The group continues to walk deeper into the maze, their unwanted layer of mosquitos draped about them like a living, crawling cloak. The insects are warm against your skin on this chilly fall night.

Then you realize that Leonard is not wearing a mosquito mask, or robes or ANYTHING. He's naked, and in these clouds of insects, nothing’s touching him. Leonard grins. "Knew it was you lot under those robes. You was the only ones not singing!"
Before your eyes, his human gaze drops, his features melting...

Well crud. Unless someone else has any ideas, I'd have to take a diagonal move to get into melee with Leonard which would require a double move since I only have a speed of 20'. I don't suppose Hikaru would be willing to risk an AoO so that Chak could move and attack this round? (If not, I understand.) Just trying to think of a way not to have to spend another round without attacking.
I should have double moved last round and then studied + attacked this round, but you know what they say about hindsight.
Ack. So much corn! So crowded, congested, and packed!

![]() |

Chak, the first diagonal is 5' so you can move right next to Hikaru with your 20' movement.

Dagger, bless, flank: 1d20 + 5 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 5 + 1 + 2 = 9 Miss chance doesn't matter with that roll...
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Sneak Attack damage: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4

![]() |

I wish it worked that way, but it doesn't.
Double Movement Cost: When your movement is hampered in some way, your movement usually costs double. For example, each square of movement through difficult terrain counts as 2 squares, and each diagonal move through such terrain counts as 3 squares (just as two diagonal moves normally do).
If movement cost is doubled twice, then each square counts as 4 squares (or as 6 squares if moving diagonally). If movement cost is doubled three times, then each square counts as 8 squares (12 if diagonal) and so on. This is an exception to the general rule that two doublings are equivalent to a tripling.

GM Hmm |

Hikaru might be willing to risk an AoO, given that he can turn those into Parry and Riposte.

Stali says "Go ahead, Hikaru. I want to get Eits in place, be right back!"

GM Hmm |

Leonard was naked when he leapt at you, but near his hiding place in the corn you see a stash of two potions of Cure Moderate Wounds -- clearly labeled in Alizna's spidery writing. The Sickle that Hikaru is carrying is also really well made, and glows magically.

Sneaking through the corn gives a bonus to Stealth according to the terrain write-up.
You're quite right. That has always seemed so totally and utterly wrong to me (in a home game I assumed it was a misprint and reversed it to a -5 penalty) that I have a mental block on the subject :-(

![]() |

Does someone want to use the sickle?

![]() |

Makes sense to me that the corn field would give a bonus, especially if there is enough wind to cause the corn to sway.
Stali will keep with his normal weapons. I thought Hikaru was going to carry the sickle.
Returning, Stali checks if the group is going along the path or Chak and he are to sneak through the crops while the others take the path.
He whispers to the group "If there is a chance, try to get them talking. Getting them to admit to what is happening should ease the transition."
I'm willing to enter either way. If coming through the corn, I will enter at about the 10 o'clock position taking 10 on stealth, for a 26 including corn bonus. Otherwise I'm at the end of the line.

![]() |

Hikaru has the sickle and he can use it (is proficient, that is), so unless someone else really wants it, might as well keep it for now.

![]() |

It doesn't appear the group has a strong opinion here. I'll have Stali sneak in at 10 o'clock. Its (the clockwork) is coming in at 6 o'clock. The main group sounds like they are coming in through the path which would be 3 o'clock.

GM Hmm |

It sounds like you’re traveling through the corn... I'm assuming everyone took ten on stealth. Stali and Chak, you think that you're well hidden.
The party silently rustles through the overgrown corn fields, emerging into the center. All around them are swaying, drunken cultists, covered in thick layers of crawling mosquitoes. They continue to tonelessly chant, while some of them paw at your robes. They’re not grabbing you... just petting you. You noticed that they are stroking each other as well as they sway drunkenly back and forth.
"Gossamer King, Gossamer King,
Weaving lies in the ring,
Spiders with bite and sting,
Moths and stirges on the wing,
Power come to us through this offr'ing,
Gossamer King, Gossamer King."
In the center, stands Mayor Andretti Kriegler, his mask off, his cultist robes flapping freely around him. He’s standing over a crumpled and sleeping form that appears naked and bound. It appears to be the small and talkative Krissy, the little girl who had adopted Andrietta as an adoptive grandmother.
He casts a spell as you emerge from the corn.
He has a spear casually pointed to the child. “There is violence in your hearts, friends. Sometimes it is needed to spill some blood of course, to renew the crops and to fulfill the cycles of our blessed contract with with the Gossamer King.” He looks down, sadly at the little girl. “I would have chosen another, but... sometimes these things don’t work out. I’m so glad Leonard brought me a substitute, or all would be lost. Are you folks certain you don’t want to join us? We don’t have to be adversaries. We could use resourceful new recruits like you.”
