Exciting adventures in the Dread Sea Dominons, using the Savage Worlds Rule set and Beasts and Barbarians campaign material

Placeholder thread for a Savage Worlds PbP game in the works.

So, right now there's a tie between Beasts and Barbarians and Solomon Kane. I'm partial towards Beasts and Barbarians since there's plenty of really neat adventures there and I haven't yet figured out a good way to start a Solomon Kane game (not really happy about the Path of Kane stuff that's included in the book), but it's a setting I want to try sooner or later?

So, what do you say?

Female / Female Human: Jambala Jaeg Descendent) and Deinonychus Saurian Shaman LVL 4

DOT! First NYAR!

I say go with what keeps the GM happy and excited. Really the only thing I can see as a difference between SK and B&B is the firearms.

Mind you renaming guns "Gisian fire lances" and making an edge modeled on 'poisoner' but granting the bolt power and bang you have your gunslinger.

Female / Female Human: Jambala Jaeg Descendent) and Deinonychus Saurian Shaman LVL 4

lol

So lets just do the Beasts and Barbarian's one! :D

Now what races are involved as I just got the Savage World Deluxe~ Mwahahaha. I spend to much money on rpg's....

Humans only. Plenty of different cultures though.
check this guide

damn~ Saurian looked neat~ But oh well, i'm a scaly fan lol!

I will check that guide out post haste~

Yeah, let's go with Beasts and Barbarians. I'll make a post with setting rules later tonight and hopefully make a thread in the recruitment section to see if any more wants in. I'm aiming for a party of 3-5 players.

Right now I want to include the following setting rules:

* Critical failures (can't spend a bennie to reroll a crit fail, although the victim will get a bennie)
* Jokers are wild (everytime a joker is drawn from the action deck everyone gets a bennie)

As for character creations I'm going to eliminate the following hindrances and edges:

* Enemy - While I think it's great if the character has an enemy I'm not confortable having it as a hinderance. A hinderance is something that should be a factor through out the game, and enemies can be dispatched. I don't want to jump through hoops to ensure that an enemy hindrance stays relevant, no matter what the characters do.
* Poverty (can't remember the name but I think it's poverty or something similar) - I'm not a big fan of starting cash. In character creation you get to pick your starting gear (within reason), so a hindrance that lowers the starting funds is pointless. There is the added thing that you can't hold on to money, but I think that's better handled by a Quirk (Can't handle money) hindrance.
* Rich and Very Rich - Same reasoning as for Poverty. If you want a higher standing then the Noble edge is better suited for that.

More to come later tonight.

Available Powers: analyze foe(N), armor,

arcana/conceal arcana, dispel, environmental
protection, far-sight, fly, invisibility,
legerdemain(N), pummel, quickness, smite,
speed, telekinesis, wall walker, warrior’s gift.

The followers of the Path of Enlightenment
are usually monks from the far
country of Lhoban. Through discipline,
intensive training and meditation, they are
capable of incredible feats. They maintain
that their powers aren’t truly magical and
any man, with the right training and true
devotion to self improvement, can achieve
the same abilities.

But, in truth, many years of training are
necessary to follow the Path of Enlightenment.
That’s why very few of these skilled
individuals exist.

The Path of Enlightenment Powers usually
manifest themselves as personal abilities,
not as true spells. So, all the powers,
except banish, detect arcana, dispel and
pummel have a range of Self.

Backlash: An Enlightened One who rolls
1 on the Enlightment Skill dies, regardless
of the Wild Die, temporarily loses his
spiritual balance. He is Shaken and all his
Enlightenment rolls suffer –2 for an hour.

Started a recruitment thread incase there's more on these forums that want to join. Included the character creation rules as they stand at this moment:

Character creation follows the standard Savage Worlds creation rules with the following exceptions:
* Heroes in the Dread Sea Dominions are more skilled than others. Characters start the game at seasoned rank (20 xp).
* All characters are human. There are different cultures though: Imperial, Tricarnean, Cairn Lord, Valk, Ivory Tribesfolk, Jademen and Northlanders.
* 50 moons in starting cash. This will represent the payment you got from your latest job. In the case of starting equipment just pick what you think your character should have (within reason and encumbrance).

The following hindrances are prohibited:
* All thumbs - As per the setting rules
* Doubting Thomas - As per the setting rules
* Enemy - While I think it's great if the character has an enemy I'm not confortable having it as a hinderance. A hinderance is something that should be a factor through out the game, and enemies can be dispatched. I don't want to jump through hoops to ensure that an enemy hindrance stays relevant, no matter what the characters do.
* Illiterate - As per the setting rules
* Poverty - As you start the game with the equiment you want (within reason), and being loose with your earnings is a setting trope, this isn't a good hindrance. It's better to take the Quirk hindrance with a "Can't hold on to money" trapping.

The following edges are prohibited:
* Adept - As per the setting rules
* MacGyver - As per the setting rules
* Mentalist - As per the setting rules
* Mr. Fix It - As per the setting rules
* Rich and Very rich - Same reasoning as with the poverty hindrance. Better handled through the Noble edge
* Wizard - As per the setting rules

Setting Rules
Blood and guts (able to spend bennies on damage rolls)
Critical Failures (unable to spend a bennie to reroll a critical failure)
Joker’s Wild (everyone gets a bennie whenever a joker is drawn from the action deck)
Multiple languages (know smarts die/2 languages)

Looking good! Just lower your cash to 50 moons and then you have three advances left to spend.

What kind of code of honour does Tenzin follow?

Tenzin's Code

1)The Innocent must be protected.

2)Always offer mercy to a defeated foe

3)Never kill a helpless opponent.

4)Give generously to Charity

I've made the necessary amendments to Tenzin and a couple of tweaks..Everything is in my profile page.

This'll take me a bit to figure out, looks easy but Gurps killed me compared to d20 which I have played for twenty years damn near now HA! I'm old ;-;...

I am pretty good at making characters in SW. And Wellard clearly is as well.
If you want to toss a concept out here I'm sure we could hammer something out together.

And done. Info under alias. Poor Wandering One reporting in.

There is a book of Archetypes for this setting available free on Drivethrurpg.

If you got any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Start with a concept and then take it from there. I'm not against tweeking the character later if you find out that there's something about him/her that didn't work or didn't match your vision.

Thresh Darkon looks down on you all with scorn. "None of you could last a night in the Northlands...lucky for you the mighty Thresh and his Ax 'Bane' are ready to join you. Spill blood, pillage and plunder, get in Bane's way and your head goes off yonder."

Should I kill one of these soft southlanders to demonstrate the might of Thresh?

Mighty Ström, is there a date for starting Thresh's quest?

Male Human Agility D8 Smarts D6 Strength D6 Spirit D8 Vigor D8 Seasoned Militant Monk

I would suggest that we start and Corerue's character can join us when he is ready.

No date at the moment. Right now I'm mainly waiting for Corerue to finish his character. In the meantime you can all give abit of thought to your most recent background. The game will begin in Teyerana, one of the independent cities on the shores of the endless sea. I need you to come up with a short description on how you ended up in the city.

You can find the map of the Dominions here.

Edit:

Tenzin wrote:

If Corerue has a long way to go with his character we can do that. I'm busy tomorrow and on wensday so, the earliest I would be able to start is thursday. If everyone is OK with starting there we start it up then.

I started a game thread with an opening post. You're free to jump in. You can find the thread here. We can have a slow start until Corerue get's his character ready.

Odd my math comes out, well almost comes out.....

Stats:

Agil d4(start)+first stat point for d6 + major hindrance for d8
Smarts d4(start)+second stat point for d6
Spirit d4(start)+third stat point for d6
Strength d4(start)+forth stat point for d6+ 2 minor hindrances for d8
Vigor d4(start)+fifth stat point for d6+ 5ex advance for d8

Looks ok to me......What did I miss?

Skills:

15 points as Gaius is literate and has used all hindrances

2pts Fighting {d6 for 2pts plus 10ex advance for } d8
1pt Lock picking (Since Dubaku has healing I swapped my skill for this one) d4 (1pt)
2pts Shooting {d6 for 2 pts 20ex advance for} d8
1pt Stealth {d4 for 1 pt plus 20ex advance for} d6
1pt Swimming d4
1pt Gambling d4
1pt Knowledge, battle d4
2pt Notice {d6 for 2pts plus 10ex advance for } d8
1pt Repair d4
1pt Survival d4
1pt Taunt d4
1pt Climbing d4

.....Well what do you know....One short... added to notice. Good eyes Boss.

Edges:

Human: Lucky
Setting: Literate, not sure where to record this pseudo edge.
Quick :15 ex advance

half elf, Water child alt race trait Legalistic cursed Oracle of Waves 2

Need a hand Corerue?

It will be odd having 2 beast-masters. Really cool but odd.

If you lose a player, I'd be interested in jumping in.

I'll be keeping an eye on this one!

It does indeed. For some reason I got it into my head that you had the Ambidextrous edge which would have put you at one advance to many. But now that I check the profile (and your char creation break down) you don't have that edge. Don't know why I got it into my head that you had.

Your spot isn't going anywhere. Your place in the cell might, but then your character will show up someplace else. The game will leave the cells eventually. Spoiler!

Looking good. Will be interesting with a under aged character. I'm going to have you start in another place (instead of the cell). I'll post more information when you're ready to jump in. Torillian will be taking your place in the cell.

What kind of animal companion do you want? I wouldn't worry that much about equipment.

Atzi

Skills. Remember the extra smarts skill only point you get for being illiterate.

Ouch! young is a nasty hinderance. You may be overspent on skills I see 13 points spent.

You still have 2 minor hindrances you can take.

And you have your 4 advances to take.

How do you want this tyke to develop? Does not look like a fighter, might do nicely exploiting taunt or looking at command edges to ait the beastie.

You might want to look at this edge. You would need to bump survival but I think you could do it.

savage

Novice, Survival d8+
This hero was either born in the bitter mountains of north, or lived in the Ivory Savannah or in the insidious Lush Jungle. Whatever his origin, he is the typical “noble savage”, perfectly at ease in the nature. He perceives incoming danger by smelling the air, climbs cliffs and tall trees with the agility of a monkey and instinctively recognizes the right herbs to cure wounds and diseases. While in a natural environment (so this Edge doesn’t work in ruins, cities or underground), he has the two following advantages when using the Healing, Notice and Climbing skills. First, if his skill is lower than his controlling attribute, he can roll using the attribute value instead of the skill value (so Agility instead of Climbing and Smarts instead of Healing and Notice).

If the skill is equal or higher than the controlling attribute, he gains +1 to the skill roll.

Second, he never suffers penalties for lack of equipment on these skills.

When I checked it the stats checked out. I was thrown off at first because I didn't remember that Young only gives you 3 attribute points and 10 skill points. Although Corerue has two more minor hindrances to take if he wants to.

Now that we have gotten to a combat (however short:) this is a good time to mention initiative. I'm going to handle it like this:

Each entity (PC, NPC, group of NPCs) gets a card. Everyone gets divided into groups with enemies acting as the divider*. Each member of the acting group takes his/her actions. Actions resolve in posting order, even if the poster drew a lower initiative than another member of his/her initiative group. This way you don't have to include situationals (like if A does this, I'm going to do this) in your posts as the situation is up to date as you post.

* In this case the prison guard acts as the divider. His initiative is at seven of spades, which puts Dubaku, Gaius and Tresh in one group acting before the prison guard, and Tenzin in a group acting after.

Will update the game thread tomorrow.
