Game Master RinValak

An action-espionage game set in 1990's Chicago with supernatural elements, using a modernized 5th Edition.

I might be interested in one more player for this campaign, so post if interested.

It's a sort of urban-espionage adventure set in 90's Chicago, see campaign info for more info. Sorry for being intentionally vague, but I think it's worth it. Feel free to read up in Gameplay for sample.

The system is based on a Modern d20 converted into 5e (link on info). I'm running it system-light and RP-heavy, so it will be even more simplified than the system already has been in the conversion.

You'd be playing separate from the current player-character for awhile but would eventually meet up. Character creation info below:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your character is a regular person who's extremely good at their particular occupation, whatever that may be. So if you're a college student, then you're a 4.0 prodigy, or a gifted inventor beloved by your tech professor. If you're a burnt-out retired cop, then you were a damn good one back in your day, and the guys at the station still tell stories about you.
*Standard D&D 5e attribute set (15,14,13,12,10,8), OR customized via point buy
*No race
*Choose one Basic Class
*Choose one Background
Dotting for interest. How much time do I have before you close the recruitment?
Patrick O'Leary
Human
Monk
Soldier
* Option 1: Marine - Gulf War vet going to school on the GI Bill
* Option 2: FBI - Stationed in Chicago is the weird bureau
* Option 3: Chicago PD - in the special weird department (like the Dresden Files)
FWIW - I actually grew up during this time in Chicago, so I know this time and place well.
@Pennate, Until I pick the 1 person
@Jubal, Of the three I'd prefer option 1 since that's more of a "regular person". And the basic classes are: Charismatic Hero, Dedicated Hero, Fast Hero, Smart Hero, Strong Hero, and Tough Hero.
As for growing up in Chicago of that era--hopefully I won't butcher it too badly, only been there once :D
Ah. I was looking for a 5e game DnD not Modern rules.
So, I'll bow down out.
Have fun! Cheers
If it makes any difference, it's this system:
d20 Modern for D&D 5th Edition
Shadow Lodge
This seems pretty interesting. I like the look of the ruleset too. I just watched the new Blade Runner, and I'm feeling up for a mystery.
I don't suppose you have any other information you'd be willing to share at the moment would you? I'm just trying to think of something other than the iconic Chicagoan P.I. which seems cliche. Of course if I did, I would be sure to put more detail than that. But I do want to ask, are you looking for cliches?
Also, what's up with the "8:40pm, friday night."?
EDIT: Sorry my post is just a weird stream of consciousness.
For quick one-line character concepts was thinking of:
  • A PI whose father was a local legend hard-boiled detective. He's trying to follow in dad's footsteps, but he's more the thoughtful type than the scrapper his father was.
  • A cat burglar with tangential ties to the Mafia. Tries to avoid getting too caught up in underworld politics, but he's got a rep now and the fellas have taken an interest.
  • A promising Engineering student who is the child of immigrant parents. His day job gets in the way of his studies as much as he needs the money, but he's by all accounts brilliant.
  • A moderately experienced Investigative Reporter or photojournalist. Being a workaholic means he's got very little social life and the few people who stick around don't see him much.
I'll try to give a bit more info that may also help decide on a character. I'm not looking for cliches, but I'm OK with it if that's the character you're most interested in. Being enthusiastic about a character idea can easily make a cliche into something unique.
All player characters start as regular people who get pulled into the world below the surface and embroiled in all the weird secret s+&$ going on that the government covers up/partakes in/doesn't know about.
@"8:40pm, friday night": I was intending to use it as a sort of global clock, for continuity sake.
@your character ideas: Try to amp each one up a little further in what they're good at. Basically take the concept and bump it to a level 1 hero level. So a brilliant PI who just made headlines for solving a huge case, a nationally infamous cat burglar, a promising engineering student who's paper just got published and is being considered for a Nobel prize, a dedicated war photojournalist known for navigating in and out of warzones and blockaged countries.
Shadow Lodge
@Cliches: I generally agree with that, its pretty important to be invested. I was more just wondering if you would veto any sort of noir trope, which in hindsight was pretty silly of me.
@Global Clock: Yeah, I figured that out literally the morning after I posted that, haha. That pesky time limit for the editting prevented me from erasing it before you saw *Shakes fist*
@Character Ideas: I see, I guess we had different ideas of what level 1 should look like. I get it though, one should be distinguished, not simply good at one's job.
I'll give it some more thought before I give you an answer. I don't feel as though I've narrowed it down yet.
Shadow Lodge
I think I'm going to bow out. I already have a spotty track record and I'm not feeling like I can really make this work long term. Thanks for the interesting prompt and the system info.
No worries :) Appreciate the honesty
That leaves recruitment still open for 1 new player
Innocent bump
Posting Rate?
No requirement, the more the better
Cool. As i’ve said before i can currently only stably post on friday, staurday and sunday. I will be able to post more next year though (job change).
Are psychic or urban Arcana advanced classes allowed (i’m thinking far ahead here)
A couple of questions/requests
1. Can you roll perception and insight for me? As my posting rate is slower it would be helpful.
2. Are psychic or urban arcana advanced classes allowed? (i’m thinking far ahead here)
3. Are we using feats?
4. How many points do we get if we choose custom point buy?
So reliably over the weekend, and maybe randomly on weekdays? Or not at all on weekdays?
@Advanced classes: We'll see when we get that far and what fits in the story. Can't give you a sure answer atm.
1: If it speeds things up I can do that.
2:
3: This D20 > 5e conversion is pretty barren for feats, but at level 4 you're probably welcome to pick one on there instead of an ability upgrade. I'll vet them once we're closer to that level. At character creation I also grant a unique feat themed for the character that's light on power but adds flavor. For example Sang-mi's is a lighter version of the Martial Arts Training feat and monk ability.
Thank you.
Cool. I have a couple of ideas
As expected. (Same PB as the standard array)
I was thinking an investigator type character. Not sure about background.
Advanced Class: Investigator
Base Class: Smart Hero
Sorry for historically inaccurate backstory
Said Backstory:
? was raised on a small farm. He loved literature of all minds but above all in his mind were mystery stories. He loved trying to guess who had committed the crime.
He worked less and less, committing his time to reading. He eventually left, hoping to learn more in other places. When he reached the city he got caught up in a series of mysteries.
I will elaborate more on the mysteries.
1) Am I allowed to have him already working for the CSB?
2) Is there anything I should change to fit the workd better?
-Not already working for CSB
-No Advanced class (cool if that was just plans for later)
-Don't see any historical inaccuracies in backstory
-Give a bit more history, and emphasis on how they're good at their occupation.
Here's the original prompt:
Doing another interest check. Still looking to add 1 player to the game.
System is 5e with some things modified to fit modern times.
You wouldn't be joining the 'party' immediately, but would be introduced with your own storyline for awhile until the two plots converged. Feel free to read gameplay if curious what the game's like.
One mo' bump.
Promise you don't have to memorize the system or anything :]
