Sorry, fiddling with Avatars, wasn't happy with the one I had, not that happy with this one either.

I've also added a link to my dropbox character sheet version (think that should be viewable), in my profile.

Realised I'd taken Ride twice, so I swapped one of them over to Psychology (which is effectively sense-motive and is not psychoanalysis - for those not familiar with CoC conventions).

True History if you would like it! Your character also knows the following on an extreme Mechanical Repair, Operate Hv. Machinery, or history roll:

I must have misread this, so since Angus rolled a 46 on history {which he though hit since he had a 50) and a 67 on machinery (which he thought he missed because he had a 40) are both actually a misses because all three were "extreme." I though "true" meant the actual number.

apparently "True History" mean "true History" and has nothing to do with a "History roll"... Sorry I will attempt to do better.

"Attention: That is NOT a zeppelin or any other form of lighter than air dirigible! It is a large floaty cigar shaped thing a-ma-jig!"

there, all better ;)

Violet's Map!

Oh man I can see how that was confusing on my part!

I'll start putting little

rules tutorial:
silly! No rules apply on the discussion thread!

spoilers in my posts till everyone gets the rules. And Eloise can help if we get something wrong:)

Violet's Map!

I think we can assume our heros find eachother downstairs in the Hotel Cafe at breakfast. Coffee and a morning paper sound good? Well, except for James who is going to sleep through the game in his same cloths, hahaha!

Just kidding ya, James.

Lol :P Sounds good!

Violet's Map!

Whew glad you can take a joke! I almost edit-erased it...but figured you were man enough ;)

Violet's Map!

Cthulhu is a lot of investigation at times, which is fun, but in PBP can bog down. In one of my other games, we have the 'tag' system... How it works:

You make a post and expect a reaction both from Phaedra and James so you'd add, in OOC, tag Phaedra and James... It works well and generally forces more interaction! And can also be used to nudge GM along, which I don't mind at all. Let me know if you wanna try it.

Happy Friday everyone!

Eloise

Hmm I typed a reply earlier and it didn't seem to take... or maybe I just got distracted before I actually hit Submit. Either way I apologise.

Violet's Map!

That confusion between Tom an Angus is TOTALLY my fault guys. I wasn't clear about the rooms, earshot range, distances, ect. So I just updated the map, at least how I see us arranged in MY head based on everyones posts!

HAHA I'll bet each of you has somethign TOTALLY different in your minds though huh!? See? Keepers fault. Totally keepers fault.

@ Violet, in post 67 Angus pulled up a chair at James' table, so the four would be at table together.

@ Tom, sorry about the misunderstanding. When you said your name in introduction, the way I pictured it in my head was that you introduced yourself to everyone and then turned to Atum and invited him along, then continued talking to the others. But I made the same mistake thinking that Atum had also introduced himself to us and then answered you question. So apparently wrong on both counts.

Violet's Map!

Gotcha. Map updated.

Eloise

Dream-Self?

Violet's Map!

Whoa, sweet graphic find! I wish Paizo allow photo uploads.

Eloise

No idea what the comic it's tied to is like, the cover came up on a pinterest binge.

Violet's Map!

Okay folks, I know there is a LOT of fun to be had in this game, it's a great module. But due to the way this module needs character interaction to solve the mystery I'd really like to ask that we start using this TAG system.

The House Rule is: If your character says something and either the player or the character is expecting an answer, you write tag [character expected to answer] at the bottom of the post.

The rational: in pbp characters FREQUENTLY ask rhetorical question or say something just for dramatic effect. But just as often those questions/comments the character/player is expecting a respons... But it's IMPOSSIBLE to tell the difference. It's not that people are not paying attention, it's just that the medium is poor for natural dialogue. But I've seen this tag system correct this in two games and I'd like to try it, if that's okay?

Will do!

sure, I will try and remember.

Violet's Map!

Good evening everyone! Tonight while we wait to see what you guys do with a dead victorian waitress (hopefully nothing gross!) I'd like to introduce you to three Call of Cthulhu 7th edition rules that I believe you will find helpful...

Violet's Map!

HELPFUL RULE #1

IDEA ROLLS - At any time during the game if you get stuck you may make an IDEA ROLL, which is simply a roll against your INT score. This of course means your character takes a few minutes to think think think about the situation really hard. If successful the player will suddenly have a flash of insight, or idea, which shall be helpful to them.

Violet's Map!

HELPFUL RULE #2

PUSHING DICE - If you can justify it through your investigator’s actions, you can “Push” a failed skill roll (like the ones you just failed). Pushing a roll allows you to roll the dice a second time. However, the stakes are raised. If you fail a second time the Keeper gets to inflict a dire consequence upon your character.

Example: You are trying to lever open the heavy stone door of a crypt. The Keeper decides this is very difficult and asks for a STR roll, specifying that a ‘hard success’ is required. You roll the dice but the result shows that you have failed, as you rolled above half your investigator’s STR. You ask if you can push the roll, stating that your character is using a spade to lever the door. The Keeper permits a second roll, but warns you that if you fail this roll not only will the door still be closed but ‘something‘ may hear you and could be coming for your blood!

Combat rolls may not be pushed.

Violet's Map!

HELPFUL RULE #3

ADVANCEMENT - when you successfully roll a given skill, put a check mark in the box next to it on your investigator sheet. You can only get one check per skill at a time. At the end of the scenario, your Keeper will tell you to “roll for skill increases.” At this time, roll percentage dice against any checked skills. If you roll over the value of the skill, you can then add 1D10 points to the skill’s value. In other words, the more you know about something, the harder it is to learn anything new or get any better.

Example: Brian makes successful use of his Spot Hidden skill during play and so ticks the box next to that skill on his investigator sheet. After the scenario is completed, the Keeper asks Brian to roll for skill increases. Brian’s Spot Hidden skill is 45%. He rolls 43 on the percentage dice. No improvement is made. If he had rolled 73 he would be gaining 1D10 Spot Hidden skill points.

Violet's Map!

So I hope that gives your characters some more options right away and makes the game more fun. Will post more rules if they become relevant!

Violet's Map!

Keep on RPing by all means! However, I want to explain what just happend with this poor fellow's sanity rolls. He's BEYOND lucky that his mind didn't just crack leaving him drooling on the floor before you. These next few rules I'm about to explain are one of the big things that makes Cthulhu so creepy and fun:D

Violet's Map!

SANITY RULE #1

FAILING A SANITY ROLL CAUSES YOU TO LOSE CONTROL OF YOUR NEXT ACTION - This hotel manager made his sanity roll (he rolled a 4 which is lower than his Sanity Score of 47), so he didn't do anything crazy. But IF you ever fail a sanity roll, regardless of how much or little sanity you lose, the Keeper gets to take control of your characters very next action. This might be pulling the trigger on a gun your holding, or screaming out load while you are all sneaking through a haunted house.

Violet's Map!

SANITY RULE #2

LOSING 5 OR MORE SANITY POINTS IN A SINGLE ROLL CAN SHATTER A PERSONS MIND - So his roll was for 5/3d6. Since he passed his roll he only lost 5 pts of sanity instead of 3d6. But losing 5 or more sanity points in a single roll is perilous! Such a character must immediately make an INT roll. If they FAIL the int roll (as this guy just did by rolling 100!) then it's actually GOOD for the character. It means they blocked out the event, or just not fully comprehended it.

However, if they PASS the INT roll, then they've fully comprehended what it is they've just seen and it SHATTERS their mind in to TEMPORARY INSANITY, for 1d10 hours. And that's nasty cause they start seeing things and all kinds of sh&t! Also, at that point, you Add the number of sanity points you just lost to your Cthulhu Mythos score. You are now aware that the world isn't all nice and pretty, but dark cosmic Lovecraftian horrors exist, just behind the veil!!! And Finally, if you roll a 9 or 10 on that 1d10 to determine the number of hours you are temporarily insane, than a PHOBIA or MANIA is permenantly added to your character sheet...

So as you can see, this hotel manager is ONE LUCKY COOKIE.

Clear as mud? TAG new Cthulhu players?

Violet's Map!

Storyteller Shadow is still working on a character, he's been swamped. But we can plunk him in wherever when he's done. Hope everyone is having a good week!

I'm headed off for training for the next three weeks. I'll have access to the internet, but it might get irregular for a couple of days at a time. I should be fine on posting but if I miss a post, this is why. Sorry for the last minute notice, they changed it around several times and it became official that I was shipping out just a few days ago.

'Shipping out' sounds very official, good luck with the training, I don't think we are moving so fast that you will miss anything. Violet is always very understanding!

Violet's Map!

Updates tomorrow morning.

Stay safe on your travels Tom! It's a crazy world out there...

Eloise

Apologies for the quiet weekend, had unexpected guests, and I've been struggling with Paizo site, don't know if it's their end or mine, or maybe something is thrashing in R'Lyeh and scrambling the connection across the Atlantic.

The Paizo site has been horrible for me all weekend too. Just had to give up on it until it stopped being so frustrating.

Shadow's Status

Luck 3d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 4) = 12

Violet's Map!

Everyone, we have a new player ready to go. He's a Scotland Yard Police officer, perhaps on duty at the Museum, or perhaps visiting as part of his own investigation into the same strange things you've been experiencing. Welcome Shadow!

BACKGROUND SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ THE THREAD:
We are in a museum full of machines from the early industrial revolution on display. The PCs have been having weird dreams about a steampunk city full of monstrous machines, and even some hints that machines have been coming alive to kill people in the waking world! They've arrived at the museum on a tip to investigate a certain machine: somewhere among the display cases is the invention of an early eccentric Industrialist, Mr. Lester Hemsdales. His "Dream Machine", is suppose to be here, and may very well be a doorway to the steampunk realm.

And it just turned out that the young women who is giving the tour looks exactly like the girl who saved the PCs death during their dreams. But first, there's a fight that's 'bout to happen. Welcome to the game!

Sorry about the lack of posts. I am keeping up on the thread, I've just had some very long days without much time at a computer. Hopefully my schedule evens out in the next couple days!

Thanks for the opportunity Violet!

Violet's Map!

Whoa, that's a sexy mustache, Howy!!! May I call you "Howy"? Haha!

No worries Tom! As long as you are having fun:)

Indeed, Howy the Stache... :-)

Due to a change in responsibilities at work, and my father-in-law beginning a regular extended chemotherapy, I feel I need to step away from the games I am playing in. I apologize that it will delay and alter the games. After having played In some games over a year and a half I assumed I would be able to continue the games through to their finish but real life has raised its ugly head. Thanks for running the game. Good luck and good gaming to all.

Eloise

Oh, Welcome and Farewell then.

Does your Avatar intentionally look like Devlin Waugh? Or is that just my passion for semi-obscure comic book characters showing through?

Tis your passion for semi-obscure comic book characters showing through. What comic book is that? I am a pretty avid comic reader still, never heard of the character.

Edit: Just realized we are in a few games together and you play in my Star Wars game as Siar, these boards are a small world after all :-)

Hope all goes well for his recovery.

Violet's Map!

Busy day! Updates tomorrow morning...

Violet's Map!

We shall begin our first Cthulhu combat after Howy is introduced and any last minute bathroom breaks for your characters, haha!

Eloise

From the pages of 2000AD, Devlin Waugh, the renowned homosexual vampiric vampire slayer, nominally in the same setting as Judge Dredd. It's really quite a bizarre read. I used to be an avid reader of 2000AD in the 90s

Ah, I have read a great deal of Judge Dredd but never 2000AD, I will ave to check it out.

Violet's Map!

I'm thinking about giving Phaedra one of these once we get to the Steam City in a bit, whaddya think??

Eloise

As part of my busy weekend, I attended the Leeds Steampunk market last Sunday, which was interesting. My love of Steampunk has always been from afar previously...

I am now familiar with the rules of tea or coffee duelling, have about a dozen business cards for steampunk businesses and am planning to attend their next event with more elaborate costuming.

I only wish I had the wherewithal to have taken more pictures.

Poor unprepared Eloise, if only she'd studied this Umbrella combat

Eloise want to be a member of the "Parasol Protectorate"? :)
(fun series to read)

As for that thing GM Clocksworth, I cannot decide if it belongs in Steam City combat or Steam City Gyno office.

I've had a bit of a busy week, but I'm a bit confused. Can James go, or do I wait until next round? He may or may not pull out a revolver, even with a copper in his vicinity :P
