I think logically we are past the prime directive already. They know we exist and our technology is here. Refusing to attempt to stop the siasmic activity would be putting the needs of a people we will eventually be making further contact with at risk.

I disagree. Our goal here is to mitigate the extent of information this new culture gets from us. We are not really supposed to save these people. Since there is the existence of technology from another more advanced culture present, we need to investigate that tech and ascertain what we can do to negate premature technological advancement of this species.

Don't feel bad. I was diagnosed with a sinus infection on Friday and have been trying to sleep it off (with meds) so that I do not have to miss teaching summer scbool..

RE: The Prime Directive

There are lots of good philosophical discussions to be had with regard to the prime directive, but I don't worry too much about having the right answer out of character. In character, the Directive provides a good source of personal and narrative conflict. It is also, in game terms, a Directive.

How do you want us to do character logs, Commanding Officer, etc.?

Stress 5/10

The fact that it's alien technology gives us some wiggle room. Plus until we find out more this could be some malfunctioning probe etc.

People have no doubt noted my posting rate going down, sorry about that. I have some health stuff going on but only short term. I'll try to keep up as best I can but bot me if needed.

Very weird. I posted, and the play by post forums shows me as the last poster in the gameplay thread, but my post isn't showing up even after a force refresh. Can anybody else see it? (I'm hoping it shows up and I'll see it after my cache expires.)

I watched Voyager's episode(s) the Equinox on Friday, great episodes. Is space combat fun in this version of the game?

I think space combat is a lot of fun and does an especially good job of feeling like a scene from the shows. Everyone has good options for participating in combat. Doctors have maybe the least interesting options, but even they have things to do once bad things start happening to your ship.

I chose a scenario here that didn't involve ship combat so that we could learn the system.

Have we lost some people? Need more direction? What's up?

I'm partially thinking of bluffing him if he doesn't back down. "I fear we have failed in our protocols and must remove this disruption to your culture. Evacuate our vessel, the terminate protocol has been engaged, it will fly into your sun, I do not wish to see your people come to harm. All of our personal will be terminated."

Dramatic pose "I'm sorry it came to this. But we can no longer harm you with our presence. We will abide by our principles to protect you from us even if it costs us dearly. We have to activate the Heizenberg compensator."

As we all stoically start to disappear... and the Bastion uses it's over ride codes to remote control the ship to fly into the sun... what are they going to do threaten to kill us. -Could be a fun bluff ruse.

Stress 5/10

From Gareb's point of view Dr. Forrest is firmly becoming a big concern.

The Tesla might not have a warp core but it likely has phasers, replicators, an emergency transporter as well as sensors an computer systems way in advance of what this world can currently create... possibly some kind of torpedoes... and these guys were willing to take this tech at gun point. They've backed down a bit but still... they keep threatening.

Interesting though. Gareb can sympathise with them more easily than Forrest.

Good. I was hoping to create some ambiguity. Difficult choices are more fun than easy choices.

You cannot fault the Lormeans that they want the technology but Forrest and maybe his crew have probably been giving these aliens the wrong information. Without this crew, the Lormeans should be scared of the Bastion and what it can do, if harm befalls us.

Stress 5/10

We haven't played up our ship intentionally, they likely don't get the full extent of the technology gap.

I'll be honest I'm finding a pretty big disconnect with the Federation scientists not being beholden to the Prime Directive in some form. I was always under the impression it was Federation Law so they'd be at least adherents to it. Vulcans are one of the founding species and it's a very big deal to them having learned it the hard way.

Worf's foster brother Nikolai in TNG certainly seemed to be supposed to be sticking with it- though was definitely not as they discovered. He was not a member of Starfleet but was a Federation scientist. Unfortunately researching it... Federation Law is often just seen through the lens of Starfleet due to almost everyone in the shows being members of Starfleet.

I apologize for not addressing this earlier. I had intended to reply and forgot. My intention in the characterization of these scientists was that they were more emotionally connected to these Lormeans than was healthy. Most of them were not biologists, and not used to dealing with living creatures. They dealt mostly with issues of astrophysics, not sociology or even biology. Also, their mission was to study spatial anomalies, not make contact with an intelligent species. The Lormean contact struck a chord with them, they had a bit of Stockholm Syndrome. I don't think I managed to convey most of that, obviously, but that was my justification for their actions.

Can we have a bit of a debrief and thoughts about moving forward? I think there is some tension in the group about what roles everyone is playing. I'd also like some sense of what kind of adventure you guys would like to face next. Unless you are happier to just roll with the next episode. That is also fine.

I am having fun but am a little frustrated with this game. I do not know the system as well as others and am still trying to make sense of command structure. Kestra has said that she wants to keep the game going and in that I am in agreement. However, I would ask that Kestra's player take into account the fact that not everyone is as familiar with the rules as others might be. I would also ask that Kestra's player take into account that other characters might want to be able to do things within their rank system.

For example, this last order that I gave was to fire on the scuttled ship. However, that order had already been given. I understand wanting to move the story along but I think it would also be good to allow other players to do things. This might slow the game down a bit but it would also help people to learn the system and command rank a bit better than those who are familiar with it. These kinds of things can ensure that everyone can participate and not only one character gets to shine in every single encounter.

Just my two cents.

F Betazoid [spoiler=Attributes] Control 11, Fitness 7 , Presence 9 , Daring 10, Insight 10 , Reason 9 [ /spoiler] [ spoiler=Disciplines] Command 3, Security 3, Science 3, Conn 5 , Engineering 1 , Medicine 1 [ /spoiler]

To be fair, I never played this system before myself. I think you and I were recruited at the same time. Maybe I was jumping into the system head first, I do not know.

Kestra got a bit more screen time mostly because of her family. I imagine that I live in a different time zone than most of you. Was not trying to ruffle any feathers.

Stress 5/10

I've found in the adventures so far you have ones where different characters will take the fore over others. But the system is different than many others I've played and I do find some parts harder to keep a handle on.

It can be tough to do rank systems in an RPG at the best of times, this seems doubly so for PBPs where multiple posts can go by in a short period where you might have chimed in early on with regard to a subject in a round the table game. I'll be honest I'm still getting used to the new characters, it's been quite a shift in dynamics.

I dont think you were either but issuing commands that you might not necessarily have been able to give, like firing onto something, when a higher rank of officer is there, was kind of confusing.

I think everyone is here for the same reason, and everyone wants the whole group to have a good time. I'm just trying to keep communications open.

As for the next episode, I think I have that figured out.

Just a quick question, where are we in the timeline? Previously I had been under the assumption that we were near the end of the Dominion War, after the Breen joined in. But, the stardate in that post puts us a couple of years before the war even started, and I'm now quite confused. :-)

I copied the stardate from a published adventure, so maybe they messed up or I did. My intent is that we be in the heart of the war.

Stress 5/10

The published adventures that they do are about Season One or Two of DS9.

Also to be fair muddling up stardates is a Star Trek tradition... I mean some of the episodes where Tasha Yar was running around are dated for after the one where she died...
