Osric follows the others into the tavern. "Leoni, what are the consequences here? Did their Mister just leave your guild? What recourse do you suggest?"
Leoni steeples his long fingers under his chin, thoughtful. "Their actions do not make sense. Why take such a risk, and not finish the job? Why run after such a futile attack?" He shakes his head. "As for the consequences, detective..."
Sidling up to your table, the bartender drawls, "Your pardons, sirs and lady, but many of you look a bit thirsty as it were, perhaps not being used to the steams like, and thought you might need more waters, yes?" Bowing, he places a tray of glasses down, and goes back to the bar, pouring a drink for the previously-unconscious customer.

Byron glances over at Leoni, after giving Osric a slight nod. "Seems like they're trying to finish the job now yes we'd better get out of here quickly do we run or try to be casual?"
Though he has been healed by Fiordelise, Leoni seems slightly dazed now, either from blood loss or the simple shock of being attacked. His hands shake as he says in a low voice, "Surely we must move now! Poisons and arrows. My eyes are still keen - support my legs and we will make haste!"

Round 1
3 successes, 1 failure this round
Leoni quietly, urgently whispers a long series of commands, leading you deep into the murky backstreets and alleys of the Steams. None of you have any idea where you are or where you are heading; the world has narrowed to an ever-shifting patch of street, twenty feet in front of you.
After Byron's slip, a dagger flies from the mist and grazes the alchemist's calf (2 damage). The sounds of pursuit seem to close in for a moment, but the party hangs together and the sounds fade...somewhat.
The cool sensation Byron's tea has been providing is beginning to wear off. Everyone but Fiordelise do a Fort Save DC 12; failure results in -2 on skill checks)

As they move through the mists, Osric keeps an eye out for incoming attacks and pitfalls.
Leoni's voice, still low, grows more and more tense as you all thread your way through the endless misty maze. Though the sound of pursuit never disappears entirely, no other silhouettes appear; Byron's bomb seems to have made them more cautious.
"We are close - just squeeze into the alley on your right - now!" Osric spots the alley, more of a crack in the wall, and the party pushes through to the other side...
and, suddenly, the steam begins to dissipate. It is like recovering from blindness - the world unfolds around you, in a forest of ratty tents and cracked stucco houses. The smell of rotten fruit indicates you are on the southern edge of the Steams, near Garbage Alley.
You are all free of the Steam Slums, seemingly free of pursuit for the moment, and, in the frigid temperatures away from the hot steam, freely shivering in your armor.
It is eleventh candle.
As you continue away from the Steams in no particular direction (except away from attack), Leoni seems distraught, far away from the calm self he showed you in his home. He addresses Osric. "I must confess I do not know what the best recourse is, detective. The Mister headquarters is located within the Steams. The way to safety lies in the middle of danger."

"Assuming of course that they don't have agents in the guard too," Byron interjects.
Leoni is still reeling from the stress of being attacked, having relied on the Mister neutrality for so long. He'll go along with whatever you guys say. If anyone seconds going to the guards, that's where we'll go, or you can hole up somewhere else. I'll update tomorrow.

For the moment, the one thing agreed upon by all five of you is that getting away from the Steams is the best course of action. As you head east, the cold of the day surrounds you fully, like the Dead Witch's cruel embrace. It is fortunate there is no wind today, or your damp clothes may have been a real danger, rather than just a discomfort.
As Garbage Alley becomes Cleaver Street, the scents of old, rotten meat and not-quite rotten meat mingle together, with faint whiffs blood and livestock mixed in. The mundane haggling of price and quality that echoes across the streets seems unreal after your heart-pounding escape from death in the gray-shrouded mazes of the Steams.
To the north lies the headquarters of the Dims Watch, as well as the office of the Coal of the Dims. (roughly speaking, the mayor of this district, as Hearth is too big to have one leader)
To the east and south, it would be a quick jaunt to simply get out of the Dims entirely, and perhaps lose any potential pursuers in the Market.
Each of you - choose which way you want to go, even if it is just a simple OOC declaration.

"If you think the Watch will help then I'll go along with you Obedie but let's keep our eyes and wits sharp just in case."
After a quarter-candle of cautious travel, you arrive at the Dims Watch headquarters. As with many buildings in the Dims, the wood is not entirely straight, and could use a fresh coat of paint. Above the slightly out-of-true door rests the copper-inlaid insignia of the Dims Watch: a candle topped by a bell-shaped snuffer.
Inside, a bored-looking private is talking--and mostly ignoring--an ifrit merchant wearing a shabby, ill-fitting robe. "Some muscle-bound bark-head knocks over my cart and you say you can't do anything? What do my taxes pay for, young man?"
The private--who Odebie recognizes, but whose name he cannot quite recall--gives the merchant a polite apology. His eyes wander, looking for a fellow guardsman to help him, but no one else is in the foyer at the moment.
Male LG Oread Paladin (Stonelord) 5 | HP: 16/54 | AC: 17 (13 Tch, 14 Fl) | CMB: +8, CMD: 19 | F: +6, R: +1, W: +6 | Init: +2 | Perc: +10, SM: +9 | Speed 20ft | Stonestrike: 5/5 | Lay On Hands 2/4 | Defensive Stance: 6/8 | Active conditions: Fatigued, 3 rnds remaining
Still half-carrying Leoni, Odebie steps past the merchant and addresses the desk-private. "Where's the captain? We need to speak to him, immediately."

The private looks at you, sees something in your eyes, and says, "I'll go to his office right now, Corporal." The rookie forgets to salute as he leaves.
The shabby merchant turns around and sneers at you. "Oh, and I suppose whatever happened to you is so much more important than the destruction of my livelihood. Typical corruption and ineptitude." He sits down in a nearby chair with a loud flop and a theatrical sigh.
A few minutes later, the private returns not with the captain, but one of his lieutenants. He is a slender sylph, seemingly made of twigs and tissue paper. His long hair, combed to a glossy black sheen, frames a narrow chin and a small smile. Lieutenant Dove.
In a high, pouting voice, Dove says, "Corporal Doughby, I regret the captain is not available. The...young private here suggested your situation was most urgent, and I am disinclined to disagree with him. Would you do me the kindness of bringing your...Mister friend to my office so you can explain?" He looks behind Odebie, his head cocked in a distinctly bird-like gesture. "And these others? You keep most interesting company, Corporal. Most interesting indeed."

"If it's permissible I'll come along too."

Dove leads you through the hustle and bustle of the overworked, underpaid Dim Watch. Clerks, barristers, criminals, and guardsmen alike crowd through the uncomfortably narrow halls. The rattle of cuffs, the scratch of inkpens, and the murmur of conversations float around you as you all pass various offices and public rooms. The smell of sweat and very bad coffee permeates the entire building.
The lieutenant takes you up a flight of stairs, trilling and whistling to himself in the way that only sylphs can. The second story of the Dims Watch headquarters is slightly nicer than the first, in that there are no dangerous-looking cracks or holes in the walls. Dove gives a slight bow as he shows you into his private office, long hair hanging from his shoulders.
Dove's office is as shabby as the rest of the building, but he has a desk and exactly one chair to his name. The desk is piled with papers, paper weights, and a few faded pictures of sylphs which may be Dove's family.
The slight sylph sits down primly in the rickety wooden chair. Twisting the gold and silver rings which adorn his fingers, Dove says, "The Steam Watch shared a report of some goings-on at a Flower Shop earlier this morning - would this have anything to do with that little bit of drama? And why, Corporal, is there a recently wounded Mister in our midst, as it were? Such oddities could be...unhealthy to a beleaguered organization such as ours."

"Unhealthy indeed, I've naught but ill tidings. Someone's started a war, and to Sky's rest with Mister neutrality." Briefly, he gives Dove the highlights of the afternoon.
Dove's face becomes still. He stops twisting his rings, and lays his hands flat on the table. "Grave news indeed. A Mister hired by Gasp dealers breaking the neutrality..."
He stands up. "I will inform the captain, but for now you must go. He is an immeasurably valuable witness, and the risks with an...eclectic group such as our beloved Watch are too high. Take him somewhere. Do not tell me where."
Opening a drawer, he takes out a small vial and hands it to Odebie. "This will render the Mister invisible for a short while; long enough to get out of the Dims, at any rate. Or keep him in the Dims, just take him somewhere safe."
Dove slaps his hand on the desk, his rings making a loud bang. "We'll get those bastards, Corporal. We shall make them pay blood for every sylph's breath they have stolen. Now go."
Male LG Oread Paladin (Stonelord) 5 | HP: 16/54 | AC: 17 (13 Tch, 14 Fl) | CMB: +8, CMD: 19 | F: +6, R: +1, W: +6 | Init: +2 | Perc: +10, SM: +9 | Speed 20ft | Stonestrike: 5/5 | Lay On Hands 2/4 | Defensive Stance: 6/8 | Active conditions: Fatigued, 3 rnds remaining
Nodding, Odebie takes the potion and steps out of the office. Gesturing to the others, he finds a place where they can speak without being disturbed.
"Do any of you have a good place to bring Leoni? My own home is filled with people, including small children. Also, they're all oreads."
Speaking much more softly, he also hands the potion to Byron. "Take a look at that, would you?"

"Having anyone else come to my workshop would be suspicious much less four other people so I don't think it should be me and I don't know of any other places," he states as he makes his inspection.
Osric shakes his head. "I can't vouch one hundred percent for the other tenants in my building. I'd rather not take the chance. My vote is for Ms. Incarna's place." You can almost hear the formal punctuation in his voice, as if he is writing a report on her.

Leoni walks a few steps, flexing his knee. "Indeed I can, Corporal. Let us be gone from the Dims for the moment." The Mister seems to have regained some of his composure.
When you are all ready to leave...
Unstopping the small vial, Leoni drinks the potion with a quick movement of his witch's apple. Unseen mists gather about him, slowly fading him from sight. Softly, he says, "Lead on, gentlemen and lady. Quite a juxtaposition - my safety is in your hands. I shall whistle sharply if I find myself separated or otherwise in trouble."

"Invisibility is nice but they can recognize the rest of us it'll just keep Leoni safe so we must be wary," he chatters unnecessarily as the group sets out.
Please direct character's previous history here.

Just dotting in.
Perhaps our GM could create the gameplay thread and we can put in a stealth dot.
(If you post to a gameplay thread and immediately delete the post, your alias gets added to the Characters tab and the game shows up in your Campaigns tab for both your primary account and the alias. This makes it much easier to track new posts.)
I'll be posting soon with a more detailed background for Osric.
Good idea.

Do we want to fill in any more shared history details between Osric and Byron, or does just leaving it at "They sometimes talk alchemy when they run into each other while buying supplies" sound good? For myself, I think leaving it there, with them being just casual acquaintances, would be good, but I'd be willing to add more detail if you'd like.

I tend to like to keep shared backgrounds vague at the beginning. More like an outline.
That lets us do the "remember that one time when" thing later without contradicting what's already out there.
Just my $.02.
I also like to write up posts and any large blocks of text in a text editor and then copy and paste it into the forum when it's done. Fewer lost posts that way.

Hello there,
Osric - Fiordelise's brother is a bit of a decadent wastrel, you could have run into him through your investigations - perhaps he has used Gasp in the past?
Not sure about a link to Byron and I'm not clear on Obedie's background.

Male LN sylph investigator (empiricist) 1 | HP: 7/7 | AC: 15 (T: 13, F: 12) | CMB: +2, CMD: 15 | F: -1, R: +5, W: +3 | Init: +3 | Perc: +6, SM: +5 | Speed 35ft | Inspiration (1d6): 4/4 | Extracts: 1st 2/2 | Active conditions: None.
Here is a short background for Osric:
Osric Ferret was born seventy seven years ago in Light. He was the second child, followed by three more. His parents worked helping to form the mithral golems for the war effort.
Upon coming of age, Oswin (the eldest child, nearly ten years Osric's senior) left to fight the Darkness. Within two years, his older brother was dead. The fighting had been rough and to keep up with the Ifrit and Oread warriors, Oswin had turned to Soot.
Soot changed Oswin, making him take foolhardy risks. When he wasn't on Soot, he was dark and depressed, prone to violent outbursts. Oswin went deep into debt to support his habit. Eventually he could not repay his debts and the drug runners took their payment in flesh. Oswin breathed his last breath creating a dose of Gasp.
Since that time Osric has been the grim protector of his family. He gave up his alchemical studies to train with the town guard in Light. Once his younger siblings had grown, he began ranging further afield from home in search of criminals.
Several years ago, his travels brought him to Hearth. He found the Dims in need of law. Finding lodging was easier than he had expected. Since then, work has been steady, if not exactly plentiful. He continues to search out leads to drug trafficking, especially Gasp.
Previous Relationships we have so far, including from the recruitment thread:
--Osric and Byron: casual acquaintances from run-ins at alchemy shops and such
--Osric and Fiordelise: Osric's investigations into Gasp brought him into contact with Fiordelise's brother, and by association briefly with Fiordelise as well.
--Osric and Obedie: Both naturally part of the legal system, maybe were involved in the same case once (either same side or opposing sides)
Let me know if there are any objections to these. I also like the idea of keeping things as more an outline for right now, to be developed IC later if necessary.
As I mentioned earlier, we don't have to force a connection that isn't there (such as Fiordelise and Byron, who run in very different circles)
Looks like Osric is the lynchpin, which really makes sense as an investigator goes where the cases take him regardless of social niceties.
Also, judging from his post last night, I'm guessing Obedie may need a few days to recover from life. I know that delay = doom in PbP, so I'm planning on starting the campaign tomorrow night regardless. I'll likely be putting his introduction on hold until I hear from him.

Would you mind putting this in your profile too? This is good stuff, and I want to make sure I have easy access to it.
Fiordelise, could you put remaining/total rounds of raging song in your tagline, along with remaining/total 1st level spells?
Osric, Byron, and Fiordelise: your profiles look good. Except for the minor previous comments to Osric and Fiordelise, you guys are good to go.
Obedie, I need to see a more thorough background. I'd prefer to have your character sheet as just text and spoilers in your profile, but the bigger priority is to get a complete background (and your background, personality, goals, NPC, description, etc should definitely be in your profile, if nothing else).
Even if you don't have time to post a full update right now, a quick confirmation of interest and estimate on when you might be posting would be appreciated.

Also, knowing Osric from the job works just fine for me.
1) Hopefully the context makes sense, but for those who I wrote something like (chemical), that's an encouragement to come up with it yourself, or, if it doesn't matter to you, we can leave it unnamed.
2) Where do you all live in Hearth?
--Osric, do you have your office in the Dims, "in the belly of the beast?"
--Byron, do you live in the slums outside of Hearth, or do you live in the Dims?
--Fiordelise, given your background, I would imagine your family has a 'modest' (to be generous) house that is right on the edge of the Obsidian Mansions.
--Obedie, there are certainly some oread neighborhoods within the Dims. Would you live there?

Yes, a once modest, but well appointed townhouse, which is now notable for the spaces on the walls where the artwork used to sit, and the furnishings that emulate the styles of the nobility while being of much cheaper construction...

I figured Pilgar lets him use a spare room (perhaps even an actual sitting room) at his boarding-house as an office. Close enough to the Dims that the disadvantaged can reach it, but not close enough to discourage more affluent clients.
Besides, unbeknownst to Osric, Pil can eavesdrop and get a heads-up on anything that involves his cartel. So he doesn't charge extra for the use.
Cool, thanks for the answers and the game-play posts everyone!

I notice that you've been using Italian for speaking in non-common. Are there preferred languages that you would like mapped for forum translations. I've seen some games that use spoiler tags to denote languages that some party members might not have. For instance:
"Mae hwn yn brawf, prawf os mynnwch."

Thanks for the question! As you've noticed, Ifrit is definitely Italian and it's pretty common for ifrits to throw in certain words of their own language, even when having a conversation in Common. I know that most Sylphs would almost never do this with their own language, especially in the company of other ifrits. Undines and Oreads, it probably varies between individuals.
As for the other languages:
High Ifrit is Latin. I'm planning on using Vietnamese for Undine. Benthic would best be represented with Simplified Chinese. I wanted to do a Native American language for Oread, but let's keep it simple with something that's on Google translations - Zulu. Sedime is Afrikaans. Irish for Sylph. Welsh for Maker Script.
Arabic for Geni. Amharic for Eleme.
Oh, and this is by no means a requirement. It's fine to just write "In Sylph" before a spoiler.
"Campaign Info" has been updated with the following:
Language formatting, such as Arabic for Geni (in pbp formatting spoiler)
Clothing (in society spoiler)
Servants (gods spoiler)
Other religions (gods spoiler)
Oread rituals/superstitions/tribal structure (added to the Oread document link under society spoiler)

Thank you, sorry for the inconvenience.
No problem at all! Seems to work the exact same as Drawings, so no issues here.
I didn't mention this before (there are always little kinks to work out), but could everyone get in the habit of mechanically describing actions that aren't entirely clear? For instance, I'm not sure if Byron is holding an action, delaying, or choosing not to act in Round 1 beyond readying a bomb. (not trying to call you out by any means, just a convenient example)
This will help me know when characters are done with their round's worth of actions or not, so I can comfortably move on to the next round.

Fiordelise, I didn't answer your question from the gameplay thread - Latin is fine for your magic. I'm very open to flavor stuff like that, even though you don't "know" the language.
Also, totally loving the Italian idioms you've been using.
It strikes me that with two of our characters working in or with law enforcement, it would be wise to expand some of the hierarchy of the guard (at least in Hearth; probably changes between the great cities)
Commandant - in charge of all the various Watches (Hearth is way to big for just one Captain to be in charge of it all)
Captain - leader of one Watch (such as the Temple Watch, or the Dims Watch)
Lieutenant, 2nd Lieutenant, and Cadets - officers under the Captain
Warrant Officers, Sergeant Majors, Sergeants, Corporals, and Privates make up the enlisted men.
I'd like Odebie to be one up from Private in recognition that he's been at this several months - how does Corporal sound?
I'll put this in the Hearth Info page later tonight.

Quick question before I post: Is v'Manco my direct superior or do the various districts have separate chains of command? In other words, do I have to do what he tells me to do?
Thanks for the question. Separate chains of command. You do not have to follow what he says.
However, he could make your life difficult indirectly, by virtue of being a nobleman and having a higher rank than you.
