"Witches never trust the fey. Their fortresses are strong and the shards will be well hidden. Magical defenses, secret places. And mistress rewards loyalty. Other fey would kill Vosi themselves and give his body to mistress to impress her."

22 new posts! Good job guys, it was a pleasure to read them! Now, let's try to catch up...

"I, for one, would not" Tiferet says as Eirikr claims no-one would stop him if he decided to kill Rohkar now. "Give him a hand, too" she adds with an icy glare.

Other than that, she stands silent as Eirikr's interrogation proves most fruitful. Most of their assumptions – the portal to Irrisen, the winter witches being behind this unnatural winter, the Mistress likely being one of them – are either confirmed of corroborated. Once it looks there's no more information that can be squeezed out of the man, she pulls some rope out of her backpack and grabs him by the collar.

"Thank you for your cooperation – now be a good prisoner and put your hands behind your back" she says threateningly. "If you don't like this solution, we can always resume the negotiations where we left them..." she adds, casting a sideways look at her axe.

Intimidate: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26

If he resists, Tiferet would try to grapple him and then go for the pin. Sorry, but this guy is capital E Evil and surrendered just before Eirikr could finish him. Tiferet would not let him go away scot-free.

Rolls:
Grapple: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Going for the pin: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

Once the matter has been dealt with, she turns to Vosi. "It looks like your best bet is to keep a low profile for a while. The only one who knows of you accompanying us is Fawfein, and if we have to cross the ford on our way back, with Lady Argentea by our side..." She leaves the sentence hanging, unwilling to speak the implications out loud.

"I know it's a long shot but... if we ever come to face this Mistress in her stronghold, we'll keep an eye out for the shards you mentioned. Consider it a favour for services rendered." There is nothing to suggest this is even a remote possibility, but the news of the fabled land of Irrisen being at most a couple of days march away from there has sparked something in her. But for now, the priority is to see Lady Argentea escorted safely back to Helren.

K(Local): Troll: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

"I plan to go to Irrisen... if we can reach the portal unguarded..." Inire pauses to hold that thought. "But it probably goes straight to some place that's being heavily guarded. So we couldn't really go that way, unless we were prepared for a real fight." she says, mostly to herself from her position on the floor. Her eyes dart from person to person, lingering on the blood on Eirikr for longer than most things.

”Yes, it will be guarded, and likely on both ends, I would suspect.” Morgraine says as she goes over to sit by Inire, who seemed upset by something. Not that Morgraine could truly blame her. Now that the fighting was over, her own legs felt wobbly and sitting seemed a very good idea just then.

She glances over at the girl beside her, then at the others. ”We are not likely to find Irrisen a pleasant place, if even half the stories are true. But if they went to this much trouble, opening portals, risking exposure, gathering ‘allies’ all to grab the Lady, then they are not likely to stop now just because of tonight.”

bluff if needed :): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

One of these days I am going to roll above a five or six, and when I do, watch out. :P

Also, given what has been said, does Morgraine know if witches with strongholds are fairly common in Irrisen, or does it sound like 'mistress' is pretty far up the power or social hierarchy ladder?

Universal Buffs: Nothing right now

"Bah, I'm not stupid enough to get myself killed," Rohkar mutters as he turns around, crossing his wrists behind his back. "You're taking me back to town to get locked up, right? Fine."

Vosi nods. "Fawfein may attack you. Try to kill you for tricking him. If he could recapture lady, then he could be rewarded for stopping tricking humans. Fawfein will be desperate. Fight to the death." He hesitates for a few moments. "If tricky humans can somehow reach the portal, Vosi will meet them there. Vosi will see if humans have a chance of getting into mistress's tower."

Inire:
Trolls are nasty, but they don't live in this area very much. You're not entirely sure what kind of troll lives in Irrisen, but it's probably a specific breed of troll.

Morgraine:
Having a stronghold isn't uncommon at all. Most witches at least have a manor house that's magically protected. The ones that are given control of a territory in Irrisen generally have castle or tower that's more heavily protected. Based on that, she likely has a title at least. How high in the social hierarchy she is depends on how long she's had this title, but you don't know how long she's held this 'tower'.

Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 10 meaning I fail as Morgraine's CHA is higher than Tiferet's WIS ;)

"The stories I've heard tell of wolves, giants, and trolls preying on the local population with the Witches' blessings, my Ulfen brothers and sisters little more than cattle under the heels of their Jadwiga overlords..." Tiferet adds to Morgraine's admonishment. "Like a fairy tale gone dark. A fairy tale trying to spill over into southern Taldor."

"Good luck then, Vosi" she wishes the fey. "Try to give any fey you stumble upon a wide berth in the meantime. It seems at least some of us are determined to reach and cross the Portal then. First, though, we'll have to see the gracious Lady escorted safely back to Heldren" she says with a courteous nod.

Tiferet's next moves would be to have Tacey show her around the lodge, see if she can find some more rope, tie the remaining bandits before they wake (as well as the last standing one), and try to recuperate any stolen goods the bandits might have stashed. She'll gladly share the burden with anyone else who'd wish to join ;)

With the necromancer dealt with, Eirikr quickly wipes the blood off of his mouth; it leaves a stain on his clothing but they were already darkened by other stains anyways. He feels the occasional glance from the other members of the party--Inire's gaze in particular seems to sting--so he turns to the closest door and walks through it without a word, to go sit in the snow. Leave dealing with nobles and prisoners to the others.

Perhaps worse than the glances, was the fact that Inire seemed to be trying not to make eye contact with Eirikr at all. Or to look in his direction, ever since the change. When she hears him walking across the room, she focuses on cleaning her weapon... but then when she hears the door close behind him, it startles her enough to look up. A look of guilt quickly flashes over her face, and a show of concern quickly follows, but Inire looks away once more, down to her sword.

She just... didn't know how to deal with all of these things. At all. Eating people? That wasn't good. That was very very far from good. Did that make her bad? What about Tiferet, offering to renege on the deal they had made with the necromancer, who was very clearly evil, to deliver him to town rather than kill him. Or Eve, who was suggesting simply letting them go free.

They'd saved the 'princess', but ultimately, was that even the right thing to do? Inire sighs, and sheathes her sword. She looks to the noblewoman, thinking she should ask why she'd been taken. Then looks to the door where Eirikr had gone. That was more important.

She slipped to the door, and slid out of it quietly, moving crunchily through the snow after the young man. "You didn't say anything. About being a werewolf." she said, not joining him in the snow. She kept her voice low.

Male Skinwalker (Witchwolf) Lunar Oracle 3/Guardian 1 HP: 37 AC: 15 CMD: 15 Initiative: +1

Eirikr is still sitting on the porch of the lodge when Inire walks up behind him. He jumps a little at the sound of her voice and for a second he thinks he should just start to walk away, into the forest--he's pretty sure none of them could find him, based on the fact he'd been the one doing the trailblazing the last few days, but he decides against it. Ashen interposes himself between the two and starts to growl at her, but Eirikr hisses something in the wolf's ear; he whines a little before trotting away, but still stays close to the two (semi)humans.

"Cause it wouldn't've been true. I'm not a werewolf," he says, glancing back at her, offering just a bare hint of a smile--or perhaps a smirk. "Hope you didn't get out your torch and pitchfork yet."

Vosi flies off quietly, clearly still looking a bit off-put.

If you want Tacey to do something, ask her.

"Then... why'd you bite that guy? And what's going to happen to him? What's going to happen to you? What are you?" Inire asks, her voice still low, and blending concern with sincerity, alongside inquisitiveness with the practiced expertise of someone who often lived them.

"If he cleans the wound properly, or sees a healer--absolutely nothing. Otherwise, it might fester. But that's it," says Eirikr, as he stands up off of the stoop and turns to face her. He looks in her direction, but not directly at her; his eyes dart back and forth to the woods as he talks. "Bit him because it was a fight. Or, it was about to be in a second. And that was easier then getting out my sword. Never really trained with a sword."

He breathed in deeply, thinking about the last two questions she had asked him, trying to decide what to tell her--how to explain it. If he could explain it. These were tough questions, it seemed, even for someone who occasionally dreamed about the future. "What will happen to me--I don't really know. Does anybody know what will happen to them? I'll bet you didn't expect that you'd end up rescuing a princess when you got to Heldren, did you? I didn't."

"And what I am--I don't really know. I just know I'm not a werewolf," he says, his eyes no longer flitting between her and the forest, instead squarely fixed on the ground, so she can't meet his gaze. "Should I start running, then? Usually it's sporting to give somebody a head start with this sort of thing."

Before Vosi Leaves "What if we faked your death, Would the mistress know? The scouts at the river will likely attack us and we'll have to fight we could disguise one as you and let you live out your days however you wish."

If we even have to disguise one, I doubt their leader even knows how many fey she rules over much less what they look like.

"Speaking of, Tiferet isn't wrong. We'll still have to deal with the fey at the river and his pet but if we kill him Vosi will likely have a much better chance of survival."

Eve pokes one of the bodies with her foot."We can't really get all of these guys to the town, what are we going to do with them?"

Eve was good with words. So... just be the heroine.

"Not closely. Mistress has many servants. Won't bother checking without reason. Unless she learns what Vosi did, Vosi will be alright for now. But mistress will learn eventually. Witches are tricky. Know how to find out secrets." He hesitates for a moment as he's about to leave. "If humans can help Vosi, Vosi will stay with humans, but humans would have to go to mistress's tower to help him."

Vosi looks at Morgraine. "Forgot, humans don't actually know mistress. Mistress is the Lady Nazhena Vasilliovna. She was given command of the Pale Tower by Queen Elvanna to help opening the Winter Portal. Tower is center of witch's control near human village. Vosi forgets the name."

Morgraine:
The name is certainly familiar to you. She was something of an upstart in Whitethrone when you were last there, though she clearly had potential. Lydillia took her in as a member of the coven not long before you were exiled. Apparently she's either taken her mother's title or been given her own holdings.

Eirikr sits back down as Inire goes back into the lodge. He wonders if he said the right thing. Or the wrong thing. Or both. He wonders if Inire will stab him in the back or if she won't. He never was good talking to women. Or people, quite honestly. He rests his head in one of his hands; Ashen walks up to him and starts to try to nuzzle against him; but Eirikr pushes him away, instead.

Unable to climb through windows as her companion had, Kettu had remained outside during the fighting and now sat a few paces from Eirikr and Ashen. She tilts her head, looking at the man intently a moment before getting up and moving to sit beside him, not touching, simply sitting. Suddenly, her head swivels back to the door as if listening to something going on inside. The fox stares for a moment then licks her paw. And sits.

At the same time that Kettu suddenly stared as if through the door, one of Morgraine's eyebrow raised as if trying to climb off her forehead, though she quickly smoothed her features once more. So quick to power? She was gifted, true - but still! She nods as if digesting Vosi's words, though inside her mind raced. She wondered if Lydillia still ruled, how much else might have changed since she left, but did not dare to ask just then. Instead,

"Thank you Vosi. If you can think of anything else, speak now. The more we know about our enemy, the more effective action we can take, yes?"

"They have legs. They walked all the way here from the road but two days ago, they can do it again. Disarmed and properly tied up, of course" Tiferet says trying to assuage Eve's doubts.

This is a discussion we actually had in a Kingmaker PbP... In the end, we concurred the guards:prisoners ration in US prisons is about 1:5; in our case, considering Ashen, Kettu, Tacey, Lady Argentea (which might be a bit of a stretch, but they can still make perception checks) it's basically 1:1. If we tie their hands and form a column, I believe it should be doable – unless they have ranks in Escape Artist, they probably won't be able to beat a DC 24 DEX check to free themselves.

One thing's sure: Tiferet's not challenging 10 guys to a duel :)

"Looks like we've just got involved in something quite big, eh Nath? It seems our roads are going to lead us much further than Zimar, after all." She nods as her friend reminds them of the work still to do. "Right. We'll need more rope to make sure they won't present any threat once they wake up. Tacey, do you know if there's any to be found around here?" she asks the young half-orc. "Since we're there, can you show me around the lodge? There must be plenty of stolen goods lying around."

Inire shrugged, seemingly to herself. It was lacking in any sort of emphatic energy. She then turned her attention to Rhokar, "What happened to the people who should have been here in this lodge..?"

Vosi thinks for a moment. "Mistress recently took an apprentice. Little foreign boy who was her family's servant who had magic talent. Trained him to use his power. Open secret that they're sharing a bed." He looks down at Nathara, looking thoughtful again. "Stupid, but Vosi believes you will try. Vosi will see you soon. Going to check what traps are ahead. Meet Vosi here again before going deeper into the woods. Vosi not going anywhere with summer weather."

Tacey looks over at Tiferet. "If ya' need rope, there's boxes a' the stuff down in the cellar or out in the tool shed. Never can have enough rope." She just nods. "I can show you around the lodge quick. Rohkar's got a strong box in his room." She points to one of the doors off the main room, the second one away from the front entrance. "And there's a bunch more supplies in the storeroom upstairs. Rohkar's the only one allowed in there too come to think of it."

Rohkar just shrugs. "The Sentinels? Some of them were out on patrols and probably went for help. Most of what's left of 'em is in a ditch out in the woods. The ones that are still intact are right there." He points to his skeletons.

Inire nods slowly once more. "What were their names? And the name of the bandit you killed?" she asked, digging out her charcoal and book.

"The Sentinels' names? How would I know that? I don't care who they were. They were just some forest scouts. The one I killed over there was name Olov. Think he was from the River Kingdoms or something like that."

Meanwhile, Tiferet and Tacey head into Rohkar's room and fairly easily find his strongbox under the bed. Inside, there is a virtual mound of treasures, including:
- A small gold ingot engraved with the seal of Taldor
- A brass spyglass
- A silver ring
- Three small tiger eye stones
- A pair of exceptionally fine boots with some odd patterns on them.
- A silver dagger
- A silver holy symbol of Norgorbor
- A leather bound portfolio containing several scrolls

Perception DC 20:
The dagger seems to have a hidden compartment in the hilt. Inside, you find a vial of what appears to be some kind of poison.

Spellcraft or Knowledge Arcana DC 16:
One scroll of Endure Elements.

Spellcraft or Knowledge Arcana DC 16:
Two scrolls of Magic Weapon.

Spellcraft or Knowledge Arcana DC 16:
One scroll of Unseen Servant.

Tiferet twitches visibly as Rohkar nonchalantly describes the Sentinels' grim fate... but then manages to restrain herself. Instead, she vents her anger on the last remaining skeleton, the (un)living proof of the desecration the Order's warriors.

Coup-de-grace on the last skeleton.

"Are there any more keys we might need, necromancer?" she asks in a monotonous, flat voice. Once her curiosity has been sated, she follows Tacey in the adjacent room and gathers all the goods she can find, asking Lady Argentea if she recognizes some of them. "We've also recovered a pendant and your signet ring well hidden in your coach. The bandits must have overlooked them."

It's not technically helpless, but it doesn't fight back as you smash it up. Also, you haven't quite gone upstairs yet. That's the treasure from Rohkar's room on the main floor. I'll get to the upper level in a moment.

Rohkar sighs as his life's work is beaten to bone meal by the Ulfen woman. "No, those are the only ones. There's a key to the front door hanging on a hook by it, but that's it."

Lady Argentea takes the ring and nods. "Yes, this is mine. I managed to slip it off when the bandits tried to grab me and hide it. I had hoped that someone would recognize it and come looking for me if the carriage was discovered. The pendants was from my jewelry box. I wasn't carrying much with me though." She accepts the piece back and slides them on, looking a bit more comfortable now.

With that done, Tiferet and Tacey head upstairs to examine the storeroom. The first room appears to be more of a planning room. A large table takes up most of the room, surrounded by chairs, and a large map of the entire region is hung on one wall, with rough circles drawn onto it. The door to the next room is locked, though Rohkar's other key opens it easily enough. Inside, Tiferet finds a storeroom with several boxes... and a cage holding a rather unhappy looking sprite.

Sorry, I'll edit my post then! I thought that since Rohkar came from down the stairs, that was where his room is...

We bid farewell to one, we gain another.

"Hi little one. Let me guess. You came here through a portal from Irrisen with a big, nasty beast of a Troll called Teb Knotten, you don't hold humans in any particular regard and the one called Rohkar least of all, your Mistress, the Winter Witch Nazhena Vasilliovna, is going to break your shard if your ever betray her, and you're about to teach me some curse words in Sylvan. How am I going?"

The sprite opens his mouth, then shuts it again immediately. He slumps in the cage, looking distinctly unhappy. "Nosy humans know too much already. You don't work for Rohkar. Let me out! Let me out of here!"

"This... can be arranged. We'll need some reassurances first, though" she says as she brings the cage with her down the stairs, casting a sideways glance at the map while mentally noting its potential importance.

"For those of you who were starting to miss the sound of fluttering wings and invectives, I have good news. No Ashen. Don't let your hopes get too high."

Tacey gathers up the rest of the boxes, bringing them down with her as Tiferet carries the caged fey. The boxes contain:
- A lockbox with 15 pp, 150 gp, and 180 sp
- Three oily potions
- Six alchemist's fires
- Two scrolls that seem to be written in a strange combination of two very different languages.

Spellcraft or Knowledge Arcana DC 16:
The potions are all oils of magic weapon.

Spellcraft or Knowledge Arcana DC 17:
Two scrolls of Lesser Animate Dead.

Knowledge Geography or Linguisitcs DC 17:
The two languages on the scroll are Infernal and Sylvan. This is a very strange combination of wording and structure though.

The fey scowls. "I'm not going to help nasty humans. You're here to interfere with mistress's plans, aren't you? Not going to let you trick me. No, no, no."

Nathara takes the spell book, without looking into it and puts it away as soon as it comes up. As a curtesy she looks around whether everyone is fine with that, but she would very hesitant to leave a necromancer's spell book in anyone's but her own protection. Still it feels strange to hold another wizard's spell book. Wizard's kill each other in battles and feuds, they do all kinds of things to each other mundane people would not even dream about in their worst nightmares. But a spell book is something very deeply personal.

Thus she handles it carefully and respectfully.

Afterwards she takes care to organize ropes, restraint the prisoners and tries to find the way to fortify the cottage and secure the room they use as prison. She asks Tacey for help every now and then.

Eventually she joins up with Tiferet again. As she witnesses the scene with fey in a cage she can't help but be a bit amused. "Don't worry, since you're caged anyway, no human is going to trick you." She was a bit curious whether the fey was clever enough to figure out that she wasn't human.

"I am Nathara. Who mights thee be, noble spirit of the first world?" she adds with a smirk and shares a look with Tiferet. While she did learn from elves she is fluent in Sylvan. That she did not admit that to Vosi makes her feel (slightly) ashamed, but now might not be the best time to admit that either.

Is the fey male or female? Also, what is in the stable to the south?

Universal Buffs: Nothing right now

The fey eyes Nathara carefully. "If anything, I should trust you less demon-spawn. Vrixx is my name and I won't say a word about anything. Let me go!" He rattles the bars of the birdcage rather uselessly and slumps, his normal pale glow dying entirely as he sits on the floor of the cage.

Tacey looks confused for a moment at her question. "Weren't you lot taking the lady back to town and having the town guard look Rohkar and his gang up? Sending them off tramping through the woods by herself would be dangerous, especially with the fey around."

The sprite is clearly male. And no one has checked the stable yet since the doors are closed.

Nathara nods at Tacey's question: "We are going back to Heldren. But it seems too dangerous at the moment - I don't think it's a good idea to move over night." She turns to Tiferet. "Unless... you think otherwise?"

To Vrixx she return: "But of course you won't. Even if it does not make our decision whether or not to let you out any lighter." Offering food had worked well with Vosi and while this one appeared to be a bit smarter (if not exactly bright) it was worse a shot. "Here, we would not want you to die of hunger and thirst in the mean time - if you can find it in yourself to accept a gift from a demon-spawn." Nathara did not know a lot about fey but accepting a gift had a special meaning to them as far as she knew. She tried to find some nuts and raisins in her rations and hand them to fey in the unworthy predicament, careful to not be enchanted herself.

Sorry, but I don't see who that's a response to?

With the majority of the talking going on upstairs... Inire is being Lookout Mouse. But she's trusting Eirikr to lookout outside, and she's simply keeping an eye on the bandits.

When Rohkar shares the name he does know, she scribbles something in the back of her book, then draws a long, thin line across.

Also Eve wouldn't be looking over the loot yet so she wont call the spy glass IC
