Appearance
--------------------
Standing a mere 5’3” tall, Kel seems almost as broad chested as he is tall. Since leaving the Order of the Lion he’s traded his clean cut appearance and Taldan uniform for plain brown clothes (over his chain shirt) and a scruffy beard covering much of his pock-marked face. Bitter about life in Oppara, he consciously eschews any indication of high birth. The one giveaway is his shield: a gleaming, enchanted mithril beauty. He has had it painted with a bear on a field of grey (covering over it’s former Taldan colors, to better honor the memory of his grandfather).

Ht:5'3"
Wt:180 lbs
Age:24
Hair:Dark brown, unkempt
Eyes:Dark brown
Skin:Olive

--------------------
Personality
--------------------
* Was once firmly loyal to Taldor, now feels betrayed and scoffs at loyalty to any nation or royalty. Instead he is fiercely loyal to his compatriots (and his grandfather’s memory)
* Tendency not to know when to keep his mouth shut, especially in the presence of the hypocrisy or injustice
* Starts to itch for a brawl when frustrated

--------------------
Background
--------------------
More than eighty years ago, in honor of his bravery in defending Taldor from bandits and malevolent fey, Raymun Ursanel was granted the title of Baronet on a small fiefdom on the edge of the Word’s Edge Mountains. His son Lelwurf lacked his father’s bravery or skill in battle, but more than made up for it in political ambition, jockeying the family’s minor wealth and title into incrementally increasing influence in Oppara.

Kel Ursanel is Raymun’s grandson (and the youngest of Lelwurf’s three children). His childhood was split between Oppara (where his father spent all of his time) and his grandfather’s mountain fiefdom. His father and older siblings played the political games of Oppara with deadly seriousness...games which have grown more and more corrupt as the empire has declined. Kel, on the other hand, could never get the rules right. For that -- and for his tiny stature -- he was mocked and bullied, and learned the hard way to defend himself in fistfights.

Kel’s father Lelwurf wanted nothing to do with his father’s remote fiefdom, far from the capitol...but as Kel continued to prove himself embarrassingly bad at playing politics, Lewurf got Kel out of his hair by sending him to live with his grandfather on their mountain estate. Raymun was getting on in years at this point but was happy to raise his grandson, extolling him with stories of bravery in battle and the glory of Taldor. Around this time (while still short) Kel began to gain in strength. No longer bullied as he was back in Oppara, he took to seeking out and roughing up those who bullied others.

Three months before Kel’s fifteenth birthday, his grandfather died. Full of Raymun’s stories of Taldan glory, Kel enlisted in the Order of the Lion the day he turned fifteen. Hair cut short, clean-shaven, and dressed in bright Taldan blue and green, Kel vowed to protect and serve Taldor. He completed his training just over a year later….and within weeks he began to realize the depth of his mistake. Rather than follow in the footsteps of his grandfather Raymun’s glorious stories, the Order assigned him to be a ceremonial guard within the royal palace. He found himself surrounded by all the politics he loathed in his youth in the capitol...but now sworn to stand by in stoic silence, his disgust with the corrupt nobility growing with each passing day. Four months into his service in the Order he reached his breaking point: listening to two young nobles scheming about how to betray a fellow for political advantage, Kel narrowly restrained himself from busting the baronet’s nose...instead bloodying his hand shattering an expensive mirror before storming off.

Kel had largely avoided his father since returning to Oppara, finding he had no respect for the man. Kel’s rage at the venality of court life continued to seethe as thoughts of Taldor’s decline and his beloved grandfather’s legacy spiraled in his head. Suddenly his thoughts turned to Raymun’s prized shield -- which he’d prized more highly than his title -- and which now merely a prop above his scheming father’s mantle. Somehow this seemed the greatest of all the injustices, and Kel let himself into his father’s apartment, walked off with the shield, and turned his back on Taldor, and the Order pledged to serve it.

Kel wandered West, working his way across Avistan, finding opportunities to take out his outrage at hypocrisy and injustice on bullies (in and out of government)...which often led to a need to move on again. One night while staying at an inn in Varisia he happened to hear tell of Steed’s Samaritans. He sought them out and found himself drawn in by a genuine concern for what was Right...and just as much so by their democratic organization. For the first time since walking out on the Taldan Order of the Lion, Kel Ursanel found himself once again ready to join a group larger than himself. It was as a member of the Samaritans that Kel got the nickname “Elbows”: a nod toward his disinclination to carry a weapon in melee, instead assailing his foes with a flurry of fists, feet, knees, and elbows.
