Hemlock collects the grisly trophy, wiping his hands afterwards. He's sure to keep the thing away from Nualia, and stores it in a makeshift morgue. Hemlock nods cautiously, and whispers back "Hmm? Well, it's the evening, everyone has retired to their homes. You could ask Sir Jasper to collect the members of the Mercantile League tomorrow, if you like. They don't gather much - but I expect something could be arranged if it was important. There's the new priest - Zantus as well." He peers at the aasimar's face, and takes her out of the garrison. When outside, and has her alone, "is there some reason you wish to speak to everyone? Or are whispering? I do not know you to be deceptive, Hollie. I could pass any message along that you might like." He glances back towards where Nualia is brooding.

"If this is about your sister, I'm not certain what you'd like them to do." He itches his chin, "I was watching her, and if this barghest was killed when you said it was - it didn't affect her." He scratches his head, "but I don't know anything about magic."

Hollie follows Hemlock outside. When the two are alone and he says his peace, she nods and replies, ”You’re right, but I’m not trying to be deceptive or anything. Just,” she lets out a breath, ”I don’t think I have the strength to do this twice...”

She paces a bit as she talks ”I’ve looked at her notes, listened to her talk, and paid attention to things we’ve seen. That barghest, it seemed like it hadn’t left the room it was in for ages. So I don’t think it had anything to do with her. It’s been hard for me to wrap my head around, but there is no other way around it...” she pauses and comes to stand directly in front of him. She locks eyes with him, her own brimming with tears. ”My sister is clearly guilty and unrepentant of her crimes. I rescind any requests for mercy for her on my behalf,” she says as firmly as she can muster, her body beginning to tremble.

"C'mon Kazaht, we gotta haul this bad boy back for a reward. I'll get ya some sweet apples if you'll do it."
Krovek tries to convince Kazaht to haul the barghest's body back.

Kazaht snorts at the offer and walks away.

"Eh, guess it'll have ta be the horses," says Krovek, not that surprised.

He checks in with Hollie. "Say, do you still have some of that healing touch of yours? I gave better than I got, but the bunyip got some fierce bites in."

Hollie turns to Krovek when he approaches. In response she nods and says ”Absolutely. Let’s get a look,” as she steps over. She leans in and delicately places her hands over the injuries. ”Eeeesh, these were bad! Why didn’t you say anything sooner?” she asked.

Her arms began glowing silver and wave after wave of healing energy flowed into Krovek as his various wounds slowly knitted closed under Hollie’s gentle touch.

"Eh, I've had worse," insists Krovek as Hollie looks over his wounds. "Didn't even remember with the fun of fightin' and gettin' treasure!"

Krovek relaxes and lets the warm energies wash over him. He marvels as his wounds are healed and his body restored. "Thanks, you got a special touch, you know. Feels different from druid magic. Druid magic feels like your own body healin' itself really fast. But with your magic, feels like you're bein' taken care of by somethin' out there." He gestures toward the sky as he says this.

He shrugs and starts walking with Kazaht and Cator. "Damn it, f+++ed that one up didn't I?" he mutters in Orcish.

Shaedeen continues to give Hollie space after the triumphant party returns to Sandpoint. The moody teen doesn't feel triumphant. The barghest and bunyip are dead...no thanks to her. Nualia's fate seems set in stone. And Shae feels useless and helpless.

Wen the party returns their mounts to the Goblin Squash Stables, Shaedeen stahys there, taking the time to clean and brush Thunderclap herself. It's very therapeutic, and an hour later she's in a better place emotionally.

I'm lucky to have you, big friend. You could squish me like an ant and yet you don't.

For the first time in what feels like months, Shae's mind turns briefly to Lord Aldern Foxglove, who gifted her the magnificent horse. What did he see in me?

To Hollie:

Hemlock watches Hollie, and nods, "hmmm..." he responds, thinking quietly. "Perhaps it would be best to gather everyone tomorrow, anyway. If you can be neutral in this matter - just present what you've found - let everyone in the Merchant Council and father Zantus... we can vote on it. A secret ballot." He reaches up and squeezes Hollie's shoulder, "lookin' at how she was treated, with her journal and such... " He shakes his head, "if that's okay with you." He pauses and lets go, and then folding his arms, he looks away, "I think... you, admittin' she did us all wrong - I think it cleared my mind. A bit. I'm not so angry."

He looks back at Hollie, "what do you say? Speak plainly? Let her fate be just - more than just revenge?"

Hollie steps forward quickly, clutching the front of his tunic in her hands and burying her face in his chest as she begins crying. ”I...I don’t think I can. It was so hard saying it once...p-please...please just do whatever you have to! I...I...” she stammers as her tears begin to soak his shirt.

Hemlock sighs, "listen, you could have someone else speak for you. Doesn't matter as long as they're honest. I'll recuse myself because I'm of an odd mind on the matter. The five can vote after your chosen representative says what they have to say."

After a moment, it seems as if he's feeling uncomfortable, and he pushes Hollie off of him, "gotta show courage - I think you'd make a better case if you spoke your mind, admit what she did - ask for their judgement without talking about mercy or revenge. Maybe you could save her life - though I'd wager her soul has been forfeit for quite some time." He steps back again, "I can't do what you're asking for, I have enforce the laws - and by all rights it's not my place to go over their head." He opens his hands, "best I can offer is a chance."

He's made it clear that he'll summon the five to one place tomorrow, that they'll vote, and their judgement stands. You can speak, you'll have a better shot convincing them if you do, but you can have a proxy do it if you don't want to.

Hollie composes herself as Hemlock gently pushes her back. She rubs her eyes with the back of her arm and nods. She thinks for a moment before letting out a long breath. ”No...it has...it has to be me. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have broken down like that. This has all just been so much. I’ll do it, but like I said, I’m no longer pleading for her life or for any mercy. The facts are the facts. She has brought this on herself,” Hollie says stoically.

Shaedeen

Shae finds Thunderclap quite happy, munching on vegetable detritus and hay. It neighs and maneuvers its head towards Shae when it sees her, nuzzling her slightly.

Shaedeen - the Next Morning

It's hard for Shae to say, but looks like in all the hubbub of the last few days, one of her hoop earrings has gone missing.

Hollie

Hemlock nods, and lets Hollie prepare herself. He assembles everyone at the Mercantile League, the large building usually serving many purposes. Sir Jasper is at the door when Hollie arrives with or without others in the party, @everyone/Hollie, decide who wants to come! and he ushers her in. Assembled in a large meeting room, around a table, are the four representatives of the noble houses of Sandpoint: Ethram Valdamar, Titus Scarnetti, Ameiko Kaijitsu, and the mayor, Kendra Deverin. Abstalar Zantus appears to be sitting at the table as well, though his seat is obviously brought in from a storeroom. They all meet Hollie's eyes as she enters: most friendly, some less so, though it isn't clear what that bodes for the meeting.

Titus, in particular, frowns, his mustache accentuating the sour look on his face. The other league members all seem more accomodating to various degrees.

Jasper clears his throat, "this is an... unprecedented way of solving a dispute. I know the league barely meets. Hollie Skyborn, a native daughter of our town, wishes to try to explain to the best of her ability, what happened to her sister - Nualia. Under normal circumstances, the overwhelming proof of her misdeeds and unrepentant speech would be enough for Hemlock to find her guilty, and per the laws of Magnimar and by extension, Sandpoint, he is authorized to pass judgement of execution." He inclines his head, then raises it, "in this case, you have all agreed to listen to what she and the others in their party have uncovered - some of which may be surprising. The league has heard bits and pieces of what occurred, but Hemlock thought your wisdom and varying views may be able to find a more just punishment than death."

Hemlock some of his muscles in his face, and grimaces, "we... have all been angry about the late unpleasantness. One of the league members was killed as part of this plot. Please set your emotions aside; Hollie has done so - she only seeks justice."

Titus folds his arms, and Jasper says, "please, Hollie, whenever you wish to start."

“Mithral Champion” Paladin 6| hp 52/52| Init +3, Per +9 (Darkvision 60’) | AC 21, T 13, FF 18 | Fort +11, Ref +9, Will +10 (acid/cold/electricity resist 5)| Rapier +9 (1d6/18-20)

Hollie had spent the hours before the meeting cleaning up her clothes and getting herself a long, proper bath as well. So when the time for the meeting came, her armor shined and she did not look the disheveled mess she did the night prior on her return.

She steps forward before the council and curtsies before beginning. ”Ladies and gentlemen of the Council, I would first like to thank you all for coming, and appreciate you for taking the time out of your busy days to be here. When this entire unfortunate business unfolded and I learned that it was my sister behind the plot, I found it impossible to believe that she would do such things of her own accord, and felt she had to have been controlled in some way. I humbly requested time to gather evidence and try and learn the truth of the matter, which was gratefully allowed.”

She takes a breath and lets it out, steeling herself for what she had to say. ”In the search that followed, we found Nualia’s notes and journals, as well as spoke with her. We searched the ruins where she had made her base thoroughly, looking for any signs that would indicate she was not of her own mind when doing these things,” she paused a moment before adding ”But it is my belief now that this is not the case. Everything I have read, everything she has said seems to point that she performed these plots and actions of her own accord. If there was outside influence on her, I have been unable to find evidence to indicate as such to indicate anything that would lead me to believe she was not responsible. As such, I would like to state to this leading body of Sandpoint that I hereby revoke all requests I have made on behalf of my sister’s fate.”

She steps forward and hands over the journals and other documents they found in regards to Nualia’ s actions and plans. ”Here is the evidence we uncovered, for your review,” she said before she retells it all as factually as she can.

Those in the Merchant League sit stoically. Sir Jasper accepts the documents, and nods to Hollie. Ameiko smiles, but the others have grave expressions. Jasper inclines his head, "they will come to a decision as soon as they can."

Hemlock escorts her outside, to a bench outside of the merchant league, and pats her on the shoulder, "best we can do, I think." He smiles, looking a bit haggard after the whole affair, and returns to answer any questions that might be asked.

*************

After three hours, Hemlock opens the door and invites Hollie back inside.

Sir Jasper clears his throat when they arrive and everyone on the council watches Hollie, their expressions giving little away.

He begins to read from a pad in front of him, "A citizen of Sandpoint had expressed a wish to the Sheriff that the law of Magnimar be suspended so that a known and admitted felonious criminal, another citizen of Sandpoint, be given mercy. The sheriff had no power to grant the request, and nor did the mayor. In the absence of a trial held in Magnimar, according to the laws granted by their government to subsidiary towns, a council was convened of elders of the town - with Ameiko Kaijitsu serving as a proxy for her father - who was murdered by an associate of the accused." He pauses and takes a drink of water.

He continues, looking for where he left off. Some of those around the table shift, uncomfortably. "The evidence of her crimes were presented by the requestor, the sister of the accused, along with a withdrawl of the plea for mercy. As a result of this fact, the Council voted on a secret ballot to determine if the laws may be suspended." He looks down at a lower part of the pad, "the ballot vote was non-unanimous, and after a number of deliberations, a unanimous vote could not be reached. Further deliberations were able to reach a unanimous agreement, however. The murderer known as Nualia will not be killed, but will, if Magnimar is willing, be sent to Hells, Magnimar's sole prison, to be cared for. Sandpoint cannot hold her, and the votes for execution were not sufficient to carry out the sentence. However, due to her heritage, Nualia will be placed in a high-security block at Hells for a period of time no less than fifty years, with an opportunity for parole after forty years - assuming she follows their parole guidelines. This decision is final, and may only be appealed by the magistrates of Magnimar." He looks up, and says "In addition, we believe that you will be asked by Magnimar to pay for her food and care - not a significant amount - though this responsbility includes restitution should she hurt others while imprisoned, or escape."

Titus scowls angrily, the others smile weakly, even Zantus, who looks ashamed of himself slightly, though happy. Ameiko tilts her head, and nods at Hollie.

Titus speaks up, "you forgot the most important part, Jasper, Hollie is to take that... thing, to Magnimar, as soon as possible. She is a ruinous hazard for everyone in this town. The escort will include and other guards." He grins with slightly yellowed teeth, "this is also non-negotiable. If she escapes... don't ever show your face in this town again. Understood?"

“Mithral Champion” Paladin 6| hp 52/52| Init +3, Per +9 (Darkvision 60’) | AC 21, T 13, FF 18 | Fort +11, Ref +9, Will +10 (acid/cold/electricity resist 5)| Rapier +9 (1d6/18-20)

Hollie is shocked by the council’s determination. Why? Why not just execute her? Her crimes of appropriate seriousness and she is obviously guilty?

Hollie steps forward and says ”I beg your pardon, Lords and Ladies, but I humbly ask you to reconsider. After speaking with her previously, I fear this is exactly what she wants, and a sentence for anything other than execution does nothing but play into her hands at this point. With her actions, she has proven herself no sister of mine and nothing but a threat to the people of this town and the surrounding area. However, if this is the will of the council, I will do my best to see her delivered to Magnimar for holding. However, should she escape despite our best efforts to prevent it, I refuse for those of us assigned escort duty to be held accountable as I am formally warning this council in advance of the inherent risks associated with such a transfer. If the council deems the risk of escape too high, I again suggest Nualia’s execution be performed forthwith.”

She had said it before she even realized it. But now that the words were said, Hollie realized that deep down they were the truth, and she stood by them.

Jasper looks confused, and he turns to the others. They also look confused. Hemlock speaks up, "my understanding is that some people took a longer view of the situation. They realized their own culpability in the unpleasantness - and even if that artifact isn't manipulating her further - it did seemingly manipulate her at the time." He points at the notes, "father Zantus pointed that out and made a number of clear arguments, and Ameiko noted she had encountered strange magic like this during adventures. We had assumed that was why you were adamant that she be granted mercy before. Was that not the case, Hollie?"

Titus nods, "yes yes, who cares why she did it! Kill her, and be done with the business! You soft-hearted fools have learned nothing!" he nearly shouts, banging his hand on the table.

Kendra Deverin raises her hand, and the man quiets down, grumbling, and she speaks, "we thought it would be best for you to deal with the escort as you and the crew you're with are the most accomplished at fighting - beyond Shalelu, and she's often quite busy. However, the verdict was reached after extensive, painstaking negotiation between diametrically opposed beliefs. This is the only course we have. Unfortunatly, we cannot change the verdict at this juncture, but if you wish, we can have Hemlock take her Magnimar." She straightens out some notes in front of her, "and she isn't manipulating us - this is ... just what the circumstances require. We had not had everything explained to us before." She coughs, "Hells is secure enough to keep her safe. The town can pay for her room and board while imprisoned if you wish to wash your hands of the matter - she isn't your responsibility any more if you wish to walk away from the situation." She adds this last part in a kind voice.

They look at her for a response.

Meanwhile . . .

In the morning, Krovek wakes up rather groggy from an evening of drinking and feasting. He decides he ought to give Brodert Quink a visit to tell him the news of what they'd found.

Assuming Brodert is around, Krovek launches right into it. He spends a few moments boasting of his great fighting before pulling out a bunch of their findings. He starts with a set of surgical tools. "Look at these beauties, still sharp! Know any folks who'd want somethin' like this?" Hoping to find someone who will buy for more than the listed 50gp.

He then shows off the drawings of Thistletop he made, including one of Runelord Karzoug. And describes the illusion they saw. "So Runelord Karzoug was blabbin' 'bout how he was better than Runelord Alaznist. And we think Alaznist was the one we saw near the runewell. Makes me wonder why that was such a big deal. Was there some beef between them two?"

”If this is the council’s decision I will, of course, do my part as best I can. I appreciate your time and consideration in the matter. I will see who I can gather to join me in escorting her to the city, and would be appreciative of any extra security the town can provide,” she replies with a curtsy as she gives Hemlock a hopeful look.

Earlier:

Lunal does nothing short of sulking the rest of the day. They come back to town and go into their room, slamming the door behind them and not coming out the rest of the night. But early the next morning, in an open clearing within earshot of the tavern, the sound of explosive and dangerous magic can be heard. Lunal could be found there, wearing tight-fighting wraps around their limbs, hair tied back and sweating and panting, as they continuously slammed magical attacks into a series of small boulders that seemed to have been moved into the clearing. The boulders seemed rather indifferent to the assaults, bearing nothing more than some superficial scorch marks.

With some grumbling, and a few kind words, the Mercantile League disbands and heads back to their places of business. Titus nods at Hollie, grudgingly as he passes, and says "you learned some sense after all. Mercy is for the weak. Sorry to say my compatriots are as weak as you used to be."

Ameiko is the last to leave, and she looks sad when she approaches Hollie, "I thought... this was what you wanted. I'm sorry. I don't think everyone should give up on her - I wish Tsuto were still around - I guess I didn't want you to lose her the way I lost him." She hugs the paladin and goes back to the Rusty Dragon.

********************

Brodert nods, and looks at this, "Oh yes! Impeccable! I will gladly buy them for you for, let's say, 100 pieces of gold? They're in marvelous condition. Just marvelous." He fishes out the gold and does the exchange if Krovek wishes. He listens as the big fellow describes Karzoug, "my my, I don't know much about either Karzoug and Alaznist, just in passing I suppose. If you say that some image claimed that they hated each other - that's quite a find. Perhaps I will call a few friends from the university down and guide them there. Assuming it's safe, of course." He gulps, "erm, is it safe, now?"

Hollie doesn’t refute or react to Titus’ boast. The fact he approved of her plea makes her sick at her stomach. She returns the hug with Ameiko, clinging probably a bit longer than is expected.

As she leaves the building, she sighs and looks towards where the explosions could be heard earlier. No alarm was raised, so must not be a danger...but I am Gonna go,check it out.

She makes her way there to find Lunal. She waits for a pause to approach and asks ”Hey...everything okay?”

"Deal," agrees Krovek as he makes the swap. He was glad for both the gold and the opportunity to put the tools in the hands of a collector. "I'd wager it's safe--we took care o' the real scary stuff. Maybe bring a guard or somethin' just in case some critter tries ta make that place its new home." He swaps a few more stories about their recent explorations.

"Still wonderin' where father went, though. Trail's gotten a little cold--didn't get any clues at Thistletop. He saw somethin' here, but what was it?"

For a few moments after Hollie addressed Lunal, they didn't respond, continuing the magical onslaught against the indifferent stones. Then they stopped and took a deep breath, turning to start re-establishing a set distance, from the looks of it. But Lunal sees Hollie looking over expectantly and their face shifts to surprise. Lunal reaches up and takes out an earplug from one ear. "Oh, hey, sorry didn't see you. Hey you probably should back up a little. I know how to direct the elements, but if you get unlucky a stone chip could find its way over there." Lunal unconsciously rubs at their forehead, and a thin line of blood runs into their eyebrow. After a moment Hollie could see over a dozen of the tiny slits, peppering Lunal's exposed skin. It was evident Lunal had not heard Hollie's question. After another moment Lunal's face turned to one of concern. "Oh hey, this morning was the hearing for your sister right?..How did...how are you doing?" They reach up, taking out the other earplug and approaching with a look of cautious concern.

She steps over and runs a gentle hand over Lunal’s inured skin, gauging whether or not they need healing. ”She...is to be transferred for holding in Magnimar. What’s going on with you? Are you alright?” Hollie asks, partly deflecting from her own issues.

Lunal flinches from Hollie's touch, although it didn't seem to be from pain. Suddenly they seem rather self-conscious of their appearance and tightly-wrapped form. "That's...that's good right? You were hoping to spare her life, hopefully find some kind of path forward for her?" Lunal asks tentatively, looking at Hollie for a moment before turning away. They walk over to the more loose-fitting robes on the ground, quickly throwing it on. Lunal's voice takes on a harder edge as the question turns to them. "Just working on some fundamentals. Those creatures we ran into...their magical resiliency made me nearly useless. I considered all kinds of clever tricks to get around that kind of defense, but without going far beyond my scope of power my only real solution is to power through it." Lunal frowns, looking down. "I had never thought that would be one of my problems. The opposite, if anything..." They finish quietly.

Hollie shakes her head. ’After all the evidence I’ve seen, I cannot help but think she is guilty and her execution is justified. But the Council has spoken and so she is to be imprisoned for hopefully the remainder of her life. I do not hold out hope for her seeking redemption,” Hollie says somberly.

She pauses to let Lunal get dressed, then steps over to their side and tries to place a reassuring hand on their shoulder. ”Hey, you did great back there. Better than anything I managed to do.”

Shaedeen kept a low profile throughout the build-up to and the actual trial of Nualia. She'd hoped that maybe Hollie would eventually relent and let her back into her life. Shae was proud of Hollie when it came time for her to speak at the trial. It had to be heartbreaking for her friend to publicly admit the truth about Nualia, yet Hollie had done so: She had chosen the safety of her community over her blood ties to an irredeemable monster.

The verdict stunned Shae. And the more the townsfolk explained their reasoning, the more it angered her. At first blush, it seemed that maybe the people of Sandpoint were admitting (in some small measure) that they, too, had contributed in creating the monster that Nualia had become...until they laid all the consequences at Hollie's feet. You are responsible for transporting Nualia to Magnimar. You are to pay for her upkeep and/or restitutions. And you are responsible should she escape. Somehow, Hollie had morphed from Sandpoint's conscience to its scapegoat.

Shaedeen had hoped that at some point Hollie would let her back into her life...but that still hadn't happened. She wondered if Hollie even remembered that Shae had told her (during one of her previous rants) that she'd been part of a gang in Magnimar and had fled that city for her very life. Shaedeen had intended to never go back there. That was still her intention.

Running to Riddleport and having to deal with pirates, scoundrels, and thieves every hour of every day was looking more and more preferable to the young rogue....

Lunal somberly nods back. Although they didn't have a detailed history as Hollie did, from the brief inspection it seemed clear there were no magical influences to how the woman was acting. "Well...you're up and about and accepting reality. I suppose that's a healthy first step in dealing with an all around crappy situation."

Lunal doesn't retreat from Hollie's touch this time. But they shake their head in disagreement. "If not for how durable Krovek is...he shouldn't have gotten half as hurt as he did. I'm used to him taking a beating for me when we get in danger, but he trusts that I'm able to help him. I barely did anything. I almost think that bunyip stopped acknowledging me and that's the only reason I got a spell through." Their hair rises up slightly from the gathering electricity that had been flying through the air, a suddenly comical movement that Lunal annoyingly tries to smooth down. "Ugh. You have no idea how hard it is to manage your hair as an aeromancer. I've considered chopping it all off."

Hollie’s somber demeanor almost appears to crack at the concern over Lunal’s hair, and her lips curl into a smile. ”You shouldn’t,” she says before running her fingers playfully through Lunal’s hair, ”It looks nice. Adds an air of mystery to you.”

She starts to turn back towards the town. ”You want me to tend to those cuts before I head back? I need to check in with the others and see who would want to accompany me on this prisoner transfer.”

Something about the mystery comment seems to amuse Lunal, who also smiles shyly at the compliment.

At the mention of cuts Lunal looks surprised, then pouty. "Usually the wraps help cover anything that gets hit..." Lunal appears to finally notice the blood in their eyebrow. "Wow...I must have really been going at it...wait did you say we're doing the prison transfer?!" Lunal says wheeling about in shock.

”I wouldn’t call it so much as a prison,” Hollie muses. ”More of a glorified cell that typically is used to hold people that get too drunk at the Feedbag and need to sleep it off. I’m surprised that the key isn’t hanging on a peg within arms reach!”

When Lunal volunteers to join, Hollie smiles a weak but heartfelt smile. ”Thanks. I appreciate it.”

She then turns and heads on back into town proper. As she approaches the Rusty Dragon, she pauses and sighs. Let’s see if Shae has gotten over her...whatever she is at me.

She steps inside and heads up to Shaedeen’s room and starts to knock, but pauses. She lets out a breath as her stomach flits around like she had a dozen butterflies for breakfast and then gently taps on the door a few times.

There's a slight shuffling sound as something stirs inside Shae's room. A moment later, the door opens about six inches, and Shae's face appears in the crack, her green eyes looking up at Hollie with suspicion; there's still an obvious element of anger there as well. The teen tries to peek around Hollie (no doubt to see if the paladin's blanket-thieving, landbound lizard is also present) before opening the door.

"If it isn't the Priestess of Sandpoint," Shae mocks lightly. "Or is it Sandpoint's Punching-Bag these days? It's getting hard to tell...."

Realizing that she's probably moments from driving her friend crying from her room again (and maybe from her life this time), Shae seizes Hollie by the wrist and drags her inside, offering her a seat on the bed.

After a half-huff/half-scream on her part, Shae seems to get much of the lingering anger out of her system...and apparently, it's not directed toward Hollie this time.

"How do you feel about the trial's outcome? Was it what you'd hoped for? And do you intend to do the council's will in regards to Nualia?"

Hollie’s mouth hangs open at the shock of Shae’s immediate mocking of her! But before she can respond, Shae is dragging her inside. She basically trips onto the bed from the unexpected sudden movement.

Hollie steadies herself and takes a proper seat on the edge of the bed as Shae begins interrogating her. ”Well, hello to you, too, by the way,” she begins, her tone chilly. ”If you must know, no, I’m not satisfied with it. Nualia deserves the death penalty. But it isn’t my place to pass judgement here in town. And like it or not, the Council calls the shots. So I have no choice to go along with it. I had come here hoping to see if I could talk you into joining me, facing our fears together,” she says, her tone taking an angry edge of its own as she stands, ”but clearly I was mistaken. You obviously are still mad at me for daring to hold out a faint glimmer of hope that Nualia was not in control of herself and could thus be saved. Well, you will be happy to know...that glimmer has died,” she says, adding an icy emphasis to the last few words.

"I'm not angry at you!" Shaedeen says, a bit surprised by Hollie's aggressiveness. "I'm angry at the people of Sandpoint! I'm proud of you! And I wasn't mad at you for holding out hope for your sister; I was mad that she--the unrepentant prisoner--ordered you out of her cell room so she could plot a possible escape with Cator, and you did her bidding without question! You're better than that! You're smarter than that!"

"There's exactly one person in this town who I'd follow back to Magnimar," Shae continues, "and that's you. But if you're going to let Nualia call the shots, I'll have to reconsider. She should be kept in shackles the whole way--gagged as well--except for meals. If you want to say your goodbyes then--fine. You've done all that you can do for Nualia as a sister. Now all you have left is a duty to your town council. And I'll help you if I can."

”What was I supposed to do after she said that? Refuse to leave until she was executed on principle so that I could claim I didn’t follow her order? And where were they going to go, if he had been? They’d have had to get through both of us and all the town guard!” she responded to Shae’s point about her leaving the cell.

She steps over to the door as Shae speaks her mind about the trip to Magnimar. Hollie is visibly trembling as she stands there with her back to the rogue. Even so, Shae can see that the bare skin of Hollie’s back is flushed from the emotion of their argument.

”All you have left is a duty...”

Hollie hangs her head and without turning asks ”Why are we fighting so much, Shae? I...I don’t get it.”

"I would have said something like 'Mass-murderers planning to destroy town 'cause their feelings got hurt don't get to run the jail,' but that's just me," Shae replies, still deeply frustrated. "Whether you know it or not, your sister and what she's done--and what she'll still do if given half a chance--reflects upon you, both in your own mind and in the eyes of some of the townsfolk. I've heard some people say the town would be a better place without any aasimars in it. They think your piety is an act at best and hypocrisy at worst."

Shae falls silent when Hollie asks her question. "I'm fighting because I want to have a place in your life...at your side. I thought I could change who I was, become an actual Hero of Sandpoint like the townsfolk call us. Now all that seems like wishful dreaming. Drax and Nualia are way more important to you than I'll ever be. And the battles against the barghest and bunyip proved I'm a fraud as a hero, too. I was useless, and I think I know why: Because I no longer really cared. By then we'd lost Bereket and Matty...and I think I realized I'd lost you, too."

Shae falls silent and her shoulders begin to shake. "I knew I should never have kissed you!" she sobs. "I knew you had too much on your plate!"

Hollie looks back over her shoulder, a tear escaping her lower eyelid to streak down her cheek. [b]”I’m going to go check in with the others. I’ll be leaving for Magnimar in the morning, if you want to come with us.”[‘b]

Without another word, she leaves and makes a bee-line for her house. She spends the next thirty minutes or so sobbing in her bedroom before she composed herself enough to go find Krovek and Cator to see if they are going to come with her on the escort run.

Three little words. That's all I asked.

And not even the big three. No, you're wrong would've worked. or I do care.

Instead, she'd gotten: ”I’m going to go check in with the others. I’ll be leaving for Magnimar in the morning, if you want to come with us.”

It's like she wants me out of the Heroes of Sandpoint now, too!

Shae never would have thought it possible before that moment, but the young rogue suddenly sympathized with Nualia. How miserable Nualia's life must've been, always being second fiddle to Sandpoint's Shining Star, Hollie Skyborn and her mithral dragon!

All sorts of dark thoughts entered Shae's mind over the course of the next couple of hours. She wondered if Hollie would find some way to let her twin escape; she was fairly sure that if Nualia managed an escape on her own, Hollie wouldn't try to hunt her down again. And there was an even worse thought.

What if Nualia offers me something to help her escape?

As Hollie was willing to deliver Nualia, Hemlock leads her, manacled and gagged, out of the garrison, after having gathered up seven light horses. He hands the reins over to those who have agreed to escort her, "I've already had the warden at Hells contacted - he knows the situation." He reaches into a saddlebag and retrieves the transfer papers, signed and sealed by the mayor. "As we know, this whole situation was very unusual - but never mind that. It's about a day's ride away if your horses are hale and hearty - which these are. If you wish to take on this task, ride hard, deliver her tonight, and find some good stables for the horses for the evening,"

He fishes out a writ from a pocket with his signature, "this should pay for their boarding - not yours. I've got a matter that just came up which I must attend to - so please decide now if you plan on escorting her. I will stay here if you do. If everyone wishes to stay in Sandpoint, I will escort her instead." He says, a little awkwardly, "your business is your own once she's dropped off but someone has to pay for the horses if you run off with them. Is that understood?" He inclines his head, "or, I'm sure you can purchase them - I don't remember any of you coming into town except on foot." He spreads his hands out, "are there any questions?"

By now, Krovek has heard the news from Lunal and makes sure Cator knows if he doesn't already. He catches up at the prison. "Magnimar, eh? The big city. Guess we all gotta go there once in a while," says Krovek. "Maybe buy some new shiny things there."

He grabs a horse, figuring it's a foregone conclusion that he's going. "Don't be jealous, Kazaht," he says in Orcish. "This way ya don't have ta carry stuff."

Hollie takes Nualia’s lead chain, and hands it over to Krovek. ”Care to keep a hold of her? You are the strongest one of us.”

Hollie nimbly hops up on her horse and looks to Draxtherian. ”Buddy, I’m going to have to let you hang out...wherever you hang out when you aren’t here.”

The dragon looks up at her with obvious protest in his eyes. ”No! I refuse! If this demon tries to escape, I MUST be there to see that she is put down!”

Hollie shakes her head. ”Drax...we gotta make time. And horses are just faster than you are right now. We can’t risk not going as fast as we can.”

He grumbles in protest, but is unable to stop her as Hollie dismisses the dragon. She takes up a position alongside Nualia, keeping her sandwiched between herself and Krovek. She looks over to the others, pausing a moment on Shaedeen, her eyes taking a sad tone, before she looks away towards the road and says ”Let’s go.”

The party gathers themselves up, and loads the cleric of Lamashtu onto a horse. She mumbles things incomprehensibly but acquiesces to being directed where to fuss. When she sees Cator, she grows angry, but can't move much with the manacles on. She's chained to a special saddle - enough that she can't fall off, but also can't claw at the horse either. Her horse is led by Hollie.

The long, brisk and difficult walk of the horses is uneventful, and quiet. Nualia's angry looks dissipate after a while - replaced with looks of boredom or interest, depending on the circumstances.

The party reaches the southern border of Magnimar at dusk on the 1st day of Lamashtan. For those who haven't been to the city, it is an energetic and bustling hub of commerce and eclectic tastes. Those that return bring with them their own histories - books written in blood, sometimes.

The trip to the formidable prison of The Hells is again, uneventful. This prison is located in the lower levels of the Pediment Building, which is itself located atop the wealthy Summit region in the Capital District near the Usher's Hall. The building is large and intimidating, its vast exterior topped with imposing architecture and scowling gargoyles. Its inhabitants are scarcely less intimidating: the stern faced judges of Magnimar's Justice Court.

knowledge (local) DC 20:

Beneath the building is the city's only prison, The Hells. Amongst its claustrophobic corridors, the worst of Magnimar's criminals rot in a place where sunlight never reaches. Few know just how deep down the Hells really goes and there are rumours that the city guard no longer control the lowest levels. These rumours claim that there was some sort of uprising and the guards lost control so they sealed off the lowest levels leaving the worst of the city's criminals to fend for themselves.

Sharp looking guards outside of the building slow the party as they approach, and then ask for all to disarm and explain their purpose. Without delay, the transfer papers are presented, and everyone is lead into what appears to be a lower, "prison" entrance to the building. The entrance is a portcullis raised through no visible power, built of metal that none recognize. A snappily-dressed sergeant with a plume and much of his face obscured is seated at a lectern behind another thick-barred gate. He nods, "it would seem you were able to make it in one day. Thank you for your diligence, Hemlock sent word ahead. Is this the prisoner?" He gestures towards Nualia, who glares at him.
