"...wait... is this... really over?!" says Berato... his brain not truly believing what his eyes are seeing.
Anthys

"Finally. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. We should see if the caster had any gear we can use. Vegazi, is this one of the Hell's Fury tribe?"
Elaril
|
With a grimace, Elaril moves to the charred remains of the caster and begins a distasteful search of his belongings with magically assisted vision.

"No, Vegazi, do not leave. We are stronger together, and we need to find out what the tribe is up to if we are to protect Arwyll Stead. I value your assistance and your company."
Vindlér Far-seer
|
"Aye, yer not gonna scare us off that easily lass," Vindler says warmly. "Besides, the townsfolk need to know that there are some of yer people who don't mean 'em harm. Else they'll never get past their prejudice."
I don't have any of those spells on my list (except Cure Light Wounds obviously). Elaril or maybe Berato would probably be the only ones either natively capable of casting them or using UMD with any chance of success.
As for the rest, loot is always good for cash I guess!

Ready! Did anybody get hurt in that fight that we need to heal up?
| GM Fez |
The travel back to the road and along your determined route is free of the oppressive watching that has followed you since you left Arwyll Stead. You reach your next destination, the Dessar Goat Ranch, around mid-day. In front of the homestead itself are four adults speaking quietly to each other while five children play around them. The children range from probably 2 or 3 to about 17, and they are the first to notice your approach.
Anthys
|
"Greetings in the name of the Inheritor, friends. I am Anthys, a soldier from Lastwall."
Anthys doesn't want to alarm the children, so chooses his words carefully.
"I bring news from Arwyll Stead. A situation has developed that means... that means it is a very good time to visit the Stead. To make sure that everybody stays safe."
He notices the adults speaking quietly, and says, "Is there something the matter? Perhaps we can help."
| GM Fez |
The eldest, a boy just reaching maturity, steps forward. "Sir, I am Liam. My parents and their work hands are trying to figure out what to do about our missing goats. See we have about 30 of them on this farm and some have been going missing over the past week or so. Let me get my pa to explain it." The boy heads back and gets the adults introducing his parents, Oliver and Adelaine Dessar, and the two farm hands, Blake and Reubel. Oliver describes exactly the situation that Liam was telling you. He agrees to go to Arwyll Stead, but says they'd be happier if their goats were corralled while the predator is out there, a process that can take as much as half a day.
Berato Aquilinus
|
"How much are 30 goats?" says Berato, reaching for his belt pouch.
Anthys
|
"Sure thing, Vegazi. It may have been one of the predators that the druid was controlling. But if not, do you think you can help us track it down?"
Vindlér Far-seer
|
"Aye, between Vegazi and I, there should be not trouble at all finding this predator. Then your goats can roam free range until ya get back. Nothin' better than free range meat," Vindler says.
Berato Aquilinus
|
"Good point Oliver. We'll round up your goats and escort you back to town. Where are the little misfits?"
| GM Fez |
The goats are scattered all around the hills nearby. The tracks of the predator are much easier to find It was a DC 10 survival check, which anyone can try untrained... and follow. They lead out to a small group of hillocks.
Elaril
|
Elaril follows closely behind his more ablebodied comrades while he keeps an eye out for this predator they are looking for.
A flash of movement catches his eye next to an entrance to a small cave. Calling his companions attention to it, he eventually makes out a lizard-like creature stalking forward upon two muscular legs, a mane of spikes running down its scaly back, seemingly preparing an ambush for your party.

Nope. Does Elaril's warning give me time to react, or am I flat-footed for a surprise round? Flat-footed AC is still pretty good - 25 with Shield Wall, more if it is evil and Lastwall Phalanx applies.
| GM Fez |
The creature is a Chupacabra. These notorious predators have an undeniable thirst for blood. Chupacabras prefer to prey upon the weak and slow, often watching potential prey from hiding for long periods before attacking. Spry and stealthy, they prefer to keep to areas of high grass and protective rock, their slightly reflective scales allowing them to blend in well with such surroundings.
With a preference for lone travelers and farm animals (particularly goats), chupacabras leave little evidence of their presence apart from the grisly blood-drained husks of their meals, often leading locals to believe a reckless vampire lives in the area.
They have the ability to pounce on their prey from large distances away and start draining blood just by holding on.
