As Kakao looks through the undergrowth, he thinks Ugly thing, whatever it is. Is that a crab's shell on it? He scratches his head in puzzlement.
Looking around, Kakao quickly finds a good place and ties off Plyto's reins on a nearby tree. He then readies his club -- it is about normal size but he seems to need two hands to wield it. Looking towards Cyanne and Gillig, he points towards the shape and then makes a bashing motion with the club.
He seems ready to follow if either of the others want to advance on the creature.

Cyanne doesn't see the carapace creature until Kakao points it out, but perhaps she has some idea what it is?
She readies her spear and nods.

Apologies for the delay people.
Caramir takes a step back from the creature, and fires a shot at it, as his mind races to understand what they are up against.

Hey trux, if you can find an icon wielding a staff, please exchange me. I do look out of place on the map.
(Next round after casting shield)
Karl steps up to the beastie to attack
As he moves in he pushes a piece of his power into the end of the staff he strikes with, and then attacks.

Caramir's arrow goes wide of its target.
However, Caramir positively identifies the magical beast, Whatever you decide to share each turn should fit within reason. (able to speak it quickly within 5 seconds.)
If a medium creature nears this collective, there is a danger it could be engulfed by the host.
Unarmed or natural melee attacks against this monster will cause the attacker to suffer the effects of its poison.
It also has an attack where it can fling members of its host out to attack enemies, however this is limited to close proximity (10ft).
Victims of any attack suffer a poisonous bite.
Round 2 Mikka next

Mikka steps up and lets loose her bowstring, but at the last moment, Morti moves into the line of fire. The arrow flies upwards as Mikka pulls the shot. It disappears somewhere overhead. Unfortunately, Mikka suffers a -4 to her attack while firing into melee. Otherwise, you would have hit the eight legged freaks.
Hey group, I'm going to give you a chance to hear from Caramir before the NPCs & badguy act. He has vital info thanks to his awesome brainworks. Caramir, feel free to PM me if you have any questions. You have can share about 15 seconds worth of knowledge with us, as you like.

Apologies for the hold up guys - whole day in training as one of my teeth tries to pain me to death...
"It is a spider collective" - Caramir remembers - "As a group they are only damaged by bludgeoning attacks, and mind affecting spells" - he warns his companions - "And it engulfs those that get too close" - the elf adds, taking a step back, perfectly aware that he is almost powerless against such creature.
Never one to give up, he starts looking for a branch that he can use as a weapon.

The cleric and the bard cast away their crossbows.
First, Makirut moves closer and intones a familiar incantation. Grease appears on the ground around the spider. However, it manages to keep all of its legs anchored and stable.
grease DC 12: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 Going to say only the spider's square and the square behind it are affected with grease. Will mark on map.
Montepierre rushes forward and plunges his spear into the heart of the creature. A high chittering noise cries out, and the hole Lerroux leaves in the swarm shows he hit his mark.

The swarm lunges with a hundred fangs to bite Morti, but it stands no chance of making it past the dwarf's shield. The chittering continues as a whining noise from the beast.

Your perception rolls do allow you to take a better look at Gillig. He is armed with a bow and some homemade arrows. He has a waterskin and a small hunting knife. He also looks more than a little discouraged.
Your huntsman motions to you that he plans to go around. His head is tilted to the side as if in question.
Normally it will attack and eat anything that nears its lair. However, this one has likely left its lair to be behaving in such a manner. -Probably showing similar signs of aggression to the other animals you’ve noticed.
The thing’s many eyes sit atop lightly furred antennae. These allow it to sense vibrations and sniff the air as a snake uses its tongue. You can probably safely whisper to one another without being heard, but there is always the off chance it could notice you.
Bulk of the partay partay is up next.
Cyanne Miller
Does Cyanne know if this creature has a mind? Or is it mindless, like most vermin? This would affect her actions going forward.
Kakao Mit Schlag
Seeing that both Cyanne and Gillig want to avoid the creature, Kakao looks back and forth between the creature and his mule.
He cocks his head to the side, evidently thinking. I hope that creature continues to make lots of noise, because Plyto is even less stealthy than I. Guess worst case, we have to fight anyways. Might as well at least try it their way.
Shrugging, Kakao nods in agreement. He unties Plyto's reins and takes them in one hand, putting his club over his shoulder and carrying it one handed. He then follows the others, trying to give the creature a wide berth.
Kakao is careful to keep himself between the mule and the creature.
Handle Animal: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 I have no idea what sort of stealth the mule has, but that is enough to push for a trick an animal doesn't know. Got lucky there.
Stealth: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
There is some jingling of gear, but the mule does stay calm and in control as he follows the others.
Okrin Goodspeed
Considering his options with Caramir's good word, Okrin fortifies himself for the fight ahead.
Okrin casts mage armor on himself. AC increases to 19 for 1 hour.
Cyanne Miller
Given that the group's stealth is only going to be as good as it's noisiest member, Cyanne takes ten on stealth roll to match Keiko. She will stay between Keiko and the monster if she can.

Ok Karl, I'll count that as your Round 3 attack. Karl's round 2 attack and morti's round 2 attack both go wide.
Karl's quarterstaff and Morti's hammer bith miss the spidermind as is skitters side to side.

Spiders in the wood? EEEK!! :D
trux, that wooden improvised weapon wouldn't by any chhance have reach, would it? ;)
"It will take damage from other weapons besides bludgeoning ones" - the elf adds - "It is simply , and particularly resistant to such attacks"
Happy with the improv weapon found, he prepares to move toward the creature -"Do not hit it with foot or fist - you will risk poisoning" - he warns.
Okrin Goodspeed
With this additional piece of insight from Caramir, Okrin readies his quarterstaff.
Attack roll for future reference when Okrin is up. Likely not to be able to check in until late tomorrow.
Quarterstaff: 1d20 ⇒ 1 And he drops his weapon...
Caramir
Meh, I don't really feel like going into close combat with that one, which brings me to another subject. I don't think we actually ever discussed whatever spells Caramir would have started with, did we? :D

Ok, I won't kick and sputter because of not having the usual 4+Int bonus (at least not too much) ;) Gonna add an item to my 'to-do' list - capturing a wizard, and steal his spells. Check!

Chk chk chkrak kick chrk
Everyone watches on as before their eyes the swarm appears to consume Karl. Mikka and the others can all glimpse patches of skin here and there within the monster as the mage struggles inside. Truly, a horrible sight none of you will likely forget any time soon.
Karl and other party memebers are up! Karl, if I remember correctly, you rolled to attack for round 3, I will allow you to change your actions at this point if you want to resist the grapple and try to escape. Spells will not provoke traditional aoos from within the spidermind. However you may be injected with more poison. Concentration checks will need to factor in any damage you are already exposed to.
Characters outside the collective need not fear harming Karl this round.
Should he survive, Karl will certainly have the future opportunity to gather bonus xp through spider-related roleplaying.

wait I'm grappled? When did that happen?
yep, 'fraid so. CMD was 16 though, and you beat it! Even accounting for the strength damage!
Morti's mighty hammer swing connects with the creature, sending spiders flying in a burst of black and brown. From the hole spills forth a magus as Karl pops free and practically flies away from the creature.
But the spider takes one last swing at him before Karl can get clear. attack! AOO: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14!!!
It misses! The spidermind misses Karl! *Cheering* Just as he zooms away, Caramir's arrow goes wide and Okrin's quarterstaff attack misses. The swarm quickly recovers, trying to reform itself from its component parts. However, to the more perceptive among you it is clear that the thing is now looking mostly hollow at its core.
Karl, you appear in Montepierre's square and you move away as you like.
Okrin, you certainly can attack with your quarterstaff this round! I have marked in green the square where I assumed you moved to. Just move your token into range wherever you prefer. You have my ApOlOgIeS for not moving the spider earlier on. It effectively 5ft stepped into K's square.
Assuming everything is good with movement, ... ROUND 4 Mikka to play
