THE FALL OF FAIRHAVEN
The first community that you will pass along your journey through the Bloodsworn Vale is the idyllic mining community of Fairhaven. Though forged out of conflict, Fairhaven has known peace for several generations, but not without a cost. Goramial, an ancient red dragon laired nearby, appears content to let the settlement remain unmolested in exchange for a monthly tribute in the form of art produced from the mine’s gems and metals. Over the course of many years, Fairhaven has become a refuge for the artistically inclined. Your map and planning have you reaching the town after seven days of travel on the rugged, snow-melted Peak Path.
<< Peak Path Woods | an hour after dawn | blue skies, cool temperatures, and light winds | Day 1 >>
The rays of the sun crested the mountains to the east an hour ago opening your fourth day on the Peak Path while the valley below is still cast in shadow. The advice of the greybeards proved accurate. The high mountain pass has been wet and muddy but passable on foot. It would be another couple of weeks before merchants can bring horses and their wagons. Yesterday was probably the worst of it passing through the wind-shaved treeless zone, such that last night you could camp in a wide place of the rocky path through a sparse forest of fifteen foot trees.
As you pack after breakfast, a thunderous crack precedes the trees suddenly bursting toward you, their foliage exploding into the air leaving bits of splintered wood, leaves, and other plant matter to settle to the rocky, forest floor and scattering the remnants of your fire in a small puff of sparks and ash.
Make a flat-footed DC 13 Reflex save to completely avoid 3d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 6) = 12 damage from two of the impacted trees crashing into your campsite.
As you recover your wits, you see a haggard looking griffon, which is clearly injured from its plummet, rolling to its feet. It pauses for a moment looking at you, its great chest heaving as it tries to reclaim its breath. A poorly hafted arrow held together with twine and fletched with chicken feathers protrudes from its awkward left wing. An elaborate saddle of exquisite craftsmanship is buckled to the beast’s back, but no rider can be seen.
<< Encounter: It Came From Above | Surprise Round | Environment: Rocky & Steep Grade (difficult terrain) | Encounter Map: Crashing Landing >>
Everywhere is difficult terrain due to the rocks and steep grade of the mountain (double movement and no 5-ft steps). Please confirm your icons to start within the 5x5 square that is centered on the red sunburst, which is the remnants of your fire. Light green squares are sparse forest giving partial cover (+2 AC & +1 Reflex); the first save already included the bonus in the DC. Dark green squares are the wreckage of the griffon’s fall giving you the choice to take any level of cover from a designated threat: partial, full cover (+4 AC & +2 Reflex), and total cover. White squares are otherwise normal.

He lifts his gaze and sees a griffon there. It is probably enraged for the fall, but it's clearly not a wild one, and also is hurt, so the hunter concludes he may not attack them. "Light, Down." As the wolf keeps a low profile, Esaul takes off his heavily loaded backpack and, without drawing any weapons, stands and speaks to the creature, in an measured tone. No cover for me. Standing with her back to the fire and keeping a casual eye on their surroundings, Tris is watching the slope... and not the sky. She's as startled as everyone else by the crash-landing griffon, but her instincts take over and she manages to dodge the explosion of wood fragments and hot coals.
"Black gods of the pit and all their stinking afterbirths!" she swears in startlement, wheeling around, hand flying instinctively to her rapier's hilt. She stares flabbergasted at the sight of a... a griffon in the wreckage of their meager camp.
"What in the name of all fiends...?" she mouths. Immediately her head snaps back and her eyes scan the morning sky. She doesn't know a hell of a lot about griffons, but if it came from the sky, there might be more of them. Her fingers creep towards the straps of her pack, where her bow is stowed, but she doesn't draw it just yet. If the bird-brain is smart enough to associate arrows with bows, she's not sure she wants to draw that weapon while she's so close to the creature.

Sorry, brainfart, for some reason I was misreading as 5 squares out from the sunburst in all directions. IDK if it's the holidays killing m brain or what. G9, then.

Devan Steed |

Devan is caught completely off guard, having his back turned towards the crash site when the griffon impacts. A tree slams into his back and knocks him flat, breaking his nose on a rock. "What the f&@@!" he curses, struggling slowly back to his feet with blood streaming down over his mouth and chin. He turns woozily to see the wounded griffon right behind him. "Woah there! So Arend would save. I put Carter in F8 to start.
In actuality, while intelligent, griffons are far less concerned with such vague abstractions as honor, and are more akin to the base animals they resemble in terms of motivations. Their love of horsemeat and their territorial natures often put the creatures at odds with civilized races, though for the most part griffons keep to themselves. Those who do find themselves in contact with humanoids may decide to join ones whose goals coincide with their own, casting themselves as mounts for particularly compatible riders or as protectors of treasure for those who bribe them with gifts. New riders are often surprised at how reluctantly their mounts respond to both spoken and unspoken commands, and it quickly becomes apparent to the uninformed that griffons are no mere beasts, but rather highly protective predators with intricate systems for interacting with others. While unable to speak, griffons that grow up in the vicinity of humanoids quickly learn the local tongue, understanding even complex arguments and discussions, though the creatures themselves can only communicate via gestures, grunts, and cries. Griffons' intelligence becomes even more apparent in the heat of battle as they execute complex maneuvers and basic tactics in order to gain the advantage against their enemies. Similarly, griffons possess a keen awareness of the more discreet plots taking place around them, and remain a figure representative of both silent strength and powerful insight.
Many of you have actions left for Round 1. I'll wait for Carter to post before advancing.

SUMMARY OF ROUND 1
Elbows instinctively ducks and rolls when the griffin crashes down, coming up with his shield in his arm and otherwise empty handed. In a soft voice he says, "That's right. We won't hurt you."
Standing with her back to the fire and keeping a casual eye on their surroundings, Tris is watching the slope... and not the sky. She's as startled as everyone else by the crash-landing griffon, but her instincts take over and manage to dodge the explosion of wood fragments and hot coals. "Black gods of the pit and all their stinking afterbirths!" she swears in the suddenness, wheeling around, hand flying instinctively to her rapier's hilt. She stares flabbergasted at the sight of a... a griffon in the wreckage of their meager camp. "What in the name of all fiends...?" she mouths. Immediately her head snaps back and her eyes scan the morning sky and see nothing but blue skies above the wreckage of the crash landing.
Devan is caught completely off guard, having his back turned towards the crash site when the griffon impacts. A tree slams into his back and knocks him flat, breaking his nose on a rock. "What the f&!*!" he curses, struggling slowly back to his feet with blood streaming down over his mouth and chin. He turns woozily to see the wounded griffon right behind him. "Woah there! You need some help beautiful? We can get that arrow out for you..."
Arend, who was standing near Devan, completely evades the blow. He interposes himself between Devan and the griffon in a fighting stance, ready should it try to attack his master.
Both Esaul and his wolf companion Light see the trees falling and dodge the mess of branches and the dangerous trunk. They lift their gaze and see a griffon there. It is probably enraged for the fall, but it's clearly not a wild one, and also is hurt, so the hunter concludes he may not attack them. "Light, down." As the wolf keeps a low profile, Esaul takes off his heavily loaded backpack and, without drawing any weapons, stands and speaks to the creature, in a measured tone to aid the brawler’s soft voice. "We are not going to hurt you. I can heal you, if you let me approach you."
Esaul’s aid to Kel’s roll makes the DC 20 Diplomacy check to improve the griffon’s attitude to Indifferent. You can make requests of the creature with an additional Diplomacy check DC 15.
Carter sits next to his pack, attempting to scribble some notes in his journal but suffering from terrible writer's block. It always looks exactly the same when they pack up the camp! How many times can you describe the same camp? He barely avoids a massive branch that crashes down from above. He drops his pen, but saves his journal. "I ONLY HAVE TWO PENS NOW," he screams at the branch. He tips his head up from his lost writing implement and looks surprised to see the magnificent injured griffon. He keeps his eyes trained on the beast, and whispers a quick poem, just in case. A flash of silver appears from his clothing, then pops out of existence as quickly as it came.
The griffon keeps its right eye on Kel and Esaul and replies with a guarded whimper. You think that you’ve improved its attitude. It awkwardly tests its arrow-pinned wing and clearly determines that it cannot fly. Then it turns to face down the debris-strewn slope where it crashed and backs itself further up slope.
Due to its size, the griffon has zero cover in the wreckage and can not move into the sparse forest without squeezing.
"Blasted bleedin' mud an' trees. Shoulda staked're camp aneath a cavern aproper. Too bleedin' expo—ooooaaaaghhh!" Thondrir's belly aching is cut off by the impact of a slender tree trunk squarely across the stout dwarf's broad shoulders. The blow staggers him to a knee while his axe-swingin' arm clutches at the dirt beneath to stabilize his balance. A few seconds pass before he realizes there's something behind him, breathing heavily and substantially larger than the dwarf is.
Now you see what appears to be chasing the griffon emerge into the crash-cleared forest. Scrambling through the far wreckage of the griffon’s crash landing, three goblins trail two dire rats each wearing collars with chain leashes. The apparent leader screams ”O tu eku!”, and the three goblins drop the leashes. The six dire rats continue toward the griffon while the goblins take out their shortbows.
Each of the goblins and rats has full cover. The dire rats appear to be using their Climb 20-ft to move.

He grabs his crossbow out of his sack and moves back behind the fire before aiming at one of the rats. The rats are difficult to see amidst the underbrush as they skitter forward. Devan's face and back are throbbing with pain, and his eyes are watering. He fires the bolt, but it ricochets harmlessly off one of the fallen trees. "Arend, rat duty!" he barks. He clutches his nose with one hand while he lowers the now empty crossbow to his foot in preparation for reloading.

Devan Steed |

Keep in mind when posting that our actions don't occur in posting order. So Tris just commented on something that happens after she goes (^_^)

Tris |

Considering that I did nothing my first turn but look for other enemies, I'm fine with assuming Tris got bumped down in initiative, rather like a readied action would do, but you're correct that I didn't say so. Because, honestly, Tris's initial reaction in the first round would probably have been to send an arrow into the bird-thing that just landed in her camp, which would have seriously screwed with the diplomacy attempts that people were also initiating after her turn (but before I posted), so.....

Devan Steed |

Yeah, no worries. I'm not questioning your actions, just speech. It just creates this weird responding to future events thing in the summary post.

Carter H. Crosby |

Jubal Breakbottle |

I'll try to fix Tris's comments in the summary post. But the posting out of order is a lot like table chat that occurs in real life. Tris chose not to shoot the griffon, because someone said let's use diplomacy.
How does taking cover work exactly? Can I double move, then take full cover? Next round, do I need to get out of full cover to cast a spell?
In this situation, inside the dark green squares, you can choose what cover you are taking because there is so much. Full cover is like a battlement or arrow slit; you are mostly covered and still have line of effect/sight. If you take Total Cover that's effectively completely behind a wall, then you would need to move out of total cover to cast a spell. OK?

Devan leaves the crossbow propped against his kneee, and quickly draws two small glass vials, inserting the thinner one into the thicker. He gives the top a twist to lock them together, and then charges up the bomb with some of his magical energy. The vial begins to glow the same purple color as the rune on his forehead as he lobs it towards the rats. "Fire in the hole!" he cries. The bomb hits exactly where he wanted it to, splashing three of the rats with fire and shrapnel.

Tris flashed a quick grin at the griffon's nod, and scanned the mess of thick growth that yet separated her and the rats... and the tree-growth tangled goblins. Picking her way along the rocky slope, through Esaul's writhing vines, while the goblins tried to shoot her, wasn't her idea of a fun time... but if, perhaps, they had flight on their side... that'd be a hell of a lot better way to hunt down gobs. Especially if the goblins broke free and ran the other way.
Lowering her bow back to her side, Tris picked her way around the remains of their fire towards the griffon, and reached inside her pack to fish out a bottle.
"Here, girl! --or boy, whichever you are-- this'll ease that sting in your wing, and get you ready to shred goblins again in style!"
Move action to draw potion of CLW, move action to move as close to the griffon as she can. I think, given diagonals and the difficult terrain, she's going to be one square away from the griffon no matter how I count it, but I-7 is as good a square as any.

Thondrir Baradorn |

Thondrir watches the rats eagerly, ready to lunge into action should they choose to pursue the injured griffon.
Thondrir is going to delay his action for now, waiting to see what the rats do.

Carter H. Crosby |

Sorry guys, I guess I was wrong about how busy I'd be this week. Everything will slow down starting after New Years.
Carter rises up from behind the fallen tree trunk and points a finger at the rat engaged with Arend. With a quick SPLURT a dash of putrid yellowish liquid pops into existence a few feet away from the rat and shoots toward his eyes. After shooting his acid, Carter scoots a bit farther away from their enemies.
Acid Splash the M13 rat, then move to L9.

SUMMARY OF ROUND 3
Seeing the rats converge on Light, Kel curses under his breath, "Crap!" and then hustles toward the throng. He gets as close as he's able and then -- grinning broadly in anticipation -- gets ready to kick the first rat to make the mistake of coming near.
Tris flashed a quick grin at the griffon's nod, and scanned the mess of thick growth that yet separated her and the rats... and the tree-growth tangled goblins. Devan locks his foot into the crossbow's stirrup and quickly yanks back the string with his right hand, while drawing a bolt with his left and slapping it in place. Seeing that the rats are all clustered together he decides to go for something a little more...explosive. The bomb hits exactly where he wanted it to, splashing three of the rats with fire.
Arend tears into the rat next to him, hoping to end it quickly. The overgrown rodent avoids Arend's needle like teeth by ducking under a branch. The eidolon's talon catches it as it pops out the other side, piercing trough the rat with the points of its claws. Arend tries to grab the rat with the other foot as well, to tear it in half, but the nimble creature wiggles free, now bleeding badly.
Esaul gets suddenly desperate as none of the big rats were entangled by his spell and now are surrounding Light. He moves as fast as he can to get close and shots an arrow at one of the rats, helping the wolf and ignoring the goblin that shot him. "Light, attack!" Light attacks the enemy who tried to bite him in the previous round and cannot find purchase on the writhing rat.

Thondrir watches the rats eagerly, ready to lunge into action should they choose to pursue the injured griffon.
The griffon keys his right eye bearing down on Tris who approaches. His left eye surveys the fight against his pursuers.
The rats maul Light from almost all sides. One finds purchase on the wolf's paw potentially infecting it with disease. Two more goblin arrows launch toward and over their prey. The leader targets the obvious spell-caster again and hits the tree limb next to Esaul's head.

Devan Steed |

Devan picks his crossbow up off his knee and aims it at one of the rats that were burned by his bomb. We've got to get them down before they seriously injure Light. He exhales calmly pulling the stock into his shoulder. He lines up the shot and squeezes the trigger, but once again the bolt is deflected by the wreckage obscuring the rats. I guess Arend will have do the work this time, he thinks as he stirrups the crossbow, quickly reloading it.

Arend Corbin |

Arend continues to attack the rodent next to him with claw and tooth. He savages the cat sized rat with his maw of needle-like teeth, before turning to look for the next rat for him to prey on. He sees the other rodents swarming over Light and with a couple of swift hops closes the distance with the next one, screeching and baring his bloody teeth.

Kel "Elbows" Ursanel |

Elbows steps up and swings a mighty kick...and gets his foot caught by a severed root, barely keeping his balance. He glances quickly at his comrades and then back away again, grimacing in embarrassment.
He recovers enough to attempt to elbow the rat...and while his second blow isn't as graceless as the first, he's still off balance and the rat skitters easily out of his way. Grrrrr.
