Lheorvine fights his way up the ladder from the aft hold to the passenger berths. The ship is listing to one side and downwards, making his way like scrambling upwards along a sloping hillside. When they reach the short corridor between the cabins he finds Ishmex and Blythe emerging, and Cedric sticks his head out, eyes bleary from sleep, clinging to the doorframe to stop from slipping out. There is the sound of rushing water and shouts and screams from the crew from somewhere below.

"What's going on?" asks Cedric. As Lheorvine yells at him he blinks and then clambers back into his cabin to pull on some trousers.

A wave slaps the side of the ship and the tilt to the deck increases with a jerk.

Blythe casts Light on Cedric, to help him see, and help us see him.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25 Delmar notices the sudden change in motion of the ship, and quickly throws the most important things back in his pack. Then makes his way to the deck.

Lheorvine runs back to his cabin, where he grabs his bow and his backpack. He casts a long, sad look at his suit of platemail, shakes his head and heads topside.

Cedric re-emerges into the passageway, trousers on. The ship settles a bit further, the deck and the bulkhead now hard to tell apart due to the skewed angles. The way out is now a precarious clamber down a steeply canted corridor, filled ankle-deep with rushing seawater, to the doorway.

It's a DC 10 Climb check to get out. If you fail you are delayed rather than you fail - see below - if you succeed you make it on deck. I'm assuming everyone except Delmar and Ishmex is below decks and needs to make this check.

On deck, the list of the ship makes it hard to move. The starboard rail is nearly in the water and the bow is sinking further into the sea. Water is gushing out of the companionway to the decks below the fo'c'stle where the crew have their berths. A few scrambled out as Ishmex first got topside but no more seem to be coming from that direction. The strong wind is catching the sails, dragging the ship over on to the reef on which it is grounded. The Captain clings to the helm yelling orders. Sailors are above, desperately trying to cut down the rigging.

Then, with a sudden crack the mainmast snaps about halfway up. Giant splinters of wood, swathes of wet canvas and broken bodies fall from the sky and snapped cables hiss through the air like whips. The main chunk of the broken mast collapses on to the foremast, taking that down too. The Captain disappears in a hail of debris and the ship lurches over.

OK, if you made the Climb check above, you are on deck when all the above happens. Delmar and Ishmex are on deck anyway. If you are on deck, first make a DC 18 Reflex save - if you fail you take 1d10 damage from falling debris. Next make a DC 20 Acrobatics check. If you fail, you are flung into the sea by the sudden jerk of the deck. Then your ordeal really begins... If you succeed, you may choose to remain on deck.

If you are below decks (i.e. you failed the Climb check) you need to make a DC 20 Acrobatics or you take 1d6 falling damage as you slide down the corridor, on to the deck and tumble into the sea anyway. If you succeed, you can stay where you are.

If anyone goes into the sea, we will go to spoilers for those individuals.

Finally, everyone can make a DC 15 Perception check:

Spoiler:
With a short yell Cedric is flung from the companionway and into the sea, disappearing into the black roiling waves.

Delmar dives aside as the mast comes crashing down, unfortunately he too is flung into the see by the attempt to move to safety.

GM:
I take it the spoilers for those in the sea are individual, not collective?

As Delmar hits the water he lets it wash over him, holding his breath in the hope that he will surface safely. He clings to his pack hoping to use it to stay afloat, and considers the impact of taking a mutigen once he can breath. Once he surfaces, his first thorught is to look around for Cedric.

As Blythe attempts to hustle above-decks, she smacks her head on some flying cargo, and gets turned around. The ship lurches, and she tumbles out of the interior of the ship, her feet flying over head, her sword gripped tightly, and into the freezing waters.

Ishmex:

OK, I need three Swim checks from you. The DC is 15, but if you are wearing a pack you take a -2 penalty to that, and if you have anything in either hand (or both) you take an additional -5 penalty. For each check you fail, you take 1d6 damage from being dashed by the waves against the rocks of the reef. Between checks, you can choose to lose the pack and/or what is in your hands. Also, if you insist on holding on to anything in your hands, in the two 'gaps' between the Swim checks you must make a DC 15 STR or DEX check (your choice) or you end up dropping what you are holding anyway.

The number of checks passed or failed will also determine what happens to you more generally...

Congratulations! You are the only player on both tables to make all three Swim checks. You don't win anything, but thought you might like to know...

The water is brutally cold but Grulorg ploughs through the waves, his powerful frame and night vision helping him to avoid the rocks that lie just below the surface. But the current is very strong and he is dragged quickly from the site of the wreck. Fighting it is fruitless and he swims with it for a while, looking for some sort of refuge. Everything is dark in the moonless, overcast night. But as immersion in the numbing water begins to deaden his limbs he spots what look like waves breaking on a shore a few hundred yards away. Summoning the last reserves of his strength he makes for them, hoping that it is not just another isolated reef. The flow of the water and his own efforts carry him closer, and now he can see a low cliff and breakers washing on a narrow shingle beach a tantalising distance away. But the current is dragging him past, not towards it.

With a final desperate surge he flails for the shore. His head swims and his vision begin to blur, and he involuntarily breathes in a gulp of seawater. His lungs burn as he chokes. He flounders, struggling to keep his mouth and nose above the water. Then just as his body is about to fail him he feels stones under his feet. He lunges forwards and stumbles, finding himself sprawled on a bed of rounded pebbles. A wave crashes over him, immersing him for a moment in frothing surf. Crawling on all fours he painfully clambers away from the water. He then collapses, shivering but on solid ground once more.

And you made the skill checks - think what I'm going to do to the others.

A wave dashes him against the rocks of the reef, the attached barnacles and shellfish making it like razor-sharp sandpaper that slices through his clothes and skin. Through the pain he flounders, gasping as he tries to keep his head above the water. He is dimly aware that the current is dragging him swiftly away from the wreck site, but the freezing water is deadening his limbs and he can barely put up any resistance even if he tried to. He drifts for an indeterminate time in the darkness, just struggling to breathe as his strength begins to fail. In some dwindling recess of his mind he dimly hears surf breaking, but perhaps it is just the pounding of the blood in his ears. The water closes over his head. Grulorg:

Spoiler:
Grulorg walks down the beach looking for survivors. There are a few items scattered about, some of it ordinary debris washed up from the sea like driftwood. But other objects are also there, and more are washing up as he makes his search - broken ship's timbers, barrels, crates. And then he spies something else - a body, lying spreadeagled and face down in the surf. Grulorg turns it over and recognises one of the sailors from the ship, even though he probably spoke barely two words to the man on the voyage. The man is dead, his empty eyes staring and his lips blue, either drowned or killed by the cold of the sea.

The beach seems to be in a cove, and a few hundred yards further in this direction the strand seems to run out and the cliffs meet the sea. However, crumpled up by some rocks just before this point, Grulorg notices another body. As he gets closer he realises from the clothing it must be Lheorvine. As Grulorg bends over to check for vital signs Lheorvine groans and his eyes flicker open.

Lheorvine:

The sound of the pounding waves is in Lheorvine's ears as he drifts through fugue-like dreams of darkness and cold. A bitter chill has sunk into his body and he shivers convulsively. Something grabs his shoulders. He coughs and realises that actually he isn't dreaming. Somehow he has made it to the shore. He is lying flat on his back and he can feel a bed of shifting pebbles through the wet fabric of his coat.

He opens his eyes. It is still dark. A frightening black shape looms over him but as he blinks he recognises Grulorg's not-so-friendly face peering intently into his own. Turning his head weakly he can see he is lying on a narrow shingle beach a few feet above where the surf surges and falls. A low cliff rises up behind.

"I have a tent, food, spare clothing, all sorts of stuff in there. Let's set it up and get a fire going; I'm half dead from cold, and the others are probably no better. We'll need to find the others first, though."

Grulorg prowls the beach. He finds no more bodies among the washed-up wreckage from the ship. As he walks to the far side of the cove he finds a sea cave running into the cliff. OOC:
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13. That puts me at 1 HP currently.

Blythe:

Spoiler:
About a hundred yards up the beach Blythe can see human figures down by the water. They carry no lights and in the dark she cannot make out who they are or what they are doing.

Ishmex, Lheorvine:

Spoiler:
There isn't anywhere you can light a fire on the beach without being seen given it is open and exposed. However, the warmth will allow you to warm up and lose the non-lethal damage.

The crackle of the fire provides some well-needed warmth and cheer and Ishmex and Lheorvine huddle close to dry their sodden clothes. Dawn is beginning to break, the sky overhead turning silver-pink, but the sun remains hidden.

Grulorg:

Spoiler:
Behind him, a flicker point of orange light tells Grulorg that Ishmex and Lheorvine have got a small fire going. Dawn is beginning to break, the sky overhead turning silver-pink, but the sun remains hidden.

Delmar:

Spoiler:
For the second time that day, Delmar regains consciousness.

It is dark. And warm. The air smells of smoke, and damp earth, and wet clothes. He is in some sort of hut, lying on a packed dirt floor, circular stone-built walls surrounding and a roof of wooden beams and turf over his head. In a central hearth a fire crackles, smoke filling the room until drifting lazily from a small hole in peak of the roof. The exit is a low doorway covered by a curtain of skins.

Someone coughs. There are several people in here. By the dim orange light of the fire he recognises some of the sailors from the ship. The majority seem to be carrying injuries - cuts and bruises mostly, although a few with what look like broken limbs - and most are sprawled motionless on the floor or huddled by the wall. They include Mister Ward, his long grey hair falling in bedraggled locks about his face, one of his eyes blacked and swollen.

"Are you alright?" Turning, Delmar finds Cedric leaning over him. He has a few scratches but otherwise seems to be uninjured.

Your pack was taken while you were unconscious.

Lheorvine:
"Thank goodness you found me. I would have frozen to death on this beach on my own. I don't have any of the right magics prepaired for survival. I hope the others made it to safety too. I couldn't see anything in the dark but it looks like light is coming soon."

Grulorg:
The half-orc narrows his eyes trying to ascertain if he can see anything at all floating in the water there. He considers calling out and holds off, until he sees the light flickering from behind him. If would be attackers are here, that light will attract attention more so than my voice.

He calls out, "BLYTHE!? DELMAR!? CEDRIC!? CAPTAIN!? Anyone there!" This is probably the first time he has used the full name of either of his companions, ever.

Grulorg:

Spoiler:
Grulorg's shout is lost against the sound of the wind and the waves. No one answers.

HP = 13/36 | AC = 19 (T 10) (FF 19) | F +7 | R +2 | W +2 | Init +2 | Per +5 (Darkvision)

Grulorg:
How dangerous does it appear to be to get down to where he is viewing and continue the search for survivors?

Grulorg:

Spoiler:
Not entirely sure what you are viewing. To go into the cave all you have to do is walk in.
