enough. I think you're right about being on par for a 1st level spell.
Ok, so Ella can move the hologram halfling forward, but at some point soon much before the pillars it'll reach the limit of the spell. I think it's done it's job anyway, helping to reveal the location of the snipers.
Vecro
|
Just a small note: Shobhad horizon striker, tactical
Can shoot to 500 ft. So 700 ft is beyond first increment making -2 penalty for hitting. So we are far from safe if they have that ;) Either way we need to close the distance, I wonder how probable is that there is more enemies than only 2.

I will post in a few minutes after I get caught up.

Whew....which is good. I got to play a couple of great games ran by great GM's, and then run Data Breach (which also has HUGE FREAKING MAPS...doing it IRL required me to cut the map up into chunks for people to go through). It was fun...and we got to see a fully tricked out Operative doing MASSIVE damage with Trick attack. That is what saved them from the end boss.

Yeah, If we go with cover fire I might delay my movement till the end of the round to make sure that they shoot at the one who is covered by fire :D
Unless we will go with Harrying Fire instead of covering fire ;) Than yeah full sprint.
Revvy, keep in mind that I am giving you a Solarian in one piece and I would like to get him back like that :P
Vecro
|
I am back but I am waiting for Baragh to charge. My opinion is that we should not be running against them. Meaning -4 AC make it to easy to hit us. Maybe we should overall skip the idea of closing the distance and just start a shootout
Vecro

With regards to Mute I think we can also do double move and fell prone. Move action - move, Standard action - move, swift action - fell prone. Or do one move, fell and shoot (maybe in reverse order).

I agree, but tracking back his movement it looks like he moved 4 squares of 30ft..so that would be 4 single moves or one full round round
Reticent Stroidjumper

I'll rush only 60ft next turn and the drop prone. This last stretch here is gonna be a killer. Once the others get that covering fire going, I'm sure I'll be fine to move after but I just need to land some hits.
Revvy Bitterleaf

Moving it here since we seem to tend to spam gameplay with OOC stuff
I've been pounding on the options and I have a question to the GM. Can I join Baragh and walk behind him? So Baragh has a black body as a shield, while I would have Baragh with a body as a shield :P However mine is walking on it's own. I am considering the options for crossing the plane and I am running out of options. I can join dwarf and walk huddled behind him. In theory, soft cover can give +2 to +4 of AC ;)
Yes, as long as the line of fire passes through Baragh before it reaches you, you will have (soft) cover. It's a pretty clear rule straight from the core book.
Of course there has to be a good reason to fire at you instead of Bargagh for them to consider targeting you behind someone else

BTW, in Pathfinder, I stay away from full BAB's characters (only have 1, a ifrit samurai). Never really liked them...felt too limited in fun.
In SFS I have 2 (a Formian Solarion and Baragh), and Baragh is so much fun to play...crazy drunk dwarf--okay a stereotype, but still fun. I thought the whole "priest of Iomedae, and Torag" spin is what makes him fun. That, his carefree most of the time, and then slightly morose...and of course his whole punch or be punched mentality.
Every time I get to play him IRL people give me that strange look on "is he really that crazy" and I have to prove that Baragh is :-)
Baragh Dented Helm

Mute, I can so understand. This is not a sniper build...I do have a long range combat character (a mechanic scholar)...but dealing with the sniper sights I am clueless myself.
I think we are all doing the best we can do. This is definitely not what I expected in this scenario. Glad I haven't ran it yet, get to experience the whole "WTF" moments without knowing....

I have been wanting to build a Dwarf Armor Storm Soldier too! The idea of a Dwarf running around punching or tearing things apart with his power armor is awesome! What does the Star Knight archetype give you?
Baragh Dented Helm

First off, I lose pretty much all even level (2, 4, 6, 12) feats...so yeah, it kinda sucks.
But for level 2 I got a 20% fortification, which is not bad...might even be used in this game.
I can challenge (basically get an intimidate while attacking...ehh ability) at level 4.
Level 6 I can take the base power, or be able to put holy on a weapon I wield.
So, I lose feats, but it gives me more 'flavor' for the character.

I see nothing wrong with playing a stereotype. For me, the most important part is to find something special about character and try to role play it. I am completely new to starfinder and pbp in general however the fact that you can turn an attack roll into a paragraph describing movement, feints, dodges etc is amazing. You actually have time to make it a role play, while irl I was struggling with that. (well here I struggle as well, but I enjoy trying).
With regards to BAB heroes. They are somehow one dimensional which means that in a lot of situations you participate in a very limited way. And my extensive few weeks of experience shows that Starfinder Society games favor heroes that are more flexible and can find themselves in different situations.
All in all, I like Baragh as a hero, he seems fun and you play him well.

Been GMing pretty much everthing for ~30 years, and PFS for at least 7 and SFS since it started...so yeah. IRL games are one thing, you just rattle off what you are doing, and move on. In PbP games--which my wife has done for ~20 years in MUSH's and MOO's--it is all about the poses and descriptions on what you are doing that makes the game. The actual rolls are ancillary--mostly. It keeps you honest, but you have to hate when you roll those abyssal rolls.
Vecro, I struggle with it a lot in IRL games as a player. In PbP I just think what I can do and what fits the character. The posts I do can take as few as ~1-2 minutes, or as long as 30+, just depending on finding the right words. You BTW are doing very well, so don't stress on if you feel you are struggling.
In PFS I feel full BAB's are limited. Fighters get feats and 2 skills per level...not enough to build a back story. Same with most of the other full BAB's, though some have more flavor (Paladins have their gods, Ranger their companions or their attachment to nature for example).
In SFS I feel they gave the Soldiers more skills (4 vs 2 for PFS Fighters), which helps. But it still is limiting. What I pity is the Full BAB solarian--Cards on the Table I do have a 3rd level Solarian named Kitkul, so I know the pain--get only 4 skill points...are supposed to be some kind of Jedi feel, but can't do jack because the lack of skills and being the only true dual (or even triple) stat class. Melee Solarians--Strength, Charisma and Constitution are a must. Ranged Solarians--Dexterity and Charisma are still a must, and Constitution is useful. With that, trying to even get a 12 in Intelligence feels impossible or close to.
Oh well, enough rambling. SFS I feel leans more to the roleplay vs. the rollplay. Glad I am in them, and glad I am able to find awesome games (with awesome GM's and awesome players) to do PbP in these scenarios.

Yeah, I hear you. With regards to Solarian yeah it is a problematic role. I think that the critical piece here is to define your character outside of the skills (as you have none :D). Either through the race that you play (like Kitkul does) or through some other manners. And then performing some roles like Kitkul when he was captain on a ship allows to present it.
With regards to skills, I play Kasatha who is presented as the most archetypic Solarian yet starts with 8 Int and 12 Wisdom :(
Either way, 1 week more of running through flatlands and I will be able to attack someone ;). I was considering exploding with supernova behind the pillar just for the sake of doing it :P
Baragh Dented Helm

If it is one thing I wish they would fix is to give Solarian's 6 skills per level.
And yeah, come up with a role for your solarian. Kitkul was easy, a formian would have the whole hive/brood/clan feel, and need a designated role. Since most "adventuring" formians are usually sterile females (since females are the warriors, and given more individuality) I figured that she manifested her solarian powers and realized that her queen wasn't happy with her unusual powers. With that she left, and found out that the Starfinder Society is a lot like her clan, with the VC's being the queens, most of the Agents are either soldiers or workers for the Society and all that. So she just assumes that she is always going to be the "protector" of any allies she is with, and will do her best to be the one to get them all through.
One thing I don't understand--coming from PFS and now SFS--is the...."interesting" Pregen builds. The Ninja and Ranger in PFS...yeah, lets not mention those. And the Kasatha in SFS. Some of the builds feel like they just had to shoe horn something into there...and didn't have a direction or sense of purpose for the character. The 8 INT is because of race only...and they really wanted to put more into other stats apparently...but still.
Shrug, 1 week maybe...though I think we might get there by Monday. Slogging through the waste with Vecro at my back and carrying Civ in front of me.

According to the forum they tried something new with the map to give people who specialize in sniper rifles the benefit of having (the possibility) to fire at a realy long range.
It sure if a different experience from most combats.
Also to inform you; this weekend I'll be attending a local con so I'm most likely not able to post till late on Sunday
Vecro
|
Well, it most certainly is a different experience. As well it actually allows you to use actions like covering fire which is not very popular, or carrying a body as a shield;)
Either way, enjoy your time at the con.
