Went to texas once. The trip started with my mom slamming the door on my leg. Spent the whole drive with a dog on my lap. Was promised 6-flags. Lies. Stayed inside and watched Tv the entire time.

We never got to go to any amusement parks on these trips....they would stop at the strangest places...then we would eat in parks and stuff. Dad fed some squirrels parts of his Suzi Q, even after a sign said not to do it and then got covered by a swarm of squirrels.....we would always go to historical sights, museums, and if there was like a national park or something it was almost guaranteed that we would stop there. My summers usually consisted of being stuck in a vehicle 75-80% of the time while my dad drove all over creation.

Well Des Moines isn't too big so we still keep a lot of trees and other grennery inside the city limits.

But strange experiences are so much fun, unless its strange experiences with hobos I've had those, those aren't fun.

Hobos...the insane...dead people...old Filipino men trying to get me in their car (it happened more than once!)...crossdressers offering me "rides"...Yeah, I don't need those.

No matter where you live, every place has it's drawbacks, issues and good things as well. It's just a matter of figuring out what you're willing to put up with and where you feel most at home.
