the orc takes another arrow in his chest, but doesn't go down
will save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 d'oh.
Seeing the orc continue to slowly lift his greataxe up for another swing, Vanovar veers off from the orcs about to maul him to protect Rowanne, bringing his spear around and stabbing the orc
two arrows and a longspear through it, the creature still lunges forward five ft to slash at rowanne.
greataxe: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 161d12 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
... missing her, offbalance, and bleeding profusely, it looks ready to collapse but still intent on trying to raise its axe again.
the other orcs split up while vanovar is distracted, approaching Cyrixs and Venji
Cyrixs you drew and moved 10 ft, so i'll leave you at your init spot. Vanovar, i don't know if you want to take attacks of opportunity on the orcs. you only know the one attacking you was an illusion for sure.
aoo on light green bandana: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 131d8 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
aoo on dark hair: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 141d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
will save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
will save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
well, ok, now you're pretty sure they're all illusions =)
venji, your readied attack goes off as the orc approaches you, and misses. cyrixs, back to you.

Damage if hit: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (3, 2) + 6 = 11
Vanovar Taleishin

Oh man, I underestimated how awesome combat Reflexes and a reach weapon is.
Also, Cyrixs, hate to poop on your parade, but Rowanne is a ranged fighter, so doesn't threaten close up. No flanks for you. :(
"Guys, I'm pretty sure none of these things are real. I poked them all with my spear, but I feel no resistance. Something fishy is going on."
Also, Goat Master, great work on the map so far, and for incorporating it in your title. Looks really sweet!
Lady Rowanne of Bridgeford
|
omg I am pulling a kwinten on my will save :P Anyway, Cyrixs had his action, so its back to me
I want to believe you Vanovar. Maybe I need to get more physical with them.
Figuring she might have to physically attack the Orcs like Vanovar did, Lady Rowanne takes a step back five foot step, drops her bow, and indead draws her greatsword.
Come and get me you big brute! For justice!
its late and thinking is hard. I think I'm out of actions, if not, I'm going total defense
Vanovar Taleishin
|
You still have a standard left. Five-foot step, move action to draw sword.
And don't worry, I don't intend to draw this fight out for seven rounds. >_>
"All right, that's it. Attacking a woman, that's understandable. Ganging up on an enemy, I get that. But ignoring the man who's been itching for a fight all day, that's just mean. COME AND GET ME, YOU BASTARDS!"
Attack roll on the one closest to Rowanne: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 141d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
If that kills the Orc, go in flanking position with Cyrixs.
| Goat Master |
well, without the flank cyrixs' swing is a miss.
Milady, yeah, you can even stand your ground, drop your bow, and draw your greatsword and attack this round and get flank, instead of readying if you'd like. or do you have a martyr complex?
Vanovar overhands into the one closest to rowanne, cutting him from shoulder to gut. he drops, convlulsing, and shudders to a stop, then moves into a position to flank with cyrix.
[r3] [8: Venja], [7: orcs], [5: Cyrixs ],
[r4] [10: Rowanne], [9: Vanovar],
venji should have a turn, he's still readying b/c the orc illusion got killed by Vanovar, so it gets back around to Venji, continue to ready? or move and act?
Venja Bela Prestor
|
Move up Venja, this half-orc has the perfect distraction. Show them that you know how to swing a mace
Venja rumbles in, and tries to smack the nearest orc over the head
HMace, Orc west: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 211d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
| Goat Master |
Venja moves in, swings away with the heavy mace and cracks the orc in the skull, blood splatters everywhere in a five ft radius, drenching everything.
venja's will save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
suspicious, venja suddenly realizes he can sort of see through the gore, the orcs, as if they weren't real
i'll call it, with one illusionary or left, it attempts to flee, and is cut down, or flees and disippates. Sensing something amiss, you search the area, but only find a faint wiff of pipe smoke in the air. Checking yourselves, your injuries aren't real, and you head out, continuing your way to the crypt, unsure what to make of the encounter.
Lady Rowanne of Bridgeford
|
Having defeated the Orcs and back on the road again, Rowanne is disturbed. Not wanting to be caught unaware again, she now walks trough the forest with her bow out.
"This was a most strange encounter. Have any of you experienced something like this before? I have not and it disturbs me that anyone would attack us wich such powerfull illusions."
Vanovar Taleishin
|
Vanovar looks very upset, and keeps muttering to himself all throughout the journey.
"Blasted Orcs don't even have the decency to put up a good fight. I challenged them, and they ignore me. Do I look too strong? Should I wear less armour so I look like weaker prey? But that's blasphemy, a warrior should always be armed and armoured; they're just too cowardly to fight me. Yeah, that's it, I bet the next Orcs we encounter will have the decency to attack me, that's only natural.
"Huh, what's that, Rowanne? Yeah, illusions, very bad, not honourable at all. If they were capable of doing magic, at least conjure two or three more, then it'd be a fair fight."
Cyrixs
|
"That certainly was odd....do you think it they were hallucinations caused by something we inhaled?..There was some trace of pipe weed in the air, you all smelled it right?"
"We better keep moving through, just in case it's location based"
Venja Bela Prestor
|
Now you've done it, Venja, you're attacking imaginary monsters now. And it's not even past mid-day. What did you have, Venja? And in what order?
I'm glad we didn't encounter any orcs so far, which weren't trying to attack us. Venja remarks, pondering the sudden appearance of illusions along this road. I'm glad we managed to not kill them.
Lady Rowanne of Bridgeford
|
Hm. Good point Cyrixs. We better pass that spot on the way back. If its location based we should get attacked again. Maybe we can find out more. It would be a dangerous trap to leave for some poor villager to stumple into.
| Goat Master |
Travelling the rest of the day is mostly peaceful. Its relatively easy to follow the map. The sunlight begins to fade eventually as you travel though. And a cold wind begins to rattle through the leafless forest. With no sign of civilization in sight, the sounds of the forrest really surround you.
You eventually find a suitable spot, and set up your tents, and get a little fire started, cooking up some of the trail rations so they're at least hot. After dinner, you hear a howling off in the distance. The image of werewolves dances briefly in your mind.
As it gets later, the embers slowly dying down from the fire, the howling can be heard again. Vanovar, Venja, you're almost certain it sounds closer...
rowanne: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (13) - 1 = 12
vanovar: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
venja: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
crixs: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Vanovar Taleishin
|
Vanovar looks a bit upset, and his eyes nervously shift left and right, trying to locate where the sounds are coming from.
"Er, guys? I think these wolves are getting closer. Should we put out some food for them, so they won't bother us, or would that attract even more trouble? Not that I'm scared or anything.
"Another thing, should we divide watches? I'm not terribly sleepy at the moment, so I could stay awake for a few more hours, but I guess some of us could use their beauty sleep."
If I'm doing first watch, I'll cast Light on my armour whenever it runs out. I'm sure the fire will provide some light, but maybe I need to get away from it in a hurry.
Lady Rowanne of Bridgeford
|
"Hm. They dont sound closer then before to me, but it might be a good idea to stoke up the fire. Humans are normally not prey for wolves"
Rowanne stoaks up the fire untill it gives off a good amount of light and warmth. "If they dont come any closer it is a good idea to divide watches. Do we all take 1/4th of the night? Or do you want to devide the night in half, so there are two people watching at the time?"
Vanovar Taleishin
|
Assuming a rest of 12 hours, three watches of four or four of three is best. That way, everyone gets at least 8 hours of sleep and isn't fatigued. Two watches means these two people will be dead tired.
"I said I'm not sleepy just yet, doesn't mean I can go on for six more hours. I'll go wake someone in three hours or so, and I don't care who I have to wake. Just thought it'd be a nice gesture to let you determine who'll have to listen to my snoring."
Venja Bela Prestor
|
Finally some rest. It's been a long trek. Let me stand guard in the morning, that's when a man is at his best. He only gets more miserable during the day, that's what my brother used to tell me.
Are you talking about your brother now, Venja? That pompous brat? He was always sharp until late in the evening, Venja. What a miserable sack of meat!
Cyrixs
|
"I can see in the dark.. I'll take the 3th watch..that one will most likely be the darkest"
"..and I'll have had a good 8 hours rest so I should be well rested by then.."
Lady Rowanne of Bridgeford
|
No problem. I will take second watch then. Keep that fire burning hot. That should keep the wolves away.
Lady Rowanne sets out her bedroll close to the fire and takes off her armor before tucking in. She keeps her bow and sword withing reach however.
Vanovar Taleishin
|
Vanovar keeps a single ration in arm's reach, should anything come near. He hopes to throw it at them and distract them long enough to wake his friends.
Should nothing happen during his watch, he wakes Rowanne by nudging her in the side with his foot, instructs her about the ration, then goes to sleep. He removes his armour, but keeps his weapons nearby.
Lady Rowanne of Bridgeford
|
If nothing happens during Vanovar's watch, Rowanne takes over. Not wanting to keep anyone from their sleep, she makes no comment about the rations to Vanovar.
She does not don her armor for the watch, but keeps her bown and sword nearby.
If her watch passes without incident, she wakes Cyrixs and explais to him that the rations should be a last ditch resort, and that if wolves eat them, they will have to be killed as they will asociate humans with food. And how dangerous that is.
After that she goes back to sleep, again keeping her weapons nearby.
| Goat Master |
so 1st watch: vanovar, 2nd watch rowanne, 3rd watch cyrixs, and venja taking watch during breakfast?
vanovar@perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
wolf@stealth: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Taking your watch, about half an hour after everyone starts to drift off, you notice a lone wolf skulking close to the camp, the glint of the moon reflecting in its eyes from nearby bushes. Before you can do much though, it bolts away, sensing that you've noticed it.
vanovar: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
wolf: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Knowning they're out there, you resolve yourself to keep a sharp watch.
doing anything else in reaction to having seen a wolf? or shall i continue?
Vanovar Taleishin
|
Vanovar feels conflicted. He thinks throwing some food to them might appease them, but it might also lure more predators. But, now that he knows for sure that the wolves are around, he feels more uncomfortable.
Maybe it's better to have two people per watch. Vanovar goes to wake Cyrixs, and explains the situation: if Cyrixs joins his watch, and Vanovar joins Cyrixs', and Rowanne and Venja do the same, we all have short naps in between watches. We'll lose some time if we still want 8 hours of rest, but it's better than being surprised by wolves (assuming watches of 4 hours, we need 16 hours of sleep, total, because we're all awake for 8 of those if we follow through with this).
Cyrixs
|
Having been told there's wolves around Cyrics agrees to double up on guard duty and get's up and puts on his armor and picks up his weapon and joins Vanovar, with his back to the fire.
| Goat Master |
cyrixs@perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15
i'd rolled before but decided to pause to see what you'd do. just rolling for cyrixs since he's joining
about half an hour later, you and cyrixs notice the wolves back. cyrixs only sees one of them, the beta, vanovar sees all three of them, skulking towards camp by the underbrush.
vanovar@perception = 28, wolf_alpha@stealth = 25, wolf_beta@stealth = 15, wolf_delta@stealth = 24
vanovar: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
alpha: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

beta: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
delta: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
[r1 (surprise)]: [17: beta], [13: vanovar], [9: delta], [7: alpha], [6: cyrixs]
will get a map up soon. you found a campsite with cover on three sides, the wolves are slinking up close to the cover on two different sides.
| Goat Master |
you're on watch, so i presume you have your weapons out. its a standard action to wake another. at the end of each round i'll give rowanne and venja a perception check to notice the combat and wake up to join the next round.
the beta rushes up to cyrixs in the surprise round.

Man, my rolls are awesome. Let's hope that keeps up.
I also see you editing the map as we speak (...type?). :P
"Rise and shine people, we've got company!"
His plan about the ration completely forgotten by the prospect of a fight, Vanovar hops five-foot steps to Beta and tries to run it through with his longspear.
I'd like to use my domain power:
Destructive Smite (Su): You gain the destructive smite power: the supernatural ability to make a single melee attack with a morale bonus on damage rolls equal to 1/2 your cleric level (minimum 1). You must declare the destructive smite before making the attack. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier.
Attack roll: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 141d8 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Should Delta provoke (maybe not, he has cover) by closing in, I'd like to use the Smite on him as well.

[r1 (surprise)]: [6: cyrixs]
[r2 (regular)]: [17: beta], [13: vanovar], [9: delta], [7: alpha],
Vanovar skewers Beta , heavily injuring it.
Alpha and Delta do indeed come in through the bushes, using the cover to get within your reach and then moving around where you don't threaten them. As they gets into position to flank next round, growling menacingly at Vanovar.
just going to roll perceptions in advance of cyrix's action / end of round. looking for a dc 10 with the penalty for being asleep set against the DC 0.
venja@perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

Sorry, wasn't sure if I could act in the surprise round
Cyrixs swings his weapon at the wolf in front of him (beta)
To hit AC wolf: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
To confirm: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Damage if hit: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2) + 6 = 9
Extra damage if confirmed: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (4, 3) + 6 = 13 (so a total of 22 damage)
| Goat Master |
it goes down with a whine
yup, you spotted the beta, and could attack him. you were just last in init =/ the other two were effectively invisible to you from their stealths at the start of the combat
beta is beyond dead. top of round two, regular round. vanovar is up.

The moon shines his light on you, Venja. The moon, and his filthy dirty face. He smells, the moon, and howls. But there's also a howl from somewhere else, Venja. A deep menacing growl. To your feet, Venja, to your feet!
He shakes up Lady Rowann, then climbs to his feet.
Vanovar Taleishin
|
Vanovar sees Cyrixs dropping Beta, yells "That's the spirit," then drops his longspear, grabs his greatsword, five-foot steps out of the flank, and attacks Delta, with a Destructive Smite.
Attack roll on Delta: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 242d6 + 7 ⇒ (3, 6) + 7 = 16
Whelp, that's a threat.
Confirm threat: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 252d6 + 7 ⇒ (6, 1) + 7 = 14
EDIT: Whelp, that thing's super dead. Confirmed with a 20, even. 30 total.
| Goat Master |
The alpha snarls, raising its hackles, and drags the beta off into the shrubs.
assuming you let it be, the encounter is over
you set your watches, Venja never needing to wake Rowanne, and take turns guarding against a return, moving the carcass to a ditch a little way away, in case the alpha decides to return. Nothing else happens that night, and in the morning, you're ready to head out again.
Vanovar Taleishin
|
It'd be really funny to never let Rowanne in on the fact that we were attacked. When she inquires about the watch, I'd just say "No, you're right, I was just being paranoid."
During the rest of his watch, when he knows the others are asleep, Vanovar says "These people fought well today. They are worthy companions," then mubles a prayer to Gorum, and channels energy over the sleeping bodies.
Channel energy: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Lady Rowanne of Bridgeford
|
haha, exelent idea!
Rowanne tosses and turns a bit, never fully wakening. The sounds of the battle translate in a weird dream where they are all driving a cart trough the forest that is pulled by the wolves.
| Goat Master |
The next morning, you gather your things, nothing else occurs during the night. Early in the day, your trail takes you by the Gray Lake. You take the opportunity to refill your waterskins, and stop for a quick rest. When you do, you notice someone ridding a bedraggled and beat up riding horse. You recognize her from the village, Omorose Mosi, you'd thought she was supposed to join you on your quest, but she never showed up at the appointed hour.
| Goat Master |
behind you, Omorose gallups up on an exhausted horse, likely having ridden all night. Ahead, the trees begin to thin, revealing a field of short, green grass that leads to the shores of a wide, calm lake reflecting the overcast sky above. A dense fog hangs over the center of the lake, obscuring the far side. Near the shore of the lake, a dark form lies next to the water. Mosi's arrival nearly distracting you from the detail as you take in the view.
Omorose Mosi
|
"Hi you guys! Yeah, everything is great, except I was in the understanding that Osprey would get me when the time was ready. That man can be so hard to read. He's always trying to be so mysterious, but I jsut call it how it is: unclear!"
Vanovar Taleishin
|
"Yeah, I don't trust a man with that many secrets. On the battlefield, you need honest men you know you can depend on. If were were fighting on the same side, I'd abandon him until I knew where his true allegiance lies. Don't want to be stabbed in the back by people I trust with my life."
Venja Bela Prestor
|
I wouldn't dare stab you in the back!
Is he talking about you, Venja? Already he doesn't trust you!
I'm glad you found us, Omorose, these roads can be pretty dangerous.
