Sorry all, I thought that I had killed it with that first shot.
Sorry, got busy at work today, and you guys cruised through that! Good rolls on my behalf again, GM Kalizar
Conner stands with his comrades.
Let's get the prisoner and go to the Mill to sort this out.
DM Kalizar
Sounds like we got the go ahead Sir Gareth.. COme let us retrieve Haddix and put these fiends to rest.. And with the bird getting away i'd say we should go sooner than later.."
Rutcher is willing to spare two troopers momentarily from the inn, one to find a watch patrol to observe the mill, the other to confirm with the Tower that you have the authority to grant Haddix a reprieve, in case the Magister has ordered him restrained or incapacitated.
On the journey, the trooper, Deels again, lets you know some basic information about the mill and the miller's home. The mill has two exterior entrances on the ground floor, a set of double doors that lead to the bagging floor, another that leads through the grist gears, a cramped and tiny place full of machinery. An interior door used to lead into the miller's home, but after a fire several years back blew through it into the home, he had it bricked over. There is a second set of doors upstairs, one that leads into the grist room, where the great stones turn and work the grain, another accessed by pulleys from the freight yard to where raw grain is stored. The upper floor is divided from the lower, accessible via grain or flour chutes or an interior freight elevator. A set of stairs on the ground floor leads to the basement storage area. He did not know about the river entrance Angel and friends found.

Rewind: the second paragraph of the previous post hasn't happened.
Trooper Rutcher, resuming authority, turns to Sir Gareth. Justicar, if you feel these suspects are in fact the party or parties responsible for the death of Canoness Y'dey, as well as the other crimes you have reported this day, I ask you now, render your judgement here before withnesses on the accused Carlson Haddix. dramatic pause
Rutcher listens for Sir Gareth's reply, while setting the monk's gear upon the bar, assuming the verdict of not guilty. I was not in favor of your commission, and may disagree with your methods, but you were duly set and so duly charged. Sir Romidar saw better than myself.
Moving aside from the gear and the door, sheathing his blade, My place is here, my men no match for the things you have reported. It is up to you and your blade to pass sentence upon those you have deemed are guilty. I would suggest you collect this Haddix, under your warrant of course, and seek these suspects before they have chance to flee or cause more harm upon the folk of Hommlet. Let him prove himself in the test of arms. Saluting, he adds, May Iomedae's light blind them to your approach.
Sir Gareth stows his shortbow and returns to the inn clapping Conner on the shoulder. He picks up and sheathes his greatsword. He kneels confirms that Merodisen is dead. He 'casts' Detect Poison from his brooch on her. He then searches her for anything else hidden.Bluff take 10+14=24, Wisdom check for Detect Poison: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12, and Perception take 20+11=31
While searching, he replies to Angel, "Yes, the evil beings at the mill. That hunting expedition is less urgent now, since they have been alerted by the mechanical bird. The bird might signal them to leave town. Plus, we have urgent priorities that must be addressed here."
He gets up and walks around the inn continuing. "Yes, Trooper Rutcher, my judgment is that the accused Carlson Haddix is not guilty of the murder of Canoness Y'dey. I can present the evidence to the Elders when they return."
D'Orionus pauses within reach of the red head to prevent her from killing herself, for that to be digested, and for dramatic effect, "Now we know that the murder of Canoness Y'dey was a conspiracy by zealots willing to kill themselves before surrender. So our first priority is to understand how and why this young lady (red head) drugged Carlson in his supper last night." He's ready to grab her if she does anything but sit there and confess.

D'witt Hirshue
"Conner, destroy it! Angel, watch the red-head!"
D'witt looks confused at Sir Gareth's commands. He glances from the knight to the paladin. Pistol still in hand but not raised, just ready, he moves to stand by the table where Mrs. Gundigoot and the rest of the staff are sitting. He places a hand on Sharla shoulder gently. "I'm sure we can sort this out." He tries to reassure her.
D'Orionus pauses within reach of the red head to prevent her from killing herself, for that to be digested, and for dramatic effect, "Now we know that the murder of Canoness Y'dey was a conspiracy by zealots willing to kill themselves before surrender. When Sir Gareth rejoins them inside D'witt looks at the knight. "What are you talking about? What proof do you have she did that?"
"She served Carlson his supper in his room last night. Besides, him saying that he awoke disorientated in time to be arrested, but we all saw the poor man barely negotiate the stairs this morning. Therefore, drugged. Unless, of course the cook wants to volunteer the information." Sir Gareth looks at Mrs. Gundigroot believing she is innocent.
DM Kalizar
Marta Gundigoot stands up indignant at the accusations that herself, or Sharla were involved in this conspiracy. The night that man came in, we had closed early if you recall. Meridosen had finished up the kitchen duty so she could spend time with her lover Chatrilon. She poured the last of the stew for the man they accused of murder. Sharla merely delivered it, as I asked her to do. Looking to Rutcher, I may have to accept that this manh is Justicar, but I will not have him here insulting my own with wild claims with no bearing to truth. We've known Sharla and Ilsa their whole lives. Meridosen drifted through though I still cannot believe all this. She begins to break down and cry, looking at d'Orionus with red rimmed eyes, Get your things and get out of here, you and yours are not welcome at the inn any longer. You'll not be served under my roof again. Ostler Gundigoot moves over to console her, patting Sharla on the shoulder, glaring at Sir Gareth. Have you not caused enough pain today? Go on, search as you must, though I demand Rutcher watch. Then get out. Looking at the others, Get out you and anyone else that supports you.
D'witt Hirshue
D'witt frowns when Marta Gundigoot breaks down into tears. He steps back as Ostler comes to her side. When he tells them that they are not welcome there anymore he nods reluctantly.
"As you wish."
He looks at Sharla again. "I'm sorry. I guess that meal will have to wait." D'witt starts to walk away but pauses and looks back at the Gundigoots, then Sharla. "This may be awkward to ask, but if someone could show us which side of the room was her's? We don't want to intrude where we shouldn't."
As he walks past Sir Gareth to join the others. He waits for guardsman Rutcher to Join them and head up to the girls' room. "There is a greater evil at work here. Personal ventures will have to wait."
Once inside and they determine which area belonged to Meridosen he helps search through the dead woman's belongings.
Perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

Sir Gareth d’Orionus
Sir Gareth replies, "Meridosen poured the last of the stew for Carlson? And her lover was Chatrilon Unosh, the other one we seek? Well, that explains it, then. I sincerely apologize for the accusation." He nods in acceptance.
"It's unfortunate for you to feel that way, Madame Gundigroot. Please direct your ire toward me and not my companions. They, like Rutcher, are not to blame for the accusation. I am."
He turns and heads upstairs to search the girls' room, Carlson's, and his own for good measure before taking his saddlebags downstairs.

Believe it or not, ma'am, we are simply trying to protect this town and its residents from an evil that has certainly surfaced. You just watched one of them take her own life rather than have such evil plans unwind. Believe your own eyes if you have no faith in our methods.
DM Kalizar
D'witt finds nothing unusual in the gear/bedding that Meridosen was using. He finds her brush and toiletries, her meager wardrobe, a small box locked box, the key hidden in the pillow, containing 3 small gems, 2 platinum, 7 gold, 8 silver, and 4 copper pieces, and a few cheap items of jewelry.
Sir Gareth, with Conner aiding him, indicated he was taking the time to thoroughly search the entire room, so spends forty minutes searching, with Rutcher standing nearby. The pair find similar personal items amongst the areas claimed by Ilsa and Sharla. However, Sir Gareth also finds a hidden panel by the headboard of the unused bunk over Meridosen's bed. The panel opens into a long open section between two joists, containing a normal looking rapier wrapped in oilcloth, a suit of strange grey studded leather armor with matching boots and gloves, and a normal leather backpack. The studs of the armor are shaped like metal stars, while the texture of the armor is smoother and more rubbery than normal leather. The backpack contains a coil of rope, a folding grappling hook, a small pouch holding a set of thieves picks, a half empty vial of an oily substance, a vial of antitoxin, a vial marked with the symbol of Gyronna, a belt pouch containing 25 platinum pieces and another black and gray feather ring, a small package wrapped in ribbon holding a stack of seedy love letters from Chatrilon to Meridosen, a traveller's outfit in dark colors, and two simple maiden outfits, each with a wig, one blonde, the other red.
The armor, the Gyronna vial, and the feather ring radiate magic, rolls required please.
The oily vial detects as poisonous, roll required please.
The letters do not detect as magic, but would take time to read over thoroughly, an Int check to skim for the highlights, taking about 15 minutes, roll required if done please.
Nothing detects has having an alignment, no roll required.
DM Kalizar
Which room(s) will be searched next and by whom? Rolls required please.
Also, let me know what is kept and what is left. Anything kept, let me know who has it and where they stow it.
I take it Angel and Xavorin remain below, watching over the Gundigoots and their staff, waiting for the others unless informed otherwise.
Sir Gareth d’Orionus
Sir Gareth asks D'witt to take Meridosen's expected valuables to the Gundigroot's for compensation:
a small box locked box, the key hidden in the pillow, containing 3 small gems, 2 platinum, 7 gold, 8 silver, and 4 copper pieces, and a few cheap items of jewelry.
Sir Gareth takes the other stuff downstairs after concentrating on the poison for two minutes and magic 'using his brooch.' "Angel, I know you are anxious to assault the mill, but I think this stuff has been worth the wait. Evidently Meridosen was an agent of Gyronna. We'll take these items into custody at the tower for further examination."
"We should search Carlson's room at least. Since Mrs. Gundigroot has already stated that I depart, I suggest we search everywhere even their locked room, too. Even if the Gundigroot's are innocent, their innocence would normally protect something nefarious being hidden in there," d'Orionus says that last bit to Rutcher.

The armor detects as faint abjuration. The leather material is not one you recognize.
The ring detects as strong conjuration, as did the previous ring.
As to Gyronna... She is not a popular deity as many fear her and her clergy, which is entirely female. These are usually the throwaways of society: disfigured prostitutes, wives caught in adultery, pregnant teenagers disowned by their parents, and so forth. Priestesses are renowned for their ability to foster hatred and turn friend against friend. The priesthood itself has no canon or book of scripture, or temples; instead, they favor small shrines of simple piled stones.
As I stated previously, you cannot take 20 on an ability check. However, D'witt is able to identify the poison, as it is the same one used against the caravan, the substance dumped into the evening meal the night Delts was kidnapped.
As to your searches, Rutcher will allow you to search your own room(s) and that of the accused, Carlson Haddix, but refuses to allow anyone to search the Gundigoots' chambers. No evidence has been found or given that indicates they have been involved in any wrong-doing. They are valued and respected members of this community. They have fought and bled for Hommlet, Sir Romidar and the Magister trust them with their lives, the village elders hold them in the highest esteem. Present evidence they have committed offense, otherwise leave their belongings unmolested.

I will look closely at the armor before and while heading to the Tower with Sir Gareth when he is ready.

The clouds overhead seem to collect, hiding the moon and the stars. The wind is picking up, and moisture is felt faintly on the breeze. You feel your connection to the goddess waning in your anger.

Xavorin nods and takes the stack of letters to a table and starts skimming through them for signs or codes that may be written in them.
1d20+2
Xavorin steps outside into the light of the porch, uncomfortable alone with the members of the Gundigoot group. Did Sir Gareth have to keep mispronouncing their name too?
He scans over the letters, realizing they start off simple enough about nine months ago. Meridosen and Chatrilon were sent to spy on the village, and report back information to their superiors about the leadership of Hommlet. She reported to a priestess of Gyronna that had come to realize that not the hag, but another mother, was the true face of her worship, a mother of all beasts great and small. He served the Gray Master, kidnapping and killing in honor of his dark god, who has an alliance with this "new trinity". That they would one day release the "god of all gods" was something they became to believe, even as they fell in love.
Much of the remaining content is dedications of love, discussions of kidnappings, murders, and deliveries of information to various coded locations. However, the last few letters deal with their discovery that Meridosen was pregnant, and their happy plans to sacrifice their child, upon it's birth, to this "new trinity" that it's joyfully damned soul might further weaken the prison that holds the "Dark Father, the First Destroyer."
He mentions some of this to Angel as he reads, feeling the winds picking up, sprinklets of rain starting to fall, as a bright purple light shoots upwards into the night, bursting high above the clouds, from the direction of the millhouse.
Suddenly the ground starts to shake, the clouds begin to swirl, and a stroke of reddish purple lightning strikes the great poplar tree in the heart of Erastil's grove.

After an agent of Gyronna served on their staff in secret and committed suicide rather than be captured, you can take responsibility for anything dangerous in there, then." Sir Gareth calmly replies.
Sir Gareth I assume takes 20 again searching Carlson's room. He finds no secret compartments, hidden panels, or lost possessions. The room is only slightly more furnished than the girls' room, having the bed, a clothes trunk, the washstand, basin and pitcher, a chamber pot, and a small writing desk mounted to the wall with a stool nearby. Carved into the surface of the desk, in a corner, is a small set of well worn initials, DR in elvish script. Nothing else of import is discovered.
As he and Conner turn to leave, the toad begins to franticly kick and jump with in his backpack, croaking RBBBBTT RBBBBTT RBBBBTT rbbbbtt the croaks becoming wetter and weaker with each gasp.
The ground begins to shudder, the building begins to shake, a gust of wind blowing the shudders free, shattering the window's glass.
Sir Gareth suddenly feels his connection to the goddess weaken, in fact loosing all connection completely as he hears the crack of lightning outside, reddish purple light flashing through the window.
DM Kalizar
All fury and torment seems loosed upon the village of Hommlet. The winds howl and scream in violent chorus, reminding some of a dream only a few nights old. Shutters are loosed, windows shattered, doors and siding cast to the night in winds freed from the hells of damnation, hot wet and stifling.
The grove is illuminated in a purplish glow, the tree limned in flickering light. What was once a thing of beauty blackens and wastes, manyu limbs cracking and tearing free. Then suddenly, the limbs began to change, moving against the wind, and the laws of nature themselves. An unearthly roar akin to the cracking and creaking of felling trees comes from the great tree as it starts to lift itself from the ground, unrooting and swinging side to side, smashing the grove to kindling and gravel. Screams of pain and terror are faintly heard over the whipping sulphurous winds.
Angel Dawnstar
Startled by the happenings Angel grabs Xavorin and rushes back inside the Inn.. "Sir Gareth, Conner, D'Witt.. Something horrbile has happened.. The great tree in the grove has come alive with vileness! I believe your serach needs to be put on hold for now!.."

Carlson and Miss Amelia are just setting down to a meal of roasted chicken when the storm begins, even the stones of the tower feeling the coming event. Miss Amelia, sensing something amiss, runs from the room and up the tower stairs. Carlson follows close at hand, heedless of the danger he puts himself in.
As Amelia approaches each level, she waves her hand, a key on a bracelet flashing as she mutters a strange command. A few flights up, they come upon the rooftop, looking out over Hommlet. Carlson notices two ballistae and a strange metal tube contraption emplaced around the roof, but quickly forgets them as he sees the great poplar tree changing before his eyes. A brief image of Jaroo, a kinder, gentler Jaroo flashes into his mind, urging him to help, then is gone.
Amelia turns to him, Can I trust you to help? She sees the resolve in his eyes, Follow me. then turns to the stairs, racing down two at a time. The stairs seem to blur as they land in the foyer.
Racing across the room, Amelia goes to the weapons rack. She takes down the longbow, then reaches down into the stand to come back with a quiver and bandolier. I know your weapons are not available, perhaps these may be of use. They are on loan, to be returned when this attack is over. She taps him with her key, again repeating her stange command word. The door will open for you. Stop this travestiry, and return, you are still on parole. I must prepare the tower.
Since the group has your belongings and weapons, you only have any item you would have been wearing on your person when arrested. No weapons or gear from your pack/saddlebags. He sees the others fighting it at the grove and calls to the half elf who cast magic "We Cannot let it escape the grove! It could kill everyone!"
