Brother Cyrus
"Frederick, please. Those trolls are part of a darker plot in these lands. They could be connected to some criminals Eitylen and I encountered in the city. They were using some kind of potion to transform into half man half monster abominations. They too had black veins and yellow eyes." Cyrus says pleadingly.
Frederick Forsythe
Uggghhhh but every combat is more time we spend on this Ayren mission. =(
Frederick sighs.
"Do you really expect to learn anything about that from these creatures? Anything you didn't already know? Should we not complete the mission we're actually on currently without taking any more needless detours? This has already stretched out much longer than it should have taken, or what we originally agreed to do. Were a man's life not at stake I would already have left to find a less deceitful employer."
GM Lemmy
Hey, it's no longer an Ayren's mission. His current mission is to stay put under a tree. XD.
In any case, I'm rolling Initiative if you decide to attack...
Brother Cyrus: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Eitylen: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Frederick: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Jaazkara: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Troll 1: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Troll 2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Frederick
Troll 1
Brother Cyrus
Eitylen
Jaazkara
Troll 2
BTW, since Nicos completely vanished from every PbP game, you can control his character for the time being. No point in waiting 24h.
Jaazkara dives into the water, attracting the attention of one of the trolls... It doesn't move yet, though. Apparently unsure of how to proceed, the creature decides to stick with eating. That has to be more pleasant than chasing humanoids around, after all.
The Will-o-Wisps show no interest in you. And stay close to the dying monsters.
Meanwhile, underwater... The lizardfolk warrior swims with surprising ease, due to her strength, training and natural aptitude. Still, Jaazkara is all but completely blinded by the mud, vegetation and debris... Occasionally, she feels something colliding with her, small animals and objects most likely, some of which have a very smooth and metallic feel.
Jaazkara notices the water isn't very deep in the area where the trolls are feasting, only about 6 ft separate the water surface from the floor. The monsters are standing in shallow waters.
You can move up to 90ft swimming, right? So you can emerge anywhere you want within that radius.
And I just noticed I never invited you to the Roll20 campaign. Is there a e-mail where I can send the invitation? You can PM me if you prefer... I think there is a way for me to send a link for you, but I don't remember how. :P
Jaazkara
Jaazkara jets through the black waters blindly, propelled by wide flicks from her powerful tail. She briefly wonders what could feel smooth and metal here in the water with her, but then quickly stops that line of thought when she gets to, "...here in the waters with me." She surges faster through the brackish waters, optimistically telling herself that it may have been ironfin, and after coming up once to correct her course, she skirts the edges of the shallower area before moving into it. She stands and draws her polearm, sizing up the foes before her.
"I would devour a meal of fresh fish right now; oh well. First the trolls," she thinks as she takes the opportunity to take a closer look at the apparently-diseased trolls.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Can I discern anything more about whatever is afflicting them?
Frederick Forsythe
Just noticed I'm the one up first, my bad.
Frederick swims closer, much less quickly and gracefully than Jaazkara.
Swim: 1d20 + 13 - 5 ⇒ (8) + 13 - 5 = 16
Swim: 1d20 + 13 - 5 ⇒ (18) + 13 - 5 = 26
So I can make it 40 feet in with a double move.
Edit: NVM. 20 feet. I thought you could accelerate Swimming like you can Climbing, but it doesn't look like it.
GM Lemmy
Placed Jaazkara's token in Roll20 under control of Septid. So feel free to position her wherever you want.
As Frederick jumps into the bog water, the taste of mud and rust fills his mouth, and the trolls raise their heads from their meals for the very first time. One of them clumsily grabs an oversized machete by its side, but doesn't move.
As he moves, the half-orc sensate feels the same light collisions with his body as Jaazkara did. He too gets the impression they are probably small animals and objects... Including a few metallic ones.
BTW, by moving 20 ft, you already get to the "shallow" water. It's still pretty deep (about 6 ft deep) but you don't have to worry about drowning. You can walk underwater and for simplicity's sake, breathe without problem (can be done easily by simply hopping). Still... Unless you grow 1 size category, you're still fighting underwater. The good news is... You get concealment, since most of your body is covered by dark, muddy water.
GM Lemmy
Ok, let's speed up this thing!
You're now in combat and initiative is running and the 24/48h rules is now active! Jaazkara gets a surprise round since they completely lost her from sight. It'd probably be more fitting to just make them flat-footed, but whatever. That's a free round for you, so enjoy. ;). You can freely control Eitylen 'til Nicos comes back. No need to wait for his 24h to pass. If two or more players describe different actions for Eitylen, you have 1h to decide which one you prefer, if you don't, I'll use whichever was posted first. With some luck and a little effort we can get this combat done before the day is over!
Ready... Set... Go!
Round 1
Jaazkara Surprise Round.
Jaazkara
Jaazkara uses the troll's distraction and lack of awareness to her advantage, swinging her fauchard in a wide overhead arc down on the head of the troll as her vision clouds momentarily in a red haze. She feels her inner fury fill her as she strikes!
I give myself over to the rage within, and attack
Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21Damage: 1d10 + 17 ⇒ (7) + 17 = 24
GM Lemmy
The black water slows Jaazkara strike, but she still finds her target, and takes the closest Troll by surprise. The creature roars in pain as blood and black pus mix with the bog's water.
A few feet to Jaazkara's left, her new half-orc ally is ready to act!
Round: 1
Frederick's turn.
So... You're about 5~6 ft deep into muddy water. That means you're fighting underwater unless you're Large-sized or bigger. OTOH, you have a weird version of full concealment. The enemy knows where you are and is not flat-footed, but still suffers a 50% miss chance when attacking you. Additionally, you can use a move action to jump up and get your upper torso out of water for a moment and strike without suffering the drawbacks of underwater combat. That momentarily removes your water-based concealment as well, of course, so don't provoke AoO while doing it.
I'm kinda improvising here, so while you should always feel free to share criticism/suggestions about a ruling, this time you can feel EXTRA FREE... XD
Frederick Forrsythe
Frederick hops out of the water, trailing weeds like some kind of be-wigged frog, and slashes at a troll.
Slash: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
GM Lemmy
Ah... Good ol' Rynjin Sundokan rolls... 2016 seems like a promising year already... XD
You still needed to move a few ft before reaching the troll, but let's just say Frederick leaped forward.
Frederick's leap startles the Troll, who reflectively raises its machete and blocks the strike.
The other troll lunge forward and strikes Jaazkara with a large cleaver, rusty from its contact with the bog water...
cleave'er: 1d20 ⇒ 18
concealment: 1d20 ⇒ 1 [ooc]Lucky lizard...
...But though its strike is fierce, the monster can't quite discern Jaazkara's positioning. The lizardfolk warrior cleverly uses the mud and floating debris to her advantage, and with a quick dive, almost completely disappear from sight a fraction of a second before the troll's weapon splashes mud and water around.
Round 1
Brother Cyrus' turn, then Eitylen's.
Brother Cyrus
"Ohhh great heavens, watch over us because this swamp is disgusting and I would really not like to fall in." He grumbles as he pushes the raft closer.
When he spots the Lizardfolk burst from the water, he begins to murmur prayers.
"Divines, let this be over swiftly! May my companions blades strike true!"
Dunno what action it is to oar a little but I start Inspiring Courage. Everyone gets +2/+2 to attacks/damage
GM Lemmy
Eitylen decides it's best to attack from afar, so he just takes a couple steps forward to shorten the distance between him and the closest troll, then throws a flame-spilling flask at the creature...
Bomb: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10 damage: 3d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 5, 2) + 4 = 12
...But the flask falls short. Though it still splashes a bit of incendiary liquid on the target.
Well... You were the ones who said I should control him...
Round 1
Jaazkara's turn.
Jaazkara
Jaazkara flicks her serpentine tail to propel her body downward, her feet sinking into the thick mud. She waits the span of 5 heartbeats, then kicks off the bottom with all her might. She breaches the murky surface of the dark waters and slashes her polearm out at the troll before her as she reaches apex, then slinks back into the oily waters once more.
Attack: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28 Damage: 1d10 + 19 ⇒ (4) + 19 = 23
I jump out of the water to attack again. And I know it may be insignificant, but I have Witchhunter(+2 dmg vs magic) if it applies to these degenerates.
GM Lemmy
Jaazkara's weapon once again finds its target, splashing more blood and black pus on the water. However, Jaazkara feels more resistance than she expected (i.e.: they have DR)
Perception check!
The other monster stumbles forward and strikes Frederick with his club...
Club: 1d20 ⇒ 7
...But the half-orc is faster and skillfully deflects the attack.
Round 2
Frederick's turn.
Brother Cyrus
How far can I push the raft in a turn?
GM Lemmy
Don't ask dumb questions, Scavion... Obviously, I have no idea. :P.
Uh... Somewhat based on Swim checks, Let's say it's a DC 10 Str check to push it 10 ft... +5 ft for every +10 above the DC. That means 4 people could take 10 and move it at 40 ft per turn. Seems about right. (I know technically, you can't take 10 on ability checks. Ignore that rule. I don't think there is any problem with treating them as skill checks).
Brother Cyrus
Strength: 1d20 ⇒ 11
After rowing slightly closer, Cyrus invokes divine power and his allies are blessed by the heavens.
Move action push raft, standard cast Bless? Add another +1 to Attack Rolls for a grand total of +3/+2
GM Lemmy
It should probably be a standard action to row, but I'll let it slide this time. The raft is now 20 ft away from the area of shallow waters.
Uh... I'm not sure what to do with Eitylen. So let's say he leaps as far as he can in an attempt to get into flanking position against the troll facing Jaazkara.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28
Eitylen leaps forward, landing on one of the fallen trolls. He moves quickly over the creature, and ends up flanking the monster threatening his new lizardfolk friend.
Speaking of which...
Round 2
Jaazkara's turn.
Jaazkara
Jaazkara leaps up out of the water to strike once more, swinging her long weapon at the troll's chest.
Attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (8) + 16 = 24
Damage: 1d10 + 19 ⇒ (8) + 19 = 27
GM Lemmy
Jaazkra strikes the troll once again. The beast roars in angers and attacks her...
Cleaver: 1d20 ⇒ 14 damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
1d100 ⇒ 98
This time, the water doesn't protect Jaazkara, and she feels the heavy blade slashing through scales and muscle.
The sight of blood seems to entice the creature, and the monster lunges forward, jaws first.
Bite: 1d20 ⇒ 4
...But its eagerness doesn't pay off.
14 damage to Jaazkara
Round 3
Frederick's turn.
Brother Cyrus
OAR THIS RAFT: 1d20 ⇒ 9
Frack.
"Eitylen help Frederick! The Lizardfolk is capable enough itself!" Cyrus offers words of tactical insight.
GM Lemmy
Sorry for the delay.
Eitylen draws his dagger...
dagger: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32 damage: 1d4 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 Sneak Attack: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 5) = 12
He quickly steps forward and makes a grievous slash across the monster's throat before it even realizes the elf's hand moving. Red and black blood pour from the creatures neck as it falls to its knees and then on its belly... Slowly sinking into the bog's muddy waters...
Round 3
Jaazkara's turn.
Jaazkara
Jaazkara dives into the murk to move closer to the remaining troll, then slashes her fauchard through the stagnant waters, feeling the resistance slow her swing.
Attack: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16
Damage: 1d10 + 17 ⇒ (1) + 17 = 18
Underwater combat penaties included, as I had to spend my move swimming over to the troll. Also, I flank with Frederick.
Frederick Forrsythe
Frederick keeps hopping, beginning to feel like an idiot.
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
1d8 + 15 ⇒ (3) + 15 = 18
"Well, at least it works half the time."
GM Lemmy
The troll roars in pain as Frederick's falcata digs into its torso... But the creature still stands. It grabs its club with both of its oversized hands and attacks the orc!
Club: 1d20 ⇒ 9 damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Concealment (Water): 1d100 ⇒ 96
Frederick almost deflects the attack, but this time, the weapon's force is too much to resist... The creature's eyes grow red after the impact, and it tries to bite into Frederick's shoulder.
Bite: 1d20 ⇒ 7
But Frederick manages to evade the monster's yellow teeth... He can evade the smell of putrid flesh coming from the troll's mouth, though.
13 damage to Frederick.
Round 4
Brother Cyrus' turn.
Brother Cyrus
Row row row your boat: 1d10 ⇒ 3
Aid Another!: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Brother Cyrus has difficulty implementing proper rowing technique.
GM Lemmy
Hmmm... Brother Cyrus could benefit from some sort of at-will offensive power. This way he could help even when he doesn't want to spend spells or channel energy.
BTW, when someone takes too long to reply, you don't have to vote. Just post what you want them to do... Unless it's something really freaking insane or dangerous, most of the time, it isn't a big deal.
Anyway...
Eitylen moves forward and attacks the remaining troll...
dagger: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21 damage: 1d4 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
...The water slows down his attack, but he still manages to deal some damage.
Round 4
Jaazkara's turn.
Jaazkara
Jaazkara jumps out of the sludge to swing at the troll, bringing her long-hafted weapon to bear on the creature yet again.
Attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (4) + 16 = 20
Damage: 1d10 + 19 ⇒ (3) + 19 = 22
I resume jumping for my attacks
Frederick Forrsythe
Frederick does the same, except with a sword because he has no long-hafted weapon.
Slash: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27
Damage?: 1d8 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20
Jaazkara
Jaazkara nods at the half-orc's words, then takes a moment to investigate the metallic objects in the water, moving her clawed hands through the water slowly to try and catch one.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Or
Knowledge-Nature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
GM Lemmy
Jaazkara fiddles in the water for a while, trying to get hold of one of the metallic objects she noticed before...
She touches a few objects of similar smooth texture, some of them slip right past her hands, while others simply float around... Eventually, she manages to grab one that was stuck to wooden branches and algae.
When she pulls it out of the water, the object is revealed to be nothing more than a small cog, no bigger than a common ring... Jaazkara can't tell much about the cog itself, but she notices it's in very good condition and shows no visible fractures or signs of rust, despite being immersed in swamp water for gods know how long and showing no traces of magic of any kind.
Does anyone have ranks in Kn(Engineering)?
Brother Cyrus
Hmmm... Brother Cyrus could benefit from some sort of at-will offensive power. This way he could help even when he doesn't want to spend spells or channel energy.
I'll see if I can come up with something if you let me fiddle with a rebuild after this adventure. I've been thinking much the same and am coming to a "Final draft" for Cyrus.
"That water looks gross. Hurry up and get in the raft before you catch something."
