Sarine attempts to dodge the shadow's claws, but it unable to escape from them in time, and she grunts as the talons jab past her armor.

"Time to finish this."

10/14 rounds of bloodrage remaining, 0/10 temporary hp remaining, flank, power attack & combat expertise
Attack: 1d20 + 13 + 2 + 2 - 2 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 13 + 2 + 2 - 2 - 2 = 18
Damage: 2d6 + 9 + 2 + 6 ⇒ (6, 5) + 9 + 2 + 6 = 28

Sarine's armor class for this turn is 24 with combat expertise.

Sarine cuts the creature apart with another brutal blow!

BOOM!: 5d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 6, 3, 5) = 22 Aurelian, Jenner, Sarin. DC18 ref to halve.

Before nearly having her face blown off by its death blast!

With the undead finally defeated there is a chance to pause and explore the cavern properly. The main points of interest are the doors in the north wall and the crack leading into a empty cavern to the east. The doors appear to be locked but they each have a slot in them, about the right size for an Ioun Stone. The tourmaline sort.ioun stone you found at the archaeology site fits one door, but the other seems to require a spindle ioun stone of some sort. The only valuable of any sort in this room is the dull grey ioun stone that can be pried from another door.

The door is locked until you have the right Ioun Stones. Vriskirsa had an ioun stone that might work... ;)

Aurelian lets out a cry as he's too slow to get out of the way of the blast down to 18 out of 47 hp, his skin blistering from the intense heat.

"No, no, it is nothing," he says.

Let's heal, and then try the stone our lovely GM was kind enough to suggest.

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

Reflex Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16

Sarine staggers backwards under the force of the explosion before collapsing, weary as the rush of battle leaves her.

"I hate undead."

Sarine has 2/49 hp left. She was doing so well until that last round....

Our original plans for this excursion called for us to tackled the red-tainted forest on the return trip if we're still feeling up to that. Perhaps especially if it's on a different day. Explosions used up a lot of today's resources.

While the others receive healing, Tettia can't resist attempting to retrieve the gray ioun stone.

Looking again at the closed doors, she squints a little as she examines it closely. "Didn't that naga, Vriskirsa, have a stone like this?" she asks. "Does that mean we need to go back to her cave and bargain again?"

The Ioun Stone, Tettia ascertains easily enough, is burned out and holds no magic. Dull Grey Ioun Stone.

"Damnation!" Jenner yelps again as he catches enough fire to again sear past his protections. He hurriedly puts his beard out before it can smolder too badly.

"....gnhhh. This wasn't the best of days, my friends..."

Align Weapon becomes cure mod on Sarine: 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (5, 2) + 5 = 12

Is this the same day as the fight with the Chuul? If so, I'm now out of spells. If we had a day's rest (the thread just says a 'long journey', but not sure), then I have an ironskin that can become a cure mod on Aurelian, but it's my last spell; I wiped out an awful lot of spells healing us after the rockfall/cataclysm thing.

Potential cure mod on Aurelian???: 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (6, 1) + 5 = 12

I took 20 damage that fight even with my resist fire up, so I'm now at 12/44. We may need to rest before we go any further, for sure.

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

"Thank you Jenner."

I'm a little fuzzy on the timing of things too. Is it in the morning on the current day? We can likely rest wherever we want. We haven't been on much of a clock. Those big explosions really overtaxed our friendly divine casters.

"Is this...Azlanti construction?" Sarine wonders as she recovers from the battle. "It looks very different from what we've seen elsewhere."

Do we know anything about whether killing the shadows put the haunt up above to rest? Or can we investigate that further? I'm not very interested in resting here if the place remains haunted.

Ashlyn heals Sarine, who's in far worse shape than Aurelian, then uses a second spell on the dashing swordsman.

Cure Mod for Sarine: 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (8, 7) + 5 = 20
Cure Mod for Aurelian: 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (2, 4) + 5 = 11 Aurelian is at 41 hp

"If those doors do not open, we should keep them closed," the swordsman says. "You all look very hurt, and we should rest before we go on. Aurelian Fache can only be in so many places at once."

I think we rest here, since we're out of magic. We don't really know about the haunt; Ashlyn's archetype takes out her detect undead ability.

Tettia's good on HP and magic. However, if everyone else would like to rest, there's no way (barring a pristine library) she's going to argue to push forward.

As the group settles in to rest, the young woman takes a seat not too far from Aurelian.

"So ... do you think ... that's what they saw?" she asks the handsome man as she looks up at the darkening sky. "I mean right before ..." she shrugs, "You know." She continues to look up at the first stars. "I can't imagine what that must have felt like. Looking up and knowing that you and everyone you knew were going to die and unable to do anything about it."

The girl reaches up and wipes her eyes and her nose as she tries to conceal of sniffle. "All those people. People that hadn't done anything wrong - that were just going about their day. Buying bread. Doing their laundry. Children playing." She remains quiet for a bit. "It's almost overwhelming."

Well, since Ashlyn offered.... Thanks Ashlyn!

Jenner makes a nose-scrunched look when Ashlyn points out he's still fairly hurt himself. "Aye, well, that is to say-- yes."

3 CLW on Jenner: 3d8 + 9 ⇒ (6, 8, 8) + 9 = 31 takes me to 43/44. Can live with that

"Ha, yes, well, Abadar can only be in so many places at once as well, patching your hide up," Jenner says with a crooked grin at the swordsman. "--ah, thank you Ashlyn, that's a sight better.

"I agree, we ought make a camp, keep our eyes out for trouble."

Jenner busies himself laying out something like an organized camp despite the less than ideal circumstances, and listens with some amusement to Tettia's inquiries of Aurelian. For himself, once the camp is sorted, he undoes the braids in his beard, untying the various little favors and the wooden key, and carefully combs out both his beard and hair with scrupulous thoroughness, then takes the time to rebraid each bit again, in the same pattern it had previously settled into.

"I'll have a lot to add in this batch of letters to the family," he says, to nobody in particular. "Watery beasts, the unquiet dead... visions of Earthfall itself."

"No, there is always something to do," Aurelian gently contradicts Tettia. "Maybe it will not work, but you should always fight back. Look at how much on this island survived. Those people are all gone now because they are very old, but we do not know if some survived. No, we do now. Some must have survived, because we are still here."

"Even if you die, it is better to die doing something," he says somberly. "Maybe you fail, but maybe you save one of those children. Aurelian Fache's family lives in Steyr, where we went after fleeing Galt. We saw death coming for us -- the Grey Gardeners kill everything -- but instead of just accepting it, Aurelian Fache's father gave his life so that he and his sisters could escape. That is why Aurelian Fache learned to use his blade, so that he would always be able to fight if he had to. Horrible things happen, yes, but it is more horrible to just stand there and do nothing!"

Tettia listens to Aurelian as she continues to look up at the stars. When he begins speaking about Galt, her eyes drop down to look at his. "I'm so sorry about your father," she says. She looks down at her feet. "I've never had anyone close to me die. My mother's mother, Grandmother Neadle, died last year. But I'd only met her once so that's not really ..." She goes quiet for a moment. "I don't even want to think how I'd feel if Father died."

She reaches up and brushes her eyes. "Sorry, I'm just being stupid and emotional." Without another word, she turns over on her bedroll.

Faint sniffling sounds escape for most of the evening.

"Oh, Aurelian Fache was not close to his father; he died before Aurelian was born," the swordsman says with a shrug. "But he is glad you too have never known much death. It is difficult, and that is why we learn to fight; to protect those things that we need to protect. Plus, if things don't die, they cannot come back like Ashlyn's loud ... friend."

He shrugs again as she rolls over and stretches, ready to keep watch a bit longer before Sarine takes over her shift.

"You're welcome, Jenner!" Ashlyn remarks as she settles in to sleep. "Good night, everyone."

Ashlyn yawns loudly, and turns in for the night. As she sleeps she mutters and mumbles, as if having a conversation.

The night is peaceful for the most part, if not comfortable, although you all dream of Earthfall, falling meteors and roiling clouds of black smoke. Luckily for Tettia Aurelian Fache comes striding through her dreams to save her like the hero from the romance novels she'd never admit to reading.

The next morning reveals a gray sky, but the groups dilemma is fundamentally unchanged.

"Now, do we feel much better?" Aurelian says, doing his morning stretches -- though fully clothed in deference to Lady Tettia and his other companions, as well as the lack of sun and beach.

"You should bring your man inside you out," he adds to Ashlyn, "and then we can open these doors and find out more. But be ready for more undead. Aurelian Fache's sword sometimes does not work well against them, especially if they have no skin for him to cut."

Any preps we want to take before opening one of the doors?

I don't know what you're talking about. ;P

"We still need another stone," Tettia posits after breakfast. "So shall we go see the naga and bargain with her for it?"

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

I checked the map, and I'm assuming that we're somewhat close to red B still. I don't know where the Eartfall haunt site is in relation to that. Does Jenner want to prep a Detect Undead for today?

"Vriskirsa lives closeby, just down the coastline," Sarine offers. "That would be a quick expedition, and we can still investigate that red-tinged wood on our way back to Talmandor's Bounty after that."

After Elizar peeks inside I'm in agreement. Let's go see Vriskkirsa, then the bloody wood.

Will do more tomorrow when I can get the books.

"Auw, there there." Ashlyn attempts to pat him on the back, but her hand slips right through. It only seems to make Elizar wail louder.

Exiting the crater seems to be free of repercussions and the group makes headway back across the island to Vriskirsa's grotto. The water naga is there when you arrive although many of her treasures are not and she nods at your request.

"I am willing to trade with my good friendsss. If you have new relicssss then I would love to ssssee them."

She has a clear spindle Ioun stone (which you need for the door), a pearl dolphin figurine of wonderous power and a couple of new items she seems to have found, an elaborately carved wand of dark wood (Waterbreathing, 46 charges, CL5) and a pair of gloves with a strange enchantment which Tettia determines to be Form-Fixing Gauntlets.

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

I'm not seeing much that Sarine has that's very tradeable. Unless I missed recording something, her only magic items are the relic greatsword, the composite longbow, an ioun torch and a potion of cure light wounds.

"Yes, Aurelian Fache and his friends have found many things," the swordsman says. "One of them is a door that opens with that stone you have. Can we use it for a time? You are welcome to come with us to see what we can find. There is a gauntlet that makes the dead man in fair Ashlyn more upset than usual."

Tettia looks with longer over the items the naga has for trade, but doesn't speak up as she doesn't believe she has anything the creature would want.

Yeah, the wand of water breathing would be really nice. Yes, Tettia has the ring of swimming.

"Yes, we have this lovely statue, and a copper sheet. Would you trade to us for these things?" Aurelian asks as Sarine looks through their accumulated discoveries.

Vriskirsa examines the items closely, requesting Sarine to turn them back and forth in numerous different ways until she has examined them thoroughly from every angle.

"Thessse are lovely. True relicssss of Asssslant. You may take an item for your ownssss. If you wantssss the ssstone then you can take it, bring it back and exssschange it for another one. Leave me the ssstatue and we can complete the tradessss when you return."

With the bargain made you leave with the Ioun Stone and head back to the ruined Azlanti site. Unfortunately the haunt is still active, but sending a single person in first seems to do the trick.

Earthfall: 8d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 1, 1, 6, 1, 4, 5) = 25 One person can volunteer to take the damage, DC19 ref to halve.

With the two Ioun Stones in place the door opens slowly, revealing a final blast shadow, shrouded in smoke and ash.

You have plenty of time to buff as you please. Given that I'm calling the fight :)

Searching the revealed hub you find a long collapsed vault. A musty odor wafts from the stagnant pools and much of what was contained here lies in twisted heaps of corroded metal and smashed crystal. Within the debries, guided by Elizar's previous view, locates an ioun stone no-one has ever seen before and a metallic gauntlet with a place in the back of the fist for an ioun stone.

Spellcraft, DC22. Ioun Stone:
This is a Mossy Disk Ioun Stone. It grants a +5 competence bonus on Knowledge History.

Spellcraft, DC15. Gauntlet:
This gauntlet acts like a wayfinder, granting abilites based on the Ioun Stone inserted into it.It can casts detect magic once per day, with a light effect tied into the cone. (You get a 60ft light cone as well as the DM effect).

You can only get the effect from one gauntlet at a time, even if you wear two.

Returning to Vriskirsa is straight forward, if somewhat repetative and the water naga happily completes the trade.

Choose your item then what next?

I think the wand of water breathing would best benefit us.

Spellcraft DC 22: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32

Spellcraft DC 15: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23

Looking over the ioun stone, Tettia's eyes go wide. "Oh, wow," she exclaims. "I've read about these. This particular one is keyed to the subject of history. When you're trying to remember something, they dig into the little corners of your mind and bring out all the little details that you've forgotten." She holds it up to the light as if looking through it. "I've always wanted to try one of these."

Tetti would really like to have that stone. :) :)

She then begins a clinical report on the gauntlet's capabilities as if presenting to a committee.

The gauntlet would be fun, but it doesn't really fit my image of her.

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

Some of the other items are good in their niche applications, but the wand does seem to have obvious usefulness given what we're expecting. Even if we come up with our own water breathing solutions, we'll have times when those aren't up. The wand would be a big help if we ever start getting dispelled while in the deeps.

"It's too bad that we weren't able to put the spirits in that area to rest," she muses as they out of the Azlanti ruins.

"Thank you, Vriskirsa," Sarine says. "I'm glad that we've been able to make a trade that is good for both of us."

After the party departs, Sarine will advocate for journeying toward the red forest again.

Sarine could make use of the gauntlet, but so could anyone in the party. Has anyone not gotten anything in a while?

The gauntlet feels more appropriate for Sarine or Jenner, so I'm fine with either taking it.

Prepared this time, Aurelian is able to avoid the worst of the echoed earthfall, though he's still appreciative when Ashlyn heals him, flashing her a grin.

Inside, he nods at Tettia.

"Yes, you can take it," he says generously. "It will look good circling you, and Aurelian wishes more action stones for his sword."

He nods at Sarine's suggestion, happy to clear the island of carnivorous plants, though he somewhat suspects this might be one of those rare situations where the swordswoman's blade and method might be more effective than his own.

The young girl's face lights up with excitement. "May I?" she responds, almost hopping up and down. She examines the stone for another moment before releasing it in front of her face. It begins spinning about her head and she can't seem to resist the urge to try to watch it as it circles.

It only takes about three orbits before Tettia stumbles into Aurelian as dizziness threatens to overtake her.

"Wow," she mutters as she tries to regain her footing. "No one mentions that in any of the journals. I'll have to write a paper about it."

The red trees sound fine. Well ... not 'fine' - quite threatening, actually, but ... Off to the red trees.

"That's a fine gauntlet there, care to wager a friendly game on it?" Jenner grins at Sarine.

OOCly I'm fine with either myself or Sarine taking it. Sorry I've been so quiet, incredibly busy + a sick cat. :( Sorry for short post but just wanted to confirm I'm still here, alive, and ready to go for the red tree area

Ashlyn claps her hands, happy for her friends and their snazzy new treasure. "Oh! What game are you going to play?" she asks Jenner and Sarine. "I want to watch!"

Along their various walks and travels, Ashlyn looks for some tasty berries that would be appropriate for her goodberry spell.

Survival (find berries!): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 How many berries do I find?

We had time to rest, yes? Just confirming before I adjust my spell slots.

I'm assuming so; I just handwaved the healing, but we'd have had to go back afterward to Vriskirsa's place, and then off to the crimson forest.

Since Sarine seems amenable, Jenner grins and pulls out a handful of bone dice, well-worn from years of being rolled around on the decks of ships. "Ship, Cap'n, Crew? 's an old classic. It might have land-names as well, but I learned it sailin'."

He beckons Ashlyn closer to watch, and Sarine as well so he can demonstrate.

"Each player get three rolls of the bones. Your goal's to get a six-- that's the ship-- a five-- the skipper-- and a four, the crew. Anything you have left is the cargo, and breaks the tie if all players manage to get ship, cap'n, an' crew. The trick is you've got to take them in order, so, here's a samplin':"

Jenner rolls the five dice into the dirt to demonstrate.

5d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 3, 5, 6) = 20

"Ah, see, there's m'ship," he says, nudging the die that's facing the six pips upward with one stubby finger. "And I rolled the five and the four on the first cast-- that's about as good a roll as I could hope for. A pity it's my damn demonstration, ha! Now if I hadn't managed the six on the first go, I couldn't take neither the five nor the four-- you can't take the lower values if you hen't got the higher yet.

"Anyhow, this was a very good cast-- I filled all three of the neces'ries on my first, so I can set them aside." Jenner plucks the 6, 5, and 4 from the pot, and puts them to the side. "That leaves me with the 2 and the 3, for a cargo of 5. I do have two casts left, so I could try an' get a higher cargo, so I will."

Plucking the two remaining dice, he shakes them in hand, and tosses them into the soil.

2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5

"Ah, well, there's something to be said for consistency, hen't there? I'll try my third cast to pick up better cargo."

2d6 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6

"Well! Some change 's better than none. So, that's a successful hand of ship-cap-crew, and a cargo of 6-- a pretty good showing. But alas, that's what it was, just a showing," the dwarf says with a rueful grin. "If you don't get the ship, cap, and crew, you lose regardless. Now then. For our actual stakes of that fine gauntlet...."

Jenner picks up all five of the dice and breathes on them for luck, and lets them roll...

5d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 2, 1, 5) = 15

"See! That's a sight worse. I didn't get a ship this time, so I can't go hiring on that skipper or that crew yet. Now my luck's back to usual form. Second cast:"

5d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 3, 3, 6) = 15

"Ah! A ship at least. But now I've got to get lucky and get both skipper and crew in my last cast." Setting aside the six, Jenner rolls the remaining dice.

4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 5, 6) = 21

"....I'll be damned," Jenner says with a blink. "Ah, well, there's my captain... my crew... and... ah.... double sixes for cargo."

He grins, somewhat sheepishly, at Sarine, and hands over the dice. "....well... you might match me?"

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

"It does look like you have me beat, Jenner. All that means is I have nothing left to lose," Sarine says as she picks up the dice.

5d6: 5d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 1, 4, 6) = 17

Sarine laughs when she sees the results of the bones. "If you hadn't done so well already I'd think I was way ahead with that toss. As it stands, I've got an outside chance with it."

Ship, Captain & Crew, 2d6: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 4) = 8

"Hard to say if I wouldn't have kept that roll. As things stand, I have to go for it all."

Ship, Captain & Crew, 2d6: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8

"I guess eight cargo is all my ship can carry. The gauntlet is yours after a fight well won."

Tettia watches the game with excitement, clapping her hands when Jenner wins.

"I do so love parlor games like this," she says with a smile. "My sister Toddy and I would play dominoes for hours." She rolls her eyes. "Unless Mother caught us, of course." Her voice takes on a very prim and proper tone. "Ladies never descend to a child's activity." She smiles again. "I can't wait to show Toddy how to play this one."
