I rolled 23 for prison research check. I know the five prisoners. I rolled again and got 30. The DC check 25 says one person needs to be selected to gain more information. I assumed my 30 was good enough.

The "one" in "one must be selected" is one of the 5 prisoners. Which prisoner would you like to research with that 30? It will take place on day 5 after the funeral.

SO close!

The fifth morning after the burial of the Professor, the small town of Ravengrow is rocked by the news that someone has once again defaced the stone memorial that honors the guards that gave their lives preventing the prisoners from escaping and thus saving the village from a night of even worse violence.

Kendra, disconsolately-I just can't believe this. Who in their right mind would do such a thing? I thought the first time it was maybe one of the juvenile delinquents of the town, but given the reaction to the first event I can't imagine they would try it again. EVERYONE in town has been upset over this; and worse, while the first time they killed a large rat to make the letter "V", this time they killed a dog and drew an "E". Killing rats makes sense to me, but killing dogs is just plain sick...

NO WORLD CUP UPDATES!!!!!!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Father Charlatan:

Father Charlatan: Of the

five notorious prisoners, only Father Charlatan was

not technically a murderer, yet his crimes were so

blasphemous that several churches demanded he be

punished to the full extent of Ustalavic law. Although he

claimed to be an ordained priest of any number of faiths,

Father Corvin was in fact a traveling con artist who used

faith as a mask and a means to bilk the faithful out of

money in payment for false miracles or cures. He became

known as Father Charlatan after his scheme was exposed

and his Sczarni accomplices murdered a half-dozen city

guards in an attempt to make good the group’s escape.

Day 5=whiff
Day 6=Success!
Day 7=whiff
Day 8=Success!
Day 9=Success!

So Randtam has succeeded in identifying 3 out of the 5 key criminals of Harrowstone by day 9.

The Splatter Man:

The Splatter Man (Hean Feramin): Professor

Feramin was a celebrated scholar of Anthroponomastics

(the study of personal names and their origins) at the

Quartrefaux Archives in Caliphas. Yet an accidental

association with a succubus twisted and warped his

study, turning it into an obsession. Feramin became

obsessed with the power of a name and how he could use

it to terrify and control. Soon enough, his reputation

was ruined, he’d lost his tenure, and he’d developed an

uncontrollable obsession with an imaginary link between

a person’s name and what happens to that name when the

person dies. Every few days, he would secretly arrange for

his victim to find a letter from her name written in blood,

perhaps smeared on a wall or spelled out with carefully

arranged entrails. Once he had spelled his victim’s name,

he would at last come for her, killing her in a gory mess

using a complex trap or series of rigged events meant to

look like an accident.

On the ninth day after the funeral Kendra comes home ashen faced, I can't believe it. Someone defaced the memorial AGAIN! This time they took a sow and its seven young piglets and used their blood to draw a "S" on the stones. Sheriff Caeller says he's going to start posting a watch of deputies to capture the culprit. I hope they catch him and lock him up, the fiend!

Rantdtam's findings to everyone about the mosswater mauler and the piper of illmarsh.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The Mosswater Marauder (Ispin Onyxcudgel)

Only 5 years before his hometown of Mosswater was

destined to be overrun and ruined by monsters from the

nearby river, Ispin Onyxcudgel was a well-liked artisan

and a doting husband. When he discovered his wife’s

infidelity, he f lew into a jealous rage and struck her dead

with his hammer, shattering her skull and his sanity with

one murderous blow. Wracked with shame and guilt, Ispin

became convinced that if he could rebuild his wife’s skull

she would come back to life—but unfortunately, he could

not find the last blade-shaped fragment from the murder

site. So instead, Ispin became the Mosswater Marauder.

Over the course of several weeks, the cunning dwarf

stalked and murdered nearly 20 people while searching for

just the right skull fragment. He was captured just before

murdering the daughter of a visiting nobleman from Varno,

and was carted off to Harrowstone that same night.

The Piper of Illmarsh (real name unknown):

Before he snatched his victims, the Piper taunted his

targets with a mournful dirge on his f lute. He preferred

to paralyze lone victims by dosing their meals with lich

dust and then allowed his pet stirges to drink the victims

dry of blood.

You can't identify the Piper's name from the records in the Town Hall or Church. His name might be recorded somewhere, but it's not in Ravengrow.

Your "Lopper" research roll will be for day 10.

Currently it is day 9.

"Does everyone remember the song that the girls were singing while they were skipping rope when we went to the town hall:

The SONG went: Put her body on the bed. Take a knife and lop her head. Watch the blood come out the pipe. Feeds the stirge, so nice and ripe. Drops of red so sparkly bright. Splatters spell her name just right. With a hammer killed his wife. Now he wants to claim your life. Tricksy father tells a lie. Listen close or you will die.

This song seems to be describing the 5 prisoners we are researching. The Piper use his stirges to suck the blood from his victims. The Splatter Man spells out the names of victims. The Mosswater Marauder killed his wife with a hammer. Tricksy father must refer to Father Charlatan.

I am guessing that when we get the research on the Lopper, we will find that he put his victims on a bed and lopped off their heads.

I don't know what it all means, but it sounds pretty damn evil and creepy."

The light of Sarenrae protects me; I fear no ghostly spirit. However, we should apprehend whomever is defacing the memorial and question them. Maybe they are in league with this Whispering Way? Also, they should not be allowed to continue to deface a public monument that holds such meaning to the people of Ravensgrow. Look how it has affected Kendra.

I knew that I was just testing you.

Can we set a trap by the statue to observe what or who has been defacing the statue. Could it be the ghost of the Splatterman, or someone impersonating his deeds?

Is there anywhere to hide near the memorial?

Kendra gives you some directions to the site and with Vraxel's skills you quickly navitate the half mile path that leads you down towards the river. There you find one of Ravengro's most distinctive landmarks-a 25 foot tall, moss covered stone statue that overlooks the river. The stature depicts a proud, muscular human man dressed in leathers and wielding a truncheon-a depiction of Warden Hawkran; so says the metal plaque at the base of the statue. There are a total of 25 other names-the guards who dided in the fire of 4661, as well as the warden's wife, Vesorianna. You can tell that the chest of the statue has been recently cleaned and there are ample blood stains near the statue where the animals were killed.

There are several large patches of shrubs and small trees surrounding the monument.

Hide out in one of the patches of shrubs and trees.

Randtam should research Vesorianna. Maybe that's the name being spelled out in blood.

The small knowledge I have already gleaned through my correspondence with the Professor was that the Warden's wife was at the prison, but nobody knows why. It sounds like she had no real reason to be there. I shall research this more.

Any bonuses for the check?

Give me a stealth check, and how long do you hide in the shrubs/trees.

The curiosity of the Warden having his wife at the prison is the only record of her being there. Her name remains a mystery.
