Night Amara....

Okay...I'm going to one of the worst floors imaginable tonight, F9....it's probably gonna be hell and I'm gonna be super busy so I won't have much time to post anything. Maybe on my lunch break.....if I get one. I can't wait to get the hell outta the float pool.

I dislike some GMs. I really do. I made a character for a Second Darkness game and I had a lot of fun in the process. Just to note, when I make a background I do research with it. Deity (if I choose one), area they come from, class, and details like this. The game I was in didn't even get to character selection. So another GM came in to run the game. Then it ended before the first encounter. I hadn't even made 10 posts on the alias I created for this.

Fast forward to now. One of the players got a GM to run a new game. I applied and made adjustments to account for the PC details. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the GM calls out my story with no info as to their reasoning. Just that they don't like it. I take exception to this. So that everyone may see what I am talking about, I am posting the relevant info here in spoilers. I am not asking help in getting into the game, I just want everyone to see what I refer to.

GM question:

Your character backstory seems a bit disconnected. Why does your character hate bullies? It seems irrelevant and disconnected from the rest of the narrative. In addition, I'm very confused as to how your character is connected to the elves of Golarion. She's grown up outside of Elven society, but has been granted access to information that only elves raised within Elven societies can access. Something isn't connecting here.

My response:

I have some points to make about your questions. To facilitate clarity and accuracy, I will use bullet points.

  • Bullying:
Why does it seem disconnected with the rest of the story? You never indicate why other than that you don't seem to like it. And before you claim that this is a random personality bit I threw in, please read the following: "Because she was weaker than the other children, she was bullied frequently. She tried to deflect their taunts and jabs as best she could, though she was not always successful. The experiences were valuable, though, because out of them she developed patience and a steely inner strength." Sounds like a valid reason to hate bullies. Unless you feel that childhood events shouldn't influence her as an adult.

  • Elven Society:
What story point brought you to the conclusion that she was raised outside of elven society? I'll tell you this much, no such point exists because I never made it, either explicitly or implicitly. She lives in the city with other elves. Being that Absalom is a diverse city she would have been exposed to children of other races. There are many large groups of elves that live in an urban environment, and this is no exception. Please, kindly provide your reasoning as to why you have this concern.

  • Elven Knowledge:
As to her knowledge, I direct you to something: "She was given access to any material she desired (not that she really studied with a gift such as hers), from those pertaining to her race, to literature pertaining to the religious." Sound familiar? It should as this is in her story. Divine knowledge is a real concept in the game. I accounted for this in the mechanics by making her an Oracle. I also draw your attention to a sentence in the opening paragraph that describes the Oracle class: "These divine vessels are granted power without their choice, selected by providence to wield powers that even they do not fully understand."

If you are going to provide feedback then you need to tell potential players your reasoning so we can see your point of view. Not doing so means that it looks like you merely don't like something rather than having a legitimate concern. Save time and post ALL relevant info so the best decisions can be made from the beginning.

You seemed to glossed over the story on several points. This led you to jump to some conclusions regarding such. For the sake of all players, don't. Instead of assuming something you should always ask first. Less stress overall.

I very much dislike being told that something is amiss without the why. In this case, it means I don't want to make the changes unless I have a valid and rational reason to do so. Don't like it? Not everyone does. Should I change it based just on an opinion? Not always. It depends on how it is explained to me.

Thoughts?

And in the end the GM stated that I can still use the story I wanted in the first place. Why then was there an issue? If it is something that is easily overcome in regards to tying my story in, why object to it at all? I refuted the concerns with logic and reasoning and showed why my concerns were valid and theirs were not. Not sure if I have an interest in that game anymore. I really do like the character, though and still have a desire to play her. Ah well. Maybe some other time.

The dangers of PbP is that it's a crap shoot. Neither side knows what they're going to get. As much as I want to play, I end up on this side of the GM screen most often.

Yeah. I haven't ran any game before, either PbP or a live game. I have been tossing around with getting a module and test playing it. My idea is to accept players on a testing basis. Meaning that their backstory won't matter as much when compared to the system itself. I have not gotten that far yet, but I may do something soon. We'll see.

Like I said when I began, my criteria for accepting players has changed since I started. Party balance be damned as long as people have fun. Creativity and luck outweigh the need for the tank/healer/damage/skills setup.

True that. I peruse the recruitment forum regularly and find games that get posted, and it seems that someone somewhere makes a character, doesn't ask any questions, and posts it. Their line usually goes like "submitting "name" for your consideration." They usually include a blurb that is too short about their character and that's it. I laugh at those posts.

That's usually why I ask for a backstory.

I've had players that started it out as more than that, then devolved into that.

I'm glad you enjoyed that. One-sided characters are so much fun to watch. Well, the players at any rate. Especially when they self-destruct when someone calls them out on their folly. It does serve as a stark Tony Stark? contrast to the quality submissions.

That it is. Fortunately I am the I.T guy so I do not have to deal directly with patients. Actually, it is preferred that we do not. There really is no need for me to interact with them on any level. The staff is who I deal with. That and doctors. Doctors can and often do get pissy.

Doctor: I want this fixed NOW!

Me: Did you put in a ticket?

Doctor: I don't have time for that. Besides, that is what you are for!

Me: That doesn't negate the need for a ticket. How do you expect me to know what needs fixing if you won't tell me by opening a ticket?

Doctor: Not my problem. Fix it!

Me: Ticket please!

I then end the conversation and walk away. I cannot fix what I don't know about, and I will not fix anything without a ticket. Thems the rules.

It doesn't always happen exactly like this but it is pretty close. They want something done and expect me to magically know what is wrong via my supposed tech superpowers. Okaaaay. I didn't know I had powers? More for me I suppose.

Yeah...he knew he messed up. He even shook my hand.....Felicia was PISSED. There are some floors, where the nurses know me so well that they don't like other people messing with me either. The fact that the doctor was screaming at me, just set her off. She told him, don't you EVER call up here yelling at one of our techs again....especially THAT one. She has NOTHING to do with how quickly your patient gets up here, and they only called it in to us 20 minutes ago.....yeah...there was that and alot more that she said, but I only heard the parts that she was yelling. Hehehehe

If I have three levels in Bimbo can I still take levels in Investigator even though the Sigh for help in case impressionable male fall under my spell and lifts my luggage off the carousel ability specifically precludes any Insight abilities?

@GM: It came from a tale my friend told me of being at the airport in Brazil. A very dolled up but small woman tried "the sigh" but it didn't work. So she tried it again with more gusto and a big burly man swept in and came to her aid. ;)

Greater Sigh At 5th level, and every even level after that the bimbo may use the sigh one extra time per day.

Why do people always gotta be trying to claim others like they are territory or something? I don't need a perimeter or anything else set up around me because I am more than capable of setting my own boundaries. I'm also more than willing to beat the holy crap outta anyone who tries to breach said boundaries.

Then why do it? Why claim us like you would some kind of territory, or like we're helpless damsels? Especially if you know it's just gonna piss us off? I've never understood that part of being in a relationship....although I would break any woman's arm who dared to even lay a finger on my Henry....so, I guess in a way I can get it. Our species is prone to fits of jealousy and wot not. It makes it hard on us sometimes though when our significant other is completely unaware of when they are being hit on.
